I have a Craftsmans 17 HP riding mower. I tried what you suggested. I pulled the spark plug and it turns over. I turned it over for at least a minute. I put the spark plug back in and it locks up again. Repeat and it does the same. Any suggestions
DUDE!!!...You are the man!!!...tipped mower up to take blade off to get sharpened...forgot to put mower back down...2 days later put blade back on...and ran into the hydrolocke...but never heard of it...was resigned to scrapping the mower...but found your video...10 mins later...BINGO!!...thanks alot...saved me a few hundred bucks
I have 9.5 hp wood chipper that had not been used for 5 years. Would not start. Pull handle froze. Found and watched your video. Followed your instructions and freed up the freeze and fired her up! Thanks!
Donyboy is one of only a handful of good mower/small engine repair guys on TH-cam. Thank you for your hard work and insights. You have literally saved people thousands upon thousands of dollars.
Thank you from a single mom who has been learning alot about this lawnmower this year, (bought it couple summers ago and this summer it acts up) but have been able to keep it going thanks to this video for the most recent fix!!
You sure saved a couple of senior citizens a very costly trip to the small engine shop. This trick worked great on a Craftsman 6.5 hp mower we accidentally poured too much oil into.
I remember watching this video when it was new lol I was 11 then your one of the people that got me into working on lawn mowers because of working on lawn mowers I know how to work on atvs and gokart and motorcycles and now of course being 17 I have a truck so I learned to work on it. I probably wouldn't know how to do any of that stuff if I hadn't come across your channel and learned the basics of engine repair. thanks for what you do🖒
thanks man! you're a life saver. borrowed my neighbors tiller, same symptoms, tried to pull start and nothing! followed these steps, smoked out my neighborhood and now I'm good to go! lol. thanks again. saved me.
Thank you Dony. I overfilled my chipper with oil. I found your video, removed the spark plug and the oil came pouring out. Was able to start and am now back in business. Outstanding!
I made this mistake yesterday not thinking properly. I overfilled my lawn boy with oil. Man. Thanks for tips. I love your videos. I have learned a lot over the years from your videos. Thank you!
Aw, beautiful! I stored my lawn mower upright for a couple of days to fix a cracked gas tank. The lawn mower shows the same symptoms of the pull cord being tough to pull and it won't start. I'm going out right now to pull the plug. I'm sure you nailed the issue. This video is the only one on TH-cam that clearly explains the problem. Many thanks!
It is rare to find help for the exact problem I have(for me at least :/ ). This happend to a pressure washer that tipped over in my truck.Almost lost the job. This is not the first time you have helped me Dony. Thank you so much for doing these, being clear and easy to follow.
This worked exactly as in the video. Removed spark plug, pulled the starter about 20 times, wiped off the spark plug and replaced and mower started on the 1st pull. Saved me the $250 I was about to spend on a new mower. Thanks!
Perfect instructions, tons of smoke, fixed in 5 minutes. Saved me $100+ and several hours of dealing with the sleazy lawn mower repair guy. Love youtube EDIT: And this video is 5 years old still saving our ass tons of cash. thank you forever
This worked on a new snowblower. I brought it home tipped on its side to fit my car. I think the oil migrated to where it caused the hydro-lock. Would not crank over at all. Pulled the plug and then it could crank. No oil or gas came out. Put it back. Ran very dirty for 10 minutes, then fine. Thanks.
I honestly was about to bin the Honda GX200 I only recently bought second hand. But you explaining about the oil, my engine must have rolled around in the back of the car. Watched your video about 15mins of pulling and the pressure smoothed off and it kicked into life, the garage looked like it was on fire with amount of smoke!! Lol... Cheers for your straight and simple vids. No graphics or gimmicks just straight to the point! Nice one 👍
Hey man Thanks, I just changed the oil in my mower, ran it for about 10 min , came out today and it was froze, went out to buy a new one, couldn't find one, searched the web as a last ditch effort and saw this!! You just saved me 400 bucks, you rock!!
I had to do the same thing one day but didn’t need the quick start. I also managed to set the thing on fire another day by tipping it the wrong way while mowing on a steep hill.. Live and learn. Great video, thanks for the info!
