Hope you are well. Yes, another pentatonic scale lesson is in order!
I found myself shedding a whole lot of pentatonic scale ideas lately on the piano and I turned to one of my biggest influences on the bass, the one and only, John Patitucci. He's easily one of the most expressive bass players EVER. In this lesson, we take a look at some simple articulation techniques to spice up the very simple pentatonic/blues scale.

sweeps, apogiatures, slides, are one of the keys to good solos on bass. Of course, some "outside" notes helps too... Nice tips!

HI Anthony..nice explanation about variations to approach the pentatonic/blues. You are right, many bass players (as well as players of other instruments) has a tendency to neglect the finer details of pentatonic/blues approach. Keep da GrooVe bro...you take the blues away from Covid19 😷👍

Take this opportunity to ask you what brand of strings does this Jazz Bass have? because they seem with very little tension ideal for the use of the bending.

I'm curious about your right hand technique. It's like you're almost playing a free stroke as your fingers are quite curled. Do you rake like that as well? Does it change whether you're soloing vs. playing a groove. Good job on BNH - you make them sound a bit more Tower of Power compared to how they are with Mr Levi.
AM- I love your lessons! I cannot push the "like" button enough. I'm feeling brave...can I share a story? John once told me that one of his most formative teachers was his older brother, (Michael- who is an excellent jazz and blues guitarist). John said, Michael had encouraged him to check out the phrasing and inflections from the great jazz guitarists for ideas. (George Benson, Earl Klugh, Mundel Lowe, etc.) I can hear it in his playing. It's in the modern bass vocabulary we all speak.
...some of "the vocabulary" comes from playing with Chick :-) Jan Hammer is another guy to pick up interesting intervallic, "inside/outside" blues phrasing ideas from.
Gary Willis also does similar things.

Seems to me Charlie Parker didn't mind using the "spicy pentatonic" approach in some of his solos, too.
Many of the greats made some beautiful melodies with just these simple melodies. It's amazing and kinda hilarious at the same time that something simple could sound so good!
