Dude just wanted to say you have been an inspiration for change in my life. I remember watching your rebuild series on the ZX1400 and that made me go back to college to learn motorcycle mechanics and now three years later I have just purchase two motorbikes from auction to repair and sell on. I know this is just a passion of yours and you do it for the fun, but you should know that you have helped a young guy find his passion in life as well. Many thanks HeroRR :)
Wow that's wonderful to hear. Good luck on your career my friend!
Start a TH-cam Channel..
My college was if we didn’t fix our own bikes we didn’t ride. Follow your dreams buddy
Whew, this hit home hard man. I was a mechanic in the army for 9 years. Got out, did tractor trailers work, don't like it, did land rovers, that's pretty decent, thinking about doing motorcycles. My buddy just gave (yes gave) me a 2003 vfr800. I'm gonna restore it and see how I like working motorcycle and riding 2 wheels again. I have a feeling this may lead into something I love.
@@benfrank1583 I’ve done plenty of heavy equipment and trucks also, bikes are a Breeze to work on in comparison and a lot more fun. Once you establish a good reputation people will stick with you because bikes are their toys and they won’t trust just anybody. I wish you the best of luck and success, I’d love to open a small shop as well. I plan on doing mostly restorations, they are the most fun and you’ll learn a lot.
It always warms my heart to see people bring old bikes back to life and keep them running.
My '98 VFR had sat a while under previous ownership, and the brake fluid was so gunked up that, even after thorough bleeding, there was some crap in the secondary master cylinder that blocked a check valve, leading to the rear brake dragging hard on the disc and overheating it on a short ride.
It took me a while to figure that problem out, figured I'd share in case it helps you avoid an issue with this build.
Also, you probably know about various avenues to de-link the brakes. I ended up keeping the link and getting Galfer stainless lines, but if I did it over again, I might go with Superhawk fork lowers, and F4i rear brake. There's lots of options, and the linked brakes are pretty nice most of the time.
Long time fan, was stoked to see you got a 5th gen! Can't wait to see the rest of the build!
I got my 99 a few years ago after watching your vfr video, it was almost all original and in excellent condition with only 10k miles, I had it for $1900. Since then the bike price has risen quite a bit. It’s still in my garage with other 10ish bikes came and went.
When swapping the rear-shock for a new Yss on my 1997 Vfr750f, the collector or pipes didn’t need to be removed. The Centre-stand also stayed in place.
The swinging arm nuts were loosened- moved roughly 8cm rearwards which gave enough clearance to remove the old shock and whizz the new one in.
A special tool was needed to loosen the swing-arm holder which went onto a half-inch ratchet. Buying that part saves masses of time and is worth every penny (or cent).
Next time use a brush when you vacuum but first cover the holes of course, better job!
I live in France, looking for this bike, and really appreciate your videos, thanks 😃😃
I bought my 929rr and 954rr after watching your build series years ago. Still have the 929rr and love it. love to see the bikes coming back to life and all the cleaning details.
Old man tip: When an engine sits that long, it's smart to lubricate the cylinder walls before cranking it and crank it by hand first with new oil in it. There is rust in there. 🥷
Hey Hero, progress. The bike looks fantastic at the heart of it. They say patience is a virtue and you have bucket loads of it. I would have gladly kept watching so don’t be shy with the length of the video. Looking forward to the next one mate.
Dude, you should get the NKG iridium spark plugs for the VFR. Even Honda recommends them. Runs a little bit better and needs less fuel. Pay for them self.
For the VFRs, Honda kept the RC30 single sided swingarm, but moved the exhaust to the "wrong" side!
With you there on the aesthetics of a left mounted exhaust. Tyga makes a left mounted exhaust for the RC36 and it looks absolutely killer. The downside is that it requires you to remove the center stand, and I'm sure that's the reason why Honda switched to a right exit exhaust for the street bikes.
I have the same bike. Absolutely love it. Looking forward to the rest of the restoration! She deserves it!
Great to see you rescuing this bike, I had a 2000 VFR great bike. While your working around the throttle bodies check the linkage, mine where sticking really bad! I thought it was the cables so I replaced them, but didn't solve the problem. Ended being the throttle linkage sticking. Keep up the great work dude.
slowly getting there, remember to clean the starter valves properly when you get to them, i had big issues with power de4livery on mine up till they were cleaned
Enjoyed part 1 so I was looking forward to this one. Like this series 👌🏼looking forward to the next one!
Fill the tank all the way with white vinegar (food grade) and let sit for 3-5 days the results will blow your mind
Haha, The coolant cap snapped in half on mine. Also the oil cooler line in and out cracked when I removed it to change plugs. Found that out after it was all put back together
Awesome project!!!
Dude you're making me miss my '95 so badly... I DM'ed you on instagram a few years ago about getting one as my first streetbike and I got one. I miss VFR's a lot and I think I will get another one eventually.
A VFR will always be a good choice
Me and a buddy just found a 2000 vfr800 at Barber vintage fest for 1600 with a clean title! It’s rc51 tail swapped and the tank and fuel pump looked identical to this, save that it was crystallized. It ran on day two though. Awesome having you to follow along with as we do the same rebuild.
Cheers dude gaving ussues with my gen 5 new exhaust really abd it stopped cranking over. Poss just battery job . Going to make repairs put her back on the road.
Solid progress man. Well done!
