    Do you add any bacteria product or enzymes to keep the group from clogging up from sludge or food debris?

    Hi I have this for my kitchen sink. Do you use any bacteria or enzymes product to help break down the food particles? And have you had any issues? Please let me know, thanks

    Great idea.However, did you placed a cover or swing gate on the top of the pipe to prevent rottens or small mamals to fall inside.

    Why do you need a vent tube going to the surface? Is it because you'll have kitchen sink meat scraps etc going down into the barrel ?

    how does this holds up when there are rain that saturate the ground

    • @Mandalaman
      @Mandalaman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it does saturate sometimes but because I made a couple of mistakes. the main one being that i should have put down about 30cm of gravel under it maybe twice the width of the barrel. In theory you should measure the drainage rate of your soil when saturated so that you can then calculate how big the barrel or air gap needs to be.

    My grandpa put cesspool about 100 feet from house (layer barn tin over)in about 20 years when it filled up moved about another 25 downstream and dug new hole and reused barn tin ,threw new dirt in old hole

    Will you help me understand what the point of the tube sticking out of the ground is for? Is that to allow air to escape?

      hi, its just an inspection port.

  • @kimc4945
    @kimc4945 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    you would have better results if you would have put down a layer of gravel about 12 inches deep

    • @Mandalaman
      @Mandalaman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you are correct!
      we had to re direct the washing machine away from it this winter when the ground was saturated with water because it wasnt draining fast enough...
      Luckily the washing machine was only a temporary thing and this is just going to be for the kitchen sink. It should be able to cope with that amount of water no problem.

    Your soil looks like it wont percolate well for a septic system.
    Yes,the gravel layer would be good next time.

      @Mandalaman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, you are right. it doesnt. I have a machine coming soon to dig it up and will have it dig about 40cm deeper than the barrel and 2x wide and long and fill it with big rocks and gravel.

      in theory you should build a grease trap but also the micro organisms should go breaking down any organic matter in there too.

      julian Baberze yeah, my soil gets pretty water logged in winter and it doesnt drain amazingly. I should have put gravel down as someone else has pointed out.

    What happens when it fills up with rotting bits of food that accumulate over time. This system is wrong for it's intended purpose. It should be built like a standard septic system with a drain field for the water that passes through. The rain barrel serving as the main containment unit that periodically must be pumped.

    • @Mandalaman
      @Mandalaman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the food gets broken down by bacteria, worms etc. there is nothing worng with this system, it works perfectly.

  • @allthings2allmen

    This music is pleasantly annoying...is that possible? It hearkens to the old school arcade games & I must say it fits the project in a very weird way. Says something about your sense of humour. Certainly not the everyday TH-cam 'film score'. But if you were to re-upload this video with truly annoying music & add the word 'HACK' to the end of the title...nevermind have a nice day & thanks for the info & great video!

    This is completely unacceptable for a Gray Water System, and grossly inadequate in terms of size. Typically, for a Kitchen Sink and/or Automatic Dishwasher you install a 300 to 500 gallon capacity drywell... that's Dry Well. A 55 gallon plastic drum is so small and undersized, it's not even funny, and it won't last long... maybe 2 or 3 years. Not to mention, you need lots of crushed stone or gravel for proper drainage of the gray water, usually 2 to 3 tons of stone.

  • @tysondundas1947
    @tysondundas1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't mind the music so much but the fundamental lack of respect for the earth bothers me. No grease trap and no real understanding as to how septic tanks actually work. I could also imagine the soil will either wash in or the barrel will collapse over time with the weight of soil. The one small meeting serface with the soil acts as grease trap, biological processing and for dispersion. As others have pointed out the meeting face in the tank will fill with food, grease, debris and soap forming a stinking bacterial scum barrier.
