Liverpool Street Station scenes….The thought of those passengers getting the carriage doors closed from their risky inside carriage positions and with real risks of getting their fingers pinched let alone squeezed in their daring but necessary operation to close the swinging doors really gives me a right nasty and uneasy reaction…

Quite - nay - very sad the demise of steam…and I agree with the narrator as regards the « evil smelly box » that was diesel…

Highly enjoyable documentary with a beautifully spoken commentary by Mr Coleman. such a pleasant change these days to not having the ears offended by vulgar inarticulate voice-overs

The class 40 shown departing the station at 26:10 is D326, the locomotive involved in the Great Train Robbery.

Clapham Junction - busiest station in Europe for number of trains passing through, whether stopping or express. However Tokyo Shinjuku is the busiest in the World. Shinjuku station today sees around 3.1 Million passengers per DAY. Or more than all London terminals for a week !
There are 7 railway companies on five levels, using three gauges and three different electrical systems. This huge 31 platform station is connected by over 8 miles of underground passageways.
    Companies:
Japan Railways East (JRE) ex National Railway on 3ft 6in gauge. 1500v DC overhead.
Keio Railway: Tokyo Westwards to the mountains commuter network on 4ft 6in gauge & 1500v DC overhead.
Odakyu Railway: Tokyo south westwards commuter express network on 3ft 6in gauge & 1500v DC overhead.
Seibu Railway: Tokyo north westwards commuter express network also on 3ft 6in gauge & 1500v DC overhead.
Also three separate underground metro companies. One of which is 4ft 8.5in gauge. One uses 750v DC third rail. And the last is an unusual, railed Maglev line thought to use 4ft 8.5in gauge & 1200v DC powered, electro-magnetism.

better keep them well maintained. you never know when one day you might need the once more. coal you have plenty in- newcastle-, oil you might have to buy very expensively once Scotland gains independence. and with it the North Sea oil...

Best way to watch is "muted" - 99% of the amateur film was silent - the whole video is overdubbed - listen to the Deltics and 31s at Kings Cross for example, class 40 "whistler" overdub.
