Respect yourself no matter if you just got your CDL!!! 1)Stop accepting and chasing per mile pay. 2)Take a few minutes and do the simple math you should get compensated for all the hrs you are on duty and yes they are local companies that pay overtime plus benefits and they are are Monday-Friday. 3)Over the road 2 to 3 weeks ...again do your math how much will it cost you for such an expedition. 4)understand tha you could easily get trapped for months or years working and chasing real money with Dog shit trucking companies. 5)think how much responsibility implies to hold a CDL it doesn't take a few days and couple of dollars to get it. You should act as a professional Class A commercial operator(not a driver)A driver delivers my pizza or Chinese food. Spend your time and resources in networking if you are not talking to a least 3 successful Comercial Class A holders you your going in blind.
Been trucking for almost 4 years now. Starting off, I was making $0.32cpm with my first company, was averaging 1900 miles each week and was home almost every weekend. At my current company, I'm currently at $0.42cpm, 2500 miles every week on average and my home time is usually for every 3 days I'm out, i can manage 1 day at home. I'm typically out for 6-8 days so I frequently get 2 or 3 full days at home before going back out. But my company is super relaxed and as long as you average 10k miles each month, you retain your benefits and can essentially have unlimited home time. I frequently surpass that average and last month, i was able to take nearly half of August off 😎
just after 2 years you should AT LEAST be making 55cpm. i know its NOT ALL about the money. Maybe you are happy & satisfied with your company, your pay, & home time. 42cpm is very low for your experience, maybe try getting the tanker & hazmat endorsements; you will almost double your pay.
@@jpw7598 I'm happy where I am now. Pay not be top tier but the respect and home time I get make up for it. It's not always about the money; I'd rather make $40k/yr and get the home time I want and the respect I deserve than make $100k+ and never be home or treated like garbage
@@jpw7598 i also drive for a small/midsize company so that probably doesn't help with the lower side of pay. I did just get another penny raise so that's good. After 5 years, i get another 5 cent raise so I'll easily be at $0.48cpm. It works for me for the time being just because of all the other benefits i get with this company. And it is only temporary cuz I'm going back to the military soon

I have driven for multiple trucking companies in my 30yrs of driving I now work for a ltl line haul company working nights only drop and hook 5 nights a week off weekends very good money best move I have made in my career
Great video!! Another thing is if you get all your endorsements look for companies that have the word environmental in their name, usually those jobs are Monday thru Friday with great hourly pay even if it’s regional
@@MehulP30 sure, companies like clean harbors, safety kleen, veolia, world oil, patriot environmental, triumvirate environmental, Ingenium, RTS, stericycle, ACT environmental, tri state motor transport. These are just a few of the companies I know of, i know there’s alot more, basically these companies pick up used chemicals from factories to bodyshops to mechanic shops, or transport chemicals from one facility to another,
Right off the bat, the majority of new driver's are coming from previous occupation's that envolved a whole different mind set. OTR is not anything like an hourly paid job. An hourly paid person get's the same wage every pay day when based on the same number of 40 hour's a week. A OTR gets paid based entirely on the number of miles which are not the miles based on the actual path the truck has to go. For instance, a detour can take one some 50 miles out of the way, those fifty miles are not paid. The additional time it takes can make one late, and that's a no no also.
I'm glad I found this video! I am planning on becoming a new otr driver within the next two months. I've been a facility maintenance technician for the past 15 years and my current bring home pay is around $2000 a month. I need to get into something that pays better and I think trucking will be a good fit for me.
The best thing to do is hook up with a UNION trucking company. I drove 25 yrs.with a union company (ABF) and the pay is better than any non-union place in the country today. Please let me know how things are going when you start. Thanks.
Contact Yellow (YRC), ABF Freight, or UPS. Right now both ABF Freight and Yellow are offering driver development programs. That means you need your CDL A permit to apply. I also suggest getting your endorsements as well. Good luck!
I start cdl school Nov 28th thru Chesapeake college here in MD my training is completely covered thru the states Workforce scholarship program So I will not owe anything once training is done also will be working while in school so will be able to shop new job offers thoroughly..thank you for all your content and info .

Prime inc is the only starter company that pays percentage (for lease drivers) and in my personal opinion is the best of the mega carriers. They are very transparent and the pay for the lease drivers is 72%. Ya you can make more as an owner op but starting out its a good jumping off point
Once your manager knows you and you stick with it after a year 2500-2800 miles average should be expected. Just 2 months ago I only got 6412 miles that month. Turned out the planner who gave me the good enough loads took a month off. So yeah it varies

(I'll chime in to respond in case noones else wants to) I'm brand new to all this, so I don't know anything for sure. But from the little I know so far, ... it would seem to me ... If something were to "happen" at Home / something you would consider a family EMERGENCY ... From what I can tell 2 things would be likely: one would have to Pay your own way back home, and 2, it is likely that the Company you're driving for would be upset=| Because.. all of a sudden one of their Truck Drivers is just bailing off an assignment, in motion? ..... If you atleast finish the route you're on, I think maybe you can decline to take the next job$ offers. Again, this is not official information, more coming from common sense on this one. ~but hope that helps. =]
Can you talk about engine cooldown time and preventative things you did to keep your engine lasting so long? Also have you ever had the engine over heat or head cracking? Thanks

what im understanding here is, truck companies wont allow a weekend driver, because i cant do week drives cause im in the army, and i want a second job and i love driving trucks, hence why im an 88M (Truck driver) however, i dont get to really do my job considering where im stationed

