    Between TLOU remaster and TLOU remake, out of the 2 comparison images shown, 1 makes the remake look bad and one that makes the remake look good. Personally, I think the in-engine rendering of cutscenes does look a little worse than the pre-rendered original cutscenes. But we’ve only seen 2 minutes of footage of the remake and 1 bad looking screenshot of Ellie’s redesigned model. I think the remake is going to be better gameplay-wise than the original. But not worth the $70 to replay a 9 year old game.

    • @Flatcetera
      @Flatcetera 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The problem is that they botched Ellie’s face. It looks like they plastered the face of the VA, who is a grown ass woman, into the body of a 13 year old. It just doesn’t fit and gives that uncanny valley effect.

      @Flatcetera 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Markunator they had already changed her face from the one that looked like Elliot, which was the the 2011 E3 trailer. It never made into the game.
      The one we got never looked like him, back then it was a big deal that they changed the face exactly because beyond two souls was coming out and he was vocal about “being upset there might be a confusion between the games”. Now they just want to make her look like Ashley, which would be fine if they used childhood pictures to recreate Ellie’s face, but they’re just using the previous rig of her face that made her young model look weird in part II, and now on the remake. Yes, it makes for more accurate expression, but the face looks smushed if the angle isn’t just right.

    Go watch comparisons of the full trailer online and tell me if there isn't a colossal difference for the better between the remaster and the remake. The difference in lightning is like night and day in realism. The face models might look a bit uncanny in certain isolated frames but that's just because the faces in the first game were exclusively hand animated (which made them look more stylized or more cartoonish) and Part II (which they are using as a blueprint for the remake) had facial motion capture as well (witch made them look more realistic). The Joel and Ellie models are pretty much the ones they used for the History museum flashback in the second game, that takes place only a year after the original game. They are clearly more expressive and have way better textures, not even close.

      That’s a HUGE failure tho. If a game hinges on making you care and relate to the characters, making their faces do “less” of that is actually a downgrade, no matter how much more expressive they are. And yeah, younger Ellie does look awkward in part II, that’s kind of the main problem.

    the original game had severe AI compromises as a result of 2006 hardware limitations & poorly thought out level design that led to a combat experience not even in the same echelon as the second. They couldn't have done a straight port and then fix those issues in post, otherwise they'd have done it on PS4.
    This is backporting the codebase and pipeline systems of the sequel AND attempting to redesign encounters to actually benefit from it. This is also a tertiary project for ND so the graphical fidelity isn't as big of a jump as 1 to 2 was. Everyone's pretending TLOU was a flawless game and this is only a visual update, which is frustrating because these same people admit that it would be worthwhile if they made major balance and design overhauls to actually change the game, which is literally what this remake is.

    I mean, Last of us 2 looks amazing, even today, and ND is trying to bring Part 1 more in line with part 2, so you can play the games simultaneously without it being jarring. On release its probably will look really good, and play better than the OG.
    That being said, Last of us still looks decent and it didn't really need an update, plus costing $80+ is a real kick in the teeth to play what is essentially a pretty looking update. If it was a $30-40 upgrade path from the ps4 remaster, then maybe -but while I'm sure it will be great, it doesn't feel like a substantial remake and can't justify that price tag.
    Demon's Souls ps5 is next level, best remake since RE2. Even though it doesn't change the gameplay, it justifies its existence with an intense graphical overhaul and playing at a locked 60 while looking That good and loading levels in a second? Incredible. If ND waited longer, got a new game under their belt that wasn't Last of Us related, this remaster would be more justified. They may be making Last of us 3 immediately and this remaster is a way to future-proof the first one.

    The problem for me about Last of Us Part 1is that it essentially is what The Last of Us Remastered was, an engine update, only this time they cut content from it and raised the price significantly. It's ironic too because the original game still holds up both visually and gameplay-wise, and I think the reason why the original holds up visually is because there was an actual style to it, the characters had a pseudo-comic aesthetic while still sticking to a somewhat photo-real backdrop. Sure with Part 2's engine you can see more subtleties in emotion, but it's not that insane of an upgrade, and it feels out of place because photorealism wasn't the art direction for the first game, it works in Part 2 because photorealism was the intended visual style, whereas Part 1 was going for an aesthetic that was never intended. It looks pretty, but I can still get the same experience by just booting up the PS4 version.

