  • Today Melissa and I started staining and sealing the woodshed, I am very pleased with the Ready Seal we bought, I just have to figure out the best way to apply it. It works great on rough cut lumber off the mill and Im sure it would be a great stain sealant for fences, decks, sheds, or any wood that you want to protect from the elements.

I had a guy visit my neighborhood while it was finishing up being built. He did my fence for $350. He had a few 5 gallon buckets and a huge auto detailing sponge. He soaked up the sponge and wiped each panel, then he had an asistant follow behind him with a 8" brush to back brush and avoid drips and runs. They worked quick and covered alot of area fast. The sponge really helped get in between the panels. I was really pleased with the outcome.

I have been a residential painter for the past 16 years and I enjoy it very much. My advice for you is to get an airless sprayer, spray with a 213 tip and back roll all surfaces. It’s best to apply heavy and lay-off with a 1/2 roller nap. When the roller is soaked, you can unload it on a dry area off the woodshed that is next to be stained (so you won’t have double coated areas). I’m happy to answer any questions that arise. I’d offer my help but I’m in northern Michigan and that’s a hike for me for half a days work. Lol.

Mike I'm a retired fence builder and I would stain our fences with the same type of sprayer you purchased and it worked fine but with a different stain product. We would have a guy with a roller following the guy spraying. No matter how careful ,the product will run down the boards and our product would spray on a wider span than what your sprayer was pushing out of your spray tip.

Great product MIKE, just pump up the sprayer until it gets tight and keep it pumped up tight. This is stain and not water so it takes a lot of pressure to make it spray!! I know it is thin but not as thin as water. I installed a tire air valve in my tanks and use my air compressor to pressure up all my spray bottles. Works great!!! Try it.

How is it holding up? I just had a contractor apply this to my deck, it seems a little slick on the deck boards, the railing sucked it up right away. After watching him I regret paying someone to do it, but the fella needed the work and I'm lucky enough to be working so I'm glad I could help someone and get to learn something too, I will be adding the annual or hopefully biannual applications.

Yes you are getting better at the selection. Yes buy the thin natural tones, the will soak in better. You may have to thin the stain,to spray. I thin mine when i do. That roller is doing a good job.

Mike, I once painted a house for my cousin and he had an old cellar house he wanted painted also. The cellar house siding was old rough lumber that hadn't been painted in about 30 years. I tried using a brush and a roller and it was going to take a lot of paint and a lot of time to do a small building. I bought a Wagner power sprayer and it did a fantastic job. I still have it and love it, especially for rough cut lumber. It doesn't atomize the paint so bad that you get all that over spray like an air sprayer. You get a little but not too bad. They are well worth the cost. It will work on thin stain or a good thick latex.

I have stained my white pine log cabin several times over the last 18 years. I tried an airless sprayer that pulls from the can of stain directly but I still had to back brush to work the stain in then I had to clean the sprayer which takes a while. No time saved at all. I now use only a 4" brush right out of the can. A Purdy staining brush works best. Cheaper brushes do not hold enough stain or clean up as well so they are too much work. I enjoy your channel and look forward to your next projects.

Hi mike i have used a wagner sprayer for staining fences however you first have to adjust the fan nozel to a wide spray and don't get too close or it will run. And there will be times when you will have a run and then follow up with a roller. In side the shed it would be most helpful.Injoy staining and Have A Day.

Just had our new cedar fence stained. Fence guy sprayed 2/3 and his wife followed with a brush. One side we couldn't spray because neighbor has a truck and trailer right behind the fence. I ended up rolling stain myself and I think my side looks richer/deeper in color than the sprayed parts. Took a bit more time, but I'm happy with the outcome.

As someone how has done many stainings of decks for customers, I found this product to be the best yet. I chose to use the roller method to be the best and use a medium-size brush to stain the sides of the boards to really make a nice finish. This product is oil-based and will beat all other products oil or water-based. I do work for many very off customers who expect perfection and long-lasting products. Spraying does not give as good of results and the overspray creates more work and clean up.

