its been a month now, so far deck restore has stood up to what it claims, my kid loves it and no one has slip of fallen on the deck as in the past, it has superior grip when coming in and out of the pool, the color and material have not worn down. i feel that this product is the best in the market right now!

I have add this to my 16 x24 deck 3 yrs ago after several years of using a stain. i used restore 10X 3 years ago with no issues. The key is applying the 2nd coat after a solid week of drying. I noticed 2 days was not long enough to really harden. I have a dog and saw some scratches after 1 application ad day 2 of drying. I applied second coat and let dry for
5 days and this stuff is hard even with the dog and metal chairs sliding. It covered all the cracks and splinters. I bought the 4x for my verticals and it worked very well

I applied last year and its held up great even after a hard Michigan winter I think the cleaning before is important and if your deck is too far gone it's not gonna fix it!

Hey Eddie, thanks for making the Rustoleum Restore video. It's more helpful to see an honest demo by a real homeowner than by a manufacturer. I only recently saw this product advertised on TV and I can't believe that this product is intended to be applied so thickly with a resultant lumpy finish texture. I understand that the intent is to bridge/fill the cracks as a filler, but I'd be inclined to apply the product with a squeegee to force it into the cracks and finish with a thinned application.

I know we had a tough winter here in Mass. but I used it on my front farmers porch in the late summer/early fall 2013. It is now June, 2014 and now the steps and part of the porch are peeling and flaking. The steps got salt over the winter the porch did not now the porch is also peeling. I used it on vertical areas above my lattice work it is staying on there. Home Depot had a "paint expert" who told me you need to clean/power wash the whole deck, remove any old finish including any old stain or water repellent or the paint will not have anything to stick to.

The main thing I need to add with any product you choose to apply to a deck is you need to apply a coat of protection not just a coat if color. That's the number one cause of failure is not applying it thick enough. The second main cause is moisture being sealed inside the wood. People tend to pressure wash their deck and once it looks dry then they apply their product. There is still tons of moisture inside the wood which wreaks havoc to the adhesion process.

    Eddie:
Great job on the vid!! Thanks for taking the time to post the video. My wife and I have to do the same thing with our deck. We chose the Restore stuff because like you we are just plain tired of mucking with the deck. We each have jobs and other things to do besides refinish the deck. We experimented last year with the product on the tops of the rails to see if the product was going to work as advertised and it has so, the rest of the deck will be done more or less the same way.

We used deck restore by rocksolid in September of 13, by spring 14 it was peeling and flaking. It is just an awful products, it has your hopes so high, and you go thru a ton of work and $$$ to get it done, and wow, it looks great when you are done, but only lasts a few months.

Solid stain is a label and acts more like paint than stain. For a better result you need an oil based stain but even that won't work after the deck has been painted with solid stain!!

  • @shovelheadseven
    @shovelheadseven 10 ปีที่แล้ว

To avoid the cracks from reappearing you can fill them with an appropriate filler instead of relying on the paint material to fill the cracks. Using a glue shot down into the crack or split may help to stop it from further splitting. Waterproof glue would be advisable being near water. it seems like for opaque finishes using A primer would make for better adhesion. Pressure washing the surface would create a better bond as well. With the sun exposure nothing will last forever. Sun is really what kills paint. Its all really in the prep as far as longevity is concerned. A properly prepped surface will last many years more than a poorly prepped surface. Within about a year bad prep will look as if it hadnt been painted in 30 years. Your deck looks great.

It is a great product. I have done about 7 decks over the last year and all my clients love the results.
Behr makes a similar product called Deck Over and I have used that 2 times but, its not as thick and doesn't fill the cracks and splits as well.

@@Coupe420 I haven’t been in contact with all my past customers but two of them I’m still close and they have had minimal problems. This product doesn’t mean your deck will miraculously last for life. I’ve had to re-apply in small areas because of wood splitting but nothing more than normal upkeep. My guess is the ones who have had less than acceptable outcomes didn’t apply it right or thought their horribly damaged decks would miraculously be cured by this product.

when i used this product, it was made by the company Syntainc, and its on its 2nd year of being applied and I can say I HAVE NO FLAKING OR CHIPPING WHAT SO EVER. But now i see that the company that is making it is call Restore by Rust-OLEUM, I used Deck Restore made by Syntainc, I'am thinking that Rust- Oleum bought the product from Syntainc, and maybe altar the formula, another thing you must follow the direction, i will post another video on how my deck looks on its 2nd year, thank you so much, Handyeddie1

I used this product 6 months ago half of it has already worn off. We cleaned as they said and put on two coats. It took twice the amount of product as it said would cover and6 months later one half has rubbed off. We have to be careful or we will bring it into our home from the bottom of our shoes. We could have built a new deck for just a little more money

I used to be a paint contractor.Last deck I restored,I sanded on that thing for a straight week after pressure washing.I did this job by the hour,I didn't know any way to price the unknown amount of time it would take. When I finished, the total was probably more than the material to put down new wood deck boards.I knocked about half the price off, apologized for not suggesting it first, and changed my entire approach to deck finishing.I started recommending just that ,to replace rather than restore.Of course homeowners looked at me like I was crazy,I eventually just retired from a never thankful job that nobody else wanted, but who everybody was an expert.I say sit on your deck, enjoy it,and don't stress over it,it is not furniture. The day you have your house painted is the best it will ever look.Every day after,it will look worse. The sun and rain will beat it up.Fact of life.PS,I don't know why this post in my girlfriends name, and no time to figure it out.My name is Walt.Good grief.

