      Amygdala

    • @JjangJjangManBboongBboong
      @JjangJjangManBboongBboong ปีที่แล้ว +64

      *I have a request* SUGA just dropped another MV for "Amygdala"... It's a very personal track for him. He have talked about his traumas. I hope you give it a shot!
      Before you react to Amygdala:
      SUGA mentions about his shoulder injury for which he went for surgery in 2020.
      He had an accident in 2012 while working part time and lied about it in fear that the company might not let him debut with that case. Suga lied to his band members that he had fallen down the stairs, when in fact, he had an accident. “I was riding the bike, when I got hit at the intersection. The next day, I couldn't move my shoulder." said SUGA.
      P.s-The amygdala is an almond-shaped structure that lies in the brain. The amygdala is responsible for the perception of emotions such as anger, fear, and sadness, as well as the controlling of aggression. It's also a center for creating memories and trauma.

    I can’t imagine how tough it is keeping up with the lyrics, the visuals, absorbing the production and things happening in the mix ALL while not knowing the language. You really don’t get enough credit. That’s tough and yet you still do more in-depth and intuitive breakdowns than the majority! We’ve all had the chance to watch over and over haha. I’m glad you looked up Haegeum, sometimes it’s needed and I’m sure now others have said that you were also spot on with the other meaning. You’re the man and I appreciate what you said about BTS and ARMY, and the way we get treated. You’re a very special friend and ally, long may that continue 💜 Fantastic reaction!

    I'm impressed how quickly you catch on to the meaning of BTS' songs. You are correct in your interpretation of Haegeum. It is traditional Korean instrument but it can also be translated to mean "unlocking something that is forbidden". This is the way he uses it in this song. Great reaction! I hope you react to his other songs from this album as well. They are all amazing.

      Knox is almost spooky in his ability to figure out this stuff - I remember how much he pulled out of Daechwita on the first watch. And Suga likes to use layers of meaning, not really subtle but interwoven... Which seems to be how Knox thinks too. I always look forward to these 😁

    • @Samson16436
      @Samson16436 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's more accurately translated to "lifting a ban" (it has a more political nuance, from my understanding)

    • @berthalichus
      @berthalichus ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is most normal for Knox to catch the meanings because he need to enable one phrase with another hence he is a rapper. Fast thinking, the other thing, the language, but we Armys know how the messages go trough and connect with the emotions and the vibe, and research for culture stuff so we can have the better picture.

  • @superwho9458
    @superwho9458 ปีที่แล้ว +286

    It so interesting going through these comments and seeing that Knox introduced many people to BTS because BTS introduced me to Knox. Talk about coming full circle. I've always liked how he breaks down their songs and was able to get the deeper meaning that was intended. Also haegeum is used in 2 ways, one is the traditional Korean string instrument because it's used in the instrumentation of the song and the other being "to lift a ban" (in the words of RM in the most recent episode of Suchwita) for obvious reasons

  • @Treycrete
    @Treycrete ปีที่แล้ว +60

    Yoongi said earlier that Haegeum isn’t exactly a “kind” song and he wondered to what lengths the lyrics would be taken when translated into other languages. He also said that he struggled to find the project folder containing haegeum to resume working on it (he’d finished the beat 3 years ago). It wouldn’t come up when he searched “haegeum” on his computer but later found that it was because he had named it 딥빡 (“Pissed af”) 😂 He was like “there must’ve been something back then that i was super angry about or something”. What a lad haha.

    Suga said he did this storyboard right after Daechwita. He does storytelling so well! I keep finding new things and connections the more I watch. I also read that the market place in the mv is in Thailand and that the place is called: The "thief Market" and it was the first international shopping center after the abolition of slavery there. Apparently the market came to exist because The people freed from the palace brought goods they were given or had stolen from their former masters to sell them in this area. Thus "the thief market". This puts more into perspective and matches so well with the theme of liberation!

    Your brain amazes me. What you said at the end was so intelligent and eye-opening. Wow. I’d also add that I think the first verse is a lot deeper than at first glance. When he says ‘Freedom of expression could be the cause of someone’s death. Would you consider that freedom?’ I think a lot on how many use the cover of free speech to say the most awful things. He really went in on this and I know you’ll love the lyrical content of the whole album. Is that a possibility maybe? Much love and thank you!!

