Well done BenDeen! That's a mighty fine toad in the hole, you did a good job, it looks tasty, you created a classic British meal. You should of shared your toad in the hole with Ring Lady and add some green peas and mash for the perfect meal for two.
Mate that Toady looks great! I’ve said it before in previous videos but it’s very rare to find things like this as a takeaway. It’s pretty much something that’s only ever homemade as it’s best fresh out the oven and doesn’t travel well.
It’s true, a lot of British meals are basic in their ingredients, spices and cooking techniques. We are a small damp island, with lots of countryside- so I guess generations before just made do with what they had. But Ben always hits the nail on the head when he says these are hearty filling meals that warm you up and sometimes that’s all you want on a cold wet Sunday evening 😂!
For your first time ever making it i'm really impressed. I make this probably once sometimes twice a month in the cold season. Getting the yorkshire pudding part correct isn't that easy for first try. I always think one of the most key parts of the pudding part is correct amount of salt. But toad in the hole is a base for any potatoe, chips, mash, roast potatoes and even new potatoes. Also good quality sausages are a must, one of my favourites is the Tescos finest caramalised onion, apple and pork sausages they are soooo good. You made a good point at the end about not openinig the oven, if you do open the oven it can make the batter really flat, all the air bubbles collapse and you get a much more dense pudding. Just keep eye on it through the oven window, depending on your oven 25-35 minutes is usually enough.
What a legend. Over here in the UK making UK dishes. Outstanding. Glad you enjoyed that. I made one last Sunday for myself and my children and we polished the lot 😆. Dunno if it's difficult but to do it well you need to plan ahead a little bit. Turns a 20 minute meal into a 25 minute + 5 minutes the night before meal. I think a lot of the 'difficulty' comes from nobody being able to agree on what kind of texture they like. Do they like it dense & just a bit crispy around the edges, or light & airy, crispy all over & throughout? the ratios matter a lot with this.

Ben. English mustard in my opinion is probably the best style out there, stings your noise a little as you breath out(some won’t like that and prefer mild). You should try horseradish sauce with your toad in the hole too. You should try a beef and Stilton pie(short crust pastry). As the world says, English/British food is beige and dull. It is hearty, comfort food. Exactly what you need when living in a climate that is cloudy 2/3rds of the year and gets rain (on average)nearly half of the days in a year. When made correctly it has some great flavour.

Love Toad in the hole swimming in gravy. M&S do a really good one in the fridge section if you have one nearby. Everything is generally great quality there.
Big round Yorkshire pudding, layer of colcannon mash inside, sausages on top and onion gravy on top was named as 'dogs dinner' at a local pub, really nice as gravy and mash combo mixes well with the rest
Mate that Yorkshire pudding looks fire!! Well done! That gets a huge stamp of approval ❤ Next you gotta try cheese and potato pie if you want comfort food - just grate a bunch of sharp cheddar and mash it into loads of potatoes until thick and even - throw In some diced onions and tomatoes if you wanna make it interesting 😊 bake that shit in a dish for about 20-25 mins at 180 til golden brown 😎 trust me. Ultimate winter food and cures depression 😂
That is very cool. Most Brits couldn't make it that well. With Yorkshire, you're aiming for soft, fluffy, slightly greasy, inside and crunchy outside and looks like you have it just like I like it. Too much crunch can make it dry, but good for supporting or picking up. Colemans is good, but best if you make it with powder as you can control it and make it much hotter if you want.
Gotta admit, and yes I know this sounds stupid, at 20 seconds in I was thinking “if he doesn’t have some gravy with this and I’m guna lose my shit” but then you pulled out a large pan full of good looking gravy. Onion gravy, well played sir. Great looking dish for your own attempt and good gravy. Hope you enjoy it 👍 Also, Greggs part 3, I know others have mentioned this, but it still has to be said, go down to the store and grab it yourself. Your order won’t be messed up and then you can have the proper Greggs experience just as you described in part 1. That cool autumn air, less than warm temperatures and a nice warm/hot pasty to keep your oven burning. There’s nothing like it