    I disagree with the RE4 Remake take. It's a relatively old game, launched in '04, and was just recently updated and ported to VR, and rather well too. That's just one direction it could have gone, and now, we're getting something like RE2 Remake but for 4. The VR version showed that there are some technical and physics based improvements to be made that enrich the gameplay experience. Also, it's well known in the RE community that 4 was meant to be even spookier and meatier than the final product. It is possible that Capcom will add cut content that didn't make it to the masterpiece we've had all these years.
    Something similar is happening with KotOR II on Switch as well. The dev team Aspyr, same team remaking KotOR I, will be integrating the infamous Restored Content Mod.
    As long as the games are being remade for the right reasons, I personally see no issue with it

    the difference between Warcraft 3 and Warcraft 3 Reforged can only be understood if you play them both from that RTS camera view, in the original game the units and everything are so well-designed that you can easily keep track of them and in a large scale battle you don't have a hard time looking at them and figuring out what's happening while in Reforged the units and everything blend in together and it becomes confusing, that's why the professional players play with the original GFX rather than the Reforged version.

    • @herec0mestheCh33f
      @herec0mestheCh33f 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was one of the big flaws with Homeworld that the remaster didn't really fix imo. You have to really zoom down to see the model designs of units (aside from the REALLY big ships) and that kinda sucks in the middle of a big fight. They counter this somewhat in the original and the remaster by giving each ship an icon that marks them by relative size after you get far enough away, but it doesn't, for example, distinguish between anti-fighter strike craft or bomber strike craft, and that makes it a real game of where's Waldo when you've got hundreds of units on-screen duking it out and flying in all sorts of wacky circles as they try to outflank enemy units.
      Also it's a bit if a shame because the ships look pretty cool, but you mostly see the icons that represent them because space is big and such.
      Would have been an easy enough fix to change some of the icons a bit. They do it with boarding frigates, because their icon is bigger than other frigates which makes it really easy to see them and evaporate them before they can steal your stuff. Too bad they didn't add something to other ships to make them more noticeable

    • @PumkRock
      @PumkRock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually hated the pre-rendered cutscenes in the Halo 2 remaster. For starters, In the original game the cutscenes were all in-engine.
      You could fight through an area, crash a warthog into a wall, blow up all of the surrounding clutter items, litter the floor with dead enemies- and then in the following cutscene the room would look exactly like that. Your crashed warthog would still be smouldering in the background while characters talked to each other- and on replays of the game you could even intentionally mess up cutscenes by parking vehicles where you knew they would obscure vision or prevent characters from walking through doors and stuff.
      outside of stuff like level intros, larger events like space battles and endgame cinematics, I will always prefer in-engine cutscenes, because pre-rendered ones take me out of the experience to watch something else.
      But to top it off, the new cutscenes have completely different pacing. They are definitely impressive looking- and stuff like the grave mind really benefits from the new visuals - but a lot of the original mood of the game is lost because they all feel like they are running on breakneck fast-forward and are full of booming bass sounds.
      When the scarab attacks your dropship in the original game, you get like 3 establishing shots of it lumbering out of the smoke, the music swells, it's stepping on trucks, it begins charging up it's cannon- you are given a second or two to think "oh fuck what is *that???*" and intuitively grasp what's about to happen before it attacks.
      In the remake it partially emerges from dense smoke and basically INSTANTLY ambushes you.
      In the original game there are several shots that linger on a character as they survey a scene, or a character's face/helmet for dramatic effect- but the new fancy cutscenes are in too much of a hurry all of the time to do this.

    As a lifelong Nintendo fan the Wind Waker remaster is total and absolute dogshit. They haphazardly slapped bloom and realistic lighting effects everywhere in a game with a timeless cartoon aesthetic. The characters look more like weird clay dolls than cartoons now. The slightly desaturated colors are actually gross, Link's once appealing tunic now looks like puke.
    Take a look at gameplay of the Dragon Roost dungeons and caves and just look at how dogshit the realistic lighting on torches is compared to the stylish original lighting. The biggest shame is that they decided to COMPLETELY ruin the aesthetic and artistic integrity of the game in a port that otherwise features a lot of gameplay improvements.

    Demon Souls remake is more like Reforged. The difference is that Demon's actually look good judging it by modern standards, but Bluepoint (the dudes who remastered Shadow of Colossus) went all authoral in the remaster, making it waaaaay more generic. Demon's Souls conveyed it's themes through level and enemy design, and Bluepoint made stuff look way different, in a way that "looks better" but loses the whole subtext of the original.

    I do agree to an extent but I dont think the TLoU remake is a good example because if what Druckmann said is true, its not only a graphical update, but also includes a lot of the gameplay features that were added on the second game, so its not just "you can now play TLoU on the PS5". Also, sure, the graphics in the cutscenes for TLoU were fine but the actual in game stuff could definitely use a new coat of paint.