  • @xRaptorScreamx

    Cinematography is so good, it takes from Old Boy (korean version), Hong Kong Cinema mostly, Shang Chi a bit (flashback fight scene), Joker (burning the money and hanging outside the car), and Scarface (in bath with money).
    It's him showing that he owns the streets, not the corrupt cop. Also, in the song that just dropped, Amygdala, it shows what the scar means, in both this and Daechwita.
    And since it's an Agust D track, and he can say/do whatever he wants, outside of idol "standards", swearing now is normal, but he smokes ... which would be a big no no in K-Pop, for them to be seen smoking, even tattoos (even though JK has a sleeve, and Jimin has moons on his back)
    The Haegum is a two-string Korean fiddle, and also it's an expression "to lift the ban on something"

    • @gerwinpot4230
      @gerwinpot4230 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The smoking is also un unlocking of something that is some kind of forbidden. What i understood was that something he wanted to show but you can ofcourse put another subject instead smoking.

      Yes to the HK cinema feels. I grew up watching John Woo movies with Chow Yun Fat and this was almost the same gritty feel of those. But the chopsticks ofc was totally John Wick-esque, don't give the man some pencils lol 😆 😂

      The smoking scene in the mv I feel tho is shots fired for those haters lambasting Tae for that leaked photo on Grammys, and Kook for that alleged vape (they got pretty plenty of hate for that from armys themselves and other fandoms). Yoongi hyung to the rescue, blatantly, in your face lighting up a cigarette, shutting up those haters. The crux of the matter is that we, as FANS, should really mind our own business. They are grown men, we have no right to tell them stop this, stop that. Let us not be entitled. They are adults. They know what is right and wrong for them. We are here for their music and their message of positivity. We are not here to meddle in their personal lives. So I am really glad that Yoongi did this scene, so people can smell the coffee and touch some grass.

    Ufff! You’re actually as genius as Min Yoongi ! The visuels, the bars (rythm and essence), the parallels, the breaking down is incredibly thorough and fast ! I’ve always been impressed by your reactions, but this one is mirroring your statement on this Agust D’s MV : it’s a masterpiece !

  • @musicislife9744
    @musicislife9744 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    My man out here destroying all other reactors 🔥 What a breakdown! What an mv and track! Agust D upset a loooottt of people with his anti-capitalist lyrics. “But he’s part of the problem” “He makes a lot of money now”. So much ignorance. Someone spends their whole childhood in a working class family with no support for his music, then joins a company that's going bankrupt and suffers for years before succeeding against all odds. Just because BTS became a one in a billion success story, it doesn’t mean that they can no longer acknowledge reality and criticise the system. If we take the chopsticks symbolism into play - he is saying at the end that he’s part of the system too. There’s a difference. I love music!

    • @maryr1905
      @maryr1905 ปีที่แล้ว

      My take on this “anti-capitalism” theme people talk about is that Haegum isn’t about being against capitalism - which allows people to be free to pull themselves to any height- but the corruption of the capitalist system. Power and self-indulgence replaces freedom and fairness for all.

  • @conepao
    @conepao ปีที่แล้ว +56

    There are a lot of hidden meanings in the mv. First, the word heugum, it is an instrument, but it also means to liberate something in Korean. Those chopsticks mean you kill to eat, and you eat to live. The two different characters are also important, Agust D is also someone that breaks the rules but he works for the police so people don't judge him and then you have the other Agust D that breaks the rules, kills and do whatever he wants without trying to hide it under a mask. Finally, he killing Agust D is his way of ending the trilogy

  • @erivera9313
    @erivera9313 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I agree with your assertion about over indulgence on social media because many TH-cam accounts I follow have gone into hiatus because their creator has had to deal with mental issues and mental health. What you said about likes and views is 100% accurate. To hear children talk about how many views or likes their post has received is hard to comprehend. This generation isn't being raised by parents, they are being raised by electronic devices and the internet. They then suffer from depression and many do stupid things that lead to violence causing many to be harmed. It's a vicious circle we live in.

    He has apparently said in an interview: "The word “Haegeum” came to me when I was young. I played rhythm games, I loved rhythm action games. When beating a certain stage, you’d unlock a forbidden song, then you could play a new rhythm. It was a “freedom from the forbidden.” Why don’t I try and break free from those things?"
    I also googled if the instrument was used here and yes it was, in the beginning of the song.

