If you’re a beginner to credit cards and looking to build credit for the first time, you’ll likely want to begin with credit cards with easy approvals.
If you’re enrolled in a university, consider student credit cards by Capital One, Discover, and Bank of America. Otherwise, you can look into secured credit cards by the same banks (and also U.S. Bank).
My Top 7 Picks for the best beginner credit cards include the following:
1. Chase Freedom Rise - This is a really unique Chase credit card in that it’s designed for beginners (but it’s not exclusively for students and it’s not a secured credit card). You can increase your approvals chances by first opening a Chase checking account and having a balance of $250 or more. You can also earn a $25 bonus by enrolling in automatic payments and be eligible for a credit limit increase as soon as 6 months.
The following credit cards will likely be easier to get after building credit for about 1 year:
2. Chase Freedom Flex - This cash back credit card is excellent for rotating quarterly rewards that cover useful, everyday spend categories.
3. Capital One SavorOne Rewards - A great choice if you spend a lot at restaurants, supermarkets, and on entertainment.
4. Amex Blue Cash Everyday - Perhaps the best credit card for online shopping.
5. Discover it Cash Back - Another excellent card with rotating quarterly rewards in useful categories.
6. Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards - Choose your own 3% cash back category.
7. Citi Custom Cash - Automatically earn 5% in your top-spend category each billing cycle.
All of choices mentioned in this video are credit cards with NO annual fee, meaning they’re excellent long-term keeper cards as you build your credit score and credit history over the months and years to come.

Thanks for this video!✌🏼😃
No problem!
Thanks for the video! Thoughts on a beginner combo cards, Discover it Chrome and Chase Rise?
You're welcome! Sure, those cards can work together just fine!
Hi Mark! Great video, as always. Question - for cards which we have but do not frequently use at all, how often do we have to use them to avoid the card issuer cancelling the card? Once per year? Please share your anecdotal experience and what you have heard. Thanks!
The earliest account closure due to inactivity that I've experienced about ~ 9-10 months. For that reason, I suggest using all cards at least once every 6 months to keep them active.
2 epic videos, back to back.
On this video, did I miss the part where you mention the order of the cards one gets can make a difference ( ie Chase 5/24, C1 apparent rules around early vs late game...)? Knowing these rules early can be a huge help.
No I don't usually recommend card order based on rules. I prefer people get the cards they want, not because a rule makes them think they should want it. Regardless, all of these cards can be early game, so there's no need to divide them by stage either.
So you don’t care about 5/24?
@@MarkReese I didn't say recommend. I said mention. That's a key difference, because beginners may not be aware of such rules. They can decide what works for them. It's just relaying info.
But you're really opposed to just mentioning?
@@Jrosballer that's directed to Mark, correct?

just a quick question regarding capital one. I tried the get preapproved for savor one with the intro (excellent credit) with no annual fee and venture x but I got denied for venture x and only got approved for good credit for the other. my credit score is 770+ but I noticed that experian was only 718? I fit the category of excellent but didnt get pre-approved for any. is this normal?
Bummer. Unfortunately, I don't have any insights into how Capital One's underwriting criteria / approval standards work. Credit decisions involve a lot of factors, and fitting into one of Capital One's 'categories' doesn't mean an approval is guaranteed.
6 views 4 minutes. Friday night. Not bad.

I have 3, 4 , and 7 not bad🙂

I’m sort of confused. Let’s say I get a 0% apr card for 15 months. 10 months from now I decide to make a big purchase… does that mean I only have 5 months of 0% ? Or it starts when I purchase ?
That would mean 5 months remaining.
Saludos, 🇵🇷👍

I have Chase checkings, and on the app, it says my credit is 607… but I don't have a cc, how is that? I also want to get a cc but I'm not sure which bank is best. Help sos
What other financial products do you have / did you have in the past? Personal loans? Student loans? Auto loan? Mortgage?
@@MarkReese I've used those afterpay apps, I'm guessing it's probably from that right?
@@yaritzasalcido98 - Could be!
I have bank of america rn is the bank of America credit card good for a beginner?
Meaning you have a BOA bank account, or you already have a BOA credit card?
only have 1 cc it's discover...a 677 credit score, in your opinion which card would you say would be my best choice to build my cc game
How long has your Discover card been open?
for about 3 years now...before my cc was 540@@MarkReese
It depends on what you want to acquire etc. ie do you want to continue earning cash back? Points for travel? How long have you had your card? Delinquency?
You can also ask MyFICO Forums and plenty of people can help you there if Mr Reese cant answer your questions 😌
@@MarkReeseHi Mark! I would love some advice. I’ve had the discover it card for 8 months now and it was my first credit card. My score it’s 750 and I want to open a second credit card. I applied for chase active cash and got denied because I’m 19. Any recommendations?
@@Juanmi62 - Your age was the only reason for the denial? In which state do you live?
yo
🤙
C1 isn’t a good option as secured card. It won’t release your deposit as easy as a discovery.
Did you experience that yourself? If so, on which secured card?
@@MarkReese yes I opened both discover and c1 quicksilver, discover after 6 month shipped me a check with my deposit. While C1 within one year and nothing… decided to just cancel it. I understood that they bucket ppl from secured cards. Datapoint shows that you can try to trick it by having the whole credit used in a month and pay it off in the statement and a month after a low credit usage and repeat to sort of reset the bucketing.
I’m out of the game until next year.
Countdown to 2024!
What is this game people are talking about?
The credit card rewards game in general.
I’ve left the game behind
Ain't no banks earning interest off you! 😁👊
So have I.. just for a season tho. I'll be back.