My favourite way to make toad in the hole is in a cast iron skillet. I use lard rather than oil, start it on the hob so I can sear the sausages evenly, put the pan in the oven for a while then pour the batter into it. It's actually insane how much better in makes it than doing it in a tray.
I tried this before and it wasn't good at all, just sausage (that tasted like it had filler) in pastry type bread with gravy that tasted like it came from a packet. It's not that special, actually not special at all.
@@orangeslice43 Janky to me means crusty edges and a rustic non conformed shape, thats a good toad in the hole in my books. Mate, that was a meal for two/three. Add mashed and roast potatoes with another couple of veggies. Nobody eats 6 sausages. Two is normal, three’s a treat and anything more is greed! Yes, my parents were WWII/rationing people. It took until the late 70s before my mother stopped being appalled by an English breakfast - a whole week’s ration on one plate! She could feed a family of seven with the heartiest food, though. Then, she went to an ’adventurous cookery course’ at the local college in the 80s. A whole world of food was introduced to us. We used to wait, every Tuesday evening, for the latest creation. It was wonderful! All those recipes are in a handwritten book which I still treasure. But, looking back, I wish I could make her ’mince and dumplings’, ’cheese scones’, ’coffee and walnut cake’, ’chicken pie’, ’Beef Wellington’ (special occasion food which has never been matched), ’bread and butter pudding’, ’stuffed bacon chops’, ’bacon and marrow... cheesy thing’ and her roasted parsnips... and her gravy... Unfortunately, she never needed a recipe for the British food she rustled up. My dad made the Sunday Dinner - my mother was doing the ironing (for 7) while listening to The Archers - and I learned how to make a Sunday Dinner by helping my daddy. Thank all that is holy! So, take this as a warning. Help your mam and dad with the cooking or you will forever say "Its not as good as my mother’s/father’s"! PS. That toad-in-the-hole looked splendid. The gravy looks as though it needs some Compton’s gravy salts, Marmite and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. I love ’dark’ gravy which is not quite as ’thick and floury’. But, I wouldn't sniff my nose at it. Bravo!

That looks a proper job. Well done. Everyone has their own preference for their toad/Yorkshire's. Some like it crispy, almost dry all the way through, often to be softened up with the gravy. Some like it quite soft or even stodgy in the middle, and just a touch crispy on the outside. My preference is usually the latter, and untouched by gravy (keep that for any veg or potatoes). But I'm probably unusual with that. Try a few variations and see what you prefer. But have to say your effort looked really good.

