This game needs a remake, so many modern QoL features could make this a top tier game Examples 1) encounters should be visible on the overworld the way it is in tales games OR allow for encounter rate modification in the settings similar to Bravely Default 2) you should not have to MAX out a weapon more than once, if you max out a Grand Edge once, you should immediately be able to fuse any further grand edges that you purchase/find. 3) insectron shouldnt be RNG and should be much more streamlined that way it doesnt take so much setup and be more accessible. Example is, you will always find a specific species on specific maps. 4) running speed is slow, at least let me sprint. 5) clean up the ending. Just diminishes kisala as a character 6) you should be able to buy ingredients or have a catalogue that tells you exactly where to find items and monsters 7) factory can also be streamlined, i dont want to spend 20 minutes setting it up
Rogue Galaxy was originally intended as Sony's answer to Final Fantasy, to the point of even having music that sounds similar to some soundtracks in Final Fantasy games. Needless to say, the game didn't live up to those expectations, but Level-5 still went on to make many very respectable and successful game franchises. Also, Steve Blum voices Zegram. "Have a taste of some Hellfire!" is one of my favorite special attacks lol
The only thing I'd have liked to see that wasn't mentioned was the factory system. The music in the factory is also super nice! Also a touch up on your comment about the game being inspired by Star Wars and not trying to hide it is actually even further obvious in the Insectron! There's a bug that's just the Darth Vader mask and it's the strongest bug.
That's awesome. I didn't play enough of the Insectron tourneys to notice that. I did want to work in the factory stuff but kinda forgot. Whoops. I had fun with it though, and you're right about the music.
This game is a real gem, i found it in a store when i was a kid in 2008/9 when all ps2 games were in the outlet section to make space for the Ps3 games, i had a blast, this game is a little piece of my heart, i was so happy when my mother bought it for me, i recently found a japanese factory sealed copy of this game, i added it in my collection of sealed videogames and i also found a cheap used japanese copy (director cut version) AND i bought a prerelease promo copy of this game to play lol😂
A lot of this one felt like a refinement of the systems and things found in Dark Cloud 2/Dark Chronicle, and that is not a bad thing. They expanded the party from four, to allow for you to have more playstyles, each party member has a role, but nothing they HAVE to do, and while Jaster does end up being the strongest by virtue of his gear, unlike Max in Dark Cloud 2, or Tuon in Dark Cloud 1, the others in the party never fall TOO far behind, and in fact, can still be better than him in some situations, which was a lot of fun. That said, I loved the conversations walking around could give you. They were random, and based off your three active party members, with every combination having a huge amount of things to say, either about each other, the other party members, the situation they were currently in, or even better, things the player has done, like being near death, or just leaving the console on for a while. Good stuff that fleshes them out rather nicely, in addition to their stories. That said, this was a case of, this story went through LOADS of rewrites. You can tell because of how it bounces around between Galaxy, Solar System, and even universe scale sometimes with what it's talking about. It doesn't help that there's time travel at one point, and that there's an enemy star nation apparently fighting the one that rules Jaster's home, an enemy we never actually see, even in the extra content, but unlike what you'd think, they don't seem to be made up, they just never appear.
Grew up playing this game😊me and my sister would spend hours and hours. Grinding mobs getting new weapons. And just overall having a blast.🎉 Would definitely love to see a remaster. Or better yet, even a sequel.❤❤❤
I've been looking at this game for years and just recently realized it was a Level-5 game. I have to pick this up now that I know that. Checked out this video after I found out to see more about it. Looks like a great addition to the Level-5 catalog. Very familiar systems at play here. Dark Cloud 2 is still one of my all time favorites and looks like more than a few familiar elements were brought over.
Great review, I've had this and an emulator ready together for a while but unsure if I should start or not. This has made me realize I should be for familiar with console jrpgs. That might be a while but this review was a real great watch and I'm glad I didn't jump into this without this viewing. Thank you!
