      It’s not even like overall his writing quality has declined. His writing on it’s a sin, Nolly and years & years has been fantastic. This series has had such weak characterisation/ character development and really lacked that “human” dynamic you saw in roses family, for example. Which is so weird, cause that’s Russell’s bread and butter.

      Right !?! The Space Babies episode felt as silly as Partners in crime, but the rest..? I can only surmise that Disneys made him go so heavy handed on the non Doctor Who stuff. I could almost enjoy Dot and Bubble but it very much felt like I was watching a Black Mirror episode and I really dont like Black Mirror. I dont know what the other show Ncuti was filming that caused them to have to not use him in two episodes, but maybe dont debut your new Doctor, with a new parent company, with a new shorter episode order, with a new mandate to have scenes that are great to post on TikTok, when hes not available 100% of the time.

    Recall the Capaldi episode on Skaro? When the TARDIS is blown to smithereens, and then later re-assesmbled by the sonic sunglasses? Where was Sutekh for that duration?

    No... retconning the Doctor into only being a grandparent to a grown-up Susan, but never having had the lived experience of being an actual parent yet, meaning he's never known or raised his own children, undermines EVERY instance where The Doctor has mourned for his lost family destroyed by the time war, or when he's ever connected with someone based on his experience as a parent. That is not a good thing this episode did.
    Jesus, as recently as 5 episodes ago, The Doctor leveraged his role as a dad as a means to to reason with the AI in Boom ("Dad to dad, dust to dust!"). It's just so bloody careless to take that authentic part of The Doctor's character away and it weakens and hollows out every one of those past moments.
    No That is a terrible bit of vandalisation.

    • @321puca
      @321puca 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      To me, I think the implication of the scene (though maybe not implied good enough) is that the Doctor has met or even raised his own children, but he hasn't necessarily 'had' them yet, aka he does not know the mother, but he has played a role in their lives.

    • @Jamestopboy
      @Jamestopboy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn’t take it that way. I took it as a “as of 2024 he doesn’t have kids yet, because they’re born in the 49th century. But Susan is on his mind and he’s thinking about her, so he has a granddaughter but not kids yet… since chronologically as of 2024 they don’t exist yet.”

    • @captbuckyohare5585
      @captbuckyohare5585 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Jamestopboy I don't think that's it at all. It very much came across that he hadn't experienced having kids yet. Kate's question was "You've got a grand daughter. That means YOU'VE had kids" and his response was "No, not yet." He's talking about his experience and his progression through his own timeline. You can deduce this, because he's never qualified Susan in this way. Even when in times where she doesn't exist yet/anymore, he never added this weird extra qualification. I hate to make guesses as to why they did this, but maybe they want the Doctor to come across as younger and more relatable to that target, younger audience and maybe RTD thinks having him be a parent / grand parent or come across as an ancient being in a young man's body (a la Eleven) makes him less relatable? Which would be... incredibly dumb.

    Fans have been attacked by people from the show for not liking this series. I think one reason why is b/c they truly don't see how bad what they made was. Multiple people have said this felt like a first draft script. But maybe it wasn't. And they know all the even dumber ideas that they left on the cutting room floor. And thought their final idea for getting out of the stupid corner they'd written themselves into (ex. by hyping up Ruby's origins) was super clever.
    And they're mad that us fans don't see how "good" it was. But we don't know anything about the worse ideas they considered first. We only know what we were presented with.
    Ironically, RTD in a tweet (after his return was announced) lambasted the younger generation of writers for not loving TV and not knowing how to write for it. And just wanting to write to promote their representation agenda. Wow. Hypocrite much?

  • @Longshanks1690

    The biggest and most colossal mistake in this entire two parter is probably having Sutekh win because there's no way you can come back from that believably with the tools the Doctor currently has at his disposal, which leads to incredibly stupid solutions like a dog whistle and a fucking lead somehow defeating the last of the Osirians.
    If Sutekh was surviving through the TARDIS but also had become trapped by it so he's trying to break out of the time vortex to enter our world to kill everything, the options for solutions are more plentiful and gives you more room to manoeuvre, but as it is, "death + death = restoring all life" is just... silly.
    Either that, or this really needed to be a three parter at least because ending and then rebooting all life in the universe in less than an episode is just not believable when it requires beating such a famous villain like Sutekh. It makes the stakes feel non existent because we know everyone is coming back, it makes THE GOD OF DEATH feel non threatening because he was so easily undone and it makes the episode feel so rushed because of how a monumentally important event was undone so easily.
    Such a disappointing waste of potential.

