The progression is what i love. Modern games do not scratch that itch of starting with a small mediocre used car and racing your way up getting progressively better. The presentation is just iconic and it feels great.
That's the beauty of Gran Turismo 4. Even when you have all the money and the race cars, there's still pleasure driving some obscure hatchback on trial mountains or destroying the AI with your 600 hp skyline. So many cars to test, so many events and races. It's a single player hardcore drug.

Heyyyy hello dustin, I watch your vids lol! So yeah anyways I really love GT4 in terms of replayability too. It's not just because it's got a load of cars, but the progression of the game is just too perfect to say the least. It's a mix of getting the cars too easily and too hard, like getting a kei car that is enjoying to cruise in a circuit and then replaying the whole 10 mile driving park course to get like the much better JGTC cars that you'll then drive at the likes of suzuka and nurburgring, is something that I would always try and do everytime I boot up the game and I absolutely never get bored of it. And if you don't want to race but you you do want to get yourself entertained, you can simply go to photo mode, play the game on director's mode, and watch the car simply drive all around as if you're watching like those top gear cinematic heli cams, and that's something other racing games lack.

@@eniff2925 well you know what? i completely agree with you. i do enjoy gt7 more than ac, acc and ams2 for that reason. it has more game-y aspects than the others which are just plain simulation and in terms of being games they are half-assed. i only use ac to practice drifting since it carries over irl in my experience. however setting it up including VR every single time kills any sort of enjoyment i have for it. i would much rather boot up GT7 and have a fun race to relax. what i mean about simracing peaking is the fact that direct drive steering wheels and such have never been more readily available than today. remember how much you had to pay for a logitech g25/27/29 back then? it was insane. nowadays a logitech g29 is $150 straight from logitech refurbished. it has never been more accessible at any point of time before now.
so this was the surprise video you were talking about well, considering the success these racing game documentary videos are having right now, this could very well blow up and it's a banger as always great job man :)
Good Stuff Rowdy. With all the enhancement mods, optimizations, and wheel support, now is a great time to get back into Gran Turismo 4. On a side note emulation in general has improved a lot over the years. I'm anticipating advancements to OG xbox emulation which is lagging behind other generations. I can't wait to emulate Project Gotham Racing 2 on pc. It's a classic that deserves a resurrection.
Tbh Xbox emulation doesn't seem all that alluring because all of its games, bar a few obscure exceptions, made it to PC at one point or another. With Sony's stuff it's another matter, same for Nintendo, because they still maintain a ton of console exclusive titles. If PD continues to just make Gran Turismo exclusively for Sony consoles I predict that in 10 years people will be excited over the prospect of emulating the PS5 so they can play GT7 for the first time. I love the series, but nowadays I would not buy a PS5 just for a scant few games that you can't play anywhere else, even if that means skipping a few GT games.
This is my favourite game of all time, one that I put thousands of hours into on a slimline PS2 some 15 years ago. To see it thriving online, and in such incredible quality, makes me so very happy for its longevity
Great summary, not much to add that wasn't already covered in Nenkai's comment, but I appreciate the shout out to Spec II and the pic of the credits page to credit everyone else. If you want access to any newer Spec II builds for content just let me know, although beware they'll be a little more experimental and less stable than what's already released.
Same here but with the GT racing for mobile (with the same name of this series even tho it's not). I loved the Citroen Picasso and the Wolksvagen Scirocco. Now when I see them irl I give them the most indifferent look ever. 😂
I love how specific that comment was about performance. My current only computer IS a 2013 budget laptop with 4gb ram and ATI r4 graphics. I'm sure I'll have plenty of issues emulating GT4. Otherwise I'm sure it's playable.
