    We keep an expanded CB in the shack with my amateur radio gear. We also have an expanded one in the vehicle, but decided against carrying CB HT's feeling such monies would be better spent on digital VHF/UHF HT's. The later will expand our data capability and better keep communications from prying eyes. Field personnel can always be contacted via VHF/UHF comms regarding necessary CB traffic/information.

    Actually the Dutch marines use M81 woodland.

    You mention privacy codes/ctcss tones. It's important for people to understand that others can still hear your conversation. What tones do is YOUR radio won't break squelch and receive a signal unless the other person's radio is transmitting that correct matching tone. Anybody listening who has their tone settings off can hear everything.

    I get 12-15 mile range with my home base station to vehicle radio. Midland makes a great hand held that you can also use in a vehicle, hooking up to the vehicle lighter and external antenna. When skip is rolling, I've talked to folks in Vermont (I'm in northern Wisconsin). Also hear French speakers often. Guessing from Quebec.

      Yeah but it's hard to impossible to mod from what I heard for freeband so you're stuck on the normal 40 frequencies which are junk and only Stupids use.

    The regular 40 channels suck and are only used by idiots. I really like this CB58 you mention and from what little I could find it seems like I can set it to have channels above the regular in the 27.600 range. Is all it takes a menu setting? No complicated soldering or opening up?

    • @jdolio
      @jdolio  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All it takes is a menu setting. Or you can alter the file as well, no soldering.

      @@jdolio Ah hell yeah finally. Just what CB needed. Before the only option for freebanding was paying lots of money for a export/10 meter 'HAME' rig or paint in the rear physical mods. At this price and features this is a game changer, FM is really helpful but ultimately to get better range out of the CB handhelds is to freeband.

    Already watched the video and was thinking about it, when something struck me. Those little boxes that plug in between two baofengs and turn them into a crossband repeater, what about doing that with one baofeng and one of these CB ht’s? You could be set up near-ish the repeater with the baofeng, and have more removed individuals using the CB from greater distance. Or carry two HT’s (a VHF/UHF & a CB) and a time/frequency table, for a super janky and ghetto “spread spectrum” system. One radio for TX and the other for RX? I’m new to all this and not a ham, so I’m sure there’s something wrong w these ideas. Maybe ask NC Scout?

    • @cantaffordtodie
      @cantaffordtodie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would be illegal. you may not cross repeat cb radio over any other service.

    I’m really curious what those Dutch channels are in terms of frequency range.
    Cause this sounds like a frequency area that most folks aren’t going to use. (For emergencies only of course)
    Security through obscurity. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I want to get into the basics of radios, but I dont even know what a band is or what is the importance of the different bands. Is there a book / guide / channel where somebody like me can get the basic info. Thanks. (I am in South Africa)

    • @Foobarski
      @Foobarski ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A radio channel is the frequency you are transmitting on, as an example lets say 27.233 MHz. You will not just be transmitting on 27.233 MHz, but maybe from 27.232 MHz to 27.234 MHz given you are bandwidth of 27.234 - 27.232 = 0.002 MHz. A collection of channels located next to each other is called a band.
      Another example: If you look at an ordinary FM radio. Those that receives ordinary broadcast radio. FM radio receives a signal somewhere between 88 MHz and 108 MHz (in Europe, maybe US is different). That 88 to 108 MHz is the radio band.

      Ham Radio Crash Course is a youtube page that would help you a lot and refer to many other helpful pages. The Tech Prepper has a manpack radio series that may be particularly helpful in African nations depending on what you need to do. LoRa nodes are also interesting for Africans because of their range, price, electricity use, and capabilities. Do you have any goals? If you start with a goal in mind I can recommend you things to give your effort a result in addition the the basic knowledge you gain with your first project.