    In the near future this obsession with remaking games is going to be looked back on very poorly. There are already subcultures who love the low fidelity look of the PS1 and N64. These games are products of their time like any other piece of art but in the game industry we seem obsessed with scrubbing them clean and trying to keep them modern.
    Rerealising so the game runs on modern machines is good. Making the game output at modern resolutions is fine too, just because swapping resolutions makes alt tabbing really annoying. But even upscaling textures goes a bit too far for me. Definitely don't start fiddling with how the game plays. I want to play the game as it was and it isn't even a nostalgia thing. I want to do this with games I've never played before too.
    At least keep the original, or a version very close to the original up for sale. Sometimes these remasters completely replace the original in stores.

    Remaster: Increase in resolution and frame rates, usually for a new console. The assets are still the same. (Wind Waker HD)
    Remake: Redone from scratch and attempts to match the original game. (Final Fantasy VII Remake)

      Remake sort of splits into two categories of 1:1 remake and reimagining. A 1:1 remake would be Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated or the Crash/Spyro remakes or Demon's Souls. A reimagining would be something like the Resident Evil remakes.

    • @TicTacPilgrim

      The multiplayer will be a separate release. It's own game. The devs were originally going to have it in with PART 2 but they wanted to do more with it and are basically making it on scale like Part 2 was in terms of content. It's in San Francisco with its own separate cast and storyline. We'll be seeing more of it next year.

    I dunno, I kind of enjoy having a reason to get hyped for a game I already experienced multiple times. Resident Evil 4 could definitely use a facelift and as much as I like the game, I think seeing them shift more into the horror elements of RE2 remake will give RE4 the potential to be better than the original. I'm kinda sick of people defending resident evil 4 like it's not the most stale and goofiest piece of media that exists in horror. All you do is shoot enemies once in the leg and suplex them and it's not difficult. It's hardly even perceived as a survival horror game these days just from how long people have joked about the unusually corny dialogue and from how familiar we are with the layout and mechanics of the game. A part of me hopes the remake is good enough to silence the legacy of the original because I like so much of what they did with RE2 remake. RE3 remake was just a cash grab that defiled the original so maybe I'm talking out of my ass and Capcom plans to cookie-cutter the RE4 remake too

      They're going to cut out separate ways and project ada for sure. They might bring back mercenaries mode because that's a lot of the replayability of the game. They might even cut out certain base game sections like in 3.

    @emilchan5379 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Eh another bad media take from Vaush? He seems to be conflating remasters and remakes, and honestly there can be both good and bad remasters and remakes. It really depends.
    I mean, I get Vaush's point about remastering games that already look good, but using TLOU is a bad example to use. For one the TLOU remake is making improvements to make it more in line with TLOU 2, plus the fact that is it coming to PC already makes this remake worth it. If you already played this on console don't think it is worth the price tag then don't buy it? You are probably not the target audience of this remake.
    Plus it is strange that Vaush praises Starcraft Remastered for being a straight graphical update, while saying a RE4 remake isn't necessary. I mean RE4 is more than 15 years old - it could definitely use a facelift. Also the devs look to be adding back more horror elements into RE4, since the original was a pretty big departure from the rest of the RE series.
    Also just to elaborate on Warcraft Reforged a little, the issue with Reforged is that the new art style makes all the units blend in with each other. Compared to the original WC3, it is very hard to distinguish one unit from another, which is why the WC3 pro scene prefers to use the original graphics.

    Agree with nearly all of this especially the upgrading select textures to make it look like two different games in different generations were copy pasted together to make everything worse. FF8 remaster is another great example of this shit.
    The one point I'll challenge is the RE4 remake. That game is a masterpiece. You can pick up and play it today (I played it a year ago) and its still awesome. However, there is no denying the controls of Leon feels awkward and off and you as the player have to just get used to it. Its certainly not as bad as tank controls but it absolutely is an adjustment. Graphically the game shows its age as well but its still 'fine'. I'm completely fine with that game being remade.
    As for TLOU...I agree its nonsense. The one point I can give in the games defence is that its being released on PC and so they are working on it for that reason. Does that justify the full price re-release? Nope! But it does make sense why they are working on it beyond a lazy no effort PC port.

    • @emilchan5379
      @emilchan5379 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is kind of a "damned if you do damned if you don't" kind of situation isn't it? If they made a lazy no effort PC port of TLOU people will complain, but if they decide to slap on some upgrades to the PC port people will complain anyways. Sometimes there is just no way of pleasing everybody...
