I was driving last night. And I was behind a truck driver that hit a parked straight truck on the highway going atleasy 100km+ it caught on fire and got destroyed. It was blazing. We managed to pull the 2 men out and called the police and fire trucks. It was around 4:30Am in a construction zone. As a truck driver myself it SHOOK ME to my core! Please be safe out there guys!

Ive been driving almost a year. Im a company driver for a small flatbed company in Texas. I made it to top pay in 5-6 months. I have no debt and Im happy!

I just started and I love it so far. It is not a job, it is in fact a lifestyle. The company you work for will make all the difference in the world. I simply love to drive and see new places and happen to get paid for it. Run with a company that treats you with respect and as a professional, no micromanaging. It will not feel like work if it’s a passion.
I drove for Landstar for 3.5 years, great company. And yes, for me it is a passion so it’s enjoyable hard work. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
I started driving for my dad 2 years ago. I work about the same amount of hours as I did at my last job, but I get paid about 2-3 times as much driving for him. In 2 years, I’m set to make to six figures. Trucking has provided me to provide for myself and family with ease. I couldn’t say that about my last job.

That’s because so many of them want to start off as owner-operators right off the bat. They need to put in the time, effort, (and yes!) research before “taking the plunge.” I drove as a company driver for 10 years before I bought my truck. I learned the ins and outs of the trucking industry first. I sought the knowledge and wisdom from several “old timers” and owner-ops who knew what they were doing. It served me well. And yes, I’ve had my struggles and challenges along the way as well. Who hasn’t? You just deal with them the best way that you can and keep going. Giving up is not an option.
After 24 years working for a foodservice distributor in their transportation department, I left and purchased my own truck. Two years later I just took delivery of my second truck and hired my first driver. I loved trucking!
I absolutely hate it. I've been driving and saving all my money. I'm about 4 months away from my goal of 50k. I'm getting dafuk away from trucking for good. Too much bs to deal with on a daily basis. Trucking is only good if you can come out on the road with 0 bills and save majority of your money
I've been a driver for 27 year's, I make 100k plus a year. Both my older boys went to college. Both are in their mid 20s and make twice what I make and work 75 time less than I do. I hate this narrative that college is pointless. Trucking is a great job. You can make good money. Also, don't blow smoke about working 1 day a month. 56% guys that go to land star fail. Trucking is hard, and you have to bust your ass. There is no need for BS.

I have been driving for 2 years and hate it. The dispatchers make the same at my company but work 8 hour days home every night for around 75k. This guy's mind set is why workers in all industries are paid like shit

Signed up for a get your CDL program as soon as I turned 21. Got my CDL back at the start of July and finished training mid August. Been OTR on my own since then and I love every second of it. Hoping to go owner op when I have the chance.
I haven’t failed, I’ve been doing it for 16 years. Over the road and local hauling fuel. I’m gonna be honest with you I’m looking for a career change. I will say it pays well. And provided me a good living.
I’m a month into my job as a truck driver. Only been two weeks out solo. I honestly hate it and regret getting my cdl. I didn’t pay a dime for my cdl either and am not locked in a contract. Pay isn’t even good either.

Wtf ever, I've had my CDL 4.5 years,I'm a company driver,no other industry asks you to put in minimum 12 hours a day,it's not healthy,it's not safe.I've sat at shippers/receivers 7-12 hours either waiting to pick up a load or be able to unload. Tired of the mentality of trucking,I regret getting my CDL, my advice is to 100% avoid this industry, it will wear you out.Put all the "positive " spins you want on it,it's a shit industry and shouldn't be presented otherwise.There are far more issues beyond just the hours, time passed away waiting on loads. Can't cover them all but I know what it's like being on the road and it sucks.
To assume people who dont like it failed is where all your credibility goes out the window. Some people just get tired of bad logistics, ahole troopers, lying companies, and bad management. Trucking is shitty. Regardless it is one of the best jobs you can do without a degree.
Goat! Went to school for IT 💻. I hated it! My uncle told my to get my cdl when I was 19 and I said no, imma go to school. I’m 23 now and I got my cdl permit and going to prime trucking! My starting pay was worse than unemployment, but less than 90 days later I got the transfer I wanted. You can believe or not believe, but to me you are just a person on a free app on my phone. My experience however is real....