Hey M&M, good morning. Finally a question I can answer, what me and my crew (2 guys) have always done is use a 9" long nap roller cover on a full size frame with a four or six ft. pole ( adjustable is best ) working out of a five gallon bucket with a roller screen, apply as much as the wood wants and then back brush to work it in always keeping a wet edge. Hope that helps! Love the look that people are talking about!😂😂✌🏻️

Did my house(cedar shingles), deck and posts using a roller. Applied from the bottom up, as the stain came out of the wet roller it was pushed up the wood. I thought it worked very well.
I have also used an airless pressure sprayer, which worked well, but I don't think it put as much stain into the wood.

I think the color is fantastic. Not sure what is up with your tips on the sprayer, but my sprayer has only one tip, and it is adjustable. Screwing it out, it sprays a stream like yours, but the more you tighten it up, it sprays a mist, which is what I think you need for the application you are looking for.

Used Ready Seal on a 110' of fencing built with 6' white cedar panels. Wife and I brushed it on each panel, front and back, before mounting them to the posts. The 5 gal size was just enough, and the results looked fantastic. I'll try a sprayer in a few years (hoping 4-5) when it needs another application, as it's pretty thin, and should spray fine.

Well too late maybe for this time. But for in the future I highly recommend using a stain pad. They have them on Amazon shur-line 9 inch pad with handle $9.05. I got mine from Lowes. I stained my deck and fence this past fall. After having a deck for 30+ years and a wood fence for 17 years. And many hours staining and using different apllication methods. I can say these pads are the only way to go. Fast no mess no waste. Try them you will LOVE them! I promise. Rough wood will tear them fairly easy. I just learned to use less pressure on those boards that were rough. So worth the money.

Good morning Mike Melissa and the chain gang👍👍. When you clean out the sprayer you might try putting in a gallon of water then pumping your pressure up MORE and see if it works better? Don’t try thinning it, just ruins the sealant and the sprayer. Hope you can get it figured out, it is a big time and energy saver. It’s looking really good, both projects. Uncle Hunter is teaching Ty really good, 👍👍. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.

I have a 63 ft handicap ramp for my wife. I waited a year to stain because of the treated wood. I used a 4 inch brush for the whole ramp. My father was a carpenter and he always said a brush is the best for working the stain into the wood. I think a roller with a thicker nap and they have brushes made for stain as well. Not sold on a paint sprayer for a solution.

I've used a hand pump sprayer, Wagner power sprayer, and roller/brush method for apply fence stain. The hand pump sprayer did not work that well. Using a lower price point Wagner sprayer, worked quite well and the stain lasted just as long as the roller/brush method. I used Olympic stain (thin type, not the semi-solid) in all of my applications. I got about 5 years out of the stain before it faded enough to need a pressure wash and re-stain.

Roller Tip.....I’ve allows used a handle extension on my roller regardless of the job. Usually a sawed off broom stick normally 18” to 24” long, or even 36”. It Provides leverage and additional distance overhead and below. Plus saves bending over each time you apply more stain / paint to the roller.

Over here in Kent in the UK we have barns that are very very old because they were painted with a black tar. With that in mind, I decided to experiment with Creosote (Creocote) mixed 60/40 with old Diesel sump oil. (Creosote comes in light and dark only!) Choosing the light one, I painted my soft wood shed, doors and garden gates. 15 years later, during the lockdown, I've just had to do then again. The wood was not rotten at all after all that time. I have a large cedar workshop that I painted with creosote just about 4 years ago, and it needs doing again already. Problem is, it does come up very rustic, but also very black when mixed with old sump oil, and the part my wife doesn't like is that it will still blacken your hand when you touch it 15 years later. But if you only want to paint every 15 years, give it a go. Old oil is free, and 5litres of creosote is as cheap as £5. That's about 3 dollars in foreign money. Stay safe all of you and keep them videos coming!

I have done the dance with cheap sprayer too. I found a flat brush, pad meant for decks, on extending pole with paint tray is best for me. Fastest, even, apply with best reach.

Mike - I have to agree with others who commented on the look that crossed Melissa's face when you talked about the possibility of a DeWalt cordless sprayer. Melissa I don't think you'd make it as a poker player. An airless sprayer would give you the ability to coat things evenly, but it will put down less product per sweep, which would mean paint, let dry, then another coat. The airless would also reduce any runs that happen on a vertical surface. As I've said before, free advice is sometimes worth exactly what you paid for it. Great video. Will be watching to see how the staining goes at the mini-cabin. Blessings to you, Melissa, and your family. Hi to the Hunt man. Spicy chicken - Yum!

