Why We'll Never Have the Perfect Controller - Cheddar Explains

  • In the 30 years since the classic NES controller debuted, controller design has come a long way. Or has it? Controller designs aren’t only about ergonomics. They’re also sites of clashing philosophies, corporate rivalries, and the battle for the loyalties of elite players.

      Furthermore they probably never read and understood the paper they reference at 0:40. Because it's TOILET PAPER.
      I could elaborate, but it's evident that there are purely ergonomic considerations that the author of the paper doesn't understand but actual controller developers do. Wrong finger, wrong force reference, wrong design goals, and the paper concludes with presenting a "perfect" by-the-book controller that will break your thumb ligaments.

      Lul, the gamecube controller actually borders on being a bad controller. Its the beginning of the good design the xbone-controller would eventually have, but doesnt really hide the fact that the face buttons are a disaster, the stick feels uncomfortable, never mind the c-stick being a trainwreck and the general feel of holding a gamecube controller is not ideal.
      Lets face it: people who defend the gamecube controller are people who play smash. And somebody who trained smash since childhood probably will never change the controller, of fear of drifting away from the level they reached by training with it. But its telling that nintendos REAL controller, the pro controller, is pretty much an xbone controller. It may not be the perfect controller and god knows how much the battery industry paid microsoft to leave out battery packs, but in terms of design the best controller right now is theirs.

      @@jim-df7sx yeah, melee is the most intense game you can play with a controller, you end up with an average of 5 to 7 inputs per second. Starcraft players have more than that and thats why theres is such an issue with carpal tunnel and similar issues, more inputs, not faulty ergonmics. also these things are usually caused by poor hand health practices (no stretching, hours without breaks, unhealthy hand positions, pressing buttons needlessly hard or with needless effort)

    • @cmck362
      @cmck362 5 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      I believe they were hinting at the fact that controllers won't be completely ergonomic due to a few factors like preconceived notions of what a controller should look like, brand recognition, optimized performance, durability, and bulky internal parts.
      Basically you can't have it all and you have to prioritize what is important. For example the video says something like buttons should be further apart so they're more ergonomic, but they also bring up the fact that close buttons allow users to hit buttons faster. Ergonomics vs user performance. They had to choose one.

    • @hamizannaruto
      @hamizannaruto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Its a False title, but to answer your question, most likely because its literally impossible. There is not way to make a game controller that is perfect for every gamers while also being ergonomic. Someone like me dont find the offset analog to be comfortable, while others love it to death. (And thats why i have not departure from playstation). There is also some game that just not great for has a better controller layout, tho the only thing i can think of is smash bros, as gamecube controller are better for it.
      Not only that, the way you hold the controller can cause some issue too. Putting you hand close together, Extending your thumb to reach the analogue. Those can contribute to other things as well. Tweaks will be make, but making it perfect is not possible.
      Meanwhile, nintendo keep running away from being the most ergonomic controller ever made. Each controller they make are just getting worse for ergonomic, but im not complaining. They are the most creative one out there and i sure hell love their games.

    • @hamizannaruto
      @hamizannaruto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Vox3l-Gl1tch Yeah, that could work.
      I wonder if anyone gonna go into this route. and if someone does go, how well will it go, or it will fail like modular cellphone

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Remember also, that aside from the fact that people just have different preferences, they may also have a tendency to play different kinds of games which work better with different controller features.
      And, even factoring all of that in? People's hands are different sizes.
      What feels comfortable to someone with really large hands is going to be drastically different to what feels comfortable to someone with small hands.
      Your mass produced game controller has to somehow be fairly comfortable for nearly everyone.
      But 'sort of comfortable for everyone' is by definition 'probably not perfectly comfortable for anyone'
      Maybe this is why Xbox brought back the duke for a bit...
      It genuinely is a better controller for some people...
      But not for everyone...