I did it for 20 years. Made good money at the end. I got out of it because it takes away too much time out of your life plus the adverse effects on your health. Time has a greater value over money. Honestly I think the smart guys realize this early. The cupcakes are the ones that haven’t figured it out.
Was a mechanic for about 12 years. Automotive, Diesel, heavy equipment, small engines, all sorts of stuff. Recently decided to switch to trucking, transporting heavy equipment for the local CAT dealer. I’m starting at damn near what I was making turning wrenches. I've been a diesel mechanic for most my life. I'm 47 now, tired of dealing with breadcrumbs $$$ and ass****s, I'm in good shape but want to keep it that way. Turning wrenches is hard on your body. Just graduated CDL school got my test in a few days. 🤔 I'll be making less than I would in a shop, but guess we all have to start somewhere 🫤🤷♂️ 🤞

Love watching your videos. I am retiring from the Army after 20 years and will begin my next career as a truck driver because that is what I want to do because of the scenery changes every few minutes and the prospect of going somewhere new each trip.
About 30 years ago, I thought I wanted to be a truck driver, but the job has such incredible demands and so many serious responsibilities, such as how you can go to prison for killing somebody, that I cannot imagine how anyone would want to do it. The brutally long hours and generally low pay and long list of sacrifices and hardships. No job could be harder
A great thing about trucking is, you’re never too far from someone who has goals, or has already done what you want to accomplish. You don’t see that in every profession. So find and associate with them! Even as a company driver working local I’ve been able to do that. A guy I work with has his own truck, MC, and contract freight, plus further plans. So I pick his brain all the time.
I'm not a trucker. Went to college for veterinary science. Work at a veterinary diagnostic lab. I'm a female but think trucking is pretty interesting. I'm a terrible driver in a regular car. My car has every warning, back up camera and sensor so I dont get into an accident or hit something. Keep on doing what you love in life.
When I started as a company driver 5 years ago I was making $0.27 per mile now I'm and owner operator making 200k plus looking back of the hard work I've put in I'm proud to see where I've come from! Keep up the great content brother you and make cents have been great inspiration to me and many others!
I'd say after expenses that 200k is maybe 60k if you don't have major truck repairs and if you calculate the amount of time in the truck it is crap pay!
A whole lot of that might be down to how you treat yourself. For example, do you smoke? Do you take advantage of company medical benefits and see a doctor on your 34, and follow what they tell you? Do you eat right and exercise regularly, above and beyond what being a truck driver requires? Etc. It IS possible to be healthy in this profession.

Number one problem with becoming owner operator today is unreliable newer equipment. Number two the cost to own and operate a semi truck went up a lot over the last two decades, while the freight rates did not. Do you think a truck repair shop will do any work at half price? Never! Yet we truckers regularly do haul freight for cheap, despite being charged top dollar for fuel, tires, parts and repairs. I don't know any other business that operates like this.
I stated driving in 2004 and drove for 10 years (company driver). When my third kid was born I went off the road and went back to school. I got two AA degrees (web and Graphic Desing) and took a pay cut by over half (I made 30k a year the last 5 years and can’t get a better paying job without a bachelors or masters). I am now going back out on the road because 30k a year isn't cutting it (haven't been able to pay a dime on my college loans) and my kids are older, I am keeping the graphic design job, and ill be driving and I should bring in over 100k from doing both. I am kicking around the idea of buying a truck after a year back, I need a retirement plan, I'm almost 40 and don't have anything. its going to be hard work, but I refuse to get food stamps or anything and I have a family to support.

