    What I really love about SM74 is the focus on skills rather than gfx. Yes, it looks simple compared to new hacks, but I find that a most of the newer hacks have far too large levels where you just end up running around aimlessly forever trying to find stuff. This is not fun in my view. In SM74, the levels are small, but the tasks are challenging, fun and engaging. It's about mastering the skill required for whatever trick/move necessary to reach something and this turns you into a better player and it is this act of mastering the game mechanics that is so satisfying. Not running forever in empty spaces looking for stuff. The sphere levels in particular, however difficult, I found very enjoyable to master. Other favorites of mine were haunted factory, flowery gardens and cliff of wrath.
    This is also why, after all these years, SM74 remains my favorite hack and I find myself return to it time and time again. You have an incredible talent for game design in my opinion and I hope you will make a new game one day.
    My only complaints about this game is the camera which can be quite bad at times. And also the game before fixed warps was insufferable.
    I will also admit that when I first played SM74 I didn't like it that much, I was too inexperienced to fully enjoy it. It's a bit like how I feel about SM74EE now. Just a little too hard to be fun. But with experience I've grown to love SM74.
    Thank you for making this hack, it has given me a lot of joy over the years. It was interesting to learn about your thought process during creation of this game.

      Thank you for the kind words. :)
      I agree that large levels tend to feel empty and consist of a lot of boring running (I think I said that during the Dice Fortress section). While I wouldn't really call the game design in SM74 "great" (there's at least one larger flaw in every level), I guess it's good enough to be enjoyable. As for the camera / warps: Yeah, those sucked, but I didn't have the ability to change it. Good thing that others patched it.

    Really interesting stuff. Super Mario 74 and Super Mario Star Road lifted me out of my depression during that period and were what inspired me to pursue level design. For years I experimented with hacking SM64 before eventually branching out to modding A Hat in Time. Shortly afterward, by some miracle, the developers of that game officially accepted a level I had made for a contest, winning 3rd place. So yeah; I wouldn't be anywhere without those early ROM hacks.

    Watching this video was an absolute blast, thank you so much for making this! I hold SM74 very close to my heart even to this day as it was the first hack I've ever played and the reason I got myself PJ64 in the first place. I do a 100% run of this game pretty much every year and watching this made me want to start my 2020 run.
    While I understand your criticism for the first few levels I really wouldn't call them too hard as the missions were very skill-building and prepared you well for what is to come later down the route. I would say that this hack is what built my SM64 skills the most with the extreme edition reinforcing them further.
    SM74 is gonna stay my favorite SM64 for it's focus on gameplay over visuals and for me personally the difficulty is set just right (with a few minor hiccups like the 100 coins in course 11).
    If you can find the time to make a similar video for the extreme edition I will definitely watch it. I know this sounds a bit cheesy but I always get happy when I see you uploaded a new video despite your time being fairly limited these days. I hope everything is going smoothly in your life! c:

      You remember Kaze and his first ever rom hacks? he had pretty poorly made rom hacks for his first goes at rom hacking but I think from observing his insane rom hacks these days, that he may have been doing experimental stuff with rom hacking stuff, so he may have not made bad rom hacks to begin with, he was probably testing rooming some of his creations, cause this guy know how to freaking rescript the games binary hex values

      Hey Lugmillord! Been playing hacks for around a year and my first ever one was 74 and it still remains one of my favorites to this day (I also like EE but not as much lol). I think my personal favorite levels in both games were the spheres and they were pulled off so thematically well that I was astounded when I found out that this game was the first ever "major" hack. If I had to pick a least favorite, I'd choose EE c5, which is so bad that it trumps all mediocre stages in 74 so much that I couldn't even choose a bad 74 level compared to drowned factory LUL. Nonetheless, thank a lot for making this hack and this video, it still holds up so well today, and kudos for being a huge part of hack history.

    I thought it was amusing when you called some stuff in the earlier levels “too hard” because SM74 was the first hack I ever played and I don’t remember struggling that much on the earlier levels. I stopped playing it when I really started to struggle to make progress at the end of the third overworld. It made me feel a bit better when you mentioned two stars that I got stuck on: Sunny Beach 100 coins and that one final level star where you have to fit through small gap in the lava, but I also got stuck on Ombru Sphere star 5 (you said Luminium Sphere star 5 was one of the hardest so you might have been saying the same for Ombru star 5 but idk). I might get back into the hack and try to finish it soon. In my opinion, SM74 is a nice middle ground (or even a bridge) in between casual and extreme hacks and that’s why I like it. Also yes please make a part 2 for SM74EE although you can probably make it a bit shorter since most levels only have minor differences.

