If united had man city depth they would probably win treble plus invincible that season. Or multi treble. There is a difference between having mahrez, laporte, kalvin phillips 180 million depth and nicky butt, blomqvist and teddy sheringham. Let alone having 5 subs you can rotate in out and out. United couldnt rotate their midfield cause literally they had 3 players for central midfield to play all the games 🤣
“Man City depth”
City had 22 players. Out of that, 3 of them are goalkeepers. Remaining 19.
Then you have Rico Lewis, and Cole Palmer. Remaining 17.
Then you have the injury issues of Kalvin Phillips and the limited game time of Sergio Gomez.
So all in all, 15 outfield players remain.
10 start, with 5 on the bench.
The city Depth is a myth. If anything, the team is good at creating multiple positions for each player. We’ve recently seen Stones in MD and Silva at LB.

Anyways, thanks for all the comments, they're definitely interesting reads and provide a good sample of opinions mainly in favour of Man Uniteds. Think I mentioned it earlier but this is one of those "debates" that will be going on for the rest of both clubs' history, which is a good thing imo but I am a neutral in regards to the Manchester teams.
Apologies if I came on strong at times or anything, I just think the majority say Man Utd and merely wanted to offer reasons as to why City's win needs more credit than it's getting.
Original:
No way Man Utd would've won a treble with VAR and a world cup mid season. And the game is way more demanding nowadays than back then especially with Pep's approach.
Also Man Utd had the opportunity to stop the treble, and failed.
Edit - amazing how many people ignore the mid season world cup, or try to justify that it wasn't important because apparently footballers were better back in the 1990s merely because rules were more lax... There were still plenty of matches to compete in even with the stop-start nature, and the pace of the game gets ruined under VAR.
Also, the 1990s had a massive drinking culture within football, and it was only really when Wenger came in with his training & dietary routines that things began to change, and he only came in at 1996. So basically younger players under stricter routines would do better vs the older players and even the players of clubs who did not adopt any of these measures.
What Fergie did at Utd was great, but I believe with these factors mentioned that Pep's accomplishment outshines 1999. I would agree that the 1999 treble was more special given the players coming through the youth system and all, but that doesn't make it the better accomplishment imo given the factors I have mentioned.
Edit 2 -
Just calculating the premier league in 1999 and 2023 - the GD of all clubs come to 0 in both seasons. The notion that football was better back then because of strong defensive play doesn't really hold much water. The bigger teams score more whilst the poorer teams concede more. Would say that's a good example of the difference in quality of the clubs in the top half vs the bottom half and how it's widened over the years.
And I don't buy into the argument that the footballers in the 90s were better merely due to the game being more physical. Game today is generally high pressing & fast paced football if you want to do well, and that is just as demanding if not more given the strict routines required for the modern game now.
Edit 3 -
I'm of the opinion that people overexaggerate how great football was back in the 90s. I'm of the opinion that a lot of it comes down to nostalgia, especially after having to watch how VAR and soft rules are nowadays. I'm sure people won't agree with that, but nostalgia in general is a strong bias (gaming is a great example - e.g. MW2 back in '09).
Anyways, thanks for all the comments, they're definitely interesting reads and provide a good sample of opinions mainly in favour of Man Uniteds. Man City didn't win the treble so easily, most of the time they were second behind Arsenal in the league. And in the FA Cup Final they only won by one goal, in the UCL Final they also won by one goal and if it hadn't been for Lukaku they probably would have lost that.
United got given the group of death faced the best teams in every competition
Yeah Robbie , the way United beat Arsenal in the that FA cup, Semi Final with only 10 men, after Ryan Giggs took on half your Arsenal defence on his own.. was REALLY lucky!! 😂 🤣
Comprehensively? By financial doping?
3-0s, 4-0s, multiple 5-0s. This city team is the definition of dominant.
Remember they weren’t even in first before the WC break.
1 goal allowed in the FA cup…12 games
City is different in that they were absolute powerhouse dominating teams. Very impressive
But Utd's treble will always be more memorable.
Bunch of lads fighting and clawing their way past some of the biggest teams and players in history.