I been driving 24 years and making $110,000 a year and im home weekly. Trucking has given me and my family a good life, if drivers are not making good money, is because they're working for the wrong company or they're just being lazyyyyyy.
You've gotta pay your dues. I started in the 80s driving junk for $40k/yr. Now, I make well into the six figures... out 9 and home 5. That's a vacation every other week. Great equipment.. free insurance.. boss has my back. Paid my dues.
It's also about the kind of trucking you do. I wouldn't do any other job but drive my truck. But home and friends are also important. OTR isn't for me. But running in my home state is a perfect balance to enjoy the road, yet still have social interaction.
I gave over 3 years of my life to trucking that I will never get back. Missed 3 years of my kid growing up, lost most of my friends, and almost got divorced. The pay isn't worth living in a box and having your life controlled by some dipshit behind a desk. Imagine having to ask for permission to go home for a few days out of the month for a place you pay for lol.
I used to work at a steel tubing manufacturing plant and our turnover even back in 2002 was horrendous and the pay was actually pretty good $15 an hour but people wouldn’t last till lunch and they would already quit people just don’t wanna work hard anymore especially physically….
When I started trucking I went to a company run CDL school on 120k mile contract to work for them after. Which was fine, they were a pretty good company at the time. But from the beginning I had my eyes set on doing flatbed/step/drop deck like my grandpa. So I drove for them for a little over two years doing dry van and Reefer to develop some experience. I did my research, and joined up with a reputable family owned carrier that specializes in glass hauling on flatbed and drop decks. Just hit my 3 year mark with them, and things have been good. Now that I've saved up some money, I'm looking at going owner operator with this company. Still doing research, and waiting to see what sorta path this new Biden administration is gonna go down. But other than that, this life style fits me to a T. Young, single, no debts, and I've built myself a good reputation with the company and some of our customers. If I had to give anyone advice who were wanting to get into trucking, it's all effort, just like any other blue collar job. If you want to stand out and get preferential treatment, then you have to give it 110%. Keep your log book in order, keep your work space at customers clean, and for God sakes don't leave equipment behind with problems for the next guy. That's my biggest gripe with being a company driver right now, I'm frequently getting things fixed on trailers that other guys put off. Tires under inflated, various things that are broken, bent, or missing. Don't be that guy! Especially if you get into flatbed, drop deck, tanker, or anything with a lot of specialized equipment. Not everything can be fixed at a loves, TA, or Petro. I've lost loads before because the trailer I was told to grab for the load was screwed up, due to the last guy not saying anything. Our safety department has had quite a few 'conversations' with other drivers on my behalf because of it. There's nothing worse than getting hyped for a good load, swapping trailers, and only to realize something is screwed up due to the last guy hooked to it being to lazy to due his job properly. If it weren't for that I'd probably stay as a company driver. I'm very meticulous about keeping the things I have in good working order, and it irritates me when I see drivers out here who clearly don't give a damn about anything. If your gonna do a job, any job, do you best work and give it your all. Character, and reputation go a long ways in becoming successfull. Companies take notice of that as well. It's pretty easy for a company to look at your track record over a one or two year period, and see if you'll be a gem or a turd. Nobody wants to be a turd, so keep your reputation and your work ethics clean and shiny. Because bad habits and laziness have a way of coming to haunt you eventually.

The new entitlement mentality out there is great for people who do the basics right. If you have work ethic, piss clean, and show up on time then you're already head and shoulders above the competition.
There are owner operators that make money, there are those that think that they make money, but they don't, and there are those that outright don't make money.
I got my cdl 2yrs ago April 5th 2019. After bouncing around a few companies I bought a truck in September 2020 and leased on to Landstar. Now I average 3 to 4 grand/week take home when I'm out on the road.
In Europe, almost EVERY truck driver say: Don't be fool, don't be a truck driver, you are too young, you are ruining your life etc etc. I always ask ... Why are u driving if it is that bad?! They can't give me an appropriate answer . Ok, I know, I a dont spend every night at home, sometimes Im on the road from Monday to Friday, working hours are much longer, but let me say that.. When i worked 8 hours a day, i got home, and thinking what should I do to have more money, I just played computer, did nothing. Now even if I work 12-15 hours a day my salary is 4x than before, can afford lot of things, spending more useful time with my family or friends, so this is not that bad. . .

But people change. My heart has always been to trucks. I thought I'll be an IT person, but I got to be a truck driver. It's what I really want.