    This entire series relied on lots of dialogue that told us what we should’ve been shown instead. I honestly hate the scenes in UNIT, I really do. I don’t care for any of those characters and no amount of reassurances from The Doctor that these people matter will make me believe that they do. They’re just there. Rose, why was she there? She’s not qualified or old enough to work at UNIT. Moreover, the big return reveal only works if a character is an established character we’ve already warmed to and like. I know nothing about Rose other than some branches of her family tree, her gender identity, and her tendency to boss others around. It doesn’t exactly scream “memorable”, does it? Kate is just a cardboard cutout who tells people what to do some of the time and spends the remaining screen time narrating what others are doing or asking redundant questions we don’t care to know the answer to.
    Also, you were exactly right. Ruby isn’t a legend and I wasn’t bothered about her origins. I was more confused about why RTD pushed this ‘best friend’ narrative so much between two people with absolutely no chemistry. Ruby is one-dimensional and her only redeeming quality is that’s well-dressed, I suppose.

A special used to pull in 1.8 mill, now it only pulls in around a quarter of a mill(In box office£). To claim the longest running show on air which had a global audience before disney who was never good is insane.
      Whilst the disney star wars trilogy was originally successful, it's still lost Disney billions because the revenue has not covered the costs, the latest couple of films, "Solo" and "The Acolyte" have been absolute failures which have lost the company money and reputation regardless of the fact they had a much smaller budget than previous films and got a free £50 mill grant from the UK government.

      It's RTD's go to. He doesn't seem capable of writing a season finale that doesn't constantly ramp up the scale of disaster - world ending, universe ending, time ending - only for every bit of destruction wrought during the episode to be undone in the final minutes. The moment we saw Ruby's mum dying, and Kate and UNIT dying, I knew that there'd be a time reversal at the end and everyone would be restored. So there was instantly no threat or drama.

    I think you were a bit harsh when critiquing Pyramids of Mars. Most consider it a really good story and there are high stakes with a lot of side characters dieing and I think it’s good. The set and death scenes looks under par because it’s 1970 I guess. I tend to avoid criticising set design and special effects in classic who.
    Legend was good at setting up and I thought it was entertaining and intense towards the end with the reveal of Suteck and Mel had something to do for once but Empire of death was a total let down and undid a lot of positives of legend. They hyped up the mother in the time window scene and the reveal of the black cloud over the tardis was interesting(it did build up my expectations about the big baddie and the mum. I thought she was a part of Suteck’s plans somehow initially) but it did feel quite underwhelming when it was just a random woman, when Russel was hyping it up so much. Also, how does 73 yards tie into all of this? It’s still unclear. How is he going to tie up all the plot holes left in one episode that Moffat is writing( I think RTD said that all mysteries will be wrapped up in s1.)
    You were quite nit picky at times, I think eg: criticising Susan’s Theresa May walk and saying who cares, I thought it was a funny moment personally despite it being 5 years ago.
    Overall I agree with most of your opinions except for Legend.
    Space babies 1/10
    Devils chord: 3/10
    Boom: 8/10
    73 yards: 8/10

      Each to their own of course, but I don't know how you could give 73 Yards 8, especially when it leaves so much un answered. Then in the finale the Doctor talks about Apgwilliam or whatever his name is, ... but according to 73 Yards, Ruby stopped him so he was never even a big thing. Where as in this episode, the Doctor says he stopped him. ... Make it make sense. Don't get me wrong, I kind of enjoyed 73 Yards, and if it had been a stand alone fear story, I would have enjoyed it more. I don't know if you know these refferences, but I got major Fear On Four or Man In Black vibes from it. I'm a bit of a radio geek. :) As a one off story like that, it was great, and the horror elements were really well done. But as part of this season and how it's all supposed to tie in together, it just frustrated me. Like, are we supposed to think that Ruby never did stop Mad Jack, because she never broke the circle? Or are we supposed to think that it's a paradox, so there was a version or time line for her where she did stop him, but she just can't remember? ... Seriously, I just don't get it.
      I'm not trying to be an arse, I'm genuinely trying to understand it. I would entertain the possibility that Russell is just way too clever and I don't get it. But look at the pay off for this finale. The whole Ruby's mother thing. What was the significance of any of that? I'm baffled.

