    Currently on a five day , I’ve done several three day fasts . I have healed many things through fasting. Brain is alive again, pain has diminished all over body .

    Today is Day 5 and I feel amazing! Highly recommend for everyone. Do it! You won’t regret it. You may not be able to do 5 days right away. Try one meal a day first, then try intermittent fasting where you don’t eat breakfast and stop late night eating. Practice your ability to say no to food.

    Triglycerides remaining higher at three months compared to d0 might be caused by the increase of fat metabolism imprinted by the 5day fasting. In other words, metabolism versatility improves

    I've not gone beyond 40 hours Fasting. Currently prepping for a 72-96 hour fast. You've got me very motivated to keep it up.

    I did lab work on a 4 day water fast and saw doctor same day . My BP went from 150/90 to 110/70. Cholesterol was surprisingly high. Fasting glucose usually around 100 on previous test, this time was 73 after 4 days fasting.

      There's a fasting protocol for lipid test. See the fasting method. It's like two weeks before labs cycle eating every four hours throughout the day. Fasting dumps lipids into the bloodstream. Gives artificial number mine was 70 points until I learned this.

    finally something healthy for me to binge ;) your videos! lol i've been practicing forms of prolonged fasting and intermittent fasting for just over a year now, but i REALLY need to get my head back in the game. 70 more lbs to go for me til my ideal weight (20 down in the year i've been going). i've mostly been doing 24s and 48s, longest i've gone is 6.5 days! wanting to master 7 days. videos like these keep me motivated and focused!!

    One thing that comes in mind is that people mind also change their behavior/approach to food/eating after the study.
    I mean, for me for example, fasting showed me that cravings might come not from physiological needs (i.e. I need energy) but from psychological "needs" - i.e. eating will help me avoid some emotions I do not want to feel.
    So, after fasting, I chnaged my relationship with food and started choosing a bit different food etc.
    So, the question is if the people changed their habits/approach to food after the fasting.

    Good video. It appears, from your videos on fasting and insulin and my own experience ( int-fasting, and 3 and 5 day ) the key takeaway may very well be, resetting or calibrating insulin-resistance greatly enhancing benefits of healthier diet going forward. Lots of good avenues for further research and myth-busting ; addressing goals, ie, fat loss, vs weight (muscle ) gain and body chemical upkeep/balances. and there is no secret to overcome genetic disposition... it's harder for some, impossible for some, and easy for some.

    Just done 5 days 17 hours. Felt like needed to break out of boredom. Black tarry diarrhea past day or so.
    Broke fast with couple pieces bread and butter. Tin of chicken stock. Banana muffin and now couple of yoghurts. Lost 5 kg+. Worked out during fast. First two days worst. Days 3 and 4 okay. Made my mind you to crack 5 days. Wasn't hungry and could have continued but felt bored not eating

      Omg you never come off a fast like that 😮you come off a fast with veggies or fruits only read Dr fungs book on fasting , or look up Cole Robertson the snake diet guy he does a lot of research about fasting ! He has a bit of a potty mouth yells a lot but he is very good at this fasting stuff, worth a looks❤

    Weight creeping back after fasting is not an issue. I hope nobody believes fasting is a magic trick to get you slim -- you still have to put in effort to keep your gains after you have achieved them.
    Thinking you can fast *once* for 5 days and be slim forever is like thinking you can run daily for a month and be healthy for life.
    Not monitoring body composition is really poor study design here. You want to understand how much of that weight loss was fat and how much was muscle / everything else.
    I think the most important results of a 5 day water fast is not weight loss itself -- a lot of it is usually regained soon. The most important results are overall health improvements, especially reduced insulin resistance as well as mental improvements -- it trains your willpower and gives you sense of accomplishment.
    Personally, I have been running throughout my week long fast. On my second day my performance dropped severely, but about day 4-5 it started going back up. After couple of days of refeeding my performance and especially endurance jumped much higher than before I started the fast -- my suspicion being improved ability to burn fat improving my running at my slow speeds.

    Fabulous video and longer term insights. I only do shorter fasts up to 48 hrs end of wk on top of time restricted feeding each day and eat healthy whole foods - mainly Flexitarian/Mediterranean (not Keto which will cause large leaps in lipids on fasting). I do however take fish oil tablets and a few other supplements to lower triglycericides and LDL/VLDL each meal (as well as BSL) despite that my lipid/BSL profile are normal, before I start a fast.
    Many people on intermittent fasting long term have improved lipid profiles but I believe it really depends on your diet and your original levels.
    ie I think your 2 hypotheses are both correct. LDL transports cholesterol from liver to peripheral tissues including the adrenal glands and gonads for both hormone synthesis and cell membrane repair and it is known that cortisol does increase somewhat in fasting.
    Triglycerides are mobilized and used for fuel after conversion to ketones to spare what little glucose is left for brain use so they should be elevated during your fast. They however will also be elevated if you keep eating lots of fats during refeeding or if you eat too many carbs without also increasing your fiber intake. The other thing is exercise. If you aren't burning them off, you are storing them.

