Yea I did film it at that time. I live in Australia and we live slightly in the future. That's why you are able to watch the video before it's even been filmed... I know it sounds crazy but time travel is some pretty crazy stuff. It's called gmt+10, well actually since dls has activated our time machine have moved an hour forward so it's gmt +11 now. Or should I say present time +11 hours. You guys had better stop living in the past, it's having very strange effects on the space time continuum!
When recording these videos I like to stay as close as possible to the screen while remaining parallel to it. If I was far away from the screen and zoomed in while the camera was semi sideways it would cause zooming it to only focus on one part of screen. To get everything I need to hold the camera in front of the screen then back at my mum at a different space so I'm not filming her nose due to being so close. To summarise I use many different angles/locations. Plus, tripods aren't really cheap
After watching probably all of your videos, I was bound to notice something! I'll bet the same goes with the other things people notice. You have loyal subscribers!
Awesome, feel free to pass these videos around with Spanish subtitles. Btw my mum reads all your comments and appreciates what a lovely person you are. In case they want to look at more videos don't forget to include a link to our channel. Btw are you sending it to your friends to view through email or are you uploading it to a Spanish video sharing website?
I've got a tiny handheld tripod but trust me... All it does is make everything much more shaky. It came with my camera... The problem is that to record these videos I need to constantly move forward, back and sideways to record both the screen and my mums reactions to the operating systems. A tripod can't do this because it can't move around and is instead stuck in one place. I could easily stand still as a tripod but then a lot of the finer details you have to look close at would be missed.
Well the computer this is supposed to run on has the following specs. Check out the minimum requirements for crysis and compare them to this... Release date: January 24, 1984 Introductory price: US$ 2,495 Discontinued: October 1, 1985 Operating system: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.2 CPU: Motorola 68000 @ 7.8336 MHz (6 MHz effectively) RAM: 128 kB Sorry to say it can't run crysis :(
Thanks for the links to the emulators, I have an old game from back then that I would really like to play again and if I can get it from the floppy to a new machine I won't have to worry about my old mac failing. Also, there were other versions of DOS back then too. She may have been on DrDOS or something like that. These posts make more sense if read from the bottom up : )
Seinfeld had an original Macintosh in his bookshelf for pretty much the entire series. If you see one anywhere, that's where you're likely to see one ;)
I can help out with a couple of your mum's questions. I used on of these back in the day. The Key Caps application displayed what would appear if you pressed key combinations. It looks like this one is not complete because with certain fonts if you held down the control key while pressing a letter you could type special characters and even graphical elements. So the Key Caps app made figuring those out possible.
ISO files usually refer to virtual cd/DVD images. Old Mac systems are downloaded as Roms. Download system 1.1 to system 6 here: rolli[dot]ch/MacPlus/welcome[dot]html
that's a completely unrelated personal channel of mine just like yet another one of my channels "AstralPhaser". These will be mentioned in the OSFirstTimer Documentary late next week.
She's referring to doing general highschool basic programming. All text based and that was over 20 years ago... Today she is an average user yet the more of these videos she does it brings her slowly to being a more advanced user.
That is totally how I felt. Since I wasn't around in that time period though I couldn't argue with her. I just know she typed stuff like 10 print "hello" 20 print "do you want to play" 30 goto 10
Cent OS has quite a few requests ;) for linux distros I used universal USB installer which works really well. Still, this is not a "linux distro review channel" but rather a GUI intuitivity test ranging as many operating systems through history as possible.
At first it was but trust me... It's just as easy to use as a normal mouse once you get the hang of it. Infact I am so used to it now that I can barely use a normal mouse to control a computer.
It's really interesting that Apple is revisiting the ideas of skeuomorphism and not having to press save. I like the page corners on the notepad to go back and forth. Really clever!
We first started having computers at school in about 1989 as well, and they were Apple II's. Never saw a PC or anything running Microsoft at school until the mid-late 90s after windows '95 took off. Cool thing about the Apple II was you could program in BASIC straight out of the box. No need for QBasic or anything. Just boot it up with no disk in and start programming.
This brings back old memories. My very 1st computer was a Macintosh 512K I can't remember which system version it had but according to wikipedia it could accept Macintosh system software up to version 4.1. If you wanted your mum to type on a proper word processor you needed something like MacWrite and unless you had a 2nd external disk drive it would involve a lot of disk swapping between the system disk and the data disk (MacWrite). You would eject the system disk, then insert the data disk in.
Chrome OS has a lot of requests but it can't boot on my computer and corrupted the partitions on my USB. While fixing my USB and getting my computer to detect it again I used some cd commands which fixed my USB but gave my computer a bsod. I'm not going near chrome OS again! It's too risky...
Then you would switch back and forth between the data disk and system disk to load it. I think MacWrite and MacPaint came with the Macintosh. Also the reason why so much stuff were greyed out on the menus was because nothing was selected. If you had clicked on a file then some of those greyed out options would of become black as they would of been available. The clipboard is for stuff that you copy and paste. Also the close box came way before the Win95 x close button.
The Font mover was how you would add and remove fonts from the system disk. Remember, these had 128K of memory and 400K floppies, so adding fonts limited what else you could have on the system disk. There were word processors and other applications but you had to make a new disk and add them to it. When you dragged a disk image to the trash it would eject the disk. Since you have no disk, there is nothing to eject.
I love how she says "well, why don't they just do x" as if the people designing operating systems for the first time ever would know of the assumptions that people would have about computers 30 years later.
Actually, the point of the Key Caps program is to show you what happens if you hold down different combinations of keys. It was useful for learning how to type things like special characters: é, í, ü, ñ, et cetera.
Damn it! Well, i needed a new computer anyways. I have also noticed some lag when watching TH-cam. Also, why are you guys filming in black and white?.... oh wait..... oh yeah, my display is black and white. Man, i really need an upgrade.
"I just move it away." No, there we go again. :D After using so many different operating systems and even using operating systems with the close button on the left side and operating systems without an X on the close button, she still can't stand it when there's no X on the close button.
This is really interesting, so many people of that age are completely computer illiterate, with no disrespect to your mum, but she seems to have had some experience in programming on traditional command line, its really what kids today should be able to have some experience with.
The good feature about this o's is that you can rename the apps by going to them (SOMEWHERE IN THE SYSTEM FOLDERS) then rename EG-rename alarm clock to clock
On the old macs you did eject the disk and then switch it off. Later versions, you did put the floppy in the trash and it would eject it. Though by that time you had Special > Shutdown, which would eject the disk and turn it off.
The first Macintoshes had a manual power button that you could reach on the right back corner, that was how you turned it off, you did not need to prepare the OS for turning it off.
i think both of you know Amara (a.k.a. universalsubtitles) - it's a great online subtitling tool that we can associate any video from youtube, vimeo, etc., and anyone can help

