Remember, no spoilers. Outer Wilds is a game all about knowledge, you don't gain any abilities or unlock any mechanics. There is nothing stopping you from beating the game on your first run on a mechanical level, only your lack of knowledge keeping you from doing it. This is a game about exploration, discovery, and the importance of experience. If you haven't played Outer Wilds, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Same. It took me some time to work out why I felt so spiritually connected to the ending. I think it's because it does something different from other games. In other games, movies, books, whatever, when there is a world-ending event, it is the protagonist's job to prevent it and save the world. Outer Wilds has a different take. It says, "there is no way to stop the end of the world. And even if you do save it, you will only wither away as the rest of the universe dies. But you know what? That's ok. It's ok that you can't save the world. It was fun while it lasted, and that's all that matters in the end."
I think that's such a profound and spiritually cathartic message that you just can't help but to get emotional about it

Just started playing Outer Wilds last night, multiple times I had that "Oohhh, that's what that is" moment. Each loop I would see that thing blow up in the sky and kept saying "What the hell is that?", the first loop after I learned about it I said "Ooohhh, THAT's what that is. Wait, how is that what it is?.....Oohhhh...." lmao. I haven't experienced that kind of satisfaction in a game in a long time, every time I need to go back to somewhere cause I died I never felt it was tedious or was annoyed, I just really wanted to get back to see what I missed or didn't have time to find. If that was what just the first few hours where like for me I can't wait to see the rest of the game.

Something I 100% agree with Vaush about, I’m glad he said this as the game deserves to be played by anyone who enjoys video games, it’s truly one of the most creative and truly brilliant use of the medium of video games. As Vaush said, on a conceptual level it’s brilliant, but also as far as gameplay, flying your ship and having a jetpack feels great, and since the solar system is entirely simulated with actual physics, the gravity is ‘realistic’, or it’s not just like your character can float easily, sometimes you feel like the floor is sliding away from beneath you at an angle that you’re struggling to correct while also forcing your way back, which is a unique and satisfying feeling to correct.
The DLC also made me tear up, it’s an amazing expansion on top of an already brilliant game, go buy it if you haven’t. (Oh and it’s the developer’s first game, and it was made by like 12 people or something like that, so it’s even more impressive).

I think existential nihilism is actually very optimistic the fact that humans don’t exist for any purpose is a great thing because it allows us to make our own purpose
This is why religion is more pessimistic in my view the existence of an all knowing god that has given us divine purpose is actually really depressing when you think about it

Subnautica is more about fear of the unknown. Outerwilds is almost entirely driven by curiosity and since dying doesn't matter there's nothing to stop you from being brave (or reckless) in the face of danger.

Sounds like a cool game. I've always leaned in the direction of exploration heavy games, especially Metroid and its spiritual successors. Hollow Knight in particular gave me feelings very similar to what Vaush describes, though part of its appeal was the fact that even the story was shrouded in mystery. The very plot that you take part in isn't really told to you in a straightforward way until nearly the end of the game, and even then to grasp that information you'd have to have spent a long time gathering information, and trying your best to deduce or induce the truth about the character you play and the role you take. An almost immeasurable amount of the story is left obscure, and that's what makes it truly satisfying to uncover it all and try to understand, and even if you manage to find every last scrap of information and absorb all the theories the fan community has put forward you can only be really left with the conclusion of "wow that sure was a lot of history I took part in, and I will never fully understand it."

TBH. I am not able to finish the DLC, eye problems make the dark section really straining. Rest of the game is pure genius. Idk, I generally rate everything based on how much I enjoy it. I really like Roland Barthes' Death of the Author for this, I think the affect of art is much more complicated than "this is what the creator wanted, how well does it do it" and because of this I don't really think analyzing art ignoring this is effective, but I can see the appeal of it. Not sure why I'm writing this, good analysis!

Nice video mate 🥂 Outer Wilds is the only game that gave me the same feeling as the first Subnautica game. And OW looks so cute and joyfull, but when it scared me, it took the soul out of me. In some parts it has some intense dread feeling. When I played the first time, i was also playing it with a controler..and I am so noob with a controler. I bashed something and then I end up far far away, with a broken ship, not knowing what to do, in the blackness of space. And then the time loop reset happenedbfor the first time. It litterraly shocked me. And then after 10 secs back at the beginning, in front of the cozy fire. I stood there for 5 min, looking at the monitor, with my brain shut down. And this is nothing, is not a spoiler, is not a super cool scripted event or part of the story, is not even bound to happen to some players. Is just a moment I created by accident. The fear of the unknown is present so much in this game, just like in Subnautica, but in a different way. The only game that makes you feel the vastness of space.