You Sir, are my new God...lol I have subscribed, and of course liked your video. After searching for answers for days on the tube and everywhere trying different things I came across YOU, I knew right away, THAT'S IT! I went and did just what you said on a 1.5 yr old Toro that ran when I put it away for the winter and was frozen. I cut my lawn today and finished just before the storms are hitting and the building dept crawls up my tail. Thank you Thank you Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ROCK!
Thank you so much for this video! We thought our lawn mower was toast! It is running like a champ now and the grass is cut! Great instructions and great video!
Just came across a 22" weedeater at the end of a driveway... So far it will need two screws and a governor spring! The folks at Briggs sent me out the parts diagram for the engine! Can't wait to try firing it up!
I forgot to add that when I did put the spark plug back in, the pull cord wouldn't work at all. Nevertheless, I will keep repeating the process for awhile.
Okay, I don't know who you are, but I just used your video to fix my "hydro-locked" power washer in about 23 minutes, so as far as I'm concerned, you Sir are a f&(%!ng genius! THANK YOU!!!
I agree with the rest of these comments. You are one of the best MUTT's around (Multi Use Technician and Trainer). I would add, check the oil level and bring it up to the correct level before starting.
I know nothing about small engines. This was a giant help. All I knew was my pull cord wouldn't pull. .... right after I had tipped over the mower to clear it of grass. So everything you said and explained made perfect sense. I took out the spark plug, and sure enough the pull chord suddenly worked and shot out a ton of oil with the first pull.... but none of the rest. Good stuck, thank you :-)
very nice, you almost sound like a shop teacher. very calm and clear in what you say. i just subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more. thank you
Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I was thinking for sure I locked up the engine, but I stored the mower up just as you noted and that was my problem. Thank you!
Yes you have remained thorough in your videos but yet u make it where us diyers can understand. Thanks Dony boy 73. And thanks 4 u tube. For allowing us to be able to see his videos
I got yard machines push mower with the big back wheels from a guy today for $10 this thing is like new. he said that the engine was blown and locked up and oil was coming from the muffler.it was hydrolock just like the mower in your video and he put way too much oil in it .mower runs great now after doing the same thing you did in this video .now ill sell it on Craigslist for $75 thanks a lot .
Thanks, I picked up a MTD yard man mower at a moving sale that didn't run. It was only 3 yrs old. After discovering it was over full of oil by a lot. I did just this I. Addition to draining some oil out and new plug, it worked fine.
This is a highly motivation to every one! Like you said, Ill dump my lawn mower due is not working but many time is an easy solution! Keep posting videos on that way, congrats bro....
AFTER WATCHED YOUR VIDEO , I DO THE SAME TILT THE MOWER UNTIL OIL CAME OUT MOST OF IT AND REMOVED SPARK PLUG CLEANED , FIRST TRIED IT STARTED LOT OF SMOKE CAME OUT BUT NO LUCK . TOMORROW WILL GET DIFFERENT CHEMICAL CLEAN OILED WET SPARK PLUG AND TRY AGAIN . THANK YOU SO MUCH .
This has always been one of my favorite repairs. Always a quick fix, especially when a careless lawn crew doesn't close the fuel shut off before transporting a long distance or on the highway. I also make sure to change the oil if fuel is in it at least twice to get all the gas out of the crankcase and not damage any internal components, especially the aluminum connecting rod.
Thanks a lot. I knew it was not the spring. So kept Searching you tube and found your video. I have same lawnmower and has oil coming out of muffler. Saved me a lot of time and aggravation.
Excellent tutorial. I couldn't get any ether into the engine to get it started, but after a few attempts, I was able to use the primer bulb to squirt a little gas in it to keep it going.
Right on. I had a B&S engine on a rough cut mower that I couldn't even pull the rope on. Yes I stored it over the winter up at about a 45 degree angle. After removing the plug; pulling the rope to force out all the oil above the piston; checking the crankcase oil level, cleaning the plug off completely with denatured alcohol and drying it, it started right up.