Hey I just noticed that the apple logo on the desktop in System 1 has a bite of a single pixel. Did anyone else notice that lol!
I actually did not know is that thanks for the Easter egg

I meant by default... That notepad application doesn't have a save feature, it's autosave. You can however get 3rd party applications like you said ;)

I still do that holding mouse thing on dropdown menus today
She used to until a few weeks ago... I installed rocket dock on her computer and applied the xp theme.
She already has on our other channel ;)
Back in the 1980's my mum actually used a Tandy trs 80 as her main home computer. How did she cope! It's had a text based operating system!!!
I've got a tiny handheld tripod but trust me... All it does is make everything much more shaky. It came with my camera...

It's a trackball. It's much better to use than a mouse due to ergonomic reasons.
how can it be better if u cant use the internet on that
It's mini vmac but I made my screen resolution very low and then pressed alt + enter to hide the windows 7/ make it full screen.
Hey Philip, you're using Mini Vmac for Mac OS System 1.1? Just wanting to make sure.

Still looking forward to seeing Diana try Haiku, great series by the way
BeOS - development by Be Inc. in 1991 ?
No idea, she denies it was any form of dos though.
*1:53** "C:" ? isn't that MS DOS?*
It could've been Apple DOS?
+Rocky Lincourt Apple DOS had no relation to the DOS made by IBM and Microsoft.
Nope It's "OS Drive"
+Rocky Lincourt Microsoft DOS always names the first driver "C", while Unix like OSes name them hd0, sd0 and so on.
C: is OS Drive. 😛

Is the os text based os she describes at the beginning MS-DOS 3.3? That came out in 1989... The prompt was C>
I don't know if anybody already told you, but on newer Mac OSs (including OS X), dragging a disk to the garbage can will unmount and eject the disk.
Windows 7 is her favourite right now. Haiku OS will come eventually but I want ther to try beos before she tries haiku.
I was going to get her to try that but due to problems emulating it using sheep shaver on 3 different computers I have given up.

He meant Macintosh System 10 (OS X)
System 7 was probably the second-longest version of Mac OS, behind Mac OS X.
7 had most of the same features as 8, but looked more like 6 and earlier. 8 was mainly a cosmetic difference from 7.