I ain't Vaush but I am Canadian and my country is very ethnically diverse. We may not have free college and drugs like Scandanavia but we do have large social safety nets that make living a whole lot easier compared to the US. You guys pay for ambulances, that's unheard of here. Anyway just tell your friend that ethnic homogeneity isn't why the Nordic model works and you're fine. It's that generosity and hospitality is a big part of their culture. What can your friend say, really? There is no excuse for the US to not improve healthcare, infrastructure, education, wages, benefits, etc. Only the greed of the wealthy and the misguided rugged individualism of the oblivious masses.

I just finished playing this game and was excited to see that Vaush had a take on it. That said...I'll confess I don't totally get the rapturous love for the game. Don't get me wrong - I liked it. I thought it was fun. But I didn't feel like the themes really hit me the way they hit other people? I like the sounds of the themes Vaush says he got out of it, and I can kiiinda see them in there, but to me they felt like a very thin icing over what was largely a puzzle game.
Maybe that's partly my fault - there's so many text logs to read, I read them all for the first 2/3 or so of the game but later, and especially when I was worried about running out of time, I'd scan them ASAP so I'd have the important info in my ship bank. I stopped talking to the other characters once I'd finished getting though their dialogue trees too, and their trees weren't that long either, so the other characters were mostly blips against the full playtime of the game, most of which was spent trying to figure out what the game wanted me to do mechanically, which was usually a one-answer-only proposition that got me pretty stuck in a couple places (word to the wise - you can change the frequency of your scanner device manually to find certain kinds of signals).
I found the time loop mechanic to get pretty tedious at times - the initial runup to the ship was fine, but going into a couple places that required some work to get to, scanning everything I could find, then restarting the loop only for my log to tell me "there's more information here!" and need to go through the whole process again got pretty demoralizing. Really would have been nice to be able to access your log at any time, not just from the ship.
    Spoilers!!!!
Finally, I found the ending a little disappointing. Everything on the last run up until you get to the endgame was climactic enough, but the ending itself gets into tedious walking simulator territory for me. And it seemed like it wanted me to go "aww, everyone's back together again", but I really didn't feel much for the characters since they had such limited dialogue trees and few reasons to talk to them. I guess it was cute and all, but I certainly wasn't in tears.
So idk. I did enjoy it. But it's not something I'm going to replay or spend a lot of time thinking about.

i have seen so many of those dime a dozen "what's a game everyone likes but you hate?" reddit threads and, saddeningly, almost all of them have several comments about outer wilds. i don't know what other types of games the people writing those comments enjoy, and maybe i just have a bias from having so much love for this game, but i cannot imagine hating it. it's a perspective i cannot fathom. is it because there's no in game progression meter? is it because the game is mostly quiet and ambient? did these people just listen to podcasts over it and treat it like no man's sky? it's not a very long game, there's really no tedium, and the puzzles are mostly intuitive and satisfying to solve. i feel like a hatred for outer wilds has to come from a fundamental lack of appreciation for video games as an art form

True, also, I don’t even think there were that many hamfisted philosophical speeches… like idk there was the storyline with simone and that philosopher robot but even that wasn’t framed like a “philosophy textbook” but through the experiences and pain of simone. Other than that, are there even any other points in the game where the characters directly talk about abstract philosophy? I haven’t played it in a while, but when I think of the game, I remember things like ending e, 2b’s death and how 9s goes crazy, devola and popola sacrificing themselves, pastel, etc. Sure the game explored philosophical issues but I always felt like it was framed through the actual events of the game rather than something that is shoves down your throat.

I mean it is the quintessential 3rd person action rpg. Not to mention the two dlcs that came out for the game are more in depth than many full games. The combat is challenging and fun, the main story and all the side quests are extremely well written. The different choices you can make, make the game very replay-able. It’s even got a card game called gwent that was so popular they made it into its own game. And just like Vesemir says, “when you fight a beast, knowledge counts as much as your silver sword.
