This always brings up memories of my great-grandfather, who died in the Somme area in 1918, a mere two months after he got to the front line. I'm lucky I have a photo of him, and his grave is marked and well maintained, making visits possible. WAY too many families lost loved ones with no such closure.

Lemmy was a lot deeper than a lot of people gave him credit for. R.I.P. Lemmy

He played up to the hard rocking, hard living stereotype, and he was that too, but yeah, he was so much more too. I always say to people who underestimate him to check out Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me.

Lemmy wrote a masterpiece with this. RIP Lemmy legend! I had the pleasure to meet you once and talk to you for a while and I will never forget the drinks we had and the conversation, where you actually listened to what a fan had to say. A true hero! He wrote this piece after watching a documentary about the battle of the Somme. This is one of these songs that you will never forget, once you've heard it.

@@SaeedReacts. He was a bad ass rock star, but at the same time such a kind person with a huge heart. I met him at his fav. bar, the Rainbow in LA and we sat down and talked for like 2 hours. I was totally drunk, when I left and I didn't pay a cent. I will never forget these 2 hours talking to an absolute legend man to man.

@@ingobordewick6480 every person that I have ever heard of that actually met him talks about genuinely kind and what an amazing human being he was. He never got a big ego like so many “rockstars” do.

I speak as a veteran. No matter what era or country you fought in and for, it has always been about those you stood shoulder to shoulder with. So no matter if you are Danish, Japanese, American. The guys you see across the barrel of your rifle are also your brothers in arms.

Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916. Mostly a British Offensive in the North of France, Thousands took part in what was called Pals Battalions. Lads from the same town and cities joined up with the promise they would fight together. In the first day alone the British suffered over 57,000 casualties. 19,000 Were killed before noon in the largest loss of life by the British Army in a single day for 3 miles of ground. When the Battle ended, their were over 1 million casualties suffered from all sides. The Brits and French took 6 miles of ground in the end.

Lemmy was a brilliant lyricist, and a serious amateur historian. He was a legendary rocker, icon, partier, but his appearance and legend was just a sliver of the person he was. This is the best, but many of his songs had amazing lyrics (Orgasmatron, When the Eagle Screams, Deaf Forever, ... goes on and on ). His lyrics tend to be very direct and unadorned.

Lemmy is secretly one of the best songwriters of the last 50 years... and most have no idea.. and I think its becuse of Ace of Spades... a great song...one of Lemmys masterpieces (he probably wrote it in 10 minutes], but it cursed the band to a degree becuse most assume they're just the "Ace of Spades" band. Lemmy also wrote one of Ozzy's biggest hits, "Mama I'm Comin Home", as well as a few other songs on Ozzy's "No More Tears" album.
A few other great deep Motorhead cuts... "God Was Never On Your Side", "I Am The Sword", "Keys to the Kingdom", "March or Die", "Orgasmatron", and "Back At the Funny Farm"

The youngest British soldier in WW1 was 12, Sidney Lewis, he fought at Delville Wood, the Battle of the Somme, there were many like him, now we have grown men landing on the beaches of South East England pretending to be children...

I'm a Motorhead fan (albeit a late one) so i had never heard this song. As a lover of modern war history, i really appreciate this song, plus the fact it is very un-Motorhead-like. Good to hear a slower song from them, as their discography is mostly speed metal (which i love). Thanks Saeed...this is why i watch these reactions...i'm hoping to hear something new and i enjoy seeing others enjoy something i know.
