I'm a lifelong Chiefs fan, but I grew up idolizing Steve Young. I'll never forget that playoff game where he hit TO to beat Green Bay. I'll also never forget that game v the Cardinals that ended his career. He's always been such a good dude and that's uncommon for such an accomplished athlete.

In a football ecosphere where every interviewee just keeps repeating the same things everyone says, Steve Young interviews are refreshing. Young constantly says things that you don’t expect and reveal a lot of consideration and thought behind his answers.

I remember back in 1970 playoffs, the 49ers beat the Vikings on the road in old Memorial Stadium only to lose the next week to the Cowboys in their last game at Kezar. That’s when I started following them as a little kid in my PJs. Hopefully they can catch a couple breaks and win one. Niners fans were pretty spoiled in the 80s.

This interview brought back a memory for me. Steve talking about the SF-DAL rivalry back in the early 90s. HUGE. Just as he said - like Godzilla vs King Kong. Some of the most anticipated games ever. I grew up in the Bay. Through the Walsh-Montana-Rice years. And on through SY and those years. In 1991 I went down to Miami (job-related). Was there through late 94. I can still vividly remember once or twice during that stretch when SF and DAL were set to play. Great games. And you know what WE got to watch in Miami? Always some game with either NYG or NYJ. Bad teams playing opponents who were likely even worse. Horrible games. All because of the massive amount of NY'ers that had moved to FL or spent winters there. No lie. The rest of the country was watching 49ers-Cowboys and we'd be shown NYJ-CHI or something like that. Drove me nuts. Thankfully I got out of there in OCT 94, back to SF Bay Area, and got to enjoy their Super Bowl.

I'm not sticking up for Mahomes but Steve Young and Joe Montana and those Niner Teams had the fortune of playing on a team that in a Non Salary Cap Era had the highest payroll for 11 years straight. I think there were 17 times where the Niners spent either more on offense or defense than 17 teams combined payrolls altogether. And no ran the ball when he wanted to like John Elway. Elway hurt linebackers when he contacted them. Mahomes and Steve Young would be left like jigsaw puzzle pieces.

TB was awful that year as usual but SY kept them w/i 7 for the 1st half but the fans demanded Vinny. VT started the 2nd half and spent it face planting on the turf. TB traded SY TO SF after the season for nearly nothing and the rest is history.

I think anyone that understands football knows that game management is important, but I think us fans/media just fall in love with, at Steve put it, QB's who put the cape on and become Superman. Kyle Shanahan talked about it the other night too---essentially said that game management is a requisite to the QB position. Check it down... extend drives... don't make the risky throw if it's not there. If you can convert third downs, you extend drives and give yourself and your offense more opportunities in the game and keeps the opposing offense on the sideline. Purdy's game against the Lions was a good example of it. He just did enough of it so that the 49ers could continue their drives... And the ultimate example... Tom Brady. The guy was outstanding at making sure his teams were in a good position to play the game.

I was a Vikings fan during Steve’s era. Anyways, for some reason, the Vikings did well against Montana - I remember one playoff victory in particular, I think in San Francisco - but Steve Young really gave the Vikings problems. I suppose it was probably because Steve had a better arm than Joe did and Steve had wheels too. Steve always seemed to rip off a big run against the Vikings that broke their backs.

The "Clark Kent" analogy for Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy or any QB is really fascinating. You want the ability to put on the 'cape' and become Superman when needed. But you don't want to strut around as Superman all the time. You have to put on the cape only when it is necessary.

Young was so good 9ers let the og GOAT, Joe cool go to the Chiefs after winning 4 SBs and earning multiple MVPs with the 9ers. 9ers wanted to have Young start over Joe so he went to Chiefs and led them to an AFC title game. If there were football Gods, they wouldn't let 9ers prevail in SB against Chiefs because of their transgression against Joe 😀!
Young was awesome no doubt and added a dimension with his running ability Joe didn't have, and maybe nobody had in combination with arm strength and accuracy (Elway poss). Would've liked them to keep Joe starting until his injuries shut the door. 9ers had an embarrassment of riches at QB position for years for sure.