    Dr Ekberg explains the cholesterol phenomenon on his video where he fasted for 100 hours. I'm not exactly sure (because I haven't studied medicine) but apparently one has to look deeper at the Ldl - p because the increase is in the good fluffy ones and not the dense ones.

    A part of this puzzle that is missing is what is being consumed during refeeding as well as after departing for the remaining 3 months.
    If you have insulin resistance why would you return to the diet that got you there?

    The liver doesn’t produce cholesterol particles to transport fat. It produces lipoproteins which transport fat, cholesterol, liposoluble vitamins, etc. It is important to make that distinction. LDL and HDL are not cholesterol. They are vessels for various substances, including cholesterol.
    Having said that, I don’t really care about cholesterol or lipoprotein numbers. I don’t believe they are at all causal in heart disease.

    Valtor longo said that the body resets its ability to use fat as fuel during a 5 day fast, so these increases in ldl/hdl would concur with that.
    Also he said the benefits come from autophagy and stem cells being released months after the fast.
    More TH-camrs really should interview him

    Thank you for the video but I am so confused.
    I do a 48 hour fast once a week for almost 2 years and I also do keto for the next 2.5 days immediately following my fast (have been doing that for the last 7 months).
    My triglycerides plummetted since when I first started doing the fast and continues to be very low now.
    My LDL was high before I started the fast and spiked up since the fast and recently improved by 20% but still more elevated than my doctor is comfortable with. I continue to resist taking the statins per doctor's recommendation.
    My bp was 130/80 before fasting and now like 110/80.
    But I did lose a bunch of weight I'm sure helped with the bp. Was 165 lbs and now between 143 lbs to 150 lbs.
    Anyway super confused about elevated triglyceride from your video in light of my results.

    colestrol raise is quite normal, liver already makes 80% of the colestrol , by not eating the fuel source is body fat , colestrol is essential, it is the carb in the mix thats the problem

    Raised cholesterol is the body’s reaction to stress. Cholesterol being used to build glucocorticoids like adrenaline and cortisol. Cortisol causes insulin resistance. It makes sense from a survival standpoint. The body says, “I better become insulin resistant so I can store any shave I encounter as fat”. Metabolism is thereafter lowered and excess energy is saved in the form of fat via insulin resistance.

      I have done fasting for 3 to 4 days like 3 times in my life and on the contrary my triglycerides crashed very low endeed, my cholesterol goes up tho, I have read studies that note that triglycerides actually get significantly low with fasting and that’s what makes sense biochemically.

    Great content and presentation! Thank you. In terms of why TG are higher, if ones body becomes more dual fuel (sugar/fat) as a result of fasting, what if our body then sees more utility in fat based fuels - like TG? Interested to get your perspective on this as the PhD in the room :)

    the increase in TG could be that the body got used to utilizing more fats even when glucose is available.
    When i started cardio fasted i was very week at first but after weeks of training i was much better, and even after a good period of not fasting i felti kept these gainz for a long time. I also remember to start getting irritable when hungry and trembeling and after a few mornings of fasting it went away forever even if i eat normaly, as long as i fast occasionally.

    2:18 2:36 :How do you come to the quick conclusion that they lost subtantial FAT withing 5 days of fasting, rather than primarily muscle mass? Doesn't muscle mass tend to go before fat? Isn’t “loss of weight => loss of body fat” precisely a common mistake? How is “weight” even a relevant indicator for anything but largely overweight people? (which as you point out is not even the case in this study)
    What did these people do in the lab for 5 days? Did they train or just zone in hypoglycemia limbo? In which case, what was the effect on training?

    Cortisol is probably off the charts. I did a 7 day water fast, felt like crap. Didn't lose not one pound. I didn't do any blood test though and at the time I had Cushing's.

    one possible explanation for the cholesterol at 3 months is that they may have been able to break their addiction to sugars and changed their diet to a more protein-based diet. Just one possible variable

    In my experience, fiber is the best way to reduce cholesterol numbers. When I was on a strict keto diet, my cholesterol was sky high. ApoB was 186. Switching to a high fiber diet (i.e. lots of legumes), literally cut that number in half. So of course, we aren't taking in fiber on a multi-day water fast, and cholesterol will increase.