1:51 bruh how does that background mountain look more realistic in this emulator of a ps2 game than any other modern racing games rn... If only devs use the same methods for creating backgrounds for modern game, they'll have more time to work on car models lol
As a PS2 Slim two owner, I had the game as a gift that came with the console among tekken 4 & NBA, I have literally spent my childhood playing this game and couldn't play it anymore since 2012 when it broke up, this for me looks like a dream, I hate racing games on pc because I don't want to use keyboard but I always forget about the racing wheel that I could use, this sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Back in the days, I never finished the game. My PS2 died and I can only play on my cousin's PS2 Slim for around 3-4 hours during the weekends. Last year, I bought myself a decent laptop with decent graphics card. Emulators is kinda the thing nowadays and I finally beat the game. Not only that, I also learn how to play the game with manual transmission, which I avoided since the very first game. I also applied the beautification mods for it and ... despite the lack of modern cars, graphically, it looks like a modern high resolution racing games. Next is to find that sound mods. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
It almost looks like a modern title thats amazing. So much of my childhood was spent on this game and looking at all the concept cars I'd never get to drive, the funky jazz is pure nostalgia
I got this game when I was 12, it was definitely a formative moment for me. I will have to emulate it, I haven't heard the music in so long and even that brings back memories.
Man, this game really is timeless- and that mod showcase now has me super tempted to try GT4 on PCSX2 (thank God I have a new PC)! Still gotta get used to analog/triggers for this Dualsense I picked up...
Man... I can't wait till Spec II mod comes out to the public. I was replaying GT4 but ran into issues running it in DX12, it was fixed on the latest PCSX2 updates (I don't like how Vulkan bogs down in some menus, DX12 runs smooth all around). Playing GT4 in 4k is already a dream come true, having new sounds and improvements to the game would make it the best racing game for me.
Gran Turismo 4 was an absolute game changer for me personally. I got a PS2 slim and GT4 around 2005 or so and I played it for many, many hours. So glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves, it was such a good game then, and still holds up extremely well. Nothing else scratches the itch GT4 does when it comes to a grindy racing game imo
New to sim racing, only played Forza 7 and recently playing Dirt 3 yet this footage still blows my mind. Beautiful drifting and handling in the snow at the end there, hope I get as good as that soon.
Been contemplating giving the game a try since i've been trying out a lot of old racing games lately, yep, i'm sold, off to grab a .iso from certain archive site and will get to installing the mods shortly. Glad i stumbled upon this video.
I've always played this game on native hardware for the nostalgia factor (I grew up on the PS2 Gran Turismos and GT3 is actually the game that came wtih my PS2 at Costco), but I've always been curious about exploring this game to the maximum through emulation. When I don't need to have it literally in my hands (that's what the PSP version is for), having this on my laptop could be a fantastic way to bring GT4 on the go (though with a Steam Deck I could have the best of both worlds hehe)! Plus, as much as I'm liking GT7 and its seasonal events, I have to experience online racing in GT4 at least once. I appreciate this very in-depth guide, it leaves very little stones, if any, unturned!
I just scooped this up for 15$ used and am getting down like days of old GT3 as a teen. Also never played 4 , so this is a new experience for me😅. So many hours invested back in the day....
Trust me guys every single racing game that have been released in ps2 n og xbox era are goats .60fps ,clean 420p on a small crt tv ,with two solid ds2 controllers with a bunch of friends lightings joints n pouring beers in the back ground playing nfsmw,gt4,moto gps,ect like their playing a mini tournament daamn bro life was great .Thats how goated those games was ,Hail The mighty ps2 tho brahs
Ngl, even though I have GT4 as a physical copy, I've never pulled the trigger and played it. I always assumed that the hype was all rose tinted glasses. But now I very well might give it a go
The basics are still amazing: driving physics, car selection, gt mode. But surely you have to accept the comical ai or the awful engine sounds. You have to play around those limitations: select the cars with the best sounds, don't use the racing exhaust, accept that you have to play bumper cars from time to time.
Suggestions: add a trainer with options for a jump button, hydraulics, placeable ramps, placeable grind rails, wheelies, endos, nitrous, kickflips, heelflips, physics sliders, neons, night mode, rain, in-air tilt-ability (like gta), speed boost pads (like wipeout), and mp3 music player.
Why stop there? they could also add, tanks, rocket launchers, motorbikes, bow n arrows, boats, team deathmatch mode, capture the flag, triathlons, power-ups, car football, killstreaks, and natural disasters.
That online gameplay you showcased. How is it that this has less jitter than GT sport and GT7. I swear, that is what puts me off from those games so hard.
