  • Hello there! Part 2 of the JRPG Timeline. The 90's was a great time for the JRPG's as it thrived with some successful and memorable titles. It brings back some great memories of late night level grinding. Any of these games covered your favorite JRPG? Let me know what you think of the vid! And if you want me to continue doing timeline vids. Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe if you haven't already. Thank you!

Great Vid! Brings back a lot of memories of my childhood. I remember playing chrono trigger for hours I could not stop. I think I beat the whole game within a weekend.

Chrono Trigger is literally perfect. The storyline, gameplay, graphics, combat system, and soundtrack are flawless in my opinion.

I give an honorable mention to the RPG Maker series of RPG creation software which saw it's first iteration released in 1992 with RPG Tsukuru Dante 98 for the NEC PC-98 series of Japanese PCs.
I will also mention that The Legend of Heroes series, a spinoff of the Nihom Falcom's Dragon Slayer series, saw its first title in 1989 with Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes for NEC PC-88. The game would receive an number of console ports throughout the 90s. The Trails of sub-series would only start in 2004 with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for Windows.
For your next video, do consider talking about Grandia and Atelier Marie: Alchemist of Salburg for your next JRPG timeline video. The former because its the most acclaimed JRPG to debut on the Sega Saturn (it got a PS1 port two years later) and the latter because it was the first game in the long running Atelier series by Gust. I also don't expect any of the plethora of tactical RPGs to make an appearance as they are distinct enough of a genre to dedicate a whole video or video series to.
Looking to the future decades, I don't know how you are going to cover the rise of mobile phone and gatcha JRPGs. There is a lack of documentation and/or preservation of titles, especially earlier examples. The successful ones tend to get more coverage and increase in length as they continually append new content. It doesn't help that games as a service tend to be delisted and/or stop functioning once support ends.

Earthbound does it for me! Love the comedy and the modern sci fi setting.

Absolutely! Lufia 2 for me was a big improvement from the first. Thanks for the comment!
