- Utah’s West Desert has been a major area of focus in the search to find Susan Powell.
In 2010 news media reported on plans for a large public search for Susan in the Simpson Springs area of Utah’s West Desert.
Steve Powell, Josh’s father wrote in his journal obtained by Cold that after reports of the search started circulating, “Michael has joked that Josh should make a comment like Brer Rabbit, such as ‘search anywhere, in West Valley, in Simpson Springs, in Salt Lake City, but please, please, please don’t search near Rattlesnake Rock.’”
West Valley City police discovered that journal entry after seizing several computers and hard drives from Steve Powell’s home during a search warrant raid on Aug. 25, 2011.
That raid was a piece of a larger operation code-named “Tsunami.”
The information gained during that raid led investigators to think that Josh might have disposed of Susan’s body near the Dugway Geode Beds or Topaz Mountain.
On Sept. 12, 2011, police launched a major effort to scour that entire region using cadaver dogs.

I'm incredibly grateful Susan never got the daughter she wanted....I can't imagine if a little girl was stuck in that house with a house of creepers!
@Dana Davison that's the thing I love most about this podcast is that in the beginning and end of each podcast he encourages everyone to know the signs of abuse and to seek help! Because sometimes people explain the "abuse" away.... and dont want to face the situation they are in.
The boys were assaulted in that family and I feel sorry for Susan who wanted a normal family life - a husband that showed affection and helped financially. I don’t condemn her for wanting a daughter.

@Dana Davison Its not that easy to leave a situation like that. Power and control cycle really holds on to a person... and she was religious - which pushes a woman to stay in a marriage. She wrote her will, told many people and left a safety deposit box and letter (in case of her death). She was getting bolder and taking the steps to leave. I wish the investigators found out what triggered Josh to do what he did then. Maybe, she told him she was finally leaving.. but having a woman in the house the night it happened who claimed he was in a good mood makes me think she didn't know it was going to happen that day. It is a sign when a person changes behavior. People in domestic abuse situations .. go back and forth with emotions.. because there is a cycle.. during the calm times she may have thought about having another child but then another episode happens that triggers her wanting to leave.

I listened to each episode consecutively. Lol I’m getting very little productive work done. With mixed feelings, I approach the last episodes. Thank you for this amazing piece of work. Steve Powell disgusts me and you know there are more people out there like him and his crazy family.

I’m not saying I feel sad for Josh but dang his responses and behaviors are so in line with traumatic child abuse. That Steve was a monster too and created monsters. No telling what had happened to those little boys already. I wonder why they hated Mormons so much. I don’t believe anything Josh says. He’s clever, a narcissist, emotionally disconnected.

This is the cycle of abuse. Steven powell abused his wife belittled her dismissed her and was overbearing with his own children. Josh got the worst of these disciplines. Jennifer powell graves said Josh was traumatized by his own father. He fell in line to steven own twisted thinking to save himself from steven wrath. In return when he finally found a good woman like susan he treated her as his father taught him ... to serve his needs dismiss her as a disciplinarian for their children. He let the kids do whatever they wanted. Just as he had no rules or curfews he too passed that down. And he controlled everything in his own household. Is too tragic that he wasn't able to get the help he so desperately needed. The destruction of his family might have been avoided.💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 rip susan charlie Braden rest gently in God's arms.

The detectives made a huge mistake not arresting Josh along with his father I believe those two little angels lives on the detectives police, and district attorneys heads.

My NPD ex husband kept years of bank statements, letters, old keys, and photos of EVERYTHING. They use those items for deriving fuel thru euphoric recall. It also gives them a feeling of power and control.
The fact he hid his files could have been evidence of his involvement- her missing and all the stuff Susan left behind would convinced a jury.
I know Susan's parents never got the justice they wanted and needed, but at the VERY least, Josh was a man who was constantly looking over his shoulder. He knew the cops were always one step away. He probably wondered every day if that would be the day that the knock at the door would come. He never knew peace of mind. However, it is this circular thinking that likely led to him doing what he did to those two little boys :(
He thought moving there would be quieter, would subside and eventually die off& he'd be able to just resume life in the World according to Josh Powell. But ultimately it didn't exactly turn out that way.
Steve was delusional, detached from reality, disturbed.

'COLD' doesn't come close to describing what was supposed to be working inside this person's chest. Evil is what was happening in his sick, rotten soul, and I hope that soul never finds rest. The most horrible thought keeps recurring when I think about how he murdered his little boys. How did he look into their eyes, knowing the horrible fate that he have planned for them? I know the dear little angels are with God, and are resting with Him in peace. I don't know if Satan would have lowered his standards enough to accept their father.
Where was that gas station compared to where he said he went camping? If the lady saw Susan and she was alive that could have been a good lead to where he left her.. just think about the fact Susan was becoming more open about her feelings and emotions. Maybe Josh took her openness as infidelity. Of course, if she was not getting anything from her husband, she would be normal to want some attention at her young age. But, she wasn't trying to have an affair with some man, she was trying to repair her marriage.
It sounds like many people are dismissing the gas station lady, not believing her for some reason. I agree with you, if Susan was alive then her resting place may be near that gas station.
Omg Steve and Josh were way too close, Josh forgave his dad for way too much and even i wonder about their relationship. The more he listens to Steve the more Josh seemed to hate Susan til what Steve thought would be a break up of their marriage
It is astonishing that the state agencies rescued two children from a home where a person accused of inappropriate sexual behavior and a suspected murder lived, and proceeded to give the suspected murderer input into how the children were to be cared for. And supervised visits on Sunday?😮
Any visits should have take place at a secure location, like the local CPS office.
I hope a serious look into policies and procedures in that state occurred following this tragedy. The court and CPS in that case failed the community, those boys, and the sane loving members of their mother's family that loved them.