    I have a potential explanation. I watched a video about cholesterol- wish I could tell you the name or anything- wherein it explained that all cholesterol was actually the same and whether it was good or bad had to do with how it is directed. That's the very simplistic explanation from a non-doctor me, so be patient. They said something about triglycerides raising after a fast because the body is doing much more repair work than it had been doing before the fast. That's all I have for you to work with.

    Cholesterol has gone up because the body is mobilising fat to be used for energy. There's more cholesterol in the blood stream because all triglycerides and fats in general are moving around from their stores to be used in target tissues.

    Hm ... just thinking:
    One part of the weight loss from water fasting is the lack of glycogene and the water it holds in the body; the second - and likewise fast effect - is the loss of gut contents; both can in my experience sum up to 3-4 kilograms.
    That will be restored with a normal diet within a few days.

    im curious to see what these types of fasts do with muscle and organ tissue. claims exist of muscle preservation, and/or that muscle and organ tissues restore after the fast, but im not confident in these claims.
    im so excited about this subject, as someone who has done multi-week water fasting.

      Muscle mass is largely preserved, but after a time, there's definitely some loss.

      It mostly depends how lean you are. A guy with 20% body fat will lose minimal quantity of muscle. A guy who is athlete around 10-12 % body fat will lose a lot of muscle.
      Since I am at about 12% bf I have tried this on myself and I lose muscle during my 2 day fast.

    Nice work with the presentation. There are health benefits to fasting however I would imagine there is greater muscle loss because to build muscle you need protein intake every 4 hours.

    I'm starting day 5 of a 5 day fast, I've lost 11 pounds, or 4.68% of my total body weight. I started at 235 pounds, I'm sure that's above normal. Last year's 5 day fast I lost 10 pounds.
    What was interesting was I did my first 5 day fast last year, and it broke my food discipline I had formed dieting the previous year. I really struggled to get back to eating specific things at specific times

      @@lynntrovert2471 so far it seems like fasting is helping me. I have lost 90 plus pounds in last year. I have very little loose skin. Under arms and belly. But I have been doing a 5 day straight fast every month plus mostly intermittent fasting. Like I say, seems to be working and loose skin I do have seems to be tightening slowly as well.

    Thank you for this topic. I would like to do this sort of fast to improve metabolic health (and potentially longevity through autophagy) but I don't have the reserves to do so healthily. This is suppose, is where Prolon saw a gap in the market as a treatment protocol for those with chronic illness or who lack the willpower to comply with a water fast unsupported.

      @@littlevoice_11 I did Prolon for four months. My triglycerides dropped 50 points. My overall blood panel much improved, including glucose. But very little weight due to a medication that I have to take for chronic illness. At least I maintained a 30 lb weightloss from previous ketogenic regimen. My focus now is uric acid and associated illnesses, and I have problems with research that does not include differentiation between ages, health status and sex. I have been tempted to recreate the Prolon diet by making my own food, the marketing of their product and the expense kinda bug me. That would mean it kinda boils down to calorie restriction. Oh! And I think these cycles of fasting have to be repeated for long term effects.

      @@littlevoice_11 I was horrified re sugar level as a strict ketogenic follower, but I fell for the explanation by Longo. My daily numbers that I monitor were never better….it appeals to me Longo’s life as Pescatarian and vegetarian, but so does Carnivore. Seems calorie restriction, carb reduction, insulin control is key on all.

    For the finding of higher triglycerides after 3 months, did the study subjects have their calorie and macronutrient consumption tracked during this period? The explanation might be behavioral--i.e. after the 5 day fast was over, maybe the deprivation triggered some long-term "poorer" eating habits--(the body thinks periodic famine conditions may be a regular occurrence in the future, therefore, test subjects become more "fat seeking" in their dietary choices)

      Start slow. Skip a meal. Go to two meals a day, no snacks. Then one meal a day....thats 24 hours. Then after you've done OMAD for a week or two try 36 hours, then 48 hours.

      Thx for the Video. Why are people so focused on water fasting? IMO i consider the Heal-fasting by Dr. Otto Buchinger as superior. His "water- fasting" allowed the patient to cook a vegetable broth (no eating, just drinking the broth once a day instead of only-water) to counter the head-achs and loss of vitamins.

      the idea of Dr. Buchinger (from year 1935) focused to prevent side effects such as headaches, circulatory disorders or flatulence while water-fasting for a long time period; 10-12 days.
      Basic Rules of the modern version:
      Before the water fasting:
      - consult your Doctor; with some health conditions, fasting is risky.
      - 1-3 Preparation/Relief-days. Cook and eat only steamed or porriged vegetable. (There are variations eating rice)
      While Fasting:
      - every 2-3 days: Clean the intestines with enema or an irrigator (if possible)
      - Sport and/or Yoga are recommended to prevent muscle-loss.
      - Cook the vegetable broth (no salt, just vegetables, herbs and water) and drink 200 - 400 ml each day
      - selfmade vegetable juice (fe. tomato, carrot) once per day are also allowed.
      Optional:
      - Meditation
      - "liver wrap" (Warm water bottle around your stomach/liver for 30-40 minutes.)
      After the fasting:
      - Start slow for 1-2 days with mostly eating vegetables and fruits, cooked and steamed food that is easy for your digestions.
      - Change your eating habbits; Withdrawel from sugar-addiction.

