They are NOT prolific breeders. You were lucky enough to get a male and a female Assassin. Plus it takes 6 months before their small clutch of eggs emerge from the substrate as tiny snails. My guess is this would have taken a very long time of incestuous behaviour to produce that many. Nice little money maker you ended up with.
The 3 assassins I picked up absolutely cleared up my pest snail situation. One sadly died, one is rampaging right now and the other is literally burying like shown here. Thank you for this content, glad to see some familiar animal behaviour!
Actually, just to clear something up, and to put it in more scientific terms, the tube sticking out of the top of their heads is called a siphon, and they do not eat with it. Rather, they "breath" through it (bring water across the gills) and sniff for prey with it, scanning back and fourth in search of their next meal. It also acts as a snorkel when they burry themselves in substrate. However, they do have another, different tubular apparatus they do eat with. This is called a retractile proboscis, which is a hollow muscular tube that can be moved around like a tiny elephant trunk. The proboscis shoots out of it's mouth, engorged with blood when it's hungry... sort of like a mouth boner I guess. Anyhow at the tip, the proboscis is equipped with yet another retractable apparatus! This time, it's much smaller and more like a tongue. A scraping tongue, with tiny teeth (denticles) on it. This is called the radula. So, the Assassin Snail literally licks it's prey to death with a rasping toothed tongue shooting out of the tip a big fat mouth boner, rending and slurping up flesh and guts from it's victim, lick by lick. Bizarre, fascinating, and grotesque.
Have you seen an assassin snail where the probiscus stays dangling out for hours? Mine is passing the smell test, but not moving (much), siphon is withdrawn, and the probiscus is sticking out and not moving.
my betta did aswell but then got dropsy a month later after the storm :( my family of kuhli loaches made it though! all 14 of them, they even bred after
I really wish I would’ve found this (or done more research ) before I completely got rid of my whole planted aquarium that had over 1,000 pest snails because it was all good until I decided to save the pest snail because I felt bad about letting it face doom 🙄 but this helps and I will buy an assassin from now on if I have another issue
Agreed I have exact same problem. I had a combination of maybe 300-500 ramshorn and pest snails, they were everywhere! Bought four assassin snails. Fast forward 5 months the original snails is virtually zero, every now and then I see a couple of them. But instead I have 100s of assassin snails. Yes they breed slower than the other snails but in the end I still have a large snail problem :(
Thanks for all the first hand info. I'd never trust them with my nerites. The Goldfish eventually take care of all my unwanted snail issues, but it looks like a good option for all the tropical folks.
Assassin snails can, and will take down larger snails. Nerites, mysteries, etc. I had three mystery snails, and about 30+ ramshorns. 10 assassins(we though we only had four--I have sand substrate, and they like to burrow) wiped out all the ramshorns, and then ganged up on the three mystery snails. I've never seen assassins going for fish. If your fish dies, and settles, they'll eat it. I lost 15-20 ghost shrimp to assassin snails. You wanna make sure you have feeder snails, or protein feed to keep shrimp with them. They're predator snails, carnivorous. They actively hunt for protein. There's no real way to tell which are male, or female. You'll see one or two on the side of one. They're having sex, or trying to have sex. I've noticed my males are usually smaller, and the female is usually larger. That's not how they are, it's just I always see smaller males going after larger females to procreate. They'll breed between 75-82 degrees, and well fed. If there's not enough protein for more, they'll stop breeding.
100%. Thought I removed all my assassins from a 10g nano tank. Put in a Nerite. Inside of 5 min I saw two yellow shells pop out. They went right for the nerite. I ended up pulling the assassins out and moving them to my 40g. Also have seen them take down ghost shrimps as well.
@@OneMindEveryWeapon Thanks for this share. I'll remove my Nerite Snails first and then get a male Assassin Snail and put him into this 10G to clean out the Bladder Snails. Or, just use the Chemical Treatment on the Plants that I buy before placing them into a Plant Quarantine Tank. I am planning on setting up a Plant Quarantine Tank and will get at least one Assassin Snail for that tank. To me, this is being pro-active. Thanks again.
They seem to help reduce the numbers, but you need a lot of Assassins to do any good as the Ram's Horn breed faster than they can suck 'em outta the shell. And I don't know if they want to finish off all their source of food.
@@madcat61207My assassin snails have cleared an overpoulated 10 gal of bladder, ramshorns, and MTS in 6-7 months. Now overpopulated with assassin snails *sigh*, back to square one.

You read my mind and answered my question. Rams horn snail population control and you said tank size and how many per gallon snail . Thank you very good video.
When I had a bladder snail problem in my 29-gallon tank my first solution was yoyo loaches. In 4 days that wiped out every visible snail and I thought I was good. The main fish in the tank were female bettas, neons albino corydoras and dwarf frogs. Because I heard that yoys can be aggressive as they get bigger, I moved them to a 55-gallon with large fish (rainbow praecox koi bettas and some huge corys). When the snails came back I purchased a few assassin snails. They have kept the invasion in check, but don't seem to be winning the war yet. I don't need them all dead, but just don't want them to become a distraction to what I'm building as a community and aquascape.
I started off with one, increased it to four. One died and set off an ammonia bomb, lost two fish in the same day - my plecco and my puffer. I have two assassins left. I enjoyed your video, and thanks for all the info. I only have one assassin snail and I'm just wanting to know the best way to care for it before I get anymore. You may already have found an answer to the question of pronunciation, but in case not, I can help. The first syllable rhymes with "buck," as in a dollar bill. "I have twenty bucks." The last syllable is pronounced the way you pronounced it in the video. It's a medical term which describes the lining of the inside of the mouth (buccal mucosa), and is also used by dentists to describe certain cavities (buccal cavity). Anyway, thanks again for the useful information. I enjoyed your video.

I just put two in my tank for my pond snail infestation. Should I be worried about them breeding too much? I have a ten gallon filled with snails that have been devouring my plants :(
It has been my experience that the assassin snails cohabitate with common pond snails and don’t do a fantastic job of controlling them. When they do breed you will have hundreds.

It's a medical term which describes the lining of the inside of the mouth (buccal mucosa), and is also used by dentists to describe certain cavities (buccal cavity). Anyway, thanks again for the useful information. I enjoyed your video.
Got Nerite snails with Assasins and they are fine
My Assassin Snail Love the other snails by not eating them sometimes the baby ram snails hump on his back and give them a free ride. what's wrong with my Assassin Snail. he's the only one I got from the Pet store :(
Maybe you need more if they are too outnumbered.
I just put two in my tank for my pond snail infestation. Should I be worried about them breeding too much? I have a ten gallon filled with snails that have been devouring my plants :(
Update ?
Update? Did it work?
It has been my experience that the assassin snails cohabitate with common pond snails and don’t do a fantastic job of controlling them. When they do breed you will have hundreds.
Buccal is pronounced Buck-ul.
Enjoyed your video, thanks.