Dave Smith.... PAY A LITTLE MORE FOR COMPOSITE DECKING?! Are you freaking kidding me?! I built a 30'x40' deck on back of my house 4 yrs ago with treated. The reason I used treated?! 3 times CHEAPER than composite. Not everybody can afford that kind of expensive product! Granted, composite is the way to go for low maintenance, but waaaaaaaay too expensive if you want to build a large deck. I find this product AWESOME, and am excited to apply this product to my deck ASAP.

  • @rivermorrison8383
    @rivermorrison8383 9 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem I had with this stuff, is that if it gets the tiniest nick or crack, water seeps in and gets underneath, and the restore layer gets separated from the wood, and you'll notice it'll peel up very easily. Maybe it would have been better if I put a thin under coating on first with a lot of pressure. We've had ours for 3 years and it's still pretty decent.

this is for old decking thats on its last leg and not new wood, so read the instructions and take your time for a nice job...You want to see the wood grain then use Wolman F&P or a Semi Trans stain.....Its made to restore old decks...

I agree with Levi. I spent over $1,000.00 to cover my deck. My wife and I spent countless hours cleaning and preparing the deck for restore. We go away for the winter and when we returned in early April the deck is bublling and peeling every where. I used my leaf blower to clean up the chips off the deck as the chips stick to your shoes and bare feet. And what do you know.... When I was using the blower more chips continue coming off the deck... I have sent e-mails to Rustoleums web address and called customer service and nothing. It is JUNK! do not use.

We explained to them that we were going to put their product over another product on one deck and we needed to seal their product on all the decks. The Restore did not adhere to the other product we were covering and bubbled up even when we told the specifically what the other product was. We had to completely re-deck this deck

I used this product on a rather older deck that needed re-staining or painting. Restore was highly recommended at my Ace Paint Center. After applying according to directions last September, the deck is peeling and bubbling all over this spring. In fact, some spots come off with a broom. It has resulted in a mess with which to deal and a loss of money. I do not recommend its use!!

did you have any waterproof stain on the deck already . this is notr paintable and must be well aged or removed for any film coating to stick. the problem is not rustoleum but the true value store. try a benjamin moore dealer also deck stain remover contains lye and causes permanat skin damage! its mot labled well enough and should not be sold try citric orange stripper 60f in the shade pen 15 min covered with mil plastic three hrs removed with brush and electric spinning pressure washer. it has buffered lye and is safer . the runoff is considered less harmful

you know that best way to get good results is follow the direction to the tee, i am in the construction business for close to 40 years, and that deck was my first ever built, so i already had invested about $500 on the last stain and sealer from Benjamin Moore and it lasted 2 years, so when i saw this product that last 7 to 10 years i follow the directions and clean and pret the deck as told by company, and my deck is still fine

Maybe my calculations are off. 1, 5 gallon bucket says it covers 100 sqft. any tips you have or info would be great. Thank you for your video and help

Hi Eddie, nice work. I have two questions. First, can you apply that stuff on vertical surfaces? Second, could you use a regular roller to minimize the texture? Either that or follow it with a brush to knock down some of the bumps. I am wanting to use this for something other than a deck, and don't necessarily need the texture like you would in a situation where you will walk on it. Again, great work!

Hey, Eddie. Please let us know how this has held up over the winter. Did the cracks resurface or did they stay concealed? Thanks sooooo much for your time.

Eddie, I'm not certain if you have reported on the Restore after the winter season.. I would like to know if it has held up? Thanks for the video..

I thought you were supposed to put the second coat down right when the first coat dries as to keep any dirt from building up between coats?

DO TELL! How did it hold up after the winter. Also, pulling chairs around deck.....does it flake off at all?

Also, I'm concerned with the terms "light power washing". Do you know if a standard household power washer will too much pressure to clean the surface with?

Hey Eddie- FANTASTIC video. Thanks for taking the time to show us your process. Did you use the standard Restore Product, or the Liquid Armor version?

    Hi Eddie,
Have you gotten around to doing the follow up video? I am wanting to do the deck restore so I do not have to replace my entire deck flooring. I am curious how it holds up after a year, especially with the cracks that had already came back on you after two weeks.
    Thanks!

Eddie thanks so much for posting this, I have been thinking about this product for my deck and you have convinced me to use it. One question - did you try and pre fill the cracks with product - I have watched their commercials and thought it would be extremely time consuming. Great job and thanks again!

I have had the same experience as Randy Gardner. Expensive mistake and worst deck product I have used in 30+years. Looked great for 6 months, but this spring it is chipping off everywhere. Menards, please stop selling and take off the shelf.

You did not clean it first? Latex product over oil that is not going to work without sanding