Elway possibly you say? John Elway was ALL DECADE in the 1990's and only 1 QB is picked every 10 years for that honor. Elway could throw a ball at Candlestick over to the next State in Oregon if he wanted too then he could run and get it back

    • @crohm42
      @crohm42 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, Elway was super talented, I just didn't watch him as much as Young and I thought they both had srrong arms (adv Elway), also had great accuracy (push), but remember Young being a better, more elusive runner (adv Young). Young could win games with his legs like Vick and Lamar but also was great in the pocket.
When I did watch Elway it was when his teams got beat badly in the SBs which probably weren't his best games.
Anyways, I think Young and Elway are a good comp, Elway had the better overall career for sure though.

Brock is Humble and doesn't talk himself up. Steve. Lova ya, but you said the prototype was 6ft 1 or 6ft 2, and 220lbs that can run and has an arm. Brock is 6ft 1. 223lbs and threw the ball 56 mph. As a reference, Kaep threw the fastest in the nfl at 59 mph. And for the record Brock HAS scrambled away, outrun defensive players and thrown it side arm to a receiver. U should know thos. But... The Reality is that at the end, those physical attributes don't matter as much. Age does kick in. It's how Brady beat Mahomes in the SB. Real attributes are quick reads (intelligence), accuracy, and awareness.

Remember he got wide open in the 4th qtr on 3rd and 15 when we were up 20-10 MANN and with the Statue that wouldn't take shots 20+yrds down the field a guy that seemed to second guess his arm 🤔 and only extended plays when he wanted. Kyle should've been feeding Raheem Mostert after Hill helped get the Chiefs get in the red zone so they could make it a 20-17 game "49ers" to keep the ball out of PAT, HILL, KELCE, and HARDMAN HANDS while trying to score but, he didn't so the outcome after that 3rd and 15 I'm too fast for anyone play that where HILL was WIDE OPEN with 7yrds of space on all sides. I get what you’re saying but chiefs fan don’t talk about trying to get to 4 even though they already have 3 and this would be the fourth for the organization. They talk about them getting 3 or going back to back because they have nothing to do with a super bowl win from forever ago. The only guy I know of with a ring on the 49ers is aware who got it with KC. It just sounds pathetic for y’all to still be bragging about having 5 when they were all won before I was even born and it takes away the personal connection to these actual players who care about winning winning one farrrrr more than they care about a fanbase that hates them half the time getting to say they have 6

Why do you say that? He was up against some heavy competition between 1991-98 (Dallas; Green Bay). Personally speaking, I don't think Joe Montana would have beaten the Cowboys in the 1992 & '93 NFC title games.
Technically, Young does have three rings - two as Joe Montana's backup, and one as a starter.

Jumping in on this convo...love Montana and Young. However, I think the 9ers should have kept Joe as the starter, when healthy, until his play was obviously below Steve's.
Joe had the "it" factor and ability to perform in the biggest moments that Steve seemed to lack. I do think Joe would've gotten them another SB before he was done.
Maybe it's that Joe has a special place in 9er fans heart and a mystique as a 4 time, undefeated SB champ. Maybe Joe's teams were better and competition wasn't as stiff compared to Steve's teams. I'd have to go back study the rosters and their rivals to see.
Felt like Steve and company should have gotten at least 1 more SB. Steve's team that won it was LOADED and should've won. They had a couple disappointing playoff exits, losing to the Falcons in the NFC chip comes to mind.
But, maybe it's just that Joe and crew set the bar and standard so high for 9er fans who started watching them as kids (me inc) and didn't know different; nobody, not even the great Steve Young, could live up to Joe's standard.
Regardless, both Joe and Steve were 2 of the best QBs ever and great guys. I'm thankful for all they gave to 9ers and fans and all the great memories.

@@crohm42 That's a great post. Yeah, Steve Young & Co. probably should have won more than one Super Bowl! Green Bay really had their number between 1995-97.
You made a great point: Joe and his squads in the '80s set the bar so high that it was difficult for even a two-time MVP like Steve Young to live up to it.
I'm a Cowboys fan, but I loved both guys. I really did! I've always had mad respect for the 49ers.

Because the pros know the Chiefs offense hasn't been great this year. They managed under 30 points to the Broncos.... In 2 games. They also know the Chiefs D is really good but has a huge weakness: The run game.
If the game is close, Mahomes can magic his way to a win. But he's not going to win a high scoring game.