Oh - thanks! So, you think the problem is with the carb? Does it require a complete rebuild, or can I replace those things just by removing the bowl? If you can't tell, I'm a real novice at homeownership and small engine repair. I inherited the riding mower from my folks and they dropped it off at my house, so I don't even have a trailer to take it to a mechanic to get fixed. I really appreciate your help.
100% on the money. Just saved an MTD at the curb with this exact problem. Oil level was too high, saturating the air filter. Corrected the oil level, replaced the air filter, and changed the plug for good measure. Also had to pop the butterfly free, mine is the fresh start no prime system Briggs. After doing that, the mower runs like new. My neighbor was shocked. Lol. Said he did not need the machine, got an electric one. Yea right. Lol.
I had the same problem, it was hard to pull and I left it standing upright in the garage. Quick Google search and I found this video, 10 minutes later I was mowing the lawn!
This happened to my pressure washer today, and generator sometime last year.. haven’t tried to fix either yet but glad to know that this problem has a solution- thank you!
I bought a new mower and after about 10 minutes normal use smoke started to come out of the muffler and started to build and build until it shut down. The oil level was at recommended level. Air filter wasn’t blocked. It would run better if the oil level was on the low side but the same thing would happen. I returned it to the store. What do you think was wrong with it? I did not tip the mower with oil in it, level the whole time.
Thanks for posting this! I had exactly the same symptoms on the engine on my leaf vacuum, and this method helped me to get it started. Good advice! Thank you again.
I find your video helpful. I have all the symptoms of hydro lock. My problem is when I connect the spark plug back up I can hardly pull back the cord. What do you think I should do?
Great clear video of how to do this but I would add some safety tips. Because there will be someone who does this badly, maybe encourage the use of a dust mask, goggles and clean up the excess oil & starter fluid before starting the engine again. Other than that your clips are the best to follow.
Wow! This was helpful! My brother wants to build a go kart with a lawnmower engine, so he put the engine in a box to store it. It was on it's side, so oil was leaking out of the muffler. I gues I know how to fix it if he ever wants it to run again! I guess you need a horizontal crankshaft motor to build a go kart, because you can't put a vertical shaft motor sideways can you?
Hi,I am a retired gentleman. I am using my free time to learn about small engines. I recently got an older Briggs engine just to play with. I have viewed many You Tube videos but I really like yours. Very clear information. The engine I have came from a Craftsman 6.0 "Easy Starting Quiet". I am trying to see if I can get it going. The major issue I have is that it is very difficult to pull the starter rope even with the spark plug removed. Like I mean REAL difficult. I see the piston move up and down (I removed the cylinder head cover). Now before I go any further I'm wondering if the main bearing could be seized. How can I confirm that the main bearing on the crankshaft is bad? Thanks , Tom
Had a riding mower that would hydrolock due to gas in the cylinder due to a bad carb float. I thought. Replaced the carb and had the same issue. Bought a $7 in line fuel on off valve. Problem solved. Just have to remember to put the valve the appropriate position before and after use.
Thanks for very knowledgeable video >I have same lawn mower and i cant press the on the handle to start it its stuck any idea how can i unstuck or fix it please.
Thanks for the video. After trying several other things from other sources, simply clearing out excess oil in the spark plug like you showed solved my issue as well!
I have the same problem with a weedeater. Took spark plug off but nothing sprays out of the spark plug hole when I pull the starter cord. What would you suggest I do next?
Hi Dony! I have a lawnmower that someone put roundup in it by mistake and tried to start it (I know it's odd loll) but I've disassemble the carb and cleaned it all good and it started first pull, she ran good for about 20 minutes no problem then it stopped suddenly, I tried to restart it but she had no compression at all. Do you think the roundup can had damaged the cylinder rings or maybe the valves? (sorry for the bad english, i'm french) Thanks
Thanks for the video...I have the same problem with one of my mowers..but its a Kawasaki motor ..wanted to know where yet were located so you could take a look
I have a Craftsmans 17 HP riding mower. I tried what you suggested. I pulled the spark plug and it turns over. I turned it over for at least a minute. I put the spark plug back in and it locks up again. Repeat and it does the same. Any suggestions
here's repair solution in this video th-cam.com/video/T1anxdNWf5Y/w-d-xo.html

Donyboy73, What a time saver! For the most part, your videos are always short and sweet. I am smiling so hard right now, you're the best!