    • @Lugmillord
      @Lugmillord  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This video is really nice, Its great to see your own comments on these levels. I might add, as someone that’s playing through 74 and 74EE in 2020 for the first time, they really both hold up super well, and i’m having a blast with both! ive seen this sentiment across other comments as well and yeah, i really prefer 74 to star road, i feel like the way you designed the levels is so much more enjoyable to just play through. and about 74EE, as my first kaizo hack, it really has a nice difficulty curve with the beginning stages being challenging, but still very enjoyable to play through, and the later ones giving a real challenge that feels AMAZING to overcome after so long. The only stage where I wasn’t having fun for a bit was melting icecrystal, but aside that EE is fantastic as well. anyway, this marks the end of this very rambly comment where i went off on multiple tangents, but thanks anyway, you made some great hacks ESPECIALLY for the standards of 9 years ago.

    überraschendes Video. Ich spiele zufällig gerade wieder SM74 und was soll ich sagen, nach all den Jahren immer noch der beste SM64 Hack den es imo je gegeben hat ^^ der Schwierigkeitsgrad ist einfach genial, (Als ich es zum ersten Mal durchgespielt hab, hatte ich gar keine SM64 Erfahrung abgesehen vom normalen Spiel und trotzdem hat mich das Spiel motiviert jeden einzelnen Stern zu probieren und zu probieren bis es irgendwann mal funktioniert hat. Hab bis heute keinen einzigen Savestate jemals irgendwo gesetzt :) Und die letzten Welten zu beenden hat sich jedes Mal wie so ein großes Erfolgserlebnis angefühlt.) das Leveldesign ist genial (Luminium Sphere immer noch mein Alltime favourite, das Level schafft so eine gute Atmosphäre), und nicht zuletzt ist das Gameplay einfach perfekt auf Marios Movement angepasst ist und dadurch fühlt sich das Durchspielen auch beim 10. Mal einfach angenehm an. (Ich weiß nicht ob es vllt auch an den limitierten Möglichkeiten von damals liegt, aber was ich am meisten im Vergleich zu anderen Hacks schätze, ist, dass es sich primär so anfühlt als wären die Level um Mario herum gebaut worden und nicht Mario in vorgefertige Level hineingesetzt worden, die beengend sind und Marios Fähigkeiten eher einschränken als fördern, wie es leider bei vielen anderen Hacks der Fall ist, am krassesten bei Last Impact.)
    Also zusammengefasst: Beim ersten Mal durchspielen mega gute, motivierende, atmosphäre Herausforderung, beim 10. Mal durchspielen einfach entspannende Möglichkeit um abzuschalten und sich nebenbei Podcasts oder Dokus anzuschauen :) An der Stelle einfach von mir großes großes Lob für deine Arbeit und großes Danke für die nicen Stunden mit dem Game :)

    When I saw your latest hack name I suspected that it's from you, but when I saw its truly from you I was positively surprised. Sm74 was the first n64 game which I played on emulator. Idk how I found it, but it's just so nostalgic for me. It's dated, but with the better camera and warp fixes it's still enjoyable to this day, but that also might be due to nostalgic reasons.
    Thanks again for creating the hacks and for your lets plays. You was one of the lets players who I watched the most around 2012.
    Also I was impressed back then how good you was at sm64. Motivated me playing it more and was one of my introductions to speedrunning. So yeah many nostalgic things which had some connections with you.

  • @Lewis---
    @Lewis--- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for sharing this, it was really interesting to hear your own thoughts about the levels. I got nostalgic considering I played this game about 7 years ago. A few of the design quirks you criticise I found to be pretty charming. The flat ground sections aren't the most imaginative but I like the "homebrew" feel of it all, and knowing a single fan made it rather than a professional team. I think the difficulty of the hack for the most part was really good, with the only exceptions being the sphere courses at the end which essentially felt more like extreme edition levels of difficulty. Speaking of the sphere courses, I always thought their concept was so cool. That's probably what kept me motivated to beat them 🙂. I think the only thing I felt was frustrating was the insane hiding place of the 151st star. I'm pretty sure I had to look up how to find as a last resort.