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hamizannaruto It would be several orders of magnitude less complex and more cost effective than a modular cell phone. In fact it doesn't have to succeed on the same scale as the cost of entry into the market is much lower, it could be a viable niche, just like modified controllers are. Literally someone could start selling electronics kits with boards and connectors, and offer a selection of shell parts to 3D print yourself. Even with mass produced plastic kit parts, the cost of starting up such a business could be in tens of thousands. Modular phone has to cost about 50 million or so.
      One problem is vendor lock-in/lock-out. There are deliberate compatibility barriers in consoles to prevent you from making a third party controller, which manufacturers of counterfeits don't necessarily struggle with, but legitimate businesses trying to engineer something custom do. Controllers on PC are more of a niche, but are a sensible target.
      But failure is always an option!

      That Won Dude the adaptive control while good, is designed more for accessibility than ergonomics. Now with that being said to some one with disabilities could argue that it’s ergonomic for them. The problem with that argument is that people have different disabilities and needs. Therefore in this case there is no widely used set up other than the base adaptive controller.

It is only reasonable that the controllers did not meet the ergonomic standards as making them large enough for 95th percentile users is that making them that size and spacing them properly would most likely make the controller too large for most people to use comfortably. But yes, thumbs down for bad journalism.

    I have regularly used Atari, SNES, N64, DreamCast, XBOX, GameCube, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Xbox 360 was by far my favorite. The shape, the size, the weight, the durability, the feel, the layout, the ease of use were all there. It was as close to perfect as I could have asked for and would use it on any console today if I could. Atari was good for what it was: an early at-home console with limited power. The controller fit the games well mostly, and it performed well, but it did get annoying having one hand as a paperweight. SNES was also not bad, but didn't really ever seem too comfortable. N64 might have changed now that they explained the third prong, but the button layout is just so tough to get back into after playing more modern consoles. DreamCast was actually pretty good and my controllers have held up for roughly 20 years. A little bulky with small triggers and very short wires, a little flat as well, but overall definitely useable. XBOX controllers were always odd to me and seemed really massive compared to its counterparts out there. GameCube controllers were actually really sturdy and had a fantastic size and weight, but the button layout with 1 bumper, and the oddly shaped ABXY layout always threw me off, but better than XBOX. Wii was good for the games it had, but not really comparable to the others. PS3 is the first one with real gripes. The controller was light, but always creaked when I held it, making sounds like it was going to snap apart. The controller was also way too small for my hands, and it was extremely annoying to play with. Xbox 360 was beautiful (as mentioned above). Would use on any console if I could get it to work right. PS4 is a pretty well-balanced controller. I don't use much of the fancy features and the pad is overwhelmingly useless to me (not bad, just a non-factor), but the shape is great and it is much more durable than the PS3. Much more sturdy, but I do miss the left dialog stick at the top. Xbox One is a controller I can't use. It's too bulky, too spaced out, breaks incredibly easily. We had Xbox Ones and PS4s in college and the Xbox One would always have stuck or missing buttons and the dialog sticks would wear so much faster. For comparison, I rotate my PS4 controllers when I play by myself, and they still have the grip after being used in that same environment in college to now. The Switch controllers are definitely different and I like the mobility, but I'm not a huge fan of the controllers. They're too flat, big, and small at the same time. But, they're definitely useable and mobile, so there's a bit of a tradeoff.

      Driving and 3D platform games are dreadful with a keyboard, lack of gradual analog movement means constant readjustment with only binary inputs on the length of travel of the steering wheel or character in a game. Proper PC gamers keep an Xbox or Dual shock controller nearby for playing these games. Also many 2D platformer diehards would rather a flat dpad and buttons for faster button presses and transitions of movement, hence the many SNES USB controllers available.

      I certainly appreciate the physical form factor of the Xbox 360/One controllers when I use them at my boyfriend’s house, but these are usually with more simplistic games that don’t require much more than a primary and secondary button on the right thumb.
      The most noticeable issue with the ABXY pad is actually with the Nintendo Switch. I find myself often entering incorrect keystrokes in Smash because the pad doesn’t make clear to me which is the primary button.