Very good points I believe it's how you look at things. You can fail at any job with the wrong mindset but I agree with you on the point of nobody owes you anything. I have been working since 16 and when I read a lot of reviews on truck driving companies, I believe it's because that person's expectation where to high especially just starting to drive. Start with the starter company and move on to a different company to make the career. That is what I"m planning to do once I get everything settled back down, I had started with PTL and they have called me to come back. I believe I will go back to PTL and get at least 1-2 yrs of driving experience then move on to another company but honestly thinking outside of the box has helped me out and hard work always pays off. I was at a trucking school 15 years ago to become a trucker, but I had also given my name to work in a correctional facility and they offered me something I couldn't refuse, but trucking still is in the back of my mind. Been contemplating getting into trucking. Something I’ve been studying and looking into for quite a while. I’ve also watched a lot of videos. I’ve disregarded all the negativity. I’m not afraid of hard work. I just want a little freedom and be able to enjoy what I’m doing. I’d also like to eventually own my own truck once I’ve put in my time and paid my dues. As I’ve been closing in on a decision. This video fired me up! I’m now determined that I’m going to do this trucking life! Keep the good content coming! Though most believe there are pros and cons to everything... that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t share the positives of trucking! Other truckers, those in training or individuals thinking of getting into trucking do not need to be discouraged from from making the leap due to all these sour people out here putting out negative videos about trucking. Right on, especially with this younger generation. Nobody wants to start at the bottom and work their way up anymore. They want to instantly start off with a 6 figure salary, and sure, that would be nice, but it isn’t realistic. I’ve been trucking for 27 years now, and Lord knows I’ve paid my dues. Now I’m an owner-op (for 16 years now) leased on to a great company and have an awesome dedicated route. I truly love what I do. It didn’t happen overnight, but I was patient and willing to work hard. In fact, I STILL work hard, but it’s enjoyable hard work. Great video, Brian! 👍
I am an engineer considering switching careers to truck driving. Right out of the gate, I made $70k starting out and make $80k a year now. I have no student loan debt. This all sounds great, but I feel my personality does not mesh well in this field. Engineering typically requires extensive teamwork and leadership abilities that I do not have. I am not much of an innovator. Truck driving appeals to me (from the outside at least) because of the solitary nature. I don't plan on ever having a family but who knows what could happen I guess. I guess I am a bit concerned about the dietary aspect of the job, having to eat at truck stops all the time, etc.
My 1st yr in trucking I made $50 thousand & just finished my 2nd yr & made $70 thousand in the 2nd & that is being a company driver! So I teach people the $ is there to b made u just gotta want it!
I'll be putting my life in a storage unit and hitting the road as an OTR driver in about 8 weeks. I'm single with no responsibilities other than myself. I'm taking the opportunity to rack up as much experience as I can as quickly as possible. My uncles recommended that I wait until I can buy a truck out right to put myself in the best situation possible as an owner operator. I'm taking their advice to heart. I sometimes get free food and drinks from friendly waitresses. You can own your own truck/business. Work when you want, take off when you want. Haul cool and interesting loads to strange interesting places. No one looks over my shoulder, I'm a solo driver. I stop when I want. I eat when and where I want. I sleep when and where I want. As long as I make my pick ups and deliveries on schedule, no one bothers me. It has been this way since I started driving truck back in 1998. It was the same way when my dad drove truck for 45 years. I’ve been trucking for 33 years now. I’ve always worked for small companies and the last 20 years I’ve been driving a concrete mixer for a small company. I'm 22. I've been driving for a year now amd yes it is hard. Both my kids and wife miss me when I'm gone but I couldn't do something else. I'm a second generation driver. Pay isn't the best but it's definitely getting better as time goes on. I'm really pushing to buy my first truck by the end of this year if not next year

I’ve always said “Trucking has to be IN you.” If it’s not, trucking is the wrong career for you. The pay IS miserable. You ARE gone from home, friends, family. You DO perform lots of work you don’t get paid for. It just ain’t for everyone.
Miserable pay is kind of relative to what one is coming from, and highly dependent on what they put into trucking. Even my first trucking job was hands down the best money I’d ever made to that point. Solidly middle-class even though I worked the hours for it. The income *potential* in trucking is basically unlimited. Those big chrome stacks don’t grow on trees.
@@mr.butterworth In Europe you scale out fast. As an employee it's max +-15 euro an hour before taxes.. As o/o more, but competition is heavy. Many drivers and companies from eastern Europe work for less. A hard working trucker gets 3500 after taxes Otr at best. Flatbed, hazmat often doesn't pay extra. Imagine that Mexicans could take all the trucking jobs if they would like. That's what's happening in Europe...
The pay is miserable for those who are used to well paying jobs but if you've only ever worked a minimum wage job such as what I'm working right now, it's a huge step up.
Am thirty one this year and probably won’t have my full drivers license till am 34 and then I wanna get my class one it’s always been a dream to just be on the road for work. But I’ve struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction and it’s been my main priority every day just to get that dealt with and I feel that plays a big role in just the responsibility of being a truck driver to right, gotta have a good head on your shoulders, so yeah it being a lonely job means to like have a counsellor or someone to talk to you know that shits important that your mental health is in check driving it should be a video you should talk about to. had lots of time to think about doing this career. But when I think of doing other things I just really want to experience being a truck driver

I was driving last night. And I was behind a truck driver that hit a parked straight truck on the highway going atleasy 100km+ it caught on fire and got destroyed. It was blazing. We managed to pull the 2 men out and called the police and fire trucks. It was around 4:30Am in a construction zone.
As a truck driver myself it SHOOK ME to my core!