Tbh I just dived in head first. Ended up being OTR flatbed with Roehl even though I wanted to be regional. I wanted to be flatbed but they didn’t have a regional flatbed fleet for the east coast. Got stuck in a 1 year contract (or pay 7k). And after 3 months training I started out making $400-$600 per week. I wanted to quit so bad because the amount of work/responsibility/time/stress is outrageous compared to that pay. I’m making more now after getting a 3cpm raise and I’m also just getting a lot faster at the job since I’ve been solo 4 months now. Now I’m averaging $650-850 per week. That’s better but still not even close to what I think would make this worth it. I’ve heard of new guys making $1000-$1500 per week at other companies. I understand as a newbie that I’ve got to put my time in and get experience to make the big bucks but that doesn’t mean I don’t got bills to pay. If the pay doesn’t work it doesn’t work. Personally, I’m just gonna finish my contract then move on. Just a heads up to anyone looking. You’re really gonna have to do some research if you wanna make that good money out of the gate. And beware of the lies. I was told 70k first year. I found out after signing that you “could” “potentially” make that much if you only go home like once every 3 months and run hard doing about 2500 miles per week. Personally, I do the minimum time which is 11 days out 3 days home. It’s not worth it to me to be out for months. And I’m getting faster now but at first I was only hitting about 1500 miles per week since I was still learning (tarping took me hours). So I’m on track to make about 40k first year.
If you learn nothing else, remember, a recruiter is a salesman for the company. Most recruiters get paid a bonus for every ass they put in a truck. Most of them will out right lie to you just to sell you that job. Above all, do your own research. Talk to multiple drivers working for the company you're interested in, Google has thousands of trucking company reviews, you cant learn too much.
I am about to start school (private school on my own dime) in 1 week and excited. Been watching this channel for a few months and can’t express enough how much I’ve learned so far from your videos. Makes me feel more confident so a HUGE thank you for all you’ve done! One thing I’d like to know more about is handling freight. Do drivers typically not touch freight or is it common to help load and unload the truck. Reason I ask is I know companies like “Home Hardware” in Canada, drivers unload freight when dropping off at the store. Just not sure if this is specific to a very small number of companies or common with most. Thank you!!!
First off good luck! Depends on who you work for but most jobs are no touch freight. On the other hand most local jobs you definitely handle the freight.

I just gave my notice to leave a collections position at the largest 3PL in the US, to become a truck driver. I'm going with a smaller, private company which has seemed incredibly transparent throughout the process, and I'm excited to get out on the road soon!
So true. Take your time and find the right company from the start. Find local work; OTR is no good. A lot of OTR companies are losing money having vehicles sitting on the lot. Don't be a sucka; drive local and get paid.

I been watching this channel for a while I applied with Schneider in Dallas because that’s were I live for my CDL training I got approved they said they start drivers at 43 cpm… I ended up finding a smaller company that train on manual trucks and start 52 cent per mile so I call that a win. You can get screwed over easy by a recruiter lol.
Mega carriers such as Schneider are always going to use the "you're a new driver" excuse to pay you less. My recruiter told .41CPM since I'm new right out of CDL school but I bet I applied to a local position I'll get like $25+ hourly and make more money than with Schneider
That’s why me living in Omaha am looking to Grand Island Express s they know their freight lanes are mainly Northeast along 1-80 I should be about to get home time once a week. They have some south I wouldn’t mind hitting sometimes. I wanted local but it seems they’re hard to get without experience.
What about hourly pay... I am on parole and I can only haul regional. I just got my permit and I am offering a company where for the first year I will work for minimum wage... 3 things (1 is this lower wage idea a good one and (2. Is hourly pay good... for regional Parole says I have to be home every night. (3. I was told because I am on parole most companies will not hire me, is this true?
As w new truck driver you’ll learn allot in school and your trainer will cover all of the pay questions and during your 6 week training you’ll be on salary pay. Trust me as a brand new driver you’ll not have a conversation with a recruiter like this
So I have one good eye and I'm trying to get started I hear that the fscma has what is called the alternative vision standard so as long as I pass I'm good I'm also a right leg amputee do companies stop you from driving if I have to drive with my left foot I'm very good at it

With halvor lines out of suppior wi and i have never ben lied to im earning 1400 a week avarage as a flat bedder iv only ben out for 4 months in my own truck and im a milage worker but after my first year i can do percantage and my buddy thats ben there a year makes 1800 to 2k a week as a percantage worker halvor lines is a great company only 700 trucks so they arnt a maga company
If a recruiter is talking they are lying. Remember that. They’ll sing to high heavens about their company and make you feel like king of the world…2 months later and the same company won’t even respond to your messages.
Do you have any recommendations for Flatbed companies that hire out of the Northeast with no experience? I live in Maine and so far the only companies I found are Prime Inc and Melton Truck Lines. I'm debating rather or not I should go to Prime Inc for their training program or if i should get my CDL on my own then see if any other doors open up.