    • @danielking1583
      @danielking1583 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I enjoyed it as a stand-alone episode but at the time I assumed he will answer those questions. Maybe they will be answered in the Christmas special(although it’s unlikely maybe season 2.)
      I have seen theories that the circle was established by a creature called the Fae and when the doctor stepped on the circle he disappeared but ruby had a less severe punishment. There’s a lot more to the theory and I think on Reddit they go into a lot of detail but I agree the way they tied it in finale wasn’t good.
      Personally, I did enjoy that episode but I assumed we will get answers and maybe we will someday.

It feels performative, and stuck in the past - like a bad guy you can keep dunking on to distract from actual social issues. I'm not completely convinced of that because RTD is good in other areas, specifically for the marginalized communities he's a part of, but money tends to make you out of touch and that's what I get from him these days, that he's out of touch.

      This is the problem of the "anti-woke" versus "woke" narrative is the "anti-woke" side are led to believe the "woke" side are leftist, but they're not; the whole point of "wokeness" is to draw people away from any effective leftiness, and to make a superficial distinctions of what are the definitive differences between "right" and "left". If "woke" was truly leftist it would not be endorsed by the likes of Black Rock, Raytheon, Walmart, Amazon and so forth. But not only does it decoy those who identify as "left" (for whom failure to conform and comply is labelled as "right" to keep them in control) whereas for those who are "anti-woke" labelling it as leftist further alienates and demonises actual leftism.

      I mean I don't think the Theresa May thing is anything to read into other than a light hearted joke/parody.
      I also feel with episodes he's written this season (such as Dot & Bubble) alongside shows like "Years and Years" and "It's a Sin" he does show a keen awareness of politcal issues so I wouldn't say he isn't aware.
      I do think though that he knows that as a writer his characters don't need to share his politcal beliefs and he seems much more interested in exploring the sociology around politics in his writing than hammering home any specific politics.
      I like when he takes the above the approach. That being said you can also see when he's just gone "I'm including because I feel I should include this" too.

    With the Unit comeback - I was suprised that basically almost no member of Unit, beside Kate and Mel were back. Like did the wheelchair gal die or quit after the whole Toymaker plotline?
    1:11 I probably would have started with Ruby's plotline - and after failed Time Window situation, we could have Mel mention S Triad event happening right now, which with Doctor getting interested - they would notice Susan Triad. Which would start connecting both plotlines in a simpler more streamlined way.
    1:25 Yeah, that was kinda effed up. If we gonna move to Disney, give us the proper 10 episodes, with all those cool variants.
    4:10 Sorry to stop you - but Rose just shouldn't have been in this episode. Like, if we had those two more episodes with Susan Triad - then maybe we could squeeze her there and have proper dialogue for her. In this two parter, she literally stood there with a tablet. It's just disrespectful to us and the actress. The smart 13th years old could stay - cause he seemingly took over the wheelchair girl's spot and if we gonna have representation - then let's have it this way.
    4:40 In general I would say - aside Rose - all actresses in those episodes carried the whole thing (and in her case I blame the script). Mel was fully giving Doctor, when she was shaming him or when she saved him on a bike and Ruby was once again the centre of if all, always in the character. And then Kate and Sundays only are getting better with each episode. Harriet was really playing it nicely as the Sutekh follower and Susan already have shown us nice range through this whole season. Like give them better script and let's go!
    5:50 To be honest - I was fully expecting the Time Lord watch reveal here.
    6:40 Can we talk for a minute about Time Window? Cause that was really cool idea, instead of going the classic NCIS, "we have extra zoom" ability.
    7:10 Tbh - this is mostly a build up for the Christmas I guess. Which - to be fair I am genuinely hyped now. Mrs. Floods have been fun character and the interactions with Cherry are always top notch.
    10:30 To be fair - Mel was working there with Susan.
    22:55 That delivery kinda killed the episode for me. In general Ncuti really has been throwing this season off for me. And it's not like he doesn't have good moments or doesn't feel like a Doctor. It's just the lines and some delivery is ridiculous or flat... As if it all was filmed on different days and only he couldn't bring the same energy between the scenes or something...
    23:35 Tbh, I am not bothered much with him being there for so long time. The memes are good.
    24:55 Probably curiosity and boredom. Like imagine ending the world, but you never get to know that one secret.
    32:55 I think the whistle is a reference to the classic era? At least that's what people have been telling me, lol.
    35:10 Her being ordinary was also kinda a callback to Bill and her mother. The story and legend of her became powerful through faith, which is fitting when we are dealing with interdimensional gods. Also she gave suprisingly nice performance for such small role - like the whole Ruby reunion scene was one of the better parts of this season.