Good connection in GT4O is a very rare experience lol. I just usually race with the same group of people who are all on PS2's while my PC is good enough for emulation (most of the time)
Man, first of all, thanks for your Ultimate Gran Turismo 4 Guide, i followed step by step and it works perfectly! The only thing, is it possible for you to do a tutorial for the trigger sensitivity buttons you tell in 02:43? This specific step wasnt covered in the other video, anyways, thanks!
I grew up playing gt4 as a kid and still do on an emulator on my phone. This is my favorite from the franchise and I think my favourite game of all time and watching this video makes me want to replace my old laptop from 2013 for something that can run this game with the upscale and mods. 😂 Id love to see new cars added into the game of that was possible but would be cool if the le-mans quattro was replaced with the r8
whats really crazy to me is I remember when gt(1) first came out when i was like 10 or so. As far as we knew the cars were nearly indistinguishable from actual car videos. Each iteration just kept pushing that detail level up. Then you look back and your like "man I can just barely tell what car that is"
TheAdmiester is making a sound pack for GT4 that overhauls all the engine sounds. You can find a demo video on his channel. This game will be perfect with them.
Soon it will be 20 years since its release. I still get goosebumps when I see this intro. This is game was all I needed as a 7 year old and to be honest even today
GT4 is masterpiece... If you watch how it was developed... How much love was put to that game.... If you have original DVD video...And you at least seen that document.... Now makes everything sense... They wanted to make best racing (simulator) game in the world.... In my opinion they did..It is crazy how many cars are there... some prototypes in that time that are now real cars ...awesome...
I put so many hours into this game. I remember I would always have my PS2 to bring it to my mechanics class and we would play on the TV in the class during lunch (with teacher permission of course). We would show him what can be done to modify cars and he would point out how realistic or not that would actually be which in turn would turn into a small lesson for all of us
Highlight of my childhood. The game that got me into cars. I sat in my 90° attick and I'd play this game for like 8 hours straight. I still have the game I need to play soon again. They need too revamp this game
this game is my childhood, this game came bundled with nearly every PS2 you'd buy. last i played on a physical PS2 was around 2017-2019 now i got the damn game on my phone! technology!
What I love the most about this emulator is, that it also do have real Force Feedback wheel support. I can play the whole game with my cheap G29. But there also is a downside. For example the "Le Mans" track with a really fast car, the force feedback is getting nuts. On the straights it just switches from left to right with maximum force 10 times/second and there's nothing you can do against it, except turning the FFB off. When I remember right, it also was a problem on the PS2 itself. I've played GT4 on the PS2 with the G25 and there was the same problem. On the PS2 you had no chance to turn off the FFB, instead I had no other option than play this track/race with the controller. Besides this problem, it's awesome how far we came in case of emulation. It's "just" a PS2, but it also is "still" a PS2 which delivered great graphics for the time and I still love it. Unfortunately my PS2 is now broken, because I stepped on it and the laser isn't reading any disks. 😞 So I only can play GT4 with an emulator and I am so happy that it exists. Thanks to all the people who spent so much time in programming this awesome tool. And thanks to you, Rowdy, for this informative and well done video.
2:03 this is true, even for a desktop from 2012. However, when u compare it on the old pcsx2 versions and the Nightly Build version, its quite literally day and night. While on the old version, it was nigh umplayable, but at least on Nightly u can get 30 fps even if ur cpu is clocking in at 80% utilization
It would be great to see this kind of support for Tourist Trophy as well as the GT games. A cheat engine would be amazing, seeing as the race options in TT are extremely limited. Also, It has been a dream of mine to be able to race with cars and bikes in the same game, if this is even remotely possible.

I have a wheel but rarely use it now because its too much effort to set up every time and not a relaxing experience
@@eniff2925 well you know what? i completely agree with you. i do enjoy gt7 more than ac, acc and ams2 for that reason. it has more game-y aspects than the others which are just plain simulation and in terms of being games they are half-assed. i only use ac to practice drifting since it carries over irl in my experience. however setting it up including VR every single time kills any sort of enjoyment i have for it. i would much rather boot up GT7 and have a fun race to relax.
what i mean about simracing peaking is the fact that direct drive steering wheels and such have never been more readily available than today. remember how much you had to pay for a logitech g25/27/29 back then? it was insane. nowadays a logitech g29 is $150 straight from logitech refurbished. it has never been more accessible at any point of time before now.
so this was the surprise video you were talking about
well, considering the success these racing game documentary videos are having right now, this could very well blow up
and it's a banger as always
great job man :)
Spec 2 Sound mod is the best thing
It's awesome
NiC3
I am developing emulators and I am incredibly satisfied that there are people which appreciate the beauty of emulation! ❤
Dude as soon as the music hit, I got goosebumps freaking awesome.