Hi 👋 any advice for a 56 year old With a Great drivers record & clean license that want to get into trucking ?? How many new rigs are stick vs.automatic i know how to drive a manual transmission hearing 18 speeds intimidating
Most manuals are 10 speed. Imagine going through the 5 speed pattern twice but once you are in 5th, you flip a switch and start over again in first. It isn't confusing for long but the clutch is different. I will say though that shifting is only a small part of the difficulty. There are many new skills you will need to learn. Just learning an automatic is the lazy route for people who don't take this seriously.
I would say yes as long as you're good with the physical activity. It can be labor intensive when tarping and stuff. It of course depends on your location but TMC is a good one and I know @TruckingwithTay recommends Maverick. I began my career as a flatbedder with Mercer which is an owner op company so I am not 100% sure about them but I've heard good things about both.
Question for all experienced truckers... I understand I will need to pay my dues at a mega carrier should I just choose the one with a terminal close to my home (within a couple hours)?

I run that miles but the truck was govern at 76MPH
1 day off 7 days out reminds me of Werner. They did that!! Werner made us do 34 hrs on the road. OTR!

If you learn nothing else, remember, a recruiter is a salesman for the company. Most recruiters get paid a bonus for every ass they put in a truck. Most of them will out right lie to you just to sell you that job. Above all, do your own research. Talk to multiple drivers working for the company you're interested in, Google has thousands of trucking company reviews, you cant learn too much.
I am about to start school (private school on my own dime) in 1 week and excited. Been watching this channel for a few months and can’t express enough how much I’ve learned so far from your videos. Makes me feel more confident so a HUGE thank you for all you’ve done! One thing I’d like to know more about is handling freight. Do drivers typically not touch freight or is it common to help load and unload the truck. Reason I ask is I know companies like “Home Hardware” in Canada, drivers unload freight when dropping off at the store. Just not sure if this is specific to a very small number of companies or common with most. Thank you!!!

Depends on who you work for but most jobs are no touch freight. On the other hand most local jobs you definitely handle the freight.

I just gave my notice to leave a collections position at the largest 3PL in the US, to become a truck driver. I'm going with a smaller, private company which has seemed incredibly transparent throughout the process, and I'm excited to get out on the road soon!

So true. Take your time and find the right company from the start. Find local work; OTR is no good. A lot of OTR companies are losing money having vehicles sitting on the lot. Don't be a sucka; drive local and get paid.

When I got my first truck I was averaging around 3200 a week
I been watching this channel for a while I applied with Schneider in Dallas because that’s were I live for my CDL training I got approved they said they start drivers at 43 cpm… I ended up finding a smaller company that train on manual trucks and start 52 cent per mile so I call that a win. You can get screwed over easy by a recruiter lol.
Mega carriers such as Schneider are always going to use the "you're a new driver" excuse to pay you less. My recruiter told .41CPM since I'm new right out of CDL school but I bet I applied to a local position I'll get like $25+ hourly and make more money than with Schneider

That’s why me living in Omaha am looking to Grand Island Express s they know their freight lanes are mainly Northeast along 1-80 I should be about to get home time once a week. They have some south I wouldn’t mind hitting sometimes. I wanted local but it seems they’re hard to get without experience.

What about hourly pay... I am on parole and I can only haul regional. I just got my permit and I am offering a company where for the first year I will work for minimum wage... 3 things (1 is this lower wage idea a good one and (2. Is hourly pay good... for regional Parole says I have to be home every night. (3. I was told because I am on parole most companies will not hire me, is this true?

As w new truck driver you’ll learn allot in school and your trainer will cover all of the pay questions and during your 6 week training you’ll be on salary pay. Trust me as a brand new driver you’ll not have a conversation with a recruiter like this

If a recruiter is talking they are lying. Remember that. They’ll sing to high heavens about their company and make you feel like king of the world…2 months later and the same company won’t even respond to your messages.

Do you have any recommendations for Flatbed companies that hire out of the Northeast with no experience? I live in Maine and so far the only companies I found are Prime Inc and Melton Truck Lines. I'm debating rather or not I should go to Prime Inc for their training program or if i should get my CDL on my own then see if any other doors open up.

Most manuals are 10 speed. Imagine going through the 5 speed pattern twice but once you are in 5th, you flip a switch and start over again in first. It isn't confusing for long but the clutch is different. I will say though that shifting is only a small part of the difficulty. There are many new skills you will need to learn. Just learning an automatic is the lazy route for people who don't take this seriously.

I would say yes as long as you're good with the physical activity. It can be labor intensive when tarping and stuff. It of course depends on your location but TMC is a good one and I know @TruckingwithTay recommends Maverick. I began my career as a flatbedder with Mercer which is an owner op company so I am not 100% sure about them but I've heard good things about both.
Question for all experienced truckers... I understand I will need to pay my dues at a mega carrier should I just choose the one with a terminal close to my home (within a couple hours)?
If you've gotta drive there to get to work every time...