    Cool video! It’s great to see all that behind the scenes stuff about this hack.
    SM74 was the hack that taught me most of my SM64 skills I have now. When I first played it in December 2011, I found it very hard and it took me more than 3 months to complete it, even with using safestates in my first playthrough for the 100 coins in C11 and in C13-15 and B3 (I lost the ambition to complete it „savestatesless“ on star 6 in C13) .
    But I really enjoyed the hack and it still remains one of my fave hacks of all times. Even though the levels might seem a bit flat and empty, I really liked your ideas of platforming (especially C5, C12 and C14-15) and the challenge it was to 100% the hack without using safestates. It was and still is pretty hard but never frustrating or tedious imo.
    I really hoped for a sequel that is made in the same style as this game but that never happend unfortunately.
    But now I‘m very excited for your new hack! Can‘t wait to get to play it^^

    Ach ja, ich liebe solchen Behind The Scenes Stuff. Deine damaligen Videos hatten mich ja auch dazu inspiriert gehabt, selber mal an nem kleinen Projekt zu arbeiten. Auch wenn es zu dem Zeitpunkt bereits bessere Tools gab, war das ganze immer noch sehr frustrierend, weil halt nicht immer alles so läuft, wie man es gerne hätte (in meinem Fall insbesondere: Lava wollte nicht immer wie ich sie gern gehabt hätte). Naja, das Projekt wurde aus Zeitgründen nie ansatzweise fertig, aber der Flugkappenschalter war super und es war trotzdem ein unterhaltsames Projekt).
    Zu Super Mario 74 war mein Lieblingslevel die Zornesklippe mit der Luminospähre auf der #2. Ich liebe bei letzterer insbesondere die Drehgeschichte, auch wenn ich das Original am besten finde. Wenn es nicht Limitationen gebe wäre eventuell auch eine gemischte Version, bei der man in der Stage wechseln könnte, super. Aber wir wollen SM64 mal nicht überstrapazieren.

    This was the second hack I played, after star road. It greatly improved my skills and all together it was very nice to play. Bad things do not neccesarily change my oppinion, especcially if they don't repeat too much throughout the game. I'll try to say something about a bunch of levels that I remember as good in some way.
    -Devills dice, which I played before the normal edition, was a good transition from friendly to evil. First, I thought I couldn't obtain any star, so I needed to push myself to do it. I didn't notice the first floor also but as soon as I noticed that there should be something there, I immediately wanted to explore it.
    -Vine thing (ee). I liked the atmosphere as a part of this extreme hack, and the close-yet-so-far-away-ness of the stars. In 74 it was a bit simple and out of place.
    -Azure abyss. I mostly liked the small creek at the side. The most eye-catching part of deepred depths is just for idiots, but most of the shorter missions are fine.
    -Toxic terrace, which I like because it's used in so many ways and the missions which are short but challenging.
    -Bowsers beautiful backyard. I remember the walljump struggling while hearing the music as a good time, lol.
    -Icecrystal tower. I really liked the climbing to the top.
    -Lava cave. In 74 it was nice but it felt pretty normal, I think mostly due to the music. That changed in ee. The nusic got nicer and in one time, I felt very dependant on the developers choices, which was something to think about.
    -System of a town. I could live with the bad underwater camera. The level was pretty nice to explore.
    -Flower fields felt like dice fortress, but a bit better.
    -The desert didn't feel as much as an actual desert as shifting sand land. Overgrown oasis felt more where it should be. It was nice to explore, though.
    -I learnt important skills in the factory and it was nice to explore. I liked the closed atmosphere and music of drowned factory, but playing through the level was meh.
    -The sphere levels are the best things I've ever seen in sm64 romhacks. They look as spectacular as intimidating, which truly fits for the last levels and gives something to think about. While playing through the levels, I enjoyed every single place (except where amps bothered me). First, I didn't recognise ombru as the upside down of luminium. For me, it was just the same style but drawn and themed differently. That lasted until I saw the upside down cube. The same went for veneno and crudelo, I just couldn't believe that they were all the same 3d model. I'm impressed about how everything fits so nicely for all the orientations to be possible. Did you draw every detail with that in mind? The last 2 orientations are in lost universe 1.5 kappowsers legacy and they work pretty good for skilled players.
    -I still haven't spoken to the bob omb in crystal palace, but until the shield it was hard but awesome to play. The music, style and theme nicely fit together.
    Conclusion: I think this hack is very adventurous, educational and good for how it is. It's defenitely one of my favourite hacks, also for today's standards. I look forward to project 74, a 60 fps version of your game (pc port if that will happen) and to a bts video of extreme edition