    When i was doing 10 days water fast i had high trigl. Slightly high colesterol, after 10 days i had my blood checked had loverd triglicerides and almost dubled cloesterol also had high lvls of uric best explantaion for this was given by Buchinger wilhelmy doctors in one of theyrs videos about long therm fasting should lookt them up if you havent jet thery work is great, ps ty for video always plesure to learn sonething new

    Great video, do you know whether just balanced diet with local fresh food and some fresh meat and fasting and moderate exercise is key to longevity. There are tons of video of carni crazy bashing vegan and vice versa

    So, Professor, have you done a five day fast? I would be afraid of passing out.
    A few years ago I lost a dear friend and subsequently lost my appetite for several weeks. I wasn’t fasting, but I definitely was not eating much. I had a blood test during this period and my total cholesterol was shockingly high. Maybe the result of utilizing fatty acids as fuel?

      No, I haven't. There's been no need in my life, plus with me lifting weights religiously, it's counter to those goals.
      I'm sorry to hear about your friend; I can imagine that was extremely turbulent, emotionally. I certainly understand the lack of appetite; I've been there, myself. It's possible it was elevated for that reason, but that's just educated speculation on my part, Ariel.

      @@Physionic That was probably the closest I came to fasting, but I remember when I did eat it was mostly this grain bread with something called coconut butter on it. So between not eating much but having this coconut butter, my cholesterol shot up.
      Just an observation.

    Fasting may not improve things dramatically unless you change your diet-and that includes basal insulin. I had dramatic weight loss fasting, but was only successful in keeping it off when I changed my macronutrients, reducing carbohydrates and processed foods (including seed oils.)
    PS: Virtually all the standard metrics for health improved, with the exception of LDL, because LDL is BS. My coronary artery calcium scan even went down to "zero."

    My thoughts on elevated TRG after the fast. As was mentioned the weight came back. So they had calories surplus. Since they probably were on standard carb centric diet the excess of carbs was converted into fats and being delivered to tissue by TRG.

      @@alvarocoronel67 Yes, it happens, kind of always happening, we do not need to fast for days for it to happen, even the break between meals can increase autophagy, also exercise and lack of nutrients.

      I believe this is dependant on your body weight/body fat % when you are in a caloric deficit. Body builders frequently go into caloric deficits in preparation for shows; during this period they frequently report feeling significantly worse and generally feel much better during the off-season where they go into a caloric surplus.
      So if you're at a high body fat %, I speculate a caloric deficit would probably have similar benefits to a fast as you have the resources to burn through whereas at a lower % body fat this is not the case.

    When we engage in physical activity & or fasting out cholesterol rises as it's like the trucks bringing materials to the sites that need fuel or repair. Mostly repair.
    Hence in the begining of a project the cholesterol is higher do to work load or project management in the body.
    Most professions know this, yet still prescribe high blood pressure meds knowing high cholesterol is normal amaongest Athletes.

    0:51 41 people in such a fasting study staying at a lab for 8 days can be considered comprehensive
    1:14 baseline, post-fast and post-refeed measurements done, ok good
    1:27 one month and third month mark details, ok good
    1:54 what kind of a graph is that, how broad can the plotting be, especially when the people are 'normal' thus low in weight, the graph needs to be detailed
    2:05 almost 7 percent weight loss does not mean anything especially when the subjects are already low in weight, where is the differentiation of fat, muscle, fluid comparison (at least simple impedence measurements), pre and post fasting?

      Excellent point about the graph - I noticed that, as well. They could easily have made the Y axis more granular to see the results more clearly.
      Unfortunately, they didn't do any DXA scans, so we don't know.

    What is your opinion? I am diagnosed NAFLD, and my enzymes were around 550 after a 48 hour fast (I am/was a heavy drinker until the last few weeks also)... after those results I have cut back alcohol to rarely... and I have been losing weight with keto/occasionally 24-36 hour fasts... is the fasting causing more damage than it is repairing due to the weight loss?

    You dont say anything about lean body mass. Every fast what is longer than 24 hours, you loose a good amount of kean tissue. Not so well, or?
