I finally went to see the Isle of Man TT this summer with my dad. While everyone was riding CBR1000 RR-Rs, S1000 RRs and R1s, this rider called Michael Rutter was racing on a RC213V-S and the sound was just deafening compared to all other bikes. When he flied by at nearly 200 mph on the public streets, even with your eyes closed you could absolutely tell who it was. It really added to the whole experience.

The Padgett Honda race team is a testament to the determination of Mr Clive Padgett and his investment in Honda Racing Corporation in the UK. Michael Rutter has the skills and experience to race on the Mountain course so let us hear what it would be like if the TT was still a GP round as it once was.

not one of... THE best. only one who has always been the most reliable, and if not the fastest, at least usually competetive. still being innovative. there have been faster bikes, but all around, they're it. i mean, the goldwing is the standard for touring. the cb750 gave birth to sport bikes, vfr 750 best street bike ever. rc51, the blackbird, on and on. and those are just street bikes. XR400, XRR, 250R, how many people's first ride was on a honda? and they KEPT riding, because every time it just works instead of ride once, then spend weeks or longer wrenching. mine was our little honda 70 fourtrax when i was 2. i love kawis and ducatis, and i can appreciate other bikes but those are basically the only others i'd buy. and even then, pretty much only in addition to my hondas though. and they have something for everybody. every niche, every rider level. or they did, at least. still, probably more than any other single manufacturer. just the fact that when they finally built a side by side, they didn't just stick with the status que, and go with a stupid cvt belt. which is just one of the many reasons i hate side by sides. but if i had 30k just laying around, i'd maybe get one. but i'd probably just build a rail buggy. but still... that's the market, people don't buy quads anymore, they like the false sense of security of a little 1 inch tubing roll cage... so honda builds what sells, but even then, the give it a dct. you can get a honda wave runner, and tow it with a goldwing easily, or a honda automobile. if you choose, you can have a honda for any and every occasion, other than heavier hauling... and they're all reliable. then, use your honda generator, clean them all with your honda pressure washer. and again, they all just work, basically always. doesn't matter how fast you are, to finish first, you must first finish. i only wish they'd bring back some of the older legends.

Just to illuminate something you mentioned-
The GP engines use pneumatic valve "springs", which would be too impractical and expensive for a street bike. The -S uses more familiar metal valve springs, which are probably some very nice, expensive hi-test Voodoo alloy items.
I'm an American, so if I could afford one, I'd get the gelded version.
I'd still buy it. Honda is being actually quite sensible, and I'm sure no insult is intended by halving the BHP.
You see, Les États-Unis is a rarity among the many nations on our little planet. It does not employ a stepped Motorcycle licensing sytem, where you are limited in engine capacity at first to, say, 250cc. If you do fine with that, next you are allowed 400cc, then 600...you see what I'm getting at? Someone with riding experience and skill at zero can theoretically own a RC213V-S, Desmosedici RR, etc. Or even any modern 600cc I-4 sport bike, for that matter. In practice, there are, thank God, some barriers to beginners getting a hold of something possibly lethal to them, but it happens. Honda knows this, and are being very wise and responsible, Japan has Very Strict tiered motorcycle licensing, and they don't hurry things. An interesting result is that 400cc bikes are a pretty vital little class there, and there have been some cool bikes, like Honda's very own NC-45, with a tiny 400cc V4 (with geared cam drive), and🐣 was basically an RC-45 that been hit with the Shrink-O Ray. But I'm careening off the subject a bit.
The RC213V-S is as awesome as it is possible for a Motorcycle to be. I hope they get ridden by people with the skills and experience to engage the machine confidently. I hope they get ridden. There's nothing worse for s vehice of any kind that was made to be in motion than for it to become immobile. It would be sad if in the future there's all these Honda RC213V-Ss that run like sh*t because they just sat
One more thing, then that's it, I promise.
I totally♥️the classic Honda Racing Corporation Red, Blue and White colours.
Edit: As someone kindly pointed out, the 400cc V4 bike is NC35, not NC45. My apologies.

The replacement parts are expensive, not bc they are rare, but bc the person spending $185k, will defintely spend $15k for the power upgrade, and therefore find themselves needing expensive replacement parts when it's chucked on public roads. For those buying it for the track-only...good for you. For those who thought they'd use this on public roads...good luck! @mylexicon2 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

In my opinion, it's also important to mention the role MotoGP played in Honda's decision to make the RC213V-S. At the time Honda conceived the bike, MotoGP was experimenting with the CRT (claiming rule team) and Open Class concepts. The privateers of that era were using poorly tuned Superbike engines, and spending considerable money to prototype a chassis for their machines. Honda examined the situation for private teams, and determined that HRC could sell the privateer teams a better bike at lower cost than they could build themselves. The RC213V-S is the real deal because it was meant to compete in MotoGP -- it's basically a modern NSR500V.
Unfortunately, the V-S never raced for a variety of reasons, mainly because Ducati threw a spanner in the works by declaring themselves as an Open Class team, which forced the GPC to renegotiate the class concepts to ensure factory teams did not try to race as Open Class teams. The negotiations ultimately killed the Open Class, and re-created the satellite bike system we see today.
The death of the Open Class was a great shame for MotoGP, and it deprived fans of seeing the RC213V-S circulate a race track in anger.