  • @suga_agustd_yoongi
    @suga_agustd_yoongi ปีที่แล้ว +11

    yoongi (agust d) was the sole writer and producer of this track it really is a masterpiece. I really liked your thoughts. another way I interpret the chopsticks at the end is how it could be a reference to "eating from (the same) dirty spoon" and that could be on how he's been criticised in the past for speaking about anti-capitalism whilst being a rich and famous person. he is at the end of the day a part of the system he is criticising (which is how it is supposed to be imo because you can't criticise something you haven't experienced/are not a part of otherwise it seems in-genuine and out-of-touch). I think he is saying that at the end of the day he is also part of this dirty system and his spoon is also dirty (like the capitalists) and he just very self-aware because if he isn't going to criticise it, who is?
    I hope this makes sense I am very bad at explaining stuff in English.

    So glad you reacted to this! I love all your insights, you just have a way with interpreting lyrics so quick and in such an interesting and articulate way.
    Okay, so 'haegeum' actually has 2 meanings in Korean. Yes, it is a two-stringed instrument heard in the mix, but it also has another meaning of "lifting a ban and allowing something that is forbidden," as IU explained when she interviewed Agust D. So you actually had the right idea at first, but looking up the meaning only gave you one definition, lol.
    Love the reaction! Cannot wait to see what you think of 'Amygdala' by Agust D (MV just dropped today!).

  • @geniusstudio9563

    Yess so aswell as being an instrument Haegeum has another meaning of ‘lifting the ban/freeing something’ so you were spot on!! This is kind of like a continuation of Daechwita and he’s JUST released a new mv which concludes the Agust D trilogy and links to this mv and Daechwita storylines. Knox you will love his new album too! It’s really got me in my thoughts man.

    My Monday has been saved!!! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this. I just know this is going to be good! That excited that I’m commenting before watching 😅 He’s just dropped another mv that’s the conclusion to this particular Agust D trilogy (Daechwita - Haegeum -Amygdala) and it’s heartbreaking. It’s about his real experiences and I think you’ll have a lot to say from a mental health aspect. The album is 10 songs of brilliance. Some stuff has really hit me pretty hard. Thank you Yoongi for your music 💜

  • @Maltymalt2025
    @Maltymalt2025 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Exceptional breakdown 👏 It’s also worth noting that one of the reasons this is a conclusion to Agust D is that he doesn’t feel that his anger rules him as much as it did when he created this ‘alter ego’ as it were. He is at a point where he wants to break down the barriers of what stops him being completely himself, and saying what he wants as Min Yoongi or Suga of BTS. Suga said earlier in Suchwita that he wants BTS to last for as long as possible and I think he wants to have the freedom as himself without using a persons to do so. Much as they all do and will do when they return in 2025. For the time being, Agust D’s chapter is closed but when the “black goat in the right hand wakes up again” he will return (Suga’s words).

    I'd like to make an observation that most people don't notice: Suga always shows duality in every mv he makes, most of the time by playing two characters. There's always a conflict between the two of them. One of the characters always has a scar on his eye. I interpret that as an identifier to the character that represents his shadow self, the side of him that carries the traits he fights against, like greed, pride, shame, pain, trauma. And he's always attacking and defeating his shadow self, in other words, he's always attacking and defeating the traits that could turn him into a monster, as he says in "The Last"

    Thank you so much for dissecting this masterpiece. It's rare these days to find people who actually care for the meanings behind the songs. I also want to point out that this is agust d freedom song, he's not representing kpop which are their shackles. The industry usually condemn smoking, gore, and taking about real world problems. I love how these boys don't give a shit.
    They could literally dominate the charts with generic pop that are for all audiences but this song and album are only for the few who really cares of what's important. Hip-hop should be like this, not about the cars and bitches.