It's dangerous to park on the side of a highway. If you have to, better stay away of the vehicle if the weather allows it.

I just started and I love it so far. It is not a job, it is in fact a lifestyle. The company you work for will make all the difference in the world. I simply love to drive and see new places and happen to get paid for it. Run with a company that treats you with respect and as a professional, no micromanaging. It will not feel like work if it’s a passion.

I started driving for my dad 2 years ago. I work about the same amount of hours as I did at my last job, but I get paid about 2-3 times as much driving for him. In 2 years, I’m set to make to six figures. Trucking has provided me to provide for myself and family with ease. I couldn’t say that about my last job.

That’s because so many of them want to start off as owner-operators right off the bat. They need to put in the time, effort, (and yes!) research before “taking the plunge.” I drove as a company driver for 10 years before I bought my truck. I learned the ins and outs of the trucking industry first. I sought the knowledge and wisdom from several “old timers” and owner-ops who knew what they were doing. It served me well. And yes, I’ve had my struggles and challenges along the way as well. Who hasn’t? You just deal with them the best way that you can and keep going. Giving up is not an option.

After 24 years working for a foodservice distributor in their transportation department, I left and purchased my own truck. Two years later I just took delivery of my second truck and hired my first driver. I loved trucking!

I've been a driver for 27 year's, I make 100k plus a year. Both my older boys went to college. Both are in their mid 20s and make twice what I make and work 75 time less than I do. I hate this narrative that college is pointless. Trucking is a great job. You can make good money. Also, don't blow smoke about working 1 day a month. 56% guys that go to land star fail. Trucking is hard, and you have to bust your ass. There is no need for BS.

I have been driving for 2 years and hate it. The dispatchers make the same at my company but work 8 hour days home every night for around 75k. This guy's mind set is why workers in all industries are paid like shit

I’m a month into my job as a truck driver. Only been two weeks out solo. I honestly hate it and regret getting my cdl. I didn’t pay a dime for my cdl either and am not locked in a contract. Pay isn’t even good either.
Just gotta change companies as soon as that contract is up. There’s good ones out there!

It's Why I Stayed In Trucking For Over 24 Years Because I Couldn't Make As Much Money In Anything Else I Was Interested In- One Being A Graphic Designer And Another A Helicopter Pilot. The High Cost Of Schooling And The Uncertaintity And Low Income In Those Fields Afterwards Just Didn't Make Sense.

Wtf ever, I've had my CDL 4.5 years,I'm a company driver,no other industry asks you to put in minimum 12 hours a day,it's not healthy,it's not safe.I've sat at shippers/receivers 7-12 hours either waiting to pick up a load or be able to unload. Tired of the mentality of trucking,I regret getting my CDL, my advice is to 100% avoid this industry, it will wear you out.Put all the "positive " spins you want on it,it's a shit industry and shouldn't be presented otherwise.There are far more issues beyond just the hours, time passed away waiting on loads. Can't cover them all but I know what it's like being on the road and it sucks.

@@dudeskidude8376 I can only tell you MY experience. A lot of people told me discouraging things when I was new and God set it up where I didn't experience any of that. My starting pay was worse than unemployment, but less than 90 days later I got the transfer I wanted.

I did it for 20 years. Made good money at the end. I got out of it because it takes away too much time out of your life plus the adverse effects on your health. Time has a greater value over money. Honestly I think the smart guys realize this early. The cupcakes are the ones that haven’t figured it out.
Was a mechanic for about 12 years. Automotive, Diesel, heavy equipment, small engines, all sorts of stuff. Recently decided to switch to trucking, transporting heavy equipment for the local CAT dealer. I’m starting at damn near what I was making turning wrenches. I've been a diesel mechanic for most my life. I'm 47 now, tired of dealing with breadcrumbs $$$ and ass****s, I'm in good shape but want to keep it that way. Turning wrenches is hard on your body. Just graduated CDL school got my test in a few days. 🤔 I'll be making less than I would in a shop, but guess we all have to start somewhere 🫤🤷♂️ 🤞

Love watching your videos. I am retiring from the Army after 20 years and will begin my next career as a truck driver because that is what I want to do because of the scenery changes every few minutes and the prospect of going somewhere new each trip.