Cool review. Rogue Galaxy is my second favorite PS2 JRPG, right after Dragon Quest VIII. One thing they never get enough credit for is the amount of stuff on screen devs managed to put while the game remained fluid and aesthetically beautiful. Especially in scenes where there is a lot of foliage, water transparency, texture variety while multiple animated characters are in view too. I also LOVE the handpainted texture style that reminds me of Dragon Quest VIII but with a tad bit darker tone. Super impressive and ambitious work by Level-5. Keep up the good work.
Just finished the game tonight and got on here to find other takes haha. This game does get very easy at the end even if you just burn through the story. I finished at 33 hours and I think the difficulty spiked when you end up in jail way early on and then it smooths out quickly.
This game and legend of dragoon are two games i WISH got sequels. Even though neither's story's are "amazing" there is just something about them. They have a level of (for lack of a better word) mystery that i feel never gets fully explained. I didn't even realize rouge galaxy got a re-release on the ps4. That's kinda amazing considering how much of a response (or lack thereof, iirc) it got when it released.
I remember playing this with my uncle like 3 years ago, would recommend playing but use a guide, and it will take A LONG TIME to finish, it took me and my uncle like 3 months (but we only played on the weekends lol)

You can really see this game was originally Dark Cloud 3. The bones of it are there. Sony had greenlit it but then asked for changes, removing content like georama and replacing it. Wonder what it'd have looked like if they'd stayed the course.
I love this game so much, i remember playing it when i was a kid, it was such a LONG game, worth the money, i recently bought it AGAIN on ebay, one japanese factory sealed copy for my collection and one used prerelease promo copy to play, can't wait to play it again!
My dad is not a gamer at all. Like zero knowledge on games but when I was a kid and when I asked him to get a game for me he always finds like the best substitute for it. Asked for Pokemon he gets Digemon which I loved Asked for Eagle One he got me Ace Combat a franchise I still follow. Asked for Final Fantasy and I got Rogue Galaxy which I come back to every year. Either through the PS2, Emulator or PS4. I would have never found out for these games if it wasn't for him.

Maaan I remember I used to always see this game on the shelf at Blockbuster back in the day but I didnt have a PS2 back then! I would always pick up the case and look longingly at the screenshots and read the back of the box. I think by the time I got a PS2 later, the Blockbuster had already closed up :/ its a real shame cuz I think I wouldve really loved this game!
It's crazy... I bought this game. I played this game. All the way up until the (I believe) third act, or at least past the halfway point. I remember enjoying it. What I don't remember is... anything about it.
I considered this game my best game overall other games. Ambience desing songs characters and story. I thing its not only nostalgia childhood but this is very best adventure game jrpg. And i love graphics models because now all other games similar like graphics to much anime style...
I like this but it feels like the more copies of an item you need to fill out the license grids the rarer it is. Also some enemies have too many different drops for my taste. I remember spending hours grinding an enemy looking for one item, and in all that time I only got one copy of it besides the first one which led to the grinding spree. Then one copy of the enemy dropped another item I needed more copies of and had no idea it dropped. So I had to spend hours grinding the same enemy for two different items each of which I needed several copies of.
I played this game back in like 2015 and enjoyed it since I liked dark cloud by for some reason the random battles got really annoying wish you could use an item to stop it like holy bottles in tales games
originally lebel 5 wants to make wayyyy more planets, more than 20 if im not mistaken but get veto by sony , since its gonna take too much development time and budget and ps2 is in the death bed era since ps3 already out
This was originally supposed to be DC3 in fact the full title in some early beta was called DC3: Rogue Galaxy. They ended up ditching the georama system since they couldnt find a fresh way to incorporate it, eventually they dropped the DC3 title aspect and voila Rogue Galaxy
I put a warning before the spoilers and a timestamp to skip to. It's not reasonable to expect a retrospective of a 15+ year-old game to be spoiler-free.
Final fantasy inspired themself to make remake like this...also ancient core or however the heck was called it No wait...this is a guilty gear think...final core? Whatever:D
It’s a shame Japan Studio shut down. Apparently because Sony thought games made for the Japanese market wouldn’t sell well in America. How anti-weeb of them.
