    I have assassins. I have learned that they can breed with almost any snail they choose to. So what mine was doing was, she was breeding with the bladder snails and laying eggs so then she could eat the babies. It was so gruesome, but also so raw and natural. Assassins gave me a new respect for snails.

    I have an assassin snail. I bought it over two years ago to deal with a terrible pond snail problem. Within 6 months, all the pond snails were gone. What has it been eating since then??? I cant tell you. I don't over feed my fish. I have never seen it eat. Sometimes I don't see it for a month at a time, and I wonder if it is gone, then I will see it hanging out on a piece of drift wood. When it finally goes to that aquarium in the sky, I will get something different, maybe a Nerite, but I have to say that I am pretty impressed with it.

    Thanks for such an informative video. I recently discoverd one that hitched a ride on a patch of grass i purchased along with a few eggs which is good because the bladder snails in my other tanks have laying eggs like crazy. One question I have is if they will still lay eggs even if they arent aren't fertilized by another assassin? Thanks again for the vid

    Hi. How to feed my assassin snails when my fish eats everything until they crawl? Pond snails are eaten all in my tank.

    • @kaitlinwaitlin8554
      @kaitlinwaitlin8554 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a 2 gallon setup specifically for just pond snails & ramshorn snails to breed/live in so I can feed them to my assassins if needed. After a few times of taking them from my big tanks and putting them into the 2 gallon and letting them breed, now theres about a steady 30-50 of them little boogers in there at all times. But water changes are a must on anything that has to do with water or else it starts to stink+ammonia. But that's how I keep food for my assassins.

    I read these snails will burrow in the substrate. I have aqua soil with plants, so was wondering if they burrow inside the soil would it disrupt or dislodge the plants ?

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is highly likely that your plants are well-established and have a strong enough root structure that this small snail wouldn't dislodge them. If they are brand new, you could always use a weight until they develop more roots, but I honestly think they would be fine! They won't eat the roots and are more likely to burrow and then sit in one spot, so shouldn't stir up too much.

  • @Sea-cucumber1151
    @Sea-cucumber1151 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    They will completely keep your snail problem as they don’t eat that often. What is shocking to me they got for the bigger ram horns and not smaller ones. They don’t usually eat the whole thing. So you will find a floating shell usually with some leftover unless the smaller snails finish it off. After they eat one they don’t eat for a while again so you would need a lot to keep them undercontrol.

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! Mine would crawl on top of each other pretty often. But from all the research I've done looking into this when I wanted two as well, was that these snails will die before they eat their own kind.

    Nice video! And just subscribed. 😀
    And I have a question. I bought two a couple of weeks ago and see them move to the top, do some sort of gas exchange (i.e., I see them release a few bubbles), and then move back bottom of the tank. They do this about once a week. I assume that they could breathe air but you said they they don't. Is this normal?

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should be pretty normal! Most fish will blow bubbles from time to time. Not exactly sure the reason/purpose but it is something I’ve seen them all do. :)

    My newly bought Assasin snails are so lazy, I just saw them eat one or two baby Ramshorn and then they just lay on the substrate. I've been using a fertilizer with trace copper, my Ramshorn are doing well but now I'm scared that these trace coppers are making my new snails lethargic but I'm also using a water conditioner with heavy metal neutralizer which the label says it also removes copper.

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe I also used a plant fertilizer with trace coppers and my regular water conditioner and had no issues, so I wouldn’t say that’s what’s causing an issue. They are very small snails, so for them to only eat one snail every few days is normal! If you want rapid results, you have to buy quite a few, otherwise it’s a slow process. It’s also possible they are eating at night, when you aren’t there to see it- this is also pretty common. Also, depending on how new they are, they may just be adjusting to their new home. :)

    • @delonjohnson5907
      @delonjohnson5907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that some cichlids stress them to death. My dovii ignores them and they are showing in that tank. My jaguar picks at them and I have nothing but mts in that tank. Depending on how many you have a antiparacitic need with copper in it should wipe them out and not harm anything else

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are in a country where snail chemicals are legal, you can take that route - you should be able to find them at a fish store. Unfortunately they're not legal where I am (Manitoba, Canada) so I don't have a lot of experience there. I only know that they exist. Like Delon said, you can also use any medicine or tank treatment (like plant fertilizers) that has a lot of copper in it, snails are very sensitive to it. These options will be a lot easier than trying to remove all pond snails (their food), and/or the assassin snails themselves.

    I have one assassn snail who lives with my Betta, I found two babies. The next day the the babies were gone. Is it possible that the Betta ate them?

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly could have been the betta, they will eat small snails! Assassin snails do eat snails as well, but its highly unlikely that these snails will eat their own young (like many species do). So unless they just went back into hiding and only appear to be gone, if they were eaten it would likely have been by the betta.

  • @TheOxna

    I put assassin snails in my tank almost a week ago and they’ve not moved. I sniffed them and they don’t smell dead?! Help!

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Now while I’ll be honest and say I’ve never actually smelled a dead snail so can only take others words on it, my understanding from some past research is a dead snail will also not respond at all to you touching its trap door. If you can touch it and pull it out without ease, or if the snail is hanging out when you pick it up, then unfortunately it is likely gone. 😔Snails will sit in one spot for a few days sometimes, but if it’s been over a week then that is a cause for concern.

  • @joshiewhite
    @joshiewhite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stupid question, but assassin snails are also snails, so... are they going to eat each other? I went to my lfs and they had them but a lot looked dead and I was wondering did they eat each other?

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not a stupid question, I wondered that too when I first got them! Apparently they will eat any and all snails except other assassins. It’s nice that they’re one of the things that won’t eat their own species as you can have more than one to speed the process up.

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From what I’ve read, yes! There have been cases of them killing mystery snails. It’s not as common, as they will prefer the small snails, but since they are kinda opportunistic feeders, they will eat mystery snails if they have to.

    • @BetterBetta

      Assassin snails require a minimum of ten gallons, so a jar will not be good for them. They breathe through the water after all. If you are not interested in keeping the snail, I'm sure their are many fish-keepers in your area who would love them- they're cool little snails.

    • @BetterBetta

      While they generally stick to the smaller snails if they are readily available as they are easier to hunt and kill, they HAVE been known to eat nerites if they’re overly hungry and their food supply is low. They are also more likely to take down the bigger snails if you have a few of them, rather than just one. It’s best to err on the side of caution and not keep these with any other snails (or shrimp).
