    Ive been a surgical technologist for two years now I work at a hospital full time doing a lot of ortho and plastic surgery. I’ve work in jewelry sales for 4 years and was extremely successful in sales. I love working in the operating room but I miss working in sales. I would really like to become a medical rep but every time I ask the zimmer, Stryker, etc reps they all just tell me I have to have a bachelors and they just aren’t very helpful at even trying to explain what their job is or what the steps to landing that job are. I know I would do extremely well as a rep some would say I just have a way with people and I get along great with the surgeons I work with. I’m scared to spend time and money working on a bachelors and then not landing a medical sales representative job. What is the reasoning behind needing a bachelors? I have tons of sales experience and tons of operating room experience I already know how to open things sterile and how to move around a sterile field. I understand the implants for totals and fractures and I can read x rays. I just don’t understand what makes someone with zero experience but has a bachelors in something unrelated to the medical field more suitable for that job than myself. I mean I would love to get my bachelors but I’d like to secure a medical sales position first if that was possible.

I have a question - I am interviewing with a company that says they average over 200k a year for their reps - they are a VERY reputable national company. However, in the phone screen, I was informed, it is basically a 1040 gig, all commission and no benefits. I'm not saying I'm definitely landing this role, but am considering it, not just for the earning potential, but that it could lead to my future in med sales. Is this something that is common from what you've seen, and lets say I make 200k, after expenses, medical, car, what am I really netting? Should I wait for a more salaried + commission role?

    Very informal video. I have a question, I just got my MS in Biomedical Engineering with two years of research experience in a university lab. I have no prior sales experience, but I have racked up business classes for various electives. Do you think this would be enough relevant experience to be considered for a Medical Device Sales Rep position?

    • @KolbyWoodMedicalSales
      @KolbyWoodMedicalSales  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The business classes may help, but it will primarily come down to your connections and how well you interview. People are hired every day in this industry without sales experience simply bc they had connections or the people they were interviewing with were convinced they would be good at the job.

      @@lexijackson9940 I would try to get into the industry before going to the medical sales college. Most people hired don't go through there but they can be an asset if you are struggling to get in.

    Love the video Kolby. I am a 23-year-old who just graduated with a bachelor's in business administration and am fortunate enough to have an interview lined up with Smith & Nephew next week. I'm somewhat anxious about this interview because I had no idea what to expect. I was actually excited to find out that a lot of your time is spent in the car or on the go, instead of in an office. Growing up with a sports background, I am accustomed to long days so that shouldn't be a problem. What I am most anxious about is my overall knowledge of orthopedics. I assume I'll get sufficient training but how much did you know about the industry before starting the job? Lastly, what has you found is a good way to get the doctor's attention? Social media, email, phone calls?
    Thanks again for the video. Get back to me if you have time!
    Sam

    • @davidmurillo4755
      @davidmurillo4755 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can major in anything. To be dead honest, I know extremely successful device/med reps who don't even possess a college degree. Yes, having a college degree certainly helps, but it really depends on what school you go to. Some top medical device companies favor graduates from certain schools, it's alumni and politics. This in many cases is also due to internships and for students who have NO selling experience but rather field exposure and REAL experience. My straight up honest advice and 10 years of industry experience.. get as much sales experience as you can during your undergrad. It wont be the selling you use for your future career, but its experience you need to build your resume and add value to a company. Read books on psychology and how to influence others through leadership. Take classes in the life / hardcore sciences to strengthen your biology/anatomy and physics. Be tenacious and dedicated student. Have morals. If you can't get a job in sales during your undergrad, look for part time jobs in healthcare settings (doctor's office who uses products from a company you want to work for.) Most importantly, don't stop applying till you get an interview and crush it.