I had this game given to me, and I've yet to play it. Figured I'd see if it's worth a go. JRPGs have always looked appealing, but actually playing them is an absolute bore. I've dabbled in the major usual suspects, but haven't been able to get into any of them. I haven't found one yet where the combat system was engaging. Wading through menus during what's supposed to be a heated battle just isn't appealing and slows the action down to a crawl. It's a shame because I want to play them, but every time I get to around 10 to 15 hours in, I realize I've wasted my time on a genre I'm just not into.
Hey, props for giving them a try. This one has a lot of menuing in battles as well, but you're not in them for long. This may be a long shot, but you might enjoy Xenoblade Chronicles's combat. There's no separate menus; you select commands in real time as you move around to aim your attacks.
While the game looks amazing and fun, and is definitely my kind of game (I discovered it thanks to the amazing Astro Bot!!), that frame rate is absolutely DISGUSTING and should be illegal. AND it's a "remaster"/re-release!!! What is it, 15?20 fps?? Someone needs to be jailed for that. And it's an action-JRPG game, not even a turn based one!! That makes it borderline unplayable. Absolutely RANCID!! What a shame :(
The game doesn't run like that I played it to death on PS2 and it runs amazing dude I fucking loved this game in my childhood I think he is running it on an emulator and his PC is from the PS2 era 😂😂😂 I will even put a video of Rogue Galaxy on my channel just to show how it runs on PS5 & PS4
It's always strange when you encounter people enthusiastic about a game that you yourself think is... not exactly a great time. If you love Rogue Galaxy, great. Awesome. Don't let me disparage you. But I just... this game... it really let me down. And mind you, I finished it and even completed the Ghost Ship. I think my biggest gripes with the game come from its lack of unifying cohesion and its story. This game just feels so disjointed. One minute you're navigating a seemingly endless maze of a dungeon where nearly every turn is a 90° angle... and the next you're... ... Assembling factory blueprints? ... And then fighting an arena-style mini-game with robotic bugs? The problem is, none of these systems ever come together in a unified, cohesive way. They all feel so separate from each other and it just feels like a mish-mash of ideas that Level-5 didn't know how to bring all of it together in a cohesive way. By contrast, a game like Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana features systems and mechanics where everything feeds into a unified whole. Everything you do feeds into both the narrative and the overall goal, and it all makes sense. It's an extremely cohesive game and arguably one of the greatest games ever put together. But then there's the Rogue Galaxy's story, and my gripe with it is that there was nothing surprising or original about it. I could see every major plot point coming from a mile away... Oh, look... Jaster's the chosen one. Oh, man... Kisala's a princess. Didn't see that one coming. Again, that's another problem I've had with Level-5 as well: their stories are just so derivative. I feel like I've seen these stories and their big "twists" a million times. The only exceptions I can think of are Ni no Kuni. They actually had a twist or two that felt bolder than any other games Level-5 has put out. And it's sad, really. I think Level-5 is a great developer. Their games are highly polished and well-crafted. It's just they never seem to be able to tie all these well-crafted systems together in a cohesive way that also tells a satisfying story on top of it all.
I can understand that. For me, story is one of the last things on the list of what affects my opinion of a game, so that might explain why it seems so strange. If you're looking for a good story first, then Rogue Galaxy ain't it.
@@rpg_haven .I first played this game when I was 11 and played it again like last year. What I really enjoyed about the game was the exploration and especially combat difficulty .With this game its real easy to get your party faces kicked in if you try rushing through the game lol
@@normalguycap dude are you kidding honestly I really loved the music in Rogue Galaxy, dark chronicle/dark cloud 2 You can search wherever you like TH-cam/articles/forums... You will find everyone praising the music of level 5 games even dragon quest 7 had amazing music
@@MiyazakiSama19 lol most people believe angels are real and transformers movies are some of the most profitable of all time and we all know they're garbage. There is truly no accounting for taste. You remind me of Jerry from Rick and Morty liking "human music." Attempting a numbers argument like you did is an utter joke. This is why morons with no sense shouldn't be allowed to comment. My capture card sucked and makes the footage stuttery. It doesn't really look like this! The game plays very smooth~
Just started today. Kinda hard but fun
This game needs a remaster so bad. It is one of my favorite games of all time.

