I use the Pro-Q3 dynamic sidechain EQ feature for this most of the time. It works like a charm! Making space for the vocal like this makes a huge difference. Great video! :)
A little tip for you. On your instruments bus, use an M/S utility to split your signal. Put Trackspacer on both channels. Have the lead vocal sidechain the mid and the backing vocals sidechain the sides. Then use another M/S utility to recombine the signal.
@@deangelomanuel4613 here is a video where Joe Gilder does this with EQ, but just insert Trackspacer instead. Set the sidechain for the Mid channel to the lead vocal, set the sidechain for the sides to the backing vocals. th-cam.com/video/KxbxCEcsB3k/w-d-xo.html
Hey there Streaky i am from Czech Republic and trying to learn mix and master on a PRO level. I just wanna inform you that your videos on youtube are just so precise and real techniques. I really wanna thank you what are you doing for the others. I just hope that one day will meet in person and talk about sound engineering. Wishing you the best buddy.
I have used a few multiband compressors, and none of them work as well as the Fabfilter for me. Great tip that I’ll definitely start working on getting better at!
This is a fantastic technique !! As a music arranger I work a lot this way. Most of the times got ready the stereo mix of the music so the singer comes later to record the vocals. With this tool I´ll be more precise in the final mix: vocals vs. music track. Thanks a lot Streaky.
It's just my opinion but, your defo the number 1 place to go too for all us anoraks!! I'm constantly asking myself "is it monday, wednesday or friday"! God damn you streaky! 😆😆😆 oh yes it's wednesday tmrw! Great vid as always.
So would you route all instruments to an instrument buss and put MB on that? Then send the vocal buss to the instrument buss on say 3/4 aux. Then send instrument buss to a mix buss and raw vocals to the mix buss, then that buss to the master?
Great tutorial and very informative video. Thank you. I just have one question. For this trick I always use dynamic EQ and side chain vocals. You used multiband compressor. Which is better dynamic EQ for this trick or multiband compressor and why? Thank you for your answer.
Apologies if this is a stupid question (although I personally believe no question is stupid). I am a relative newbie, and I just wondered will this work also for a Choir? I am having issues with a Choir in the mix just crucifying everything else from the Orchestral side/drums etc. I have tried a few different things, and about to try this method. Thanks for your Videos, straight to the point and VERY useful. thanks.
It is bad that I always think of this as ‘cheating’ because it works SO DAMN WELL, thanks for reminding me that all that matters is that it sounds good, doesn’t matter how you get there 😂
Maybe a dumb question, bit of a noob, but... Do you recommend rendering the instrumental tracks down to stereo separately and adding the lead vocal track later, or did you do that here merely for the purposes of this demonstration? I really like your vids, btw. Especially the fact that you tend to get right to the point without spending an endless amount of time "introducing" the topic.
this kind of trick is generally used for more compressed kind of music like house or modern mainstream music or other stuff like this, you know...if you're mixing on more acoustic and dynamic music like soul music or other stuff of this kind, i think it's better to mix the vocals in the same project of the instrumental...my 2 cents
That's a cool technique but I think this particular song is a bad example only because the vocal track is very "ethereal" with reverb and not very clear/detailed. Otherwise, cool tip!
.could you help me? i use dynamic eq to achieve the same process. which is more professional? im concerned, vecause i dont use a multiband and what is the difference between sidechain dynamic eq than sidechain multiband compression. thanks i would love the tips!!
Great video! I am in the mix right now with this exact problem, how do I go about routing this to use this tip/trick? I am in Logic Pro X and mixing midi, what bus to use, sidechain? any tips?
Nice tip thanks a lot ! Got to your vids more and more, and that allows me to make all I know a bit more accurate by trying. Your thoughts on using a dynamic eq instead of pro mb for that specific case ?
Would you say this would work the same if using FabFilter Q3 in dynamic mode? I usually prefer using dynamic EQ over MB compression (I know they are very similar).
Great video - thanks - just subscribed. Was very keen to try this, but am using Logic Pro X and it's stock multiband comp (multipressor) doesn't have a side chain capability. Is there any way to work around this using stock Logic plug-ins please? Thank you.
Is this multiband compressions or Dynamic EQ? Just wondering because i dont have profab but i have C6 and F6. im pretty sure with fabfilter you can interchange between Dynamic Eq and multiband compression. I want to make sure i use the correct tool though when applying this because Dynamic Eq and multiband compression are very different.