thanks lol
I did these things, and the pull cord works when I remove the spark plug, but the mower wouldn't start. What now?
you may still have oil in the cylinder, you may have to repeat the process
I forgot to add that when I did put the spark plug back in, the pull cord wouldn't work at all. Nevertheless, I will keep repeating the process for awhile.
donyboy73
This happened to my mower a few days ago. I used this technique and got it cleared, and she started right up. Thanks for putting these out there.
This worked great. The video was concise yet still gave all the information needed. You've allowed my 14-year old lawnmower to make it to 15.

I have that same push mower for at least the last 8-10 years, excellent mower. Great vid!
You’re a lifesaver today. Over oiled my tiller. Thanks

thanks this can be a help to people one time my friend had a hydro locked lawn mower and he got rid of it thinking the engine was blown

Thanks for posting this! Worked for me and saved me a trip to the shop.
Can that same process be used on my Coleman 1850 generator?
Don't forget to check the oil level. It may be low after this procedure (or high if that's what caused it in the first place)
Thank you a thousand times. You just saved me $200.
princez413 you're welcome
Don't forget to check the oil level afterwards! Great video
great thanks my mower is the same as the one shown, and had the same problem, runnin like a champ now , thanks.

Just fixed my lawnmower thx to your video! Thank you!
This happened to my pressure washer today, and generator sometime last year.. haven’t tried to fix either yet but glad to know that this problem has a solution- thank you!
Thanks very much Dony. Worked like a charm. Saved me time/money in the repair shop. Much appreciated!
looks like safety switch is cut of under the seat,it truns over when I jump the solenoid,I really appreciate it dony thanks bud,for ur inputs
Hey thank you so much for this fix. exactly what my problem was and saved me a trip to store for repairs. much appreciated
thanks for the great video!
like the old saying goes, you learn something new every day.
Thank you for the helpful video, ended up gettting the lawnmower running and i burned off the oil like you said and its running great!
any brand

my neffew hydro locked my new minibike I thought it was toast till I saw this video very good job thank you
I have had this trouble, And done the same. But without the quick start
if the blade is bent it will vibrate, also make sure the shaft was not bent, I have a video on a lawnmower with a bent shaft
I find your video helpful. I have all the symptoms of hydro lock. My problem is when I connect the spark plug back up I can hardly pull back the cord. What do you think I should do?
i would have to see it then, if it kicks back the flywheel key may need to be replaced
Great advice, and easy to do. You've saved so many of us a bunch of headaches! I'm so glad I've subscribed to your channel. Great!!!!
Thanks for the sub!
Great clear video of how to do this but I would add some safety tips. Because there will be someone who does this badly, maybe encourage the use of a dust mask, goggles and clean up the excess oil & starter fluid before starting the engine again. Other than that your clips are the best to follow.
Great job donyboy73 your a awsome small engine doctor.
@JameKugelmann if the plug is wet that means the plug or coil is too weak, if the plug is dry then there is no gas going to the engine
Wow! This was helpful! My brother wants to build a go kart with a lawnmower engine, so he put the engine in a box to store it. It was on it's side, so oil was leaking out of the muffler. Do u have to use quick start or can u use something else
YOU CAN USE ANYTHING FLAMMABLE
Thanks for very knowledgeable video >I have same lawn mower and i cant press the on the handle to start it its stuck any idea how can i unstuck or fix it please.
Thanks for the video. After trying several other things from other sources, simply clearing out excess oil in the spark plug like you showed solved my issue as well!
I have the same problem with a weedeater. Took spark plug off but nothing sprays out of the spark plug hole when I pull the starter cord. What would you suggest I do next?
Thank you!! Exactly what I needed to get my generator running at midnight.
(sorry for the bad english, i'm french)
Thanks