One of my favourite dishes with mash potato and I have lashings of English Mustard with mine as well on the side.
Im57 and half English half Irish,Your toad in the hole looks perfect, well done I'd be proud to have made that ❤🇬🇧🇮🇪
Love Toad in the hole swimming in gravy.
Yes a classic for us peasants 👍🏻😊
This guy is more British than me and my family have lived in the UK for a thousand years.
A staple for my family. Some carrots and peas and that whole pan of gravy and that’s a home run right there. 🐸
Mate that Yorkshire pudding looks fire!! Well done! That gets a huge stamp of approval ❤
Next you gotta try cheese and potato pie if you want comfort food - just grate a bunch of sharp cheddar and mash it into loads of potatoes until thick and even - throw In some diced onions and tomatoes if you wanna make it interesting 😊 bake that shit in a dish for about 20-25 mins at 180 til golden brown 😎 trust me. Ultimate winter food and cures depression 😂
A good plate of champ is good, too. Old Irish recipe from ages gone by.
YEP, with some red pickled cabbage yum.
You hit with this. Such a good recipe and well cooked.
I have never in my whole entire life enjoyed seeing and hearing someone eat this much in all my 18065 days
Actually, since it's a popular side, most of us do quite well. The comments are full of those of us who make it.
As a Yorkshire lad I eat this a lot and well cooked btw 👍👍
it's the easiest thing to make
It was well made, especially for his first try! It needs beef drippings and the right heat, and he nailed it 👍
@@orangeslice43 bet your fun at parties
Gotta admit, and yes I know this sounds stupid, at 20 seconds in I was thinking “if he doesn’t have some gravy with this and I’m guna lose my shit” but then you pulled out a large pan full of good looking gravy. Onion gravy, well played sir.
Great looking dish for your own attempt and good gravy. Hope you enjoy it 👍
Also, Greggs part 3, I know others have mentioned this, but it still has to be said, go down to the store and grab it yourself. Your order won’t be messed up and then you can have the proper Greggs experience just as you described in part 1. That cool autumn air, less than warm temperatures and a nice warm/hot pasty to keep your oven burning. There’s nothing like it
There's nothing like it? what
Aye, I agree with that. You have to go to Greggs for the full experience
@@orangeslice43on a cool autumn/winter day coming out of Greggs with a nice hot/warm pasty of your choice and eating it as you’re walking around town. A nice quick pick me up to warm your insides
Looks great, mate! You did a really good job!
Dude, that tv behind you should be a thing even when you get back to korea. It's like an easter egg lol.
Classic. You can never have too much gravy, maybe need a little salt although you May have already added it.
That looks really damn good, you absolutely smashed the Toad in the hole. Good job!
As far as I'm concerned you're an honorary englishman, haven't got a bad thing to say about this, looks perfect and I would kill for a piece.
This guy gets it…
Nah that toad in the hole looks elite. Took me a good few attempts to get my first one right. No way you bang out such a masterpiece.. not surprised tho
No1 makes me more proud to be British that you
I love watching Ben eat, and I’ve been watching for years, but after that long I know our tastes are completely different haha.
My guy BenDeen is devouring the food like Jesus Christ ate his meal during the Last Supper ! Beast mode !!!
Cheers from Connecticut 🇺🇸
My favourite way to make toad in the hole is in a cast iron skillet. I use lard rather than oil, start it on the hob so I can sear the sausages evenly, put the pan in the oven for a while then pour the batter into it. It's actually insane how much better in makes it than doing it in a tray.
For your first ever attempt that’s a pretty good toad in the hole mate 👌🏻
Thank you for showing the world that British cuisine is not as bad as the rest of the world would like to make out.
I tried this before and it wasn't good at all, just sausage (that tasted like it had filler) in pastry type bread with gravy that tasted like it came from a packet. It's not that special, actually not special at all.
Ur definitely black
homemade is gonna be so good, looks like you did a good job, the more janky looking the better
"the more janky looking the better" living in the Uk for 4 years that's the least truthful statement ever.
@@orangeslice43 Janky to me means crusty edges and a rustic non conformed shape, thats a good toad in the hole in my books. And seeing as you brought it up i’ll offer my own credentials, i was born here mate, ive spent more time shitting out toad in the holes than time you’ve spent living in the country
@@bendance4622own that fraud
Mate considering that's your first effort that's a fucking great looking toad in the hole
This video made me happy. Took me back to my childhood food and glad to see someone try it for first time to enjoy it so much
Pretty good Toad for a home cook attempt, looks awesome
.....wonderful to see a great British dish being enjoyed, together with English mustard.😊
It's horrid
It really was amazing, and it was even better because he made it himself.
@@orangeslice43have you had it?
@@orangeslice43😂 your funny
Bravo!
That looks like a banging toad in the hole! Perfection.
You need to do a Marks and Spencer video while you’re here. Try:-
Devonshire strawberry Yoghurt
"Best ever" Trifle
"Best ever" Maccaroni and Cheese
Sticky Toffee muffin or Triple chocolate muffin
Woodfired Salami and Spicy Roquito Pizza
"Best ever" steak pie
Caramlel pecan Yum yum donuts

I would love to see that. Their peanut butter bars are supremely good too.
@@Ciara-ASMR Yeah M and S are top drawer. The best quality supermarket I've come across globally.

Everything wrong with it.

@@orangeslice43 What a sad little life, Jane
That looks spot on. Well done. When I make it I use Cumberland sausages and mix peas and diced swede and carrots in the batter and use beef gravy.
