So many times I have been super impressed with the videographer(s). Just the right amount of moving shots without the annoying camera giggle. Great side interest shots of animal and people's antics and reminders of the beauty of your desert home. I know the editor polishes it up for the final product but you can't edit poor video into great video. Good job to the one(s) behind the camera! You are a vital part of what makes this channel so enjoyable.
When you first said lathe I immediately thought of my grandparents 114 yr old house. During a remodel we discovered behind the plaster all these thin pieces of wood, lathe. So, when you brought out the chicken wire I was confused for a minute, I totally understand the concept and it will definitely help make your dome stronger. But, I have to agree with Ashley, “Lathe is dumb”; what a pain in the tail that must have been to put on. 😩😂 You have absolutely amazing neighbors who come and help, but that also tells me you are amazing neighbors too. ❤
Thanks Dan! You're doing such a nice job putting on the chicken wire. I like the turtle castle and the beetle home! Trona is with the goats and Cloud stay near you guys. The cats can't resist hanging out with you too! Yay, thanks Sam for helping at this crucial time before it gets too cold to do the stucco coat. So fiberglass reinforced quickcrete for the stucco layer. Starting at the top seems the best way to do this. Thanks for the arrow tip about getting a spout out of the bags. It looks like it's going on really well. I like Sam's dance with his hands full of stucco! Cute! Sam's happy dance. Thanks for this video Longnecker family!
Just want to comment that I love what you are doing there. I'm going to be 73 this month a d use to do all things in my home, tilling, painting, carpentry. My husband liked working on cars. He would do the grocery shopping!!! ABSOLUTELY HATE IT! HE TOOK OVER WHEN I HAD BABIES BECAUSE I WOULD GO SO FAST THRU THE STORE THAT I WOULD END UP KNOCKING OVER DISPLAYS. HAD TO 😂 LAUGH SO HARD!!
Even though i am watching. I still can't imagine or believe you got lathe on all those angles and curves. I knew a guy once who did prifessional stucco... But it was just city, STRAIGHT walls. Kudos guys ❤❤❤
Hands on is the best! If you have an air compressor have you though about a stucco gun? You'll still need to smooth it to perfection but it would slap it on 10 times faster.
You may not like the lattice, but sure did a great job on it. Would you be willing to share that final stucco mix recipe? Watching your video I’m about ready to build my garden shed.
Gotta have lath. Makes it so much stronger. The fiberglass kind is more flexible, and some are even self-adhesive. That might be easier on your next dome. Of course, it ain't cheap.
Good morning hope you guys are having a good day morning hope everything is fine out there enjoy the weather out there is kind of warm is it cold cold in California okay and have a great day
Knowing you want to be accurate, and sound accurate, remember that the wire mesh reinforcement used with plaster is not the "lath" of "lath and plaster." Lath are the rough small horizontally mounted boards that old-school plaster would be applied to (without the wire). When the wire was added it was just called "wire mesh." Love your videos. I also love the trick you showed using pliers to twist out the slack of the wire mesh. :-)
I think that the mesh lathe layer is an excellent idea. More work of course, but hopefully will improve the long term sturdiness of the outer layer. So if this will be used by Adeli, what about the other 3, and does that mean that she doesn't get her space in the big house?
I’m catching up after being away and noticed the cute bit at the end where Ashley says “this is the next video you should watch” actually has your latest video, not the next one you posted. Is there an option you can toggle to make it show “next” rather than “latest”. The dome is looking fantastic! I’m so looking forward to seeing it completed. I’m going to cheat and check the latest weekend update. 🤪
Love your channel and your energy. Just a suggestion to try some Native American Flute music or other non-repetitive music to go with your build. Looking good!
I've always thought you should have used lathe, but I really remember Hayden saying that the red bags needed lathe, but I didn't hear him say anything about the entire structure. Of course you had him around way more than I saw him.
Not sure lath is the proper terminology for the wire used to apply the stucco to. Lath is wood strips attached to the studs to apply the plaster to usually on the inside of building walls. I can’t remember what you said the cement to aggregate ratio you are using for the stucco. At 1:3 the mixer and wheel barrow don’t look full enough when you use a whole bag of cement in each mix.
A very quick internet search will tell you yes, metal lathe is the standard for exterior walls. The stucco is pre-mixed (there's a couple of closeups of the bag), just add water.
It seems the chicken wire conforms nicely to convex surfaces, Concave not so much. Thus I conjecture that seams between pieces of lath belong in valleys & the chicken wire should be cut accordingly
Couldn’t you have used a hopper to spray that last coat of stucco on? I’m just wondering if that would work and maintain the integrity of the dome shape?
It wouldn't affect the shape of the dome (we spent the last few videos building that up ourselves). The spray gun requires a huge generator and air compressor, and for this size building it is faster and easier to just do it by hand. We also prefer the sculpted look.
@@TinyShinyHome ok that is good to know I didn’t think about the generator. I am sure using your hands does something for your soul as well. It’s like getting your hands in soil to plant something good. Well I love what you guys are doing!
You all could have the #1 TV show if you were on TV. It would be like the Food Channel on steroids as you all really have the appeal and attraction. You are by far my favorite view on TH-cam. I mean I keep saying this but your fam is the warm and fuzzy of the ultimate culture. You brought in Hayden or he volunteered but none the less, you all looked like family…tight nit. The creative designs and just the way you present to the camera is so authentic. You are savvy and smart enough to get the right agent as you would kill it on the Discovery or Travel Channels. Just as long as they don’t interfere with you objectives anyway, I’m selfish when I know what I like and you all have it. Although I’m very religious and politically outspoken, you all are doing it without this polarization. Kudos y’all! We love you and yes we became a Homie! Fantastic value proposition! Touché
we really appreciate the kind words here. it means more than you could ever know, and this is exactly why we keep going. we believe that living this way and showing the good and the bad will help others who are considering living like this. plus, its a whole lot of fun...hard work, but fun. Thanks again-
Can’t say that I don’t agree with you on the lathe! Labor intensive! Maybe just on the direct sun areas? Think it will look good when it’s finished! Sure slows the house construction!
@@TinyShinyHome I realize that I meant to say *Why don’t you just use cement instead of using stucco? It was a stupid auto correct mistake that I should have seen before I hit the arrow lol.
So they is stucco mesh it comes in like 2ft by 4ft sheets and it has a much tighter pattern more like a diamond shape they use it a lot in Florida for stucco walls wish I had some to send a pic I have used it for a grill on an old truck. It is flexible and will mold to surfaces