    • @Lugmillord
      @Lugmillord  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much for the long comment and your thoughts on the levels! It's really funny how people either think the spheres are the best levels of the hack or the absolute worst. Pretty polarising.
      As for the design process, I only thought of the two "base" rotations (Luminium / Ombru) and when I came to the EE spheres I just looked at the 4 remaining rotations and took what seemed to be best suited and requires the least adjustments to work. Really, that decision was quite easy though. Two had a nice S-shaped path from bottom to top (or something close) and two didn't, so yeah, that was a no-brainer.

I did my hack (that I will hopefully release after years of doing nothing) on older versions of SM64 Editor as well and most areas were designsed with that 8192x8192 units limiation in mind. And I agree that smaller levels are way better than oversized ones.

    I would love to see a video like this for Extreme Edition! It would especially be cool to see what you really intended the player to do in Ztar Zanctuary. The sign mentions something about 30 red coins across the whole level and that sounds completely insane!

      Yeah, ZZ would definitely be harder than Crudelo if it wasn't for the limitations that forced me to put the interior under the quick sand pit. As for the 30 coins - since I never had the chance to start placing them, there is no actual planned layout for them.

    Hey Lugmillord! How has it been? Really liked the video! This is a timeless classic in the SM64 romhacking history. I don't have a personal favorite but to all the preference coming from the community I'd say the Sphere levels, rating in this order: Ombru > Luminium < Veneno > Crudelo.
    I have to agree the major issues that hit this game was the camera control and the backtrack climb from the overworlds when you die and get a star, oh and not to mention, the Sunny Beach coins. Despite those, it has its own feel and identity and this is why it remains part of my likelihood with Missing Stars and a couple old-timer TT64 hacks. Also ever consider to make a comeback with a hack different to SM74 or do you think the community must follow its legacy to learn how to make a custom level?
    While I'm at it, I'd like to give you the time to announce that I'm actually developing a quite "unofficial" sequel to Super Mario 74 which fuses both details between the original and Extreme Edition (per the models you showcased). As I've already started last week, I rather have you as the original creator to give me the seal of approval to the concept and I want to pay you my respects as it hits the decade since the demo release/previews. If yes, then look forward to it along the Project 74 Redone which is a different perspective of what mine is going for by far! Dev livestreams are in my Twitch channel if you are interested. :)

    • @Lugmillord
      @Lugmillord  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely agree on Veneno > Crudelo.
      As for you hack idea, well, go for it I guess. Up to this point so many people wanted to remake 74 but so far none has completed anything, with Project 74 being seemingly the farthest. Personally I have no issue with several hacks in development, but I think you should at least ask the Project 74 guys if they are fine with you doing your own thing.
      As for what I'm up to... let's just say you should keep an eye out in the next weeks. that's all I'm gonna say.

    • @LinCrash
      @LinCrash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! Also don't worry, the PJ74 team is already aware of what I'm up to and I can't wait for their recreation because we are part of the community. My idea is that the game takes place in the future after EE and the world is slowly restored with changes Mario did not expect so he's investigating what could possibly alter it behind the scenes... I've got a couple themes and ideas you want to see, if not for the technical difficulties encountered back then but thanksfully the ROM Manager is here to grant these, such as custom Bowser fights and new parallel camera. People like CartoonBuffoon were curious about my project but as long as I get a few done, I'll show a sneak peek.

Things changed and you can use Bowser and bosses of any choice to fit into the kind of fight stage imaginable.

