Really really angry that rather than serve his time and possibly be granted parole, he took a coward's way out in all things possible: by taking people hostage and threatening to kill them and probably would have killed them if things didn't go his way, and by committing suicide later on. Any justice in this universe, he's paying for it in the next life.
I agree with you there. I think that if the man had obeyed the rules he could have possibly gotten his sentence reduced and maybe gotten an early parole. Even though the man was a convicted felon serving a long term prison sentence he could have still turned his life around and led a better life. I think that the man cheated himself out of several years of life by committing suicide. It is scary that he took an elderly couple hostage and used the man in the pick up truck for a hostage. It is nice to to know that the lady survived and that the hostage survived. It is sad that the lady's husband passed away. I think that Michael Otti has a high regard for human life along with Gary. It is good that this story had a happy ending except for the inmate commiting suicide

It’s been 39 years since this happened. It happened on a Monday and the year I was born. But it was 2 months and 26 days before my birth. May and Leo are both in heaven.
I was 4 when that happened and haven't started Pre-School yet until the fall of 1982. Just about 40 years ago this year. May must have passed several years later. Leo must have passed a year or two at the end of the story.
That inmate was a cold hearted jerk. He did not appear to have any regard for human life. It's really sad that he threatened an elderly couple. It's really bad that he committed suicide. He could have turned his life around. He made so many bad choices. It's really sad
If the date was May 3rd of 1982 and I imagine that the older lady May Lamont has passed on long time ago. Don't know when and when her husband did. They didn't say the date.
3:38-4:14. It’s a good thing the OTHER inmates did help the guard and not try to make a run to escape. If they did, there’s a chance they would get caught on the outside, and their time in prison would be extended or cost them their chances of parole.
I can't even imagine being the person or people at the house where the corrections van driver went to use the telephone with all the prisoners with him on foot.
If Freddy took Michael Ottie hostage with a knife, any other of the guy's could have done the same!!! They may be in medium security, but they could all be extremely dangerous!!! If Freddy had a rep. for instability--he should have never been allowed out of the prison!!

That surprises me too but these inmates had earned work privileges and what is known as a trustee status. That inmate who took Officer Otti hostage violated his trustee status. He could have still turned his life around and possibly gotten an early release and gotten a job but he chose not to follow the rules. He made an unwise decision to end his life
