Wish they’d made the LHDs capable of embarking 24 F35Bs each on delivery from the outset. Having the ships capable of dual amphibious or light carrier duties would be a game changing capability for the ADF. It would have required a larger AWD fleet which sure would be handy right now. But governments are short sighted as ever.
They are not able to support flight operations due to the way they were designed and ordered but obtaining a mid size carrier like the Italians or even Japanese as dedicated carrier would work well

We only going to build 8 for $1 billion, and they will be unarmed as the US has refused to supply integrated weapons systems. Boeing took Australia's development money, using what Australia paid for to develop a similar fully armed platform for the USA, and Australia will be forced to buy it so it integrates with all the other US weapons systems we already have. Meanwhile the RAN now has formerly able submarines that are past their use by date, and the Anzacs, and too few Hobart AWDs. The RAN should have bought the second RFA Largs Bay class LSD to compliment the Choules when it went up for sale for a bargain $60 million AUD. The RAN having 2x LHDs and 2x Choules would have made for a phenomenal pocket sized amphibious assault ship force. The Regular Army still having no IFVs, C-RAM, BMD, SP artillery and rotary wing aviation; and being unable to maintain 7 under-strength rifle battalions with a population of >27 million people is shameful.
It was stated early in the program that they can't be retrofitted for fixed wing as it wasn't part of the design to allow for it. The ramps were kept solely because they're required for structural integrity without a massive redesign.
@ Well, that was IZUMO and KAGA before, a Helicopter Carrier. they retrofit it to fit the F35B’s. I dont see why they cant do that with the HMS Canberra. I mean both are Helicopter Carriers before in the case of KAGA and Izumo and still now as HMS Canberra designated.

They Should retrofit their HMS Camberra to accomodate F35B Vertical take off fighter jet just like JMSDF with their IZUMO and KAGA.