About 30 years ago, I thought I wanted to be a truck driver, but the job has such incredible demands and so many serious responsibilities, such as how you can go to prison for killing somebody, that I cannot imagine how anyone would want to do it. The brutally long hours and generally low pay and long list of sacrifices and hardships. No job could be harder
A great thing about trucking is, you’re never too far from someone who has goals, or has already done what you want to accomplish. You don’t see that in every profession. So find and associate with them!
Even as a company driver working local I’ve been able to do that. A guy I work with has his own truck, MC, and contract freight, plus further plans. So I pick his brain all the time.

I'm not a trucker. Went to college for veterinary science. Work at a veterinary diagnostic lab. I'm a female but think trucking is pretty interesting. I'm a terrible driver in a regular car. My car has every warning, back up camera and sensor so I dont get into an accident or hit something.

When I started as a company driver 5 years ago I was making $0.27 per mile now I'm and owner operator making 200k plus looking back of the hard work I've put in I'm proud to see where I've come from! A whole lot of that might be down to how you treat yourself. For example, do you smoke? Do you take advantage of company medical benefits and see a doctor on your 34, and follow what they tell you? Do you eat right and exercise regularly, above and beyond what being a truck driver requires? Etc. It IS possible to be healthy in this profession.

Number one problem with becoming owner operator today is unreliable newer equipment. Number two the cost to own and operate a semi truck went up a lot over the last two decades, while the freight rates did not.
Do you think a truck repair shop will do any work at half price? Never! Yet we truckers regularly do haul freight for cheap, despite being charged top dollar for fuel, tires, parts and repairs. I don't know any other business that operates like this.

I stated driving in 2004 and drove for 10 years (company driver). When my third kid was born I went off the road and went back to school. I got two AA degrees (web and Graphic Desing) and took a pay cut by over half (I made 30k a year the last 5 years and can’t get a better paying job without a bachelors or masters). I am now going back out on the road because 30k a year isn't cutting it (haven't been able to pay a dime on my college loans) and my kids are older, I am keeping the graphic design job, and ill be driving and I should bring in over 100k from doing both. I am kicking around the idea of buying a truck after a year back, I need a retirement plan, I'm almost 40 and don't have anything. its going to be hard work, but I refuse to get food stamps or anything and I have a family to support.

It's also about the kind of trucking you do. I wouldn't do any other job but drive my truck. But home and friends are also important. OTR isn't for me. But running in my home state is a perfect balance to enjoy the road, yet still have social interaction.
I gave over 3 years of my life to trucking that I will never get back. Missed 3 years of my kid growing up, lost most of my friends, and almost got divorced. The pay isn't worth living in a box and having your life controlled by some dipshit behind a desk. Imagine having to ask for permission to go home for a few days out of the month for a place you pay for lol.

