This documentary is very well done. Balwin IV was a very fascinating individual. I can't imagine having that kind of responsibility at such a young age, with a terrible disease.

Whats more impressive is that he did it twice, both times with smaller armies than Saladin and both times Saladin ran away. Imagine being healthy Sultan of massive empire, having at your disposal hundreds of thousands soldiers and running away from sick teenager who is being carried on a bed.
@@alasarcher400I feel like doing such things arises immense Respect! Saladin (so it’s illustrated) was a humble and respectful person! Especially in battle
He was was one hell of a leader even in politics. He dragged his half dead body to Guys castle to chastise him personally for not stepping up to Saladin when he attacked with a small enough army to face head on. Saladin can't be stopped by a coward so Jerusalem was doomed after Baldwin's death and he knew it.
@@Luckylozer7 Amazingly, this is what made these leaders great for me. The leprosy humbled Baldwin and made him wiser than without his sickness, albeit, at the expense of his physical health. Saladin, an already great conqueror at the time, meanwhile, was continuously being humbled by this seemingly decrepit leper teenager; hence, making him wiser than without him.
The massive, about 20,000 strong army that Guy de Lusignon squandered at the Battle of Hattin was mostly financed by Henry II of England in penance for the murder of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, for which he was held responsible. One can imagine just how pissed off Henry was when he heard the news that Guy had not only lost his entire army, the largest force the crusaders had ever put into battle against the Muslims, but had practically lost the whole Kingdom of Jerusalem, including the Holy City at the same time ! 🥵
King Baldwin IV did not deserve to be called or to be remembered as the "Leper King", it's disrespectful. His capabilities and accomplishments as a king should not be overshadowed by this illness. He was a king, like the rest of the great kings who lived before, during, and after his time. People must focus on his achievements, strength and bravery as a knight of the cross instead of what killed him. King Baldwin IV must be remembered as the defender of his beloved Jerusalem, a king who loved his people, a king who did not assume to be above God. He did incredibly well for a very little amount of time, but he left a legacy in the history of mankind that'll last for a lifetime. Baldwin IV was the king of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

The craziest thing and what I don't think gets harped on enough was that the guy died at age 24. He was possibly one of the sole reasons the Kingdom of Jerusalem held together as long as it did, and most of that happened before he was an adult by our standards or barely into adulthood. It makes you wonder if he would've been an Alexander without the leprosy or if the leprosy put some kind of wisdom in him that normally comes with age.

It took thousands of dedicated and clever men nearly 100 years to build the crusaders states - it took only two men and just one year to practically destroy them ; Guy de Lusignon and Saladin.
yes, its very unfortunate the the states built on pillaging, raping and murdering tens of thousands of innocents who did nothing wrong came to an abrupt end.
You watched the film. Real Guy de Lusignan wasn’t bad as in the film, he was hesitant and easily manipulated, and couldn’t deal with the nobles’ bickering among themselves.

