Great video and recording. Houghs performance is very improvisatory which surprised me. Absolutely fantastic sound. Could I ask what microphones were used? I am about to record this nocturne but it will be a digital recording. I’m looking for a mic set up for my Steinway.
We use a variety of microphones at Tippet Rise and a lot as we record in Auro3D format. So the main array is 9 microphones by itself. For this concert the front 3 main mics are Schoeps MK2H capsules with CMC6 amplifers. The surrounds at DPA4041a microphones. Heights are DPA4006a with 50mmAPE on them. We then put a pair of DPA4006a in a sort of ORTF setup close to the piano which you can see on camera. And if you look closely there is a pair of DPA4060a microphone in the piano as well.
For a stereo mix I generally do not use all of the microphones. Mainly just the mains and sometimes some of the front heights and spot microphones for texture/detail.
Everything is recorded in DXD384 using Merging Technology converters and Grace Design m108 microphone preamps.
I love this man, as an artist and as a human being; but he just doesn’t Chopin justice. Too loud, too clear and too not Chopin.
I get sick to death of hearing from this pianist: his over exposure means that so many better pianists are rarely if ever heard! And what the hell has he got on his feet???!