I used to work at a steel tubing manufacturing plant and our turnover even back in 2002 was horrendous and the pay was actually pretty good $15 an hour but people wouldn’t last till lunch and they would already quit people just don’t wanna work hard anymore especially physically….
When I started trucking I went to a company run CDL school on 120k mile contract to work for them after. Which was fine, they were a pretty good company at the time. But from the beginning I had my eyes set on doing flatbed/step/drop deck like my grandpa. So I drove for them for a little over two years doing dry van and Reefer to develop some experience. I did my research, and joined up with a reputable family owned carrier that specializes in glass hauling on flatbed and drop decks. Just hit my 3 year mark with them, and things have been good.
Now that I've saved up some money, I'm looking at going owner operator with this company. Still doing research, and waiting to see what sorta path this new Biden administration is gonna go down. But other than that, this life style fits me to a T. Young, single, no debts, and I've built myself a good reputation with the company and some of our customers.
If I had to give anyone advice who were wanting to get into trucking, it's all effort, just like any other blue collar job. If you want to stand out and get preferential treatment, then you have to give it 110%. Keep your log book in order, keep your work space at customers clean, and for God sakes don't leave equipment behind with problems for the next guy. That's my biggest gripe with being a company driver right now, I'm frequently getting things fixed on trailers that other guys put off. Tires under inflated, various things that are broken, bent, or missing. Don't be that guy! Especially if you get into flatbed, drop deck, tanker, or anything with a lot of specialized equipment. Not everything can be fixed at a loves, TA, or Petro. I've lost loads before because the trailer I was told to grab for the load was screwed up, due to the last guy not saying anything. Our safety department has had quite a few 'conversations' with other drivers on my behalf because of it. There's nothing worse than getting hyped for a good load, swapping trailers, and only to realize something is screwed up due to the last guy hooked to it being to lazy to due his job properly. If it weren't for that I'd probably stay as a company driver. I'm very meticulous about keeping the things I have in good working order, and it irritates me when I see drivers out here who clearly don't give a damn about anything.
If your gonna do a job, any job, do you best work and give it your all. Character, and reputation go a long ways in becoming successfull. Companies take notice of that as well. It's pretty easy for a company to look at your track record over a one or two year period, and see if you'll be a gem or a turd. Nobody wants to be a turd, so keep your reputation and your work ethics clean and shiny. Because bad habits and laziness have a way of coming to haunt you eventually.
I did 47 years as an otr driver as an owner operator it had good and bad times it is a really hard life. 😕

There are owner operators that make money, there are those that think that they make money, but they don't, and there are those that outright don't make money.
I got my cdl 2yrs ago April 5th 2019. After bouncing around a few companies I bought a truck in September 2020 and leased on to Landstar. Now I average 3 to 4 grand/week take home when I'm out on the road.
I would wonder how much the money would go to gas prices now lol 1000 a fill up.
In Europe, almost EVERY truck driver say: Don't be fool, don't be a truck driver, you are too young, you are ruining your life etc etc. I always ask ... Why are u driving if it is that bad?! They can't give me an appropriate answer . Ok, I know, I a dont spend every night at home, sometimes Im on the road from Monday to Friday, working hours are much longer, but let me say that.. When i worked 8 hours a day, i got home, and thinking what should I do to have more money, I just played computer, did nothing. Now even if I work 12-15 hours a day my salary is 4x than before, can afford lot of things, spending more useful time with my family or friends, so this is not that bad. . .

My classmates even laugh at me for my ambition. But people change. My heart has always been to trucks. I thought I'll be an IT person, but I got to be a truck driver. It's what I really want.

Very good points I believe it's how you look at things. You can fail at any job with the wrong mindset but I agree with you on the point of nobody owes you anything. I have been working since 16 and when I read a lot of reviews on truck driving companies, I believe it's because that person's expectation where to high especially just starting to drive. Start with the starter company and move on to a different company to make the career. That is what I"m planning to do once I get everything settled back down, I had started with PTL and they have called me to come back. I believe I will go back to PTL and get at least 1-2 yrs of driving experience then move on to another company but honestly thinking outside of the box has helped me out and hard work always pays off. I was at a trucking school 15 years ago to become a trucker, but I had also given my name to work in a correctional facility and they offered me something I couldn't refuse, but trucking still is in the back of my mind. Been contemplating getting into trucking. Something I’ve been studying and looking into for quite a while. I’ve also watched a lot of videos. I’ve disregarded all the negativity. I’m not afraid of hard work. I just want a little freedom and be able to enjoy what I’m doing. I’d also like to eventually own my own truck once I’ve put in my time and paid my dues. As I’ve been closing in on a decision. This video fired me up! I’m now determined that I’m going to do this trucking life! Keep the good content coming! Though most believe there are pros and cons to everything... that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t share the positives of trucking! Other truckers, those in training or individuals thinking of getting into trucking do not need to be discouraged from from making the leap due to all these sour people out here putting out negative videos about trucking. Ps: the only thing I’m a tad concerned about is that I’ve never driven a manual in a semi before. I’ve heard most trainers will fail you if you fail to shift correctly, double clutch correctly or hit a curb while turning. I understand being road ready and being safe on the road. It just seems very strict but again it may need to be. These are not just cars... just curious how hard it is to pass cdl training? Also how long do you have to ride with somebody before you are on your own? Just curious. I’ve never done this before. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks again!