      Depends on the game, a joystick is actually a lot better than WASD movement because of the varying sensitivity. Consoles are also beginning to make more sense these days, although they are still rubbish for RTS or really any strategy game. Hopefully the next generation of consoles don't limit inputs, a thriving 3rd party controller market would actually be pretty cool and eliminate all but the graphics issue (which, lets be honest, graphics are not improving that quickly anymore so it's becoming far less of an advantage for PC). Although they'd have to let us use a mouse if they ever wanted to absorb the PC gamer market, which will likely never happen because of the massive advantage it provides over a joystick for aiming.

    Here's my take: the old SEGA rocker dpads from Genesis 6-button and Saturn (same membranes, different plastic for the top piece) are the finest, most tactile and accurate pieces of engineering I've ever felt, and I have stayed up at night for the past 30 years wondering if anyone will ever take it upon themselves to make a magnetic version of it for added durability. If you could somehow retain the tactile feel of the membranes while making the input electromagnetic, that would be a close throw to perfection.
    Tactile Hall Effect technology could revolutionize all digital input such as bumpers and face buttons...but it may be a pipe dream to expect that to happen in my lifetime.
    Adding an additional C and Z button to the face buttons and not making them duplicates of L1 and R1 would be a godsend for Joy2Key remapping...Also, I have always wondered if there's a more efficient 6-button layout than the standard SEGA layout that could adapt the GameCube's ring approach to face buttons, just with an additional 2 buttons. Otherwise, the original Model 1 Genesis controller features an amazingly ergonomic shape for the 6-button layout, but only on the front. Adding the back of an Xbox shell to that would be awesome.
    After that, use the ergonomic shell of an Xbox 360 / Series S controller with interchangeable dpad and joystick modules so that you can choose which one goes into the prime spot where your thumb naturally lies.
    Hall effect triggers with internals similar to the Saturn 3D pad / Dreamcast but with the external appearance and ergonomic grip of a modern Xbox trigger. Featuring an option for analog or digital input.
    Those are just the bare fundamentals that I think would go into making the perfect controller...features like dedicated screenshotting and turbo buttons, etc are also great. Thoughts?

Did you know they failed to negotiate with Nvidea for constant reductions in price of the gpu as time went on (parts become cheaper to manufacture over time)? This gave them a fixed price for some components for all the xbox life. So when they made price cuts, they had to take a huge loss per unit.

    Back in the day joysticks were actually purposefully made less ergonomic to make games harder so that you could spend more money at the arcade. They did this by moving the stick to the left and putting the buttons buttons to the right since movement is usually the most important part of games especially at that time and it worked.

    A symmetrical layout makes sense for the two main styles of games, First/Third Person games, that focus on the two analogue sticks and the shoulder buttons, and Platformers/2D style games, that focus on the D-Pad and the face buttons.

    I personally like the Steam Controller the most, but I can see why people would absolutely hate it. Though There is one thing about it that has baffled me to how it actually works for me. The face buttons are in the same spot as one of the analog sticks from the Playstation controller would be and I honestly think that would be one of the most uncomfortable positions to have them. Then again the controller's ergonomics have your hands cupping the controller so they'er more on top of the controller than with the Xbox or Playstation contoller so this actually is very comfortable.
    Another great aspect of the controller is that it's completely programmable and the analog sliders at the top can be a variety of analog sticks or button inputs, I can actually have C-buttons with N64 emulation. Though there are some definite draw backs. The replacement for the D-pad, the left analog slider isn't as smooth as a regular D-Pad, though I prefer it over the Switch's face buttons. Also the basic analog setting for the sliders is pretty meh as well. It's much better if you use it as a mouse like joystick, a trackball essentially, as it's much more accurate for FPS games, still not as good as a mouse though.
    As for other current controllers.
    The PS4 controller isn't as comfortable to me as the PS3 controller, if anything I would like them to go back to the PS3 design with triggers similar to the Xbox controller and the hand grip of the PS4 controller, ditch the touchpad and light for the PS5.
    The Switch is fairly comfortable with the included Joycon controller holder, although it's a bit small, and if you buy the Satisfy grip for handheld mode it's fairly comfortable. I still haven't bought a pro controller because they're so expensive, but I'm sure it'll be comparable to the Xbox or PS4 controllers.
    I don't own an Xbox thanks to me owning a PC so I haven't had a chance to play with the Xbox One controller.