The stain looks great Mike. I do think a power sprayer is worth the investment however and will make that job really go quickly. You have better things to do. Quote of the day!

I like using a roller. It pushes the product into the wood better. Use the pump sprayer for hard to reach places. Pump sprayer doesn’t have enough pressure though. Great color choice!

I used a pump sprayer for my fence, worked VERY well. It was Olympic stain, lasted 6 years now, no re-apply, yet.On the deck as well, but where there is foot traffic , needs re-applied every year , as you might think .

Mike, I have a Log home and I have to restain every 6 years. That pump sprayer should have a wide range nozzle in there. Like a fan Best way to do it is going from bottom to top and then you back brush the stain in. Try that.

Maybe DeWalt has one! You cannot script that response...Absolutely love the video. Thank you for sharing that.
Hire a pro to come in. Take him a half hour.. Sprayer drives that stuff in. Make yourself a new friend in the process... Supports the little guys.. No down side to it..

We used Ready Seal on our new deck, applied with a roller and a brush. You made the best pick with this product - Well done!

Mike last year we had our deck done by a professional painter and he used a roller to apply. He only uses Benjamin Moore Arber Coat for exterior stains. He said it's the best out there.

Applied 20 gallons of stain last year and used a power sprayer followed by a roller. Works best with two people. Absolutely is the best way to go. Fastest and most complete coverage. Able to apply more gallons per minute than other methods.

Hey Morgans....ready seal is a great product. Not cheap, but what is? I have used it on cedar fencing applied with a Harbour freight airless paint sprayer. Goes on very fast but takes two people....one spraying, the other following behind with brush. You and Melissa could do the whole shed inside and out in a morning. Lasts for years. Mine was applied 4 years ago and not repeated yet in Oklahoma sun.

The hand pump sprayer didn't have enough pressure in it to do the job right .the stain looks great. What was the length of the knap on the roller that does make a difference when applying product.

Hi Mike, I have used pump sprayers staining a lot and they have always worked week for me. Looked to me like the nozzles were stopped up or just weren't metered correctly and all you were greeting was a stream and not a spray. I also have a Wagner spray system but only use it for painting. Good luck and I do like the color and the way it looks.

It seemed like the sprayer wasn't pressurized enough or that maybe the hose/nozzle had a small clog. Just didn't seem to be atomized enough to get a wide fan spray. Love the color!!!

I tried a pump sprayer many years ago on our deck. Ended up using brushes and a roller on a pole. Have stayed with this method since. Good luck.

A roller for stain/paint is best. My experience is that an expensive airless will speed the process. You have to have experience and still it will occasionally run. So a brush is needed some also. A roller will give you what you want. A brush will catch those places a roller can't. It does look good. The color, I like also. Thank you for sharing. The family is a great team. Ty is getting some good overseer instruction from Hunter. Your whole family is the greatest. Keep us dazzled and unfrazzled as we rebuild our Country bro. You and Melissa make an exceptional team. Blessings to you on the homefront. I'm really missing those tractors....🤔 hey sitting in my wheelchair with a great cup of coffee 🍵...☝💪🇺🇸🙏👉...

I love the Morgans. I used to use a sprayer like you tried and it worked just fine. It was a garden sprayer but had to keep it pumped up. Also it was an adjustable tip. Not a change out.

Greetings from No VT - Mike, Great to see that you have adult supervision (Melissa) and have the big guy (Ty) keeping the crew motivated. He is such a lucky guy to have you all as family! I have had good luck with a 6" brush in one hand and a smooth nap roller in the other hand for staining flat surfaces. I have not had good luck with sprayers on vertical surfaces.

Did my house siding and my cedar fence with 3 - 4 inch brush. You do need to work the stain into the wood. For stain though would use high volume-low pressure sprayer . Will be of good use for the other buildings you plan Just my opinion

Spraying is definitely the way to go. Go rent a sprayer electric sprayer, you can adjust the pressure to get the right penetration. Might have to have someone go behind you. We put two coats on our 30 x40 garage in about 7.5 hours. The rented sprayer will hold 5 gallons of stain. It lasted for 8 years before we had to do it again. The exterior is T111, don’t know if that would make a difference.