@@Elleoaqua she was a victim in her own right. but that doesn't mean that she didn't take on disgusting traits because of that like Josh and Steve himself from his own parents. growing up in a household where your father writes notes about your older sister and how he was turned on by her isn't probably going to be the best place to be raised.. there's a possibility she didn't feel like she was in the loop like her brothers were and then she also didn't feel like her father loved her and wanted her the way he did Jennifer and was jealous because of that 🤷♀️ there might be a possibility that since she didn't feel like she was an intellectual equal with her father like her brothers were that she wanted to be a sexual equal to her father like her sister was (in steves mind obviously). I think there's a possibility that she would have wanted to be on the end no matter what being on the "in" entailed. What happened to the lady working in the store where josh stopped the night of the camping trip. She the store clerk said
Susan was with him that night and visibly upset said she had been crying. That was proof she was with him on the way to camping trip and then one of the boys drew a picture of there mom in the trunk of the car. And Charlie said she stayed where the crystals were because they were beautiful. My heart hurts for what Charlie had to go through after his mom disappeared. Those boys were so innocent. And smart. I wonder if they ever thought maybe there dad would do to them what he did to their mom.

then Josh wanted to go plop down in the floor of Charlie's classroom when Charlie would start saying potential incriminating things about what happened to his mom. he did that to intimidate that poor baby and make sure he didn't say a word. you can tell from the 1st interview to the 2nd one poor little Charlie speaks so well on the first one but the second one he is stuttering a lot and calling his mom susan. I can't even begin to imagine the torture those poor kids felt and what Susan must have went through living not with just one monster but instead an entire family of monsters. Josh controlled her and intimated her. While he laid up on his lazy butt and lived off her. Once she was beginning to be done with him he saw he was losing that control along with his dirty laundry being aired possibly in court. psychopaths hate when they aren't in control or losing control and that drives them to insanity. that's what the killings were about to show he was in control and wasn't about to give that up especially what he considered his property and whom he felt he owned. makes me sick to think that this world had and still has real life monsters like the Powell family breathing the same air and walking the same streets as we are unknowingly the damages they will do , have done and will continue to do and go unnoticed by their friends and neighbors because they are such great actors and actresses that they can cover up their sickness and abuse and we are so uninvolved in others problems and unconcerned with others true well being until something bad happens. the DA should have found some type of charge to hold that sorry SOB behind bars and maybe those boys would have had a chance but I feel that Charlie would have been somewhat mentally insane himself from what he endured saw and was taught at the hands of that sick sick family. She’s hallucinating
Josh looked so haggard(sleep deprived for starters)in the final weeks leading up to his unspeakable last act. Anyone could tell in the weeks and months between his Dad's arrest( and his boys being taken away) that his roof was slowly caving in and it was getting to him. I think anytime he began to believe that he was getting them back, that there were also seeds of doubt about it too, remembering that they were not living with him, they were not in his control, even though we had bi-weekly visits. Obviously, still he wasn't expecting the bombshell of him not getting them back & the reason, besides being the sole person of interest in his wife's disappearance.
His passwords might be from church scriptures or book of Mormon words check it out there are some names that aren't every day words. I'm a member so I use some of them .on certain things but mostly I use my native language .
He sounds like a nightmare of a husband and the father in law who was OBSESSED with her, run girl run!!!! Sad she didn’t get alive, poor Susan. But why was she with him for so long? ? Josh and his family just l sound like a nightmare family to be apart and definitely a fatal family .

Such bad decisions from both law enforcement and child services.
Josh shouldn't have been allowed to see his kids at his private home, his visit should have been over the strictest of conditions at the children's center. By letting Josh had the kids at home he was able to carry out his wicked murder plan.
He never loved his kids he addressed them as my boys, they were to him, carbon copies of himself, not individuals on their own, having their own personalities and feelings, separate fromJosh, making them expendable, and worse for them,witnesses to their mothers death and a threat to their father.

A sick family. I struggle with it all because josh was abused and brainwashed by his own father so much so that he just like steven regarded women as servants to all his needs. That was what they were created for in his eyes.

When you get to the episode about the insurance and POA (power of atty) etc it becomes clear...he had a plan in place for over a year to "disappear" Susan.

@@preston2636 It's all CPS regardless of which string of initials they're identified by. A lot of people use CPS as a generic term for any child protection and family intervention.
I hate to admit this but if you ever go on any mainstream and legal porn site, they are littered with all kinds of images, and some are anime/cartoon images. They sound disgusting but then again, porn is disgusting so... It's not unreasonable that cartoon porn images would be cached. It doesn't mean anything was illegal or that the person was even aware they were cached in their browser. The point i'm making is, the police used this against josh to keep his kids away which led him to do the unthinkable. All from images that sound gross but are legal and can be downloaded without the users knowledge as well as remain on drives bought second hand. As someone who works on repairing computers for a living it's very common to find porn in browser cache folders. websites are always sending and receiving data which is why virus and firewall protection is a big thing as well. This was actually a very minor thing that could have and should have been tossed out during a trial.
that's not what happened...josh admitted to Dr James manly he searched the images and admitted to his friend Tim Atkins he also did it. it was specifically incestuous images with children being abused by adults
