  • What to Expect when Cruising to Japan. Going to a Country can be scary for cruisers who don't know what to expect. Do I need to see a doctor? Do they take credit cards? I just want to let you know my experience coming back to Japan for the first time in ten years. So here's what you can expect when cruising to Japan.

A friend of mine was visiting Japan and may have partook in too much saki, went into a store saw someone and proceeded to bow. Each time he bowed, the other person did the same. Only to realize he was bowing to his reflection in a mirror. One of my favourite stories, thanks Bryan.

How funny! My sister did the same in Las Vegas. At the Bellagio casino she saw a woman approaching. She stopped, thinking, oh wow, that woman has beautiful hair...then realized she was looking into a mirror. I like your story even more.

I went to Japan when I was twenty for three week, loved it. One of my highlights was I climbed Mount Fuji with a group of USA & Japanese service personnel, (I’m neither) we spent the night on one of the stops so that we could make it to the top by sun rise. I just made it with a lot of encouragement from the service personals and we lucked out as it was a wonderful clear morning without any mist. This was in 1979, One of the best trips of my life, wonderful and kind people. So I hope Don, that both you and Tony have a wonderful time in Japan with great memories.

Don, I live in the USA and I've been to Japan many times. The best place to change money is the ATM machines at the 7-11 or the Post Office (7-11 is best). Rates aren't bad and there are 7-11's everywhere in Japan. Just be sure you notify your bank that you plan to use your debit/credit card in Japan so they don't block it.
You are correct, the Japanese are so kind and polite and eager to help any way they can. And NO tipping anywhere (taxis, barbers, hotels, restaurants)!!

Then you will be insulting the Japanese, it’s not about money it’s about culture and the giving off tips is deemed demeaning in Japanese culture. Try respecting other people’s cultures and traditions.

If you should use the train system, keep an eye out for the 'women only' cars! Apart from Universal Studios Japan, there is also a wonderful aquarium, Osaka castle and an enormous Ferris wheel! The Japanese are very polite and helpful. Giving service to others is part of their culture. They can't do enough for you. I have many Japanese friends in NZ and have had them as guests in my home. They are so grateful for anything you do for them and when they left, they gave me lovely tank you gifts of beer and wine and chocolate and even a fancy bottle of Sake'. They are fun people too and love jokes and humor. As tourists they can't see enough and want to go to every place of interest they can and take lots of photos. I really enjoy their company.

Trains in Japan can be crowded depending on the time of day. The only place they have people push you on the trains is Tokyo and I was told when I was there in April that was going away. The trains and subways are really easy to get around and use and if you need help just ask. Japanese people are super friendly and helpful. I was in Japan for 4 weeks travelled on the trains a lot and only ran into super crowded trains three times. Once was a super crowded tourist spot and the other two business rush times.

Subways in Tokyo can also be complicated. On the same platform trains can be going to different directions, branching off onto different lines. You must be careful to catch the right train. Politeness and respect are important in Japan, so foreigners who are loud, who shout, or who mess around would be frowned upon. By the way, I hope, Don, that you have got yourself a new puppy. I know how sad you were when you lost your sweet friend, your dog, and I felt so sorry for you. Stay safe.

I stayed in a small hotel in Nagoya once and int he bathroom was a shower and a spa bath. The instructions were that you had a shower before getting in the spa bath becoz you clean yourself first and the bath is just for relaxing in. So no soaps or bath gels or anything used in the bath tub. Also they provided slippers for wearing in the motel. I also found that meal portions are quite small. At a big hotel in Tokyo breakfast was included in my holiday package but the breakfasts were really small, just a snack. So as soon as I left my hotel every morning I went to a mobile sandwich vendor nearby and got an egg salad sandwich! I also went to an underground station cafe and ordered a chicken curry. That too was very small and the chicken was cut uniformly into tiny cubes. I'm guessing it was made in a commercial facility.
In Tokyo the only place where I could get English tea was at Mr Donut. There I could get a whole pot of tea and I'd sit and read my book and try at least 2 different donuts a day - there were hundreds of varieties. I got fatter every day despite lots of walking. One of the cheapest places to eat was McDonalds so I went there all the time. Maccas hadn't come to NZ then so I had my first Maccas in Tokyo.