    The Sphere Levels, oh boy, I just did them yesterday and today, a world a day, but the thing is, I'm doing a Let's Play, but 3 years prior, I recall using a bunch of Save States, I believe because I remember the Lava level prior having some finicky Flight you have to do, which I thought was annoying, but today I'm not sure if I had used more Save States before Molten Treasure Chest.
    But the thing is, I thought I needed to practice for Luminium-Sphere, but I haven't for 3 years, nor did I really played SM64 that much, so because I wanted this Let's Play to be done with, I decided to go in raw, as I thought I would need Save States regardless of if I practiced, but no... I tried to go as far as I could without them, and yeah, I managed to do both Luminium and Ombru-Spheres without ANY Save States, at least outside of praciticing some complicated parts, and I even broke all the Empty ! Boxes along the way. I was incredibly surprised I managed to pull it off, especially since I left it on the backburner during all this time due to these levels (I had watched another person play it).
    So, I think I've come to really appreciate the challenge aspect of the Sphere Worlds, they were hard, but while I'm not going to say all Stars were fun, well I did got a good amount of fun out of these, and despite all hardship, getting all of their 7 Stars, I was very satisfied. I'm starting to think this feeling of accomplishment and personal growth as a gamer was what you may've been looking for with these, so *Thumbs Up*.
    Although, if I managed to do the Spheres without Save States, I gotta wonder why I did for the previous Levels, it just about makes me want to scratch my Let's Play so far that I've started in 2015 or so...

      @@Lugmillord Yeah exactly, I really like seeing myself improve, which I believe is a feeling not many people look for these days, heck that feeling is maybe one of the key reasons I truly like video games since I almost left them at some point, I prefer stuff that values my time with newfound skill, like Dark Souls; of course I was a newbie at that series at first, but nowadays, I struggle to even get a challenge, even using the Hollow Soldier Set, I could beat every bosses on the 1st or 3rd Try, but I was left hungry for more.
      I will admit I did got angry during my SM74 Let's Play, in the past days of recording, but I keep coming back, so I guess there's something I like? Could just be my competitive spirit that makes me angry, but even then, I still like overcoming the hurdles I've set on myself, it's been somewhat of a driving force for me for 8 years, and I'll try to keep in mind the age of the Hack, especially since I saw your Analysis on Extreme Hacks, that video gave me some more insight on the subject.

I could blame my lack of skills and my inexperience in speedrunning tricks to traverse, but I still find the endgame (especially the last two levels) to be Kaizo level difficult. As a result, despite enjoying the hack overall, the endgame left a super sour taste in my mouth. I find the presentation to be super dated by modern ROM hacks standards, but since they were limitations especially back in 2011, I can understand that. I'm sure if you were to remake the game today with brand new textures and rebalance the difficulty, this ROM hack will be amazing. sorry, aber ich muss es auf deutsch machen.

      Geld brauche ich nicht, Zeit wäre aber schön. ;) Bzgl. Remake empfehle ich dir "Project 74" im Blick zu halten. Das ist eine Gruppe von Leuten, die an einem Remake basteln (das hoffentlich irgendwann auch mal fertig wird...). Hitzeschlag Oase und Zornesklippe sind auch eine gute Wahl.

    I really liked how the game constantly mocked you for being bad. It would just give you motivation to complete it at 100%. I guess it's an advantage of media made not for commercial purpose -you can't really sell something that mocks the consumer.

      @@Lugmillord Yeah, I said something like "People still do things that really go against your extreme hack tips video (I admit I've been an offender), so I'd say that even with today's standards, there's still things to learn from SM74/EE's design"

    • @Lugmillord
      @Lugmillord  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ShiN3Star You know, the cool thing about hacking is that by using editors, people can try things out and get creative without the need of deep coding knowledge. Even when people don't follow my tips, I still encourage everyone to make hacks. Even if it doesn't turn out all that good, it's still a great learning experience. If someone watches my EE tips video after making a hack and then thinks "oh, yeah, I went against most of these suggestions", then there's a good chance, they'll do better in the next one. They aren't rules that you have to obey, but once you internalize them, I think you can make your hacks more enjoyable.

      @@Lugmillord Yeah, I completely agree, but my point is that I think you'd really be able to help people improve their hacks' quality if you had the time, be it part of the tips you already gave, or some other bad design choices that you didn't mention.

    I disagree with your idea that the early levels are "too hard", I found them very instructive, skill-building, and manageable compared to say SM64StarRevenge, and on a very good difficulty curve compared to Star Road
