How Much Bacteria Is on Silverware at This Popular Restaurant?

  • Now that restaurants are springing back to life, perhaps it’s time to start wondering just how clean all those forks and plates are. Most restaurants use industrial dishwashers, which clean dishes and silverware with scalding hot water and commercial-grade soap. But what happens between the wash and the time the dinnerware reaches your table? Inside Edition swabbed utensils and dishes from several high-profile restaurants in New York City and sent the carefully collected samples for testing.

      True, but if it's in plates and fork that you're about to shove into your mouth that's a cause for concern. Nobody wants to ingest poop bacteria like E Coli. Proper hand-washing is necessary or at least they could use disposable plastic gloves.

      @@PuffOfSmoke @Puff Of Smoke Yes, it is nasty but that is just life. They did a similar test with peoples toothbrushes and found E Coli too. Bacteria is a normal part of life and I feel that it's not that concerning. How many people go to these restaurants and come back sick? Not a substantial amount or we probably would of established a correlation between eating out and getting sick. Sure, we can tell employees to wash their hands more frequently but at the end of the day, bacteria will still find a way I'm sure.

    I used to be a dishwasher at Olive Garden and I can tell you that when I raised concerns about dishes being dirty even after going through the machine, the other dishwashers didn't care. I also worked at another restaurant in the dish pit and they showed me how to scrub out the drain on the floor and then used the same scrubby on the dishes. I quit after 3 hours.

      Bro if they messed up the shipping process then they would have all had ecoli on them. But they didn't. They didn't cross contaminate, and as you saw there were instances of the dishes being clean of harmful bacteria meaning they handled the swabs with care.

    • @Ra-jy6kv
      @Ra-jy6kv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's... a good thought but that's not how it works. E Coli is E Coli. It will get you sick. The virus mutates and doesn't have antidote like with a bacteria. For the food, since it is going directly inside us with limited defensive barriers (e.g. skin, lymph nodes) with some viruses able to tolerate stomach acids, this can be bad for a person.

Didn't stay too long there and I rarely eat out now.

  • @TheJaisonIpe
    @TheJaisonIpe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +155

    The thing is there might be a factor of error involved too. The sponge used to take samples might have been contaminated before hand or might get contaminated during transit.
    This seems like fear mongering. How many times have you been sick while eating out? A lot of these microbes might have previously entered our body and we might have developed immunity to it. All I'm saying is restaurants can do all they want but you can't ensure complete sterilization in an open environment.

And our ancestors didn't have steam sanitation or silverware even and a lot of people around the world don't live in such sanitary environment. Without this education, your immune system may be more prone to attacking the wrong target - in the case of autoimmune diseases, yourself.

      Except people in those places often do have outbreaks of cholera and other diseases and people often have a shorter lifespan and other issues. Our ancestors died in their 30's and 40's. We live longer now than we ever have in recorded history. And that's also partially because after we do get sick we have ways to boost our immune systems to fight off the issue or medicine to cure us.
      Take away your precious antibiotics and vaccines and other medical tools and see how fast you croak superman. Children especially died off young. If you wanted to solidify your legacy you had to have multiple children because it was highly likely one or two wouldn't make it.

    I worked in a restaurant in the fall of 2020, despite telling us the protocol was to wash hands before handling any plates / food, I would often be “asked” to help carry plates to tables without being allowed time to wash my hands (I was a hostess so I wasn’t always working with food but tried to be clean when I did). The unfortunate thing is restaurant culture encourages speed over most else.

    For that same reason I carry my own pre-packaged plastic fork, knife, and spoon. I've seen too often people leave the toilet without washing their hands. There should be some kind of simple portable device that can detect bacteria on plates and utensils and restaurants should be required to make routine checks. If there’s an issue, they can take steps to figure out who or what is the cause. One lazy/negligent employee that uses a dirty phone or bathroom without washing afterwards or poor procedures for washing dishes can make a lot of people sick.

    Also, we don't know how sanitary their sponges were that gathered the bacteria, and how about the guy collecting the samples, how do you know he didn't cough near the sponges. And even if you eat at home it doesn't mean that the food you purchased in the supermarket is going to be edible. For example since Covid the quality of a lot of household products have gone downhill. Campbell's Chicken soups, Amy's Frozen Dinners, Chock Full of Nuts Coffee to name a few. Sure you can return items but who wants to get sick from groceries and then to top it off have to go back to the store and return it.

    Things you can do:
    • Bring your own Thermos / Mug.
    • Bring your own metal utensils, avoid plastic utensils because they have microplastic. Clean your utensils with 99% alcohol or dish soap, scrub manually with your hand, paper towel or sponge then rinse with hot water. Also you can pick up brand new forks that can be cleaned to double check, from Dollar Tree for $1.25
    • Ask for styrofoam To-Go boxes instead of a possibly dirty plate.
    • Look at the bathroom, if it’s too dirty, the kitchen is probably very dirty too.
    • Bring iso alcohol wipes to wipe down the table and seats if you’re extra cautious.

    I’ve always wondered about this I was lowkey kinda scared to see the results cause I eat out quite a bit and I use the silverware at restaurants so this was disgusting 🤮

    I'd still eat all the food bacteria and all. You think our ancestors had "industrial grade dishwashers"? They still survived!

    Thats why i never eat in at restaurants, it’s cheaper and you don’t have to worry about getting sick with whatever diseases that could be there

    • @nope7854
      @nope7854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah because getting a disease at a restaurant is common af

    • @CLF1_16
      @CLF1_16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nope7854 Actually with covid around you’re most likely to contact it. And with bacteria on the silverware that touches the food and you’re mouth. It’s actually pretty common. Not to mention food poisoning

    • @LaVaZ000
      @LaVaZ000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      More likely to get a disease at home than at a luxury restaurant but sure.

    • @nope7854
      @nope7854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CLF1_16 I wouldn't say it's pretty common I would say it can happen but to say it's "pretty common" is a bit overdramatic considering I've eaten at all types of nasty restaurants over the years and haven't gotten sick from them at all.

    I mean, wouldn't the billions of bacteria come because you were transporting the stuff to the lab? What I mean is that once the silverware is transported to the lab for bacteria checks, there would already be billions of bacteria right?