The cat is obviously the building inspector 😊
He is also there for adorable emotional support when necessary. ❤
every building needs a catspector!!
The dome looks so cool!! Can't wait to see it finished. It is going to be beautiful. I bet Adali is so excited to have her own little dome house. 🥰
Hands down. You are still my most favorite TV show! Love watching the homestead grow. Can we please get another tree update before the snow flies?
Hayden’s laugh you plugged in there, lmao!! 😂 It’s looking awesome you guys!! ❤
I am amazed at the amount of work it has taken to build the dome but I must say that it is a work of art, good job 👍😊❤
I think you are going to be glad you did the lathe work!!! I love how your cats are so involved in the construction. lol
I love all the help you get from the animals too!

That's a fine looking Superadobe Dome ... helping hands & made with love 💜💜💜
You are at the last mile with the dome! Keep it up! ❤
Have a good week and count your blessings amen.
Love the markings that looks like a big moustache on the cat. So cute and something rarely seen.
The dome is looking Awesome!!!
I've already watched the full dome build, why am i watching these? I'm hooked on TSH, that's why!😅❤🎉
It's _really_ shaping up nicely! I think that it's a very cool addition to your homestead!
Definitely a HAND MADE ,hands on project .!!❤😮
How neat the two sisters can have a slumber party in big sisters dome.😊 Even mom can join in for ladies time.
The dome looks absolutely amazing!
I wonder what colour your daughter will chose for the dome, since the stucco is done.
That is extremely interesting how carefully you apply the stucco wire…actually ingenious
No animal has or can ever nap as gracefully and in as much bliss as Cloud. (i think that is your big dogs name.)

Still building 4 kids rooms in the house. That won't be done for a while so this gives her a little extra space in the meantime.
Getting closer! I was surprised to hear you say that it's mid December. So, I would imagine that in "real time" Adalie is almost moved in???
😂 no still lots to do.
If you're lucky, you'll have some kitty prints in the stucco.

Absolute awesomeness! Will having a fire in the fire box help dry things outward?
What did Hayden say about your gum trees ?

No he didn't say anything like that. Just recommended lath for the final stucco coat.
Ashley's "love" of that lathe reminds me of a funny GIF of a young girl who is angry shaking her brush in frustration. :)
You guys should build a dome each year and then the kids will have their own tiny house.
Oh man! Clay didn’t tell me about that I wonder if he will have another one when I come out

It's actually lath, but it conformed pretty well to every surface. Hard corners definitely needed some cutting and overlapping.
It looks like an egg. You should paint it like an Easter egg.😊
i wonder if trona ( the 4th white dog..) is from " mylittle homestead"??
and i dont see the orange cat anymore. is he no longer around? what happened?
now just to build another 9 so you can house a work crew to build the house, later can use for bnb housing 😊

That looks like one amazing cat entertainment center (that's obviously what it's for, right?)!
Wasn't the plan to have each kid design and lead the build on their own structure, or did that change for the first one?
Not really. They wanted rooms in the big house. Adali just claimed the dome as we were building it 😂
Do you have any show about hot water?
Not really, all our hot water is on-demand propane. Solar water heaters just don't scale well for a family of 6.
❤️👍👍👍
I think that using trowels instead of your hands would be quicker an give a better finish .
But looking good guys .well done
We like the hand textured look much better for these kinds of buildings.
