      +Kentucky Woodsman The initial idea wasn't mine but I made a few of my own changes. Thanks so much!

    I've seen filters in where your bucket is with straw in a wire basket to filter out grease and food, etc. Easy to change! Thanks for this. Great ideas.

      We will have to check those out. In the mean time we do not dump grease and we have a large stainless colander over it to keep out food and other debris which we then clean and dump in the garbage. Thanks for watching!

    Good job.
    Like others suggested it should be totally below the frostline. It will freeze solid when the cold comes in.

    Job well done....I like how it's basic and simple....the only thing I'm wanting to do would be to prepare my own charcoal for the charcoal part....is that even possible?

  • @JanColdwater
    @JanColdwater 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I am confused. If the water is going into the empty bucket in the middle & being filtered through the bottom, how is it not going to wash away the sand as the water moves up and out?

  • @mikealexander4166

    Your comment about climate change moved me. It’s is scary to think that first no snow then now water. Good luck with your project. I hope it is sustainable into the future. I pray to the lord Jesus Christ everyday that things will turn around and become normal again.

    • @acoupleofpreppers
      @acoupleofpreppers  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We clean out the bucket now and then but have never emptied it out. it seems to be working well though for our temporary setup. I'm sure after time it will need to be changed out. thanks so much for watching, have a great day.

    So if the grey water you direct after use isn't saved for any water purposes why is directed out and into this filtering system? Do you have a septic tank where you are? Is it best to not fill septic with excess water? Just not informed as to why this system is favorable to direct water into ground unless watering garden or landscape? Thanks for being patient with my learning curve.

    • @acoupleofpreppers
      @acoupleofpreppers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We were using this system because there was no septic in the area. Our only option was to build something in order to not damage the land from using soaps, etc. Thanks for watching!

    I hope it does not freeze for you.

    • @acoupleofpreppers
      @acoupleofpreppers  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheAnnoyingThingOutdoors Yeah we're trying to figure out a way to keep the snow out and besides pouring hot water in now an then not sure what to do about it freezing. Hopefully being in the ground will help a bit even though I know it's not fully under the frost line. It's all trial and error lol, if anyone has any tips we'd be glad to hear hem. Thanks for watching have a great day.

      +acoupleofpreppers Some people use styrofoam around their flowerpots. I don't know how it will work with water, usually the plant is almoust dried out, and the plant must have some cold weather ability.
      So a box with styrofoam inside maybe? some gravel around the box too maybe.
      And a lid with styrofoa:-) m too.
      Blankets will freeze stiff.
      Although, I am no expert about it, just sharing some thoughts. :-)

    • @TheAnnoyingThingOutdoors1
      @TheAnnoyingThingOutdoors1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did it work out for you?
      I know Styrofoam is not exactly environment friendly but I guess there is something that works similar (i just don't know what it is called in either language).

      @acoupleofpreppers  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far we had some freezing but not as much as expected definitely need some upgrades for next winter. it's still filtering good though, it's all been a learning process and all the tips and ideas from everyone really help out. thanks for commenting, have a great night.

      I would love to, but we're actually not on that property anymore. It worked quite well though (if you're willing to take our word for it). With being a very small version (of something that can be made much larger) you had to be careful of how much you dumped in at a time. And when dumping certain water, especially kitchen water, I added a strainer over the top to sift out any food scraps etc and then dumped those else where. Thanks so much for watching and sorry we couldn't help you out. Enjoy the rest of your day ~Stephanie

      Thanx WindyCedarFarm for your info 💜 I've heard hay is great for food catchment & grease.
      Im Just hunting round for natural filtration to assist with a permaculture banana circle compost system. The principle is obviously banana trees in a circled compost heap, alongside is cassava & taro plants (for their rapid water absorption qualities)
      with citronella & lemon grass for pests (mosquito repellent)
      Worth checking out 👍😎

    • @acoupleofpreppers
      @acoupleofpreppers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds very interesting. I've been becoming more interested in different types of permaculture and have been researching and trying to learn more. I will definitely have to check this out. Thank you for the info as well :)

    You are using too much of close up, which blocks me from having a fair idea of from where the water is coming from, where the water is growing and such things. Kindly use some long shots as well to better understand the system

    • @acoupleofpreppers
      @acoupleofpreppers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your input. I would love to add more footage, but we actually no longer live on this property. You can easily add water into the top of the 5 gallon buckets (or run a drainage hose into the bucket - add a strainer if large food particles will be coming through). There is an overflow slot that runs into a 15-20 foot drainage trench (similar to a leach field), fill this trench with an decreasing grade (large to small) of things like rocks/pebbles, wood chips/shavings, sand etc. Thank you so much for watching and have a great Sunday! God bless ~Stephanie