Beautiful music ❤ love this type of cathedral music for a game. I need this game and I just subscribed 😊 thank you I have a channel too if you like :)
Thanks for watching. Cool channel!
@@rpg_haven thank you :) you too have a great week :)
ill save you a view
YES !
why does the narrator sound like hes auditioning to be a character in the video game with a southern accent?
Yes 1000x yes
originally lebel 5 wants to make wayyyy more planets, more than 20 if im not mistaken but get veto by sony , since its gonna take too much development time and budget and ps2 is in the death bed era since ps3 already out
Isn’t this basically dark cloud 3
Never played Dark Cloud, but same developer, so probably
This was originally supposed to be DC3 in fact the full title in some early beta was called DC3: Rogue Galaxy. They ended up ditching the georama system since they couldnt find a fresh way to incorporate it, eventually they dropped the DC3 title aspect and voila Rogue Galaxy
Less spoilers and this video would've been perfect.
I put a warning before the spoilers and a timestamp to skip to. It's not reasonable to expect a retrospective of a 15+ year-old game to be spoiler-free.
Final fantasy inspired themself to make remake like this...also ancient core or however the heck was called it
No wait...this is a guilty gear think...final core?
Whatever:D
It’s a shame Japan Studio shut down. Apparently because Sony thought games made for the Japanese market wouldn’t sell well in America. How anti-weeb of them.
gimme a remaster/modernisation port of this and lost oddessy and you aint seeing my ass for at least a couple months
Dark cloud 3
@@rpg_haven that's one I haven't tried before. Maybe ill look into it.
how can download this game
It's on the PS4 shop
Its stamina system is really annoying
While the game looks amazing and fun, and is definitely my kind of game (I discovered it thanks to the amazing Astro Bot!!), that frame rate is absolutely DISGUSTING and should be illegal. AND it's a "remaster"/re-release!!!
What is it, 15?20 fps?? Someone needs to be jailed for that. And it's an action-JRPG game, not even a turn based one!! That makes it borderline unplayable. Absolutely RANCID!! What a shame :(
The game doesn't run like that I played it to death on PS2 and it runs amazing dude I fucking loved this game in my childhood
I think he is running it on an emulator and his PC is from the PS2 era 😂😂😂
I will even put a video of Rogue Galaxy on my channel just to show how it runs on PS5 & PS4
That's because of my capture card; the game runs great!
That framerate looks horrid
It's my capture card, not the game
Rogue galaxy aka dark cloud 3.
I named my eldest daughter kisala irieth.
That's awesome
The ending was very disappointing in my opinion.
20fps
Rogue Galaxy was a fun, albeit forgettable game.
Are you crazy? The music is so bad, grating, short, and repetitive for the first 15 hours! Rosa, Juraika, Zerard are all TERRIBLE.
No, the music is fucking amazing in all planets
@@MiyazakiSama19 lol no taste or sense detected.
@@normalguycap dude are you kidding honestly I really loved the music in Rogue Galaxy, dark chronicle/dark cloud 2
You can search wherever you like TH-cam/articles/forums...
The tones are grating, the beats are bad for those places I mentioned and that's not a negotiation. You either know music or you don't and you don't.
If you don’t like the music that’s fine but just cause you don’t like it and think it’s bad doesn’t mean it is as a fact. He likes the music it’s his video, his opinion you don’t agree that’s cool but that doesn’t mean doesn’t mean your opinion is fact. I’ve seen many on the internet tak about the music from this game even some that don’t really like the game itself appreciate the music.
More like Frogue Galaxy
You need a better pc
It's my capture card unfortunately
god i miss that game my septed soil my ps2 and all my games so i never got to bet it :(
