1984 was my favorite novel for the longest time. My original copy from High School (let's not discuss how long ago that was) is falling apart and covered in highlighter and notes. I went on a blind date once where agreed to meet and we would both be carrying copies of 1984 since it was our favorite book.

Lear,Tolstoy and the fool is a brilliant essay beautifully discussed. His collected letters, essays and journalism is excellent because everything is in context as no biography of him could be written because George Orwell requested in his will that no biography of him should be written. Another great essay is confessions of a book reviewer

You should read the Road to Wigan Pier. It's a nonfiction book detailing the time he became a miner to understand the life of the British working class.

I definitely need to check out more of Orwell's work. He can successfully wrinkle brains. XD THAT MUG. I WANT THAT MUG. I love the orange penguin book/merch designs but it's hard to find at my local bookstores :| I really want to get my hands on the "censored" penguin cover of 1984. XD Great haul!

Fun fact: George Orwell wrote A Road to Wigan Pier; just off a road across from Wigan Pier is The Orwell. Most people would call the area where the Orwell actually stands Wigan Pier, but the actual pier is a very small coal tipping ramp at the opposite side of the canal.

"Politics and the english language" is an amazing essay. It's a bit too hard till you get to the middle but it's worth the struggle. It basically deals with the fact that politics pollutes in a very literate way the english language. And let alone the fact that it was written in 1944, so that's 70 years ago. It just shows how little we've grown and much worse we're getting in keeping any language pure and unpolluted. I'm a native bulgarian speaker and i found so many things in common with our politics and our language and i think everyone would find something they relate to because the essay is so universal. I highly, highly recommend it, it's one of the most interesting things i've ever come across.

Cool video! I was in high school in 1984 so almost all of the English classes read the novel 1984. Somehow I ended up in a class with a different book. Years later while thumbing through a friends bookshelf I ran across this book. Read it right away and loved it. I recently bought a paperback copy of it and plan to tackle it again soon.

I read 1984 a few years ago but will need to re-read it some time because back then, little old me was so appalled by the things that happened that I wasn't able to process the story very well lol. I finally read Animal Farm a few days ago, and wow. It's really amazing how his ideas are as relevant as ever in today's society. As for me, my author idol is Vladimir Nabokov. His prose is absolutely breathtaking, and I plan on reading everything of his I can get my hands on.

I have read animal farm and nineteen eighty four. The structure of animal farm was from his first wife Eileen o'shaughnessy and the first time I read anything of his. Later I read his most famous book. I did not understand some of the points made at the time but now it's become more and more clear how important they are. I have also read many of his essays, letters and book reviews which are very informative and give a very good picture of how ideas were developing at the time. More recently I read the observer years which is his journalism of that paper and another book of more recently discovered letters. Most of all I would VERY strongly recommend reading his essay Lear,Tolstoy and the fool which although at first sight does not appear to say much is extremely insightful and brilliantly argued and there are issues in it that are applicable to nineteen eighty four

Christopher Hitchens's favourite author was also George Orwell, and he both spoke and wrote quite a bit about the significance of Orwell's work, particularly at a time when Orwell's legacy was being questioned.

I have read all Orwell's books and most of his famous essays. He was an incredible writer. 1984 was brilliant. His essay, Politics and the English Language was brilliant. Of his non-fiction, Homage to Catalonia was the most extraordinary. Of his less regarded early novels, I think Burmese Days was probably the best, but I very much enjoyed A Clergyman's Daughter, even though it was a flawed attempt.

LITERALLY SAME!! I'VE BEEN going absolutely mad about Orwell lately... The first book I ever read by him was Down and Out when I was like 15, and LOVED it, and HAD to read 1984, which is obviously amazing, and then I stopped... 5 years pass and like 3 weeks ago I discovered an old copy of Animal Farm and realised I hadn't read it and OH MY GOD. It's the best one of his I've read, it's just perfection. I must read and buy everything now, I must.

I have read both Animal Farm and 1984, and I did an extensive research paper last year during my senior year of high school that analyzed the events going on in the world and in his life that influenced different aspects of 1984. I grew to greatly admire the man and his brilliant mind. I need to reread Animal Farm BADLY, as it was a required read during 7th grade, but unfortunately my teacher never really explained to use what the book was actually about. We all just thought it was about some crazy barnyard animals. I think that I would enjoy it much more if I read it now, understanding what/who each animal actually represents. But I really enjoyed 1984!!

I've read 1984 and Animal Farm, which is pretty standard for people to read. George Orwell is a very thought provoking writer, and I'm glad you are excited about his work.
Currently, I'm pretty crazy about ZZ Packer and Eleanor Catton. Two writers who are absolutely amazing in their writing styles and what they write about. I loved Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries, but I also love her debut The Rehearsal. She's so young, brilliant, and an interesting person. She's originally from Canada, but lives in New Zealand. The way she writes reminds me of someone I know in real life.

1984 is basically the society which is invaded by Illuminati, he was a mason so it kinda makes sense

Ugh, I NEED to read George Orwell's books!!!! I didn't read them in school and I really want to.
I'm sort of/ kind of/ am totally obsessed with Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women). I read Little Women when I was 11 and then I read it again. And again. And again and again and again and again. And then I read her other work and OH MY GOD I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!!!!!

Love the Thought Criminal T-Shirt!! I only read 1984 by George Orwell, and I really enjoyed it. I need to read his other books. I will probably start with Animal Farm(:

I just finished 1984 and whereas it was nowhere near a favourite for me, I loved Animal Farm! And those shirts were totally awesome

I've only just got into Orwell but I wish I'd read his books sooner, I've recently read Animal Farm and I own and plan to read 1984 as soon as possible, also I've been meaning to read Down and Out In Paris and London forever now and I wanna read everything he's ever written. I feel like with Orwell you ever 'get' him or you don't and if you do like him you just want more and that's exactly how I feel :')

I like George Orwell a lot :) I've only read 1984, Animal Farm and Burmese Days I think. I used to read pretty regularly but it's kind of fallen by the waste side in recent years. College keeps me really busy. I used to try reading on the bus but I always fall asleep on the way home or my constant sniffles in the winter months prevent me from taking in any information cause I can't look down for long enough :)

I never studied Animal Farm because my English teacher was crap. *Sad face* I'm planning on reading 1984 and Animal Farm soon, though. I reaaalllyyy want to get in to reading more classics.