    An excellent second instalment of the Agust D trilogy and a great rap analysis as always. Thank you.
    Freedom, self indulgent: There is a word in Korean and some other Asian languages which describe something that can’t be translated into English. The type of freedom which ENCROACHES ON THE WELLBEING OF OTHERS.
    HAEGEUM = traditional Korean string instrument similar to one in Japan and China = Lifting of Bans / Releasing From Restrictions.
    Location = Thief Alley, China Town, Thailand (where freed slaves traded their stolen and gifted goods)

  • @sugabaaabe93

    Thanks always, Knox! I've got hooked to BTS more after watching your reactions and got curious with the BU because of you. The cop Agust D was the rebel Agust D in Daechwita, but as time goes by he became a corrupt cop and maybe the money SUGA burned down was the bribes. Yes, the other one is SUGA as there is no scar and he then ended Agust D because he's being corrupt. I love how Yoongi always kills the part of him who's getting greedy and how he always stays grounded. This D-Day is the last of the trilogy of Agust D and the start of his new chapter as SUGA or Min Yoongi. He named it D-Day because it's the time he's liberating himself from the shackles in his life and starting anew. He no longer has anger and he's finally at peace with himself. I'm so glad that he's now finally happy. Thank you again for an amazing reaction and I hope you can do the rest of the album 'cause every track is so good and we need your analogy too and tell us what you think. 😅😂

    I’m just now realizing he also slung over his shoulder what looks like the uniform jacket that belongs to the cop version of himself when he gets outta the cop car to order noodles….possibly indicating him being all the characters in one person at the same time?? And this new rhythm has a positive outcome given the final choices made and he’s inviting us to get on board. Like instead of killing the guy, now he’s eating noodles. With the same chopsticks. A new haegum. Wow. Knox, you’re incites are rubbing off on me🫢I mean I could be wrong🤷🏻‍♀️but that just came to me💜great reaction; I learned a lot!!

    Oh another thing, you’ll notice Yoongi is smoking in this. That’s a hugely controversial thing to do on camera in Korea, especially for Idols. He’s talked in interviews about the pressures idols have to appear perfect and he has acknowledged BTS have changed that perception a bit and hopes him doing things like this will make it easier for others. So you can tie the smoking in with ‘freedom from what’s banned’ too. So much depth!!

  • @ZariDV

    How is Knox so consistently perceptive every damn time? He always picks up on things that it would take other reactors 3 watches to half-way get. You just get it. You don't ever try to downplay it like "Oh I'm probably reading too much into this, it's probably not that deep." You let your imagination take everything in and make connections oranically. It's good that you got the 2nd meaning of Haegeum even though your google search only gave you one meaning. That in itself sort of feeds into the idea in the song that, it's not enough to simply rely on the influx on info. It's not enough to just take things at face value and ignore your own mind and imagination and perspective. You saw another meaning slipped in there and respected your train of though enough to see it as valid instead of letting the internet search talk you out of what you interpreted with your own mind.

    the chopsticks!! i've always wondered why use a chopstick when he could've used any other type of utensil or tool, but i just realized that it's another haegeum in itself: 2 sticks like the 2 strings in a real haegeum. and don't forget the 2 different ways the chopsticks were used: at first for self-indulgence of stabbing the guy in the beginning, but then used for eating the noodles at the end- nourishing oneself like knox said. the duality in this mv and the man himself is seriously insane.

  • @Rx2D

    Wonderful reaction, as always. I think the ending scene with the chopsticks represents an unbroken cycle. In Daechwita, commoner Suga kills the tyrant king Suga and in Haegum, the commoner becomes the new “mafia boss”-one who’s just as swept up in greed, power, money, etc, and is just as corrupt as the king he overthrew. The commoner became the very thing he fought against.
    In Haegum, someone (let’s call him Joker Suga) steps up to overthrow the mafia boss. And he does. And the reason Commoner/Boss Suga smirks before he’s killed is because he knows that history is just going to repeat itself, and the cycle will continue.
    And it does. Joker Suga becomes the new boss. Even though he’s committed a crime, he’s basically given a lift to a restaurant by the police-who are now in his pocket (corruption). He knowingly eats with the same chopsticks he used to kill an underling of the former Boss, while carrying the former Boss’ jacket over his shoulder. It’s a symbol of the continuing cycle and a sign that Joker Suga Will one day become someone who will need to be brought down.
    I also think it’s a commentary on the trap of capitalism. What harms one person, benefits another. We’re all guilty of benefiting from the pain and exploitation of others. One person suffers so another may eat. We’re all hypocrites in a capitalist society.
    And finally, it’s a criticism (and warning) of human nature in general. If you look into the abyss, the abyss looks into you. If you’re not careful and don’t constantly check yourself, you may fall victim to the same behaviors you once condemned or sought to destroy. If you’re too narrow-minded and prideful, you may become the very thing you hate.
