This is a master class in good leadership. Reacher stayed calm when his folks were insulted (something I struggle with on occasion), defending his people, gave the offending party a chance to correct themselves, and when things got physical, you made sure they knew how was in charge. I see too many superior officers at all ranks do jack shit to protect their subordinates when other people not in their chain of command get involved in all the wrong ways. I've seen O6s that need to be knocked down a peg who don't have a clue, and demand the chain of command be used to speak to them, but have no problem breaking it when talking down, rather than going to their ISIC.
I don't understand the "You're at least thee short" comment. It sounds like he was saying they'd need at least fifteen people to take on Reacher's nine. Where did THAT ratio come from? I'd prefer a simple "You're at least six short" implying they'd need at least two on one to stand a chance.
I am not familiar with military ranks, like at all. So can someone explain, at least to me, in dummy talk, why did that guy feel so offended by the master sergeant being there? Why does it matter?
It's an "Officer's" Club, and she's a Master Sergeant which is Enlisted/ Non-commissioned rate. Like white-collar vs blue-collar. Enlisted rates are like Private, Corporal, Specialist, Sergeant, Warrant, Petty Officer,, Sergeant-Major, Staff Sergeant, Chief, etc. Officers are like Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Commander, Colonel, General, Commodore, Admiral. She's just not high enough up the totem-pole to go there on her own, BUT most Enlisteds are allowed to be in most mess halls, bars, and Officer's Clubs if they're invited, or accompanying an officer, as their Adjutant. Normally she'd be drinking/ eating in a "Junior ranks" mess.
however what doesn't really make sense is that (even though the actress is really too young for the rank) the rank of Master Sergeant is a high enlisted rank, one that would take a lot of time and hard work to achieve and they get a very high level of respect from both other enlisted personnel and officers. She would in reality not have been spoken to that way and if she was the guy giving her grief would have been chewed out by his commanding officer for having done so. Its kind of like a newby doctor giving grief to a 30 year registered nurse...the doctor doesn't know shit in comparison even if they think they do just because they got an M.D.
So the issue here is Reacher is wearing a CID patch. I HIGHLY doubt an officer would be that rude to a guy whose job it is to not only investigate military crimes, but also catch trained killers. I REALLY doubt he'd be that rude to not only that guy mentioned above, but that guy who is also about 4" taller than him and has at least 30 pounds on him.
I don't know much about the Army culture, but I feel like no Lieutenant Colonel would care about an E8 in the Officer Club if they were invited by a Major. Also no Junior Officer would continue to talk like that once a Field Officer gave an explanation, in fact they would apologize to Reacher for acting so aggressive in front of him.
This was the one thing I didn’t like from this show, a bunch of officers talking to a E8 like she’s a private, definitely not a accurate military depiction
Totally unrealistic! The writer never spent a minute in uniform..it’s obvious. 1st, the Master Sergeant would never have made it thru the door. They check ID’s. (Unless you drive drunk). 3rd…a fight would not have happened…behavior unbecoming an officer will get you in trouble and possibly dismissed from the service. Reacher’s whole demeanor would never fly in the Army, CID gets some leeway, but never like what the show and books display. And lastly, I spent a lot of years in Em and NCO clubs as a kid and when I was in the Army. I never saw an Em club or NCO club look as nasty as that “Officers Club”.