You got a video of it??
Track spacer is a good plugin for this kind of stuff too.

I am finding all these new videos bu Streaky published recently perhaps the most insightful mixing tutorials on the freeweb. Thanks!
I was just thinking ZATTLY the same thing. !
You're really going all out man, very appreciated! Vocals are getting smooth af now
Streaky, this last batch of your "single idea" videos is SO useful, memorable, and on point. Brilliant stuff. Thank you so much.
Never thought of that! Thanks for opening my eyes (and ears)! 😉👍
Streaky killing the game! MB Compression ducking to sit vocals is so important in many instances and this is a great and to the point video. 🙏🙏🙏
Streaky makes the world sound better
Excellent information!! A game changer for mixing the dynamic of the vocal in conjunction with the instrumental ensemble
I've been wondering for months as to what's the secret sauce for creating space between the track and vocal. This is beautiful !
Nothing like a good ducker ... my preference for to get harmonica players out the way is the mute button
evil😂😂😂
THANK YOU!!! my vocal finally doesnt fight with my ins now

I like the whiteboard example. :)
Cheers dude
That’s everything I want from you and need from you right now
this tip is a gem 💥💥
Loving the visuals on the white board
Oh, yeah! Can't wait to give this a try.
Waves f6 ,spectral layers, track spacer are other ways also. Good video

thanks, i use to do this sometimes, but wasnt sure if im 'allowed' to
Very useful! Thank you, sir!
Nice Man! thanks!
Right now I am working on a vocal trance project. Perfect timing! Thank you man...

Where should we put the mutiband compresser in the master or on vocal or on piano ???? Help unable to understand 😔☹️???
great stuff streaky. is that method similar what the soothe2 plugin does?

Yeah prob but all I could find due to TH-cam copyright nonsense

Streaky mentioned in other comments that you probably won’t have as much control over the parameters like release attack on dynamic EQs
I thought the vocals sounded pretty well blended before the extra processing! lol.
Hi. Just to be clear is this process during the mastering stage? Thanks for sharing
Is that Fifine Condenser mic in front of you ?
Do you have a preset for this setting somewhere?

Your thoughts on using a dynamic eq instead of pro mb for that specific case ?
No control on attack and release times makes it not as good
Wow. you put the MB on the instrumental track or the vocal track.
multiband goes on the instrumental track and you choose the vocal track as the sidechain input (some plugin call sidechain the "key input".)
Cheers sam 👍
Would you say this would work the same if using FabFilter Q3 in dynamic mode? I usually prefer using dynamic EQ over MB compression (I know they are very similar).
Yeah you can but you don’t have as much control on the attack and release times 👍
Niceee!! How did you process the vocals on this?
ah! okay! They will surely be the ones I bought that are on the way to Buenos Aires. do you really think the Hedd are the best?
Could you use the Pro Q in the same way to duck the specific frequency?
Question..Wondering why you use linear phase mode on the FabilfterMB. Does it sound better in that mode?
great vid. just one quick question. why dont u use just simple eq instead of MB compressor? is there a reason for this?
You can add some eq but we are trying to blend it rather than just eq
amazing. i see thats the detail from the experience. thnx for sharing ur knowledge.
is that a sidechain or you just put the MB compressor on the beat
Great video - thanks - just subscribed. Was very keen to try this, but am using Logic Pro X and it's stock multiband comp (multipressor) doesn't have a side chain capability. Is there any way to work around this using stock Logic plug-ins please? Thank you.

Hello friend, what happens that I do not see you with the Hedd Headphone? Which ones do you like the most?
They took them back :(
What if the vocals sounds like it is miles away with the instruments?