Very interesting to get an alternate view point on the politics that played out between Raymond III's faction and Guy's faction. I'd always heard the more common variant. Particularly it was interesting to here a more favorable view of the Reginald "the wolf" of Kerak. I knew Kingdom of Heaven's rendition was largely bunk, but there were perspectives here I hadn't considered. On a side note, have you ever read Harold Lamb's Iron Men and Saints? if so what is your opinion of the book?
I was really excited to learn kingdom of heaven existed then I've gotten progressively more and more disappointed as I read and hear comments about it. I mean, the commenters were praising Saladin as a man who cared deeply for his men. None of his men would've agreed with this statement after his fighting with Richard the lionheart.
I like to imagine him watching our time from the spirit world. He probably wishes he could have received modern treatment for his illness but more importantly would love to have had today's weaponry. I bet he and Saladin are good friends now, along with many others they associated with and are enjoying the show watching us now.
I'd love a video about the fall of Constantinople. I know it's not crusades, but it's related in a way. It was what, 140 years after the last crusade the city fell? You could discuss how this was the very thing the crusades hoped to prevent, and the epic siege itself. Maybe discuss how it happened, why the western Christian nations didn't come to aid the city, the way the relationship deteriorated between the two churches and past strife (like the 4th crusade). Your siege of Malta video was so good!
The Eastern Roman Empire lasted 897 years after the Western part fell. Constantinople and its Finale Emperor died fighting alonside his Special contingent of Germanic guards.
They didn't come because they no longer needed them the Pope was sitting fat up north and much like the Holy Land, they couldn't get people to move to the area. Important note, the Lombard brothers in Venice had financed the Credit for many Crusades out of Venice. The House of Bard became very wealthy financing Wars/Crusades. 100 years later when the King of England refused to payback his loans, the descendants of the Lombards, the Rothschilds moved to London, overthrew the King & became the House of London. When Napoleon lost at Waterloo they took over the World becoming the World Bank(IMF) they schemed with Bankers in America, created the "Federal Reserve" with Rockefeller & Morgan Stanley and have stained the EARTH with Blood. @@Snow-pi7cd I don’t think you understand lol. Saladin and Christian Crusaders would’ve had a cooperative, if not peaceful relationship if the actions Guy de Lusignan and Renald de Chattaillon hadn’t provoked a war between Jerusalem and the Ayyubids. If Baldwin had at least produced a legitimate heir, Guy would never have been made king.
@@Snow-pi7cd Baldwin was special lol. The dude rode out with his follow knights of the Order of Lazarus (all of which had leprosy) and routed a superior force commanded by arguably the greatest general of that time.
@@Snow-pi7cd that’s true, but Baldwin didn’t prosecute a war like Richard did. Baldwin fought a couple of battles on his own territory. It’s the fact that a 16 year old boy with leprosy routed an enemy army is what made him badass.
i feel like baldwin was too hard on Guy. Sure he didn't take out saladin's army, but he also wasn't baited into attacking them when they wanted him to, and defended the country and after that handed the army back to baldwin pretty much without a scratch on it
Our information is kind of sketchy. We're not really sure why Baldwin was so unhappy with Guy. My guess is that it had more to do with Guy's capacity to lead than anything. I think that something happened during that campaign that made Baldwin feel that Guy couldn't effectively inspire confidence in the army. I think that's the crucial element, although again, we can't be entirely sure. The results of Hattin seem to bear this out. At Hattin, morale collapsed very quickly and Guy showed himself unable to unite the army for common action. Even given the terrible situation at Hattin, I think a commander like Baldwin IV or Richard the Lionheart (neither of whom would've gotten into the situation in the first place) still could've pulled off a victory.
I agree, and I feel like Baldwin was unjust in regards to Guy. Unless there's more information, like Guy openly slighting Baldwin in some way, I'm inclined to think that the whole ordeal was pretty wrong. It seems like Guy was just driven into a corner given his otherwise very strange actions after that remarkable campaign. But, again, maybe there's more to it that we haven't seen yet. Hopefully something appears one day to shine some light on the situation.
Maybe you're forgetting that the marriage between guy & Baldwin's sister provided Jerusalem with support & funds & fighting men.. Meaning if guy killed saladin, which he should have had, since he clearly could, his importance have had been reduced, sth he wouldn't have wanted to do if he wanted to make sure Jerusalem needs him & not until he becomes king, On his way back(saladin) after being defeated & almost killed by the Bedouin tribes, guy commanded them not to assault saladin, & then proceeded to start fighting with the Bedouin tribes(a key ally of Jerusalem), Guy also had a great charm in making sure, everyone hates him, the principality of Antioch or any other crusader kingdoms hated guy as time went on. Now, you imagine how someone like Baldwin, - who keeps a kingdom like Jerusalem United, makes sure commerce continues with the ayubbids despite the war, Makes sure all the different orders (hospitaller, Templar etc) stay focused, makes sure the nobility & the several kingdoms within Jerusalem stays crystal clear & avoid conflicts within the kingdom, would react to someone like Guy... Who despite being clearly given the clear certainly of succession, was doing everything that was pissing everyone off.
@@RealCrusadesHistory casual kid stop distorting the history, you could never imagine a victory against Saladin no matter how much well organized and united your army is, the second greatest warrior ever to step on earth

Yeah in UK, Europe and Minnesota. I'm paying very close attention to the 1.6B cult followers even studied what they believe. Honestly they're all wicked, deceive the disbelievers

