Landscape Fabric | Mulch | Penstemon // Garden Answer

  • Good morning! I got a few projects done outside yesterday- some of them were the type of things that you keep 'meaning to do', but keep putting off for some reason. It felt so good! I'm loving the new look my front urns now have, and the new mulch in the Versailles garden makes everything look so complete. It's been a touch cooler the past couple days and it makes me so much more motivated to get things done. Yay! Hope you all have a great day, and thanks for watching! 😃 ~Laura

I understand the frustration, hence the use of the landscape fabric. Felt the same, and put landscape fabric down in a few new beds years ago. It was a new bed, and plants were new too, not established like yours. Maybe two years later, I was adding plants, digging through the fabric, and I noticed that the older plants had roots that were growing on top of and through the fabric, not down into the ground, when I pulled some of it up, I noticed a grey tinge to the ground, with small furrows across all of the ground. It looked so unhealthy, that I felt I had to pull it up, just for the health of the older plants, and for the existing soil. What a job, because there was two years worth of mulch on top. As I pulled it up, the ground continued to show the same results. So, I have now resorted to cardboard, even though it is far from permanent. It degrades, yes, but that is a very good thing for the soil. Replacing it every two years may be a chore, but as my garden matures, I have less to cover and I have become much better at it. The soil is healthy with lots of worms, and no weeds when covered with cardboard. So, I am not a fan of landscape fabric, but your experiences are far greater than mine, so much good luck with it.

Wildflower wind I agree, this is a lot of hard work. I used to spend many hours a day in my yard when I was in my twenties but then I had kids and got away from it for awhile. My kids are older now and I have more time to myself so I thought I would start spending that time outside in the flower beds but my body is not used to all this physical work. There is a definite difference in what I was capable of in my twenties and what I am capable of in my forties, I am really sore. lol These videos are a great motivation for me and I really appreciate being able to put them on in the morning to get moving and at the same time I'm learning so much about gardening that I did not know in my earlier years. I just love these videos!

I love watching your videos so much. Thanks for the weed fabric tip. I know there are weed fabric haters but this stuff is amazing. Weeds are ruining my life right now since we just built our house last year. We had a lot of bare dirt and a very wet spring so the weeds are out of control and have taken so much time to deal with. I can’t wait until I have weed fabric down, drip line installed and the areas mulched! It will be amazing!!!

Hey! That pentsemon plant looks really cool! I'd never heard of it till you mentioned it in this video. Very nice! I'm learning from you, that we can plant all summer long, and change things up as needed, which is great. I normally plant in late spring, early summer, then water and weed and necessary. I think this will mean more trips to the greenhouse, yeah! As always, great video!

I had the same block in our last home from the previous owner and it was lined up just like yours. It's great for retaining walls but not so hot for edging. We did not have money to spend so I just turned them to face up and with "new" flat sides I was able to put the weed cloth right up to it and helped to keeps the weeds from sneaking out. I loved the way it looked with the roughness of the block facing up, it made it look kind of like stone. The Con to the project is you have to dig kind of a deep trench to set them in place. So just a thought and maybe it could work for you too. Keep up the great videos!

Eeek, bindweed! I actually dug over one of my gardens two years ago to get out every bit of bindweed root! It's about 12x10 and has our blueberry bushes in it. I removed everything else and did war against the bindweed. It was labor intensive but worth it.

As a gardener I love your videos, but I am super against landscape fabric for keeping weeds down. Once a weed seed lands on top of the landscape fabric that's it, the weeds' roots will be so entrenched in the fabric they will be impossible to take out. I'd love to hear your response to this!
Thank you very much for all your videos and all your information!

I can tell you don't have trouble with deer due to the hostas looking so beautiful. Try this with really hard weeds I take a water bottle and fill with Round Up and put the stems into the bottle and just wait. The weeds drink in the Round Up and die. I know it takes time and many water bottles but it works. So happy about the baby.

My experience from living in the deep south where rain and heat and humidity and weeds are rampant every year, is that landscape fabric is usually a waste of money and effort in putting it down. And here's why: When putting mulch on top of the fabric, eventually weed seeds germinate in the mulch and grow on top of the fabric, defeating the purpose of the fabric all together. And weeds will even come up occasionally from under the fabric. And it is so aggravating to be working on someones flower bed and try to dig a hole for a new plant when I find there is fabric underneath the mulch to cut through and deal with. What works best for me is to put down a think layer of pine straw (baled pine needles) on a flower bed. This chokes out all weeds and grass, with the rare exception that can be pulled or sprayed. It should be replenished every 6 months by just throwing a little new pinestraw on top of the old. It will be thick at first, but will settle down to an acceptable thickness in a week or two, and if you don't like the look of pine straw for mulch, you can top it off with a layer of the mulch that you prefer. The only way I would ever suggest using fabric would be if the situation is one like a you-pick tomato location, where the fabric would be put down on the tomato rows and left exposed, where no top mulch is needed. In this case, fabric can work very well. Having said all of this, the situation for weed control in other parts of the country may be different than where I live, and the landscape fabric usage may be more feasible than it is down here in the panhandle of Florida. . . One day, I would like for you to make a vid of all that you maintain, and how you do it and hold down a job at your nursery. Maybe sharing with us a schedule of your work at home from day to day, or letting us know if you have help with the vast flower beds to do it all, etc. Your videos are awesome and keep up the good work.

Congratulations on you're pregnancy. As you begin to show more it may become a little more difficult to get up and down sitting on the ground and suggest a push cart. I went to a "vintage store" and found an awesome push cart for my gardening and really enjoy it and only paid $15, for it. It was light brown so painted it, attached a couple of kitchen rods, and a tool rack and mounted them for hanging my tool items, gloves, and on the bottom carry all of my soil items etc. I think you would love it and can make a video putting it together.