Right on, especially with this younger generation. Nobody wants to start at the bottom and work their way up anymore. They want to instantly start off with a 6 figure salary, and sure, that would be nice, but it isn’t realistic. I’ve been trucking for 27 years now, and Lord knows I’ve paid my dues. Now I’m an owner-op (for 16 years now) leased on to a great company and have an awesome dedicated route. I truly love what I do. It didn’t happen overnight, but I was patient and willing to work hard. In fact, I STILL work hard, but it’s enjoyable hard work. Great video, Brian! 👍

I am an engineer considering switching careers to truck driving. Right out of the gate, I made $70k starting out and make $80k a year now. I have no student loan debt. This all sounds great, but I feel my personality does not mesh well in this field. Engineering typically requires extensive teamwork and leadership abilities that I do not have. I am not much of an innovator. Truck driving appeals to me (from the outside at least) because of the solitary nature. I don't plan on ever having a family but who knows what could happen I guess. I guess I am a bit concerned about the dietary aspect of the job, having to eat at truck stops all the time, etc.
My 1st yr in trucking I made $50 thousand & just finished my 2nd yr & made $70 thousand in the 2nd & that is being a company driver! So I teach people the $ is there to b made u just gotta want it!
I'll be putting my life in a storage unit and hitting the road as an OTR driver in about 8 weeks. I'm single with no responsibilities other than myself. I'm taking the opportunity to rack up as much experience as I can as quickly as possible. My uncles recommended that I wait until I can buy a truck out right to put myself in the best situation possible as an owner operator. I'm taking their advice to heart. I live in the truck when I'm not home, room and board is free.
I sometimes get free food and drinks from friendly waitresses.
You can own your own truck/business.
Work when you want, take off when you want.
Haul cool and interesting loads to strange interesting places.
No one looks over my shoulder, I'm a solo driver.
I stop when I want.
I eat when and where I want.
I sleep when and where I want.
As long as I make my pick ups and deliveries on schedule, no one bothers me.
It has been this way since I started driving truck back in 1998. It was the same way when my dad drove truck for 45 years.
I think you should find drivers who have many years of experience to mentor you. Don't be afraid to ask questions, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask..

I’ve been trucking for 33 years now. I’ve always worked for small companies and the last 20 years I’ve been driving a concrete mixer for a small company. Although it has paid the bills it has left me with an incredibly sore back. I’m 52 years old and really don’t know how to do much else so I’ll probably retire as a trucker. If I survive into my mid to late 60’s 😂🤣😎👍✌️

I'm 22. I've been driving for a year now amd yes it is hard. Both my kids and wife miss me when I'm gone but I couldn't do something else. I'm a second generation driver. Pay isn't the best but it's definitely getting better as time goes on. I'm really pushing to buy my first truck by the end of this year if not next year

I’ve always said “Trucking has to be IN you.” If it’s not, trucking is the wrong career for you. The pay IS miserable. You ARE gone from home, friends, family. You DO perform lots of work you don’t get paid for. It just ain’t for everyone.
The pay is better then cashiers, warehouse employees etc and they also have to walk all day.
So yes the pay isn't good but there is worse
Miserable pay is kind of relative to what one is coming from, and highly dependent on what they put into trucking.
Even my first trucking job was hands down the best money I’d ever made to that point. Solidly middle-class even though I worked the hours for it. The income *potential* in trucking is basically unlimited. Those big chrome stacks don’t grow on trees.
@@mr.butterworth In Europe you scale out fast. As an employee it's max +-15 euro an hour before taxes.. As o/o more, but competition is heavy. Many drivers and companies from eastern Europe work for less.
A hard working trucker gets 3500 after taxes Otr at best. Flatbed, hazmat often doesn't pay extra.
Imagine that Mexicans could take all the trucking jobs if they would like. That's what's happening in Europe...
The pay is miserable for those who are used to well paying jobs but if you've only ever worked a minimum wage job such as what I'm working right now, it's a huge step up.

Am thirty one this year and probably won’t have my full drivers license till am 34 and then I wanna get my class one it’s always been a dream to just be on the road for work. But I’ve struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction and it’s been my main priority every day just to get that dealt with and I feel that plays a big role in just the responsibility of being a truck driver to right, gotta have a good head on your shoulders, so yeah it being a lonely job means to like have a counsellor or someone to talk to you know that shits important that your mental health is in check driving it should be a video you should talk about to. had lots of time to think about doing this career. But when I think of doing other things I just really want to experience being a truck driver