Too bad the Christians dont have that same respect towards Saladin.
@@frozzytango9927I respect Saladin. He did not massacre the Christians in Jerusalem, and from what I've heard he was generally very chivalrous. Ironic how an Arab is more chivalrous than an annointed knigh, goes to show how good a person he was and how bad most crusaders were.
I'm Christian, by the way.
@@thatgoose9705 yeah but look at the comments and you see so many people disrespect Saladin..
I respect Saladin.. According to the saying: You give me respect so I'll give it back to you.
@@frozzytango9927 I don't think it's disrespect so much as ignorance. I would wager most people who hate Saladin have no little to know clue about the life of Baldwin IV. Both Kings were far ahead of their time in ethics, morality and mutual cultural understanding at a time where leaders like them came few and far between.
This documentary is very well done. Balwin IV was a very fascinating individual. I can't imagine having that kind of responsibility at such a young age, with a terrible disease.
😀 I really enjoyed both versions of the movie "Kingdom of Heaven." So when I saw your post on "King Baldwin the IV," I was excited to learn more about such a charismatic person in history. You did not disappoint. Thank you and your team for doing his Majesty justice!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Theres 2 versions? What do you mean?
@@Str8murkufool17The movie of “Kingdom of Heaven” made the cruel Saladin a wise and kind Sultan, and demonized the a wise and brave Baldwin as a cruel and terrifying King.
@@AlexKinPongLo I know the movie wasn't very realistic but the movie certainly absolutely did not depict King Baldwin as a cruel and terrifying King. Did you not watch the movie? It depicted him as a righteous and wise man who passes down his wisdom and sense of justice to Balian.
@@AlexKinPongLowatch The Director's cut extended version
To ride into battle leading your army as a leper.... wow..... that to me is true true mental strength... something I wish to learn
Dude went to battle on his bed? That’s pretty committed. The guys carrying the bed even more so! 😂
@@Luckylozer7
Amazingly, this is what made these leaders great for me.
Everyone was pissed at Guy dawg
Give me back my legion!!!

Hell, just decades ago we were firebombing and nuking cities and as we speak thousands of civilians are being killed in Gaza, in the very place Baldwin ruled.
Wow! As I just saw an interesting short on Baldwin and Saladin, I typed the names into the search bar.
Baldwin had no feeling in his arm due to his disease and controlled his horses with his knees - which is astounding and no small feat in war! I'm going to make coffee, charge up the tablet and sit back and enjoy this documentary!
Thank you for the upload!
Amazing documentary on one of the most underrated leaders in History
Thanks for stopping by! My goal was to make this a very thorough examination of Baldwin's life.
Alexander The Great Genghis Khan Baldwin IV Napoléon I and H***** but nevermind..
Really unbelievable.
As usual a great informative, detailed and well made documentary friend. 🤴King Baldwin IV ✠ fought, ruled, and acted in every way as if he didn't have the illness. What a magnificent, Valorous and worthy King. If only he lived longer.
Thanks Stefan!
I love his story... a best example of a good and capable king
Baldwin is such an inspiration he is everything a King and Christian should be, what a guy!
1:15:44 this scene upsets me greatly so. a great king with dire strife travels across his kingdom, rides in crippling condition to knock on the gates of ascalon, only to be refused admission by his own brother inlaw. unforgiveable.
We should all strive to be like Baldwin, even if we fall well short of this brave, noble and wise man.
"Many fall in the face of chaos... But not this one. Not today."
both baldwin and saladin were shrewd and capable leaders. dedicated to their creeds and the spirit of their laws. regardless of their temporal statuses.
I also appreciate how you gave Guy some of the due that is warrented. There were definite things to criticize about him, but his campaign strategy wasnt one that was necessarily poor.

The Spirit World?
Nah, they're asleep.

I though they were Slavic
These are Private Banks held by a few truly Powerful men. Ukraine owes them 60.7 billion & counting. They are Debt Farmers, they do not care about money, its Control from the Shadows.

What's kind of insane is that Leprosy isn't nearly the same disease it was then. It's caused by a very slow growing bacteria and can be treated/cured with modern day antibiotics.
If Baldwin were alive, there wouldn’t have been a Battle of Hattin.
obviously,..but the end would still have been the same....just taken a bit longer....

Amazing History about Baldwin IV.
Baldwin - Legend and Champion
i feel like baldwin was too hard on Guy.
Meaning if guy killed saladin, which he should have had, since he clearly could, his importance have had been reduced, sth he wouldn't have wanted to do if he wanted to make sure Jerusalem needs him & not until he becomes king,
On his way back(saladin) after being defeated & almost killed by the Bedouin tribes, guy commanded them not to assault saladin, & then proceeded to start fighting with the Bedouin tribes(a key ally of Jerusalem),
Guy also had a great charm in making sure, everyone hates him, the principality of Antioch or any other crusader kingdoms hated guy as time went on.
Now, you imagine how someone like Baldwin, - who keeps a kingdom like Jerusalem United, makes sure commerce continues with the ayubbids despite the war,
Makes sure all the different orders (hospitaller, Templar etc) stay focused, makes sure the nobility & the several kingdoms within Jerusalem stays crystal clear & avoid conflicts within the kingdom, would react to someone like Guy... Who despite being clearly given the clear certainly of succession, was doing everything that was pissing everyone off.