    The fact that he said that she is shrouded in a cloak because time itself shrouded her but that she had to be for the sake of the story really doesn't make sense. The whole Sutekh stuff just falls apart when RTD says he was on since the 4th Doctor's era because of the amount of times he really should have got off by then. The fact it was a human woman and not actually someone interesting makes the Devil's Chord age badly. I literally thought when they found out who it was they had managed to retrieve the data from the broken monitor, so now realising it was just UNIT's systems didn't help the whole database thing from earlier and felt contrived.

    I disagree about children in future and granddaughter in past, it's just stupid idea and clearly wrong cause the Doctor mentioned lots of times being a Dad even in this season.
    Like wasn't the timeless child and bigeneration enough we had to mess up the doctor's history even more

    What they should've done with the TARDIS is keep the groans but make it somewhat lose power as it happens, making it look like something is slowly killing the TARDIS.
    In The Devils Chord, they could've looked as the TARDIS was groaning and seeing the lights flickering as if it's losing power. That would have looked very cool as The Doctor and Rogue are inside it during Rogue, it groans and the lights start going out and flickering.
    They could've done the same in The Legend of Ruby Sunday, having the TARDIS lights flickering as it groans and Sutekh appears.

    Think my biggest issue with the reveal of Ruby’s mother isn’t the fact she’s a regular person but rather the explanation and quite frankly middle finger to the audience of “you gave it significance.” No, it’s been written through the series rather haphazardly to give significance by the writer and to have that be the explanation is a joke

    • @PeterCamberwick
      @PeterCamberwick 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah exactly. RTD makes his own characters ask what the point of these stupid plot lines is, then makes the Doctor explain them. Russell, just because you have your characters explain how dumb it is, that doesn't make it any less dumb. LOL. It really is pityful.

    i think the reason it snows whenever ruby feels the strong emotions is the same reason sutekh was able to use that field thingy, whatever they said it was to push out clones of susan, if a god is using whatever it was to literally will things into creation, maybe ruby as a passenger of the tardis could do the same, they said a big thing was the importance they gave to rubys mother, no matter how ordinary she actually is, so that level of importance plus the strength of the emotions, could mean ruby created snow the same way sutekh created triad clones

    at the end of the giggle we learn that 14 took rose to mars. MARS. this would have been the perfect *actual* moment for sutekh to hold onto the tardis. it would make sense that, because 14 and 15 are the same doctor just at different points of their timeline, the same would apply to the "cloned" tardis, meaning it's reasonable to assume that the moment he clung onto 14's tardis, he was also attached to 15's tardis.

    You know I was willing to overlook a lot of the more.... goofy elements of this series as teething issues, and I genuinely did really enjoy eps like Boom and 73 Yards. But damn, I'm annoyed at how disappointing these last 2 episodes were. After 5 years of chibnall i thought there was a light at the end of the tunnel but it seems that was just a train coming from the other direction. Hopefully next series will have a more satisfying conclusion :/