This is not correct. Ducati ran as an open class team for several years until they lost their concessions after taking several podium places. Further the RC213V-S had little to do with actual moto gp competition and was never built for that. You are confusing this with the RC213RS which did compete in moto gp for a few years and in one instance Nicky Hayden rode one for a season.
Don't know how you managed it, but your grasp on the history of the sport seems very confused, and a quick search online would clear it up.

Also, the negotiations you're talking about that killed the open class never happened. The open class ceased to exist when all teams including the full factory efforts had to change over to using the unified software.
Quite frankly I find it incredible how you managed to get so much wrong in your statement.

@@cheeseburger3209 Dorna designed the Open Class to lure factories away from the MSMA's 1000cc formula. However, the MSMA were not interested; therefore, the Open Class was going to operate, in their minds, as a place for private teams without the specter of claiming rules. In other words, the MSMA thought the Open Class would replace CRT.
The MSMA remained united until Ducati broke ranks in March of 2014, and announced they would run definitely compete as an open class team. That was the end of the Open Class as the MSMA intended to use it. It became a weird melange of superbikes and retro-fitted GP bikes with spring valves. The usefulness of a bike for racing, is its ability to generate revenue for the team. When Ducati entered the Open Class, and it was unclear what Suzuki and Aprilia would do the following season, the RC213V-S no longer had a place.
Yes, for two years Ducati technically ran as an Open Class team, until Michelin and Dorna ended the 3-tiered-circus, but that has little to do with the shifting competitive landscape and the political maneuvering within the MSMA to keep the other factories out of the Open Class when Ducati broke ranks. Ultimately, the MSMA succeeded in steering Suzuki and Aprilia towards
"factory" team designation, but in the end, the GPC made a grand compromise and somehow unified the entire mess of classes under new factory rules with satellite bikes. That was the end of production race bikes in MotoGP, and it's a shame, imo.

Then the actual details and price emerged and Honda instead gave us a mediocre answer to the post '15 liter bikes with their new fireblade. If this machine came out as a normal bike, same look, V4 engine, the split exhaust, the solid swingarm, I'd change my blood overnight to Honda. I buy based off visual appeal and this is the only one that looks better to me than the pre '15 BMW. Only bike I even envy a little, except that price tag.

Ducati at least sold the Desmosedici for less than half the Honda, made 50hp more in stock trim AND U.S. buyers could also get the race kit that boosted the power to around 200hp.

@3:05 - Honda didn't choose a V-5 layout "to dial in the firing order", but rather to take advantage of the rules. Part of the original rules package for MotoGP was different minimum weight limits for different numbers of cylinders; V-2s got the lowest minimum weight, while V-6 engines would get the highest minimum weight (the rules specified anywhere from 2 to 6 cylinders). Honda would have built a V-6 if the weight penalty part of the rules didn't exist..., but they built a V-5 because they thought that was the best compromise between minimum weight and maximum revs.

Your understanding of the naming for “RC” is a bit flawed.
The name RC51 wasn’t used in EU and Asia. Other RC’s like the RC30 and RC45 have names following their chassis code, R meaning 601-799cc and C meaning On-Road. The chassis code on the RC51 is actually SC45 (S meaning 800cc+).
The old RC chassis back in the 50’s and 60’s did follow that name convention, but the 30/45 and subsequently the 51 were named for a call back to that. The 51… was a unique one that really only the USA wanted to use.
Look at the. in of some pretty mundane bikes and you’ll find “RC” chassis codes as well, including the lauded race bike the Honda Shadow.

If anyone's wondering why this is so expensive for something not all that different from a $18k liter street bike, appearance-wise; this is why: With an F1 car, it's easy to tell it's a prototype racer, not a production sportscar like a Corvette. All MotoGP bikes are prototype racers, not production superbikes like a Yamaha R1 or GSXR1000R, the same as F1 cars. But sportbikes, as it happens, all have the same general appearance, hence it's not intuitive as to why the RC213 is so expensive. It's a ultra-high precision prototype racer, incomparable to a production superbike.