Next bike to restore should be a blackbird !
Second that!
Awesome stuff, I love your content, I hope your teeth liked all the grime on the toothbrush 😂😂
Hey, just a word of advice CHANGE THE RUSTY OIL LINES TO THE OIL COOLER
I had rusty ones and they sprang a pinhole leak. I caught it in the garage, but you really dont want that on the road near your wheels.
@@Lorin-GabrielLeaua-fm1lw what if oil flows out over the front wheel.....then the rear....
This may be my inspiration to start to do something...keep going and thanks!
15:34 To think someone will miss the humor and believe those words! 😅
Keep this series going on brother....love the videos as always
Thank you!
Doing mechanics work in clothes you care about wasn't the smartest move, I hope the shirt comes out clean after a wash!
Nope! It's ok though, I got a new rag out of the deal haha
HooptieDoodle is also restoring a vfr of the same era. Might be worth checking out also. I know he made his own PAIR block off plates
the inside of the tank is actually really nice tho not too much rust
Awesome video series. Cant wait for more
Awesome video guy! I enjoy watching EACH one of these (despite how disgusting some of your fluids have been!!! Lol.) Just a quick FYI...........You should always use some anti-seize on the threads of your plugs! I've been doing it for years, and hasn't let me down! Can't wait for the next video on this build! : >)
Looks like I missed the first episode. I have a 98.Thanks for saving her.
It's an aftermarket slip on though, can't really blame it on Honda.
Otherwise, great content.
Mine's got a high mounted exhaust and i still have to take it off to take the wheel off.
oem is the same way.
@@HeroRR wow, in that case this is terrible design. Negates a major benefit of single sided swingarms imo.
Why you doing mechanic work in a brand new shirt though 😂
I just went out to check something and then one thing led to another and suddenly im pulling a dirty fuel pump. lmao
@@HeroRR lol okay been there but when I first saw the video thought it was planned.
Nice job bro 👏 as always
Quantum Industries makes a fuel pump for the vfr800fi.
Throw every hose, every fucked up plastic. Flush every liquid every oil. Change the chain, brake pads, brake hoses, fluid reservoirs. Rebuild fork and calipers. Change tyres. Change front and back sprockets. Repaint fairings, repaint chassis and the engine. Rewire the entire electrical system. Clean up throttle body’s. And use the bike for another 50 years
KEEP GOING ON YOU CRACK!!!!! I WISH I COULD HAVE JUST THE MIDLE OF YOUR ´´MECHANIC KNOWLEDGE´´...
Remember if it’s cbs brakes one piston in each calliper is operating from the other end lever/pedal
I laughed so hard at the "I don't know why I'm even trying to save this fuel pump"
Sometimes we can't help ourselves we believe everything can be saved. Well not me I'm lazy I'd buy a new part before bothering to save something. Because I think like well it's half dead it might die shortly down the line so I'll replace it instead as I don't want to do all this again.
Looks like the entire fuel system WILL be gunked up with rusted particles, upto & inside of the injectors..!!
Luckily most/all of the rubber pipework can be replaced, and that pump filter combo too!!... ...by all that is mechanically driven, that pump system must go to the scrapyard in the sky for recycling & smelting down ASAP !!
Love your video's!
Geez, how long was that bike sitting to have the gas sludge up like that?
Yes, that exhaust is always in the way from what should be an easy rear wheel change, grrr. Anyone know if there is a trick to remove the wheel without having to remove the exhaust can?
Kamera je super ❤ale 🤔👍👍
Please 🙏 make a nice justice videos to VFR 1200 F
Hi 👋
Witch setup u use for videos ?
Didn't this gen of VFR come with the CBS combined brakes? That could be why those pistons on the rear caliper didn't move, the front brakes had yo be pulled.
Yeah the brakes are linked, the 2 smaller outside pistons are the rear operated ones and the larger center one is from the front. Cracking the bleeder valve allowed me to push everything in nice and easy.
HeroRYOKED am i right? you have some pretty good vascularity.
Wow, I didn't know you look at men this way. ;-)
Looks like your blinkers have the same issue as mine. The left side works, the right side, the relay clicks really fast with no light, then the light comes on after a few seconds.
Id bet this gets worse with colder weather, mine does. I have yet to find a fix for this problem. If you do please post about it. There is not a lot of concrete information out there.
I'm going to 100% sort it out, don't worry! I'll probably include that in a future video :)
Did`t VFR had original exaust beneath the rear?
different years different pipes. latter were under
Those compression test results are a little troubling. 5% variability between cylinders is perfect, 10% is acceptable. You had a 165 psi and a 200 psi result, that's almost a 20% difference.
I think the reason was because the battery wasn't fully charged when I tested the first cylinder. Off camera I charged the battery and did the rest. I believe that's why we see the variation. Maybe i'll go back and re-test that first cylinder.
@@HeroRR A cylinder leakage test will also provide really accurate cylinder health results.
Old bikes ehh!!
What causes this? Ethanol?
my bike just got stolen 2 days ago and im really sad
u
What song is the outro?
How long did it sit for damn
over 5-6 years
Started this with a new shirt, huh
Most efficient way to obtain new rags.
23 min isn't long bro
This wasn’t covered I take it?
Something like an ultrasonic cleaner may help that pump.
This is what happens when you wear something new..
how was this shit even working lol
This bikes a piece of junk…