Pure Drama and class to watch.
for anyone forgetting, that 99 Man Utd have SCHMEICHEL, IRWIN, NEVILLE, STAM, ROY KEANE,BECKHAM, SCHOLES, ANDY COLE, YORKE AND SOLKSJAER...and yeah SAF on his prime that year
WTF??
A WIN IS A WIN
Cause you were too good to loose
Manchester united won the treble in the strongest era of football. Manchester City treble winner squad is very strong but at the time manchester united did it, there were a lot of good teams, good names than today's era either in England or whole europe. Manchester City won it when there were less contender and more teams are off form that us, arsenal can easily get second place instead of barely top 4. City were also lucky we bottle the league. Because of manchester united did it in the strongest era that make them didn't win it easily. Even us were a better team that time that we are now. It's ridiculous if you say manchester city have a better treble than manchester united. You need to look at what time they did it.
In terms of quality, City treble would've beaten Utd treble, all pundits agree.
But fans don't want to view from the quality perspective anyway.
Pundits are sometimes idiots and a lot of them have hatred towards united also the league was harder back then and players back then actually cared for the game and weren't greedy.
City struggled in the champions league final too DONT let that go over ya heads
I get the argument for either but crazy how when comparing stuff in football just if one is more recent than the other it’s always automatically better. I think if they played 10 times they’d beat each other five each, or even that United side would take 6.
I'll say if Man United squad of the 90s glorious days playing the current glorious Man City squad, the rivalry intensity will be out of this world. It would phase out all rivalry even Messi and Ronaldo El Classico.
City - machine
United - fortunate
😂😂😂😂😂
All the reasons Robbie listed is why I put the United one ahead of the City one it was more unexpected this City one once they got within a few points of Arsenal it was game over and was in the bag for a fair while.
City wins an UCL, they had a very deep squad..
And the top heavy team had to put their players for the World Cup..
Yes because it the third PL in a row, we beaten our city rival to take the FA cup and we won against 3x UCL champion to claim the trophy
Robbie is only saying this bc Arsenal lost the league and FA Cup that season
Look at the teams utd had to overcome in the champions league also look at the league and fa cup utd had to overcome a brilliant Arsenal team. And arsenal were a fantastic team
Imagine trying to downplay a win because it was a last minute winner absolute delusion see how he reacts if arsenal ever win a final in the last minute😂
Man Utd made the players that won the treble in the academy. City bought the best players with an unlimited transfer budget, and even so, with 115 charges of financial misconduct. That's the difference.
Breaking news, arsenal fan talking about treble😂
Would you rather win 5-0 or 3-2 having gone 0-2 down?
As a United supporter, I'll take the comeback win all day every day.
I rather win 5-0 cuz i can't take a heart attack
@@BarrentSanjaya then you'd have to support man city. Manchester United has always been a team you fall in love with because of the late come backs. Have you forgotten the world famous "Fergie time"? I fell in love with United not because we blew teams out of the water, but because we'd give our opposition hope and snatch it away at the last second. AMAZING!
@@Nicholas_Jackson_is_not_22 ok fair enough but if you not score big then you probably have more chance of losing than winning. You need luck to do a comeback win.
That's true.
But even if we get closer to the playing style of city, we'll have those special comeback wins. Always.
United had harder competition that’s why City looks more dominant. Who tf contended with city in the epl? Arsenal? Who have been mediocre for the last decade.
Every top team in the epl was struggling this year. And all the classic European top teams where also struggling. Madrid , Bayern, Chelsea, Liverpool, juventus. United won the treble against world class teams in the epl and Europe.
Best way to settle this is they play each other now. Can’t wait to see a 53 year old David May trying to prevent Haaland smashing a shot past a 59 year Peter Schmeichel!😂😂😂
the defenders they had then would have send haaland to hospital like in first 20 seconds
City left no question unanswered. Dominant home and abroad. Utd were great, but a Last minute Bergkamp penalty miss and a battering from Bayern in the Champions League final was flukey.
I'd take though.
Let’s be real competition back on the day was far greater
No one forgets their first....
And their only ever 😂. Good luck united
Just enjoy both 👍
Manchester City’s can be considered a late winner. They were actually outplayed to be fair.