I remember as a kid being impressed by the most common cars lmao
I entered the used car lots and saw the Isuzu Piazza, I fell in love with it
Same here but with the GT racing for mobile (with the same name of this series even tho it's not).
Thank you for resurrecting this masterpiece
360 camera really should be a standard in all racing games. it just makes it so much more satisfying to view your car in any angle while in motion.
What I appreciated the most is you didn’t tweak the soundtrack because it’s already perfect 👌
Thank you for compiling this. I really hope we can get some light shined on this game. I can't even imagine having more real mods for this game!
Very interested to see more about that Spec-II mod. My goodness. Thanks for this Rowdy.
Rowdy's best video yet.
The passion is infectious!
Gran Turismo is LIFE
1:51 bruh how does that background mountain look more realistic in this emulator of a ps2 game than any other modern racing games rn... If only devs use the same methods for creating backgrounds for modern game, they'll have more time to work on car models lol
Keep up the good work, Rowdy!
Thanks to all the people who keep the masterpiece that is Gran Turismo 4 alive. They are legends!
Holy moly, I loved GT4 and yes seems like I have been out of the loop on this. Heading straight to getting this to work on my machine. Thanks!
Hands down the best intro to a game ever. I loved that game. I spent countless hours playing.
Man, this game really is timeless- and that mod showcase now has me super tempted to try GT4 on PCSX2 (thank God I have a new PC)!
Still gotta get used to analog/triggers for this Dualsense I picked up...
It always amazes how good ps2/gamecube games look when maxed out. Quite a few still hold up amazingly.
same thing for Dreamcast also
nice job Rowdy thanks a lot ,for the info that you give to us :)
Best GT ever and for me the best racing game of all time. The amount of fun you can have in this game is insane!
Can you bring Enthusia to your channel?
Enthusia was the response of Konami to Gran Turismo, a underrated but amazing game.
I’m not really interested enough in it tbh
Enthusia is boring as fuck, if anything it's appropriately rated.
@@RowdyGT You should give it a try regardless. I'm sure it won't disappoint you!
@alexdoesracegamesUntil many TH-camrs start trying it. Seems to be the case with many games.
Intro tho 🔥 Great video mate 😊
really wish modders find a way to use menu car model as ingame car model
Gran Turismo 4 was an absolute game changer for me personally. I got a PS2 slim and GT4 around 2005 or so and I played it for many, many hours. So glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves, it was such a good game then, and still holds up extremely well. Nothing else scratches the itch GT4 does when it comes to a grindy racing game imo
The hours I spent on this game and the long races were just the best
I miss this game and these days
Thanks for bringing me back !
Miss this game, wish we could get a remaster of all GT gsmes
beautiful. GT2 and GT4 are still my favorites.
I played this so much that i realized I was taking the racing line when walking around corners.
Me sliding the shopping cart around corners making sutututu noises
Spec II mod sounds really exciting
New to sim racing, only played Forza 7 and recently playing Dirt 3 yet this footage still blows my mind.
Beautiful drifting and handling in the snow at the end there, hope I get as good as that soon.
none of those games even this one are simulators
Been contemplating giving the game a try since i've been trying out a lot of old racing games lately, yep, i'm sold, off to grab a .iso from certain archive site and will get to installing the mods shortly. Glad i stumbled upon this video.
Gran Turismo 4 is lightyears ahead of its time. Still the king of sim racers.
the intro is beautiful, really invokes my love for cars
GT4 mods is something I didn't know I needed in my life. This is really great! Haha.
My child hood favorite game!
Def gonna check this out, never had the chance of playing it before
2:58 😂😂 this brought back so many memories. I used to do this exact thing
But now I very well might give it a go
One of the best games u will ever play
The basics are still amazing: driving physics, car selection, gt mode. But surely you have to accept the comical ai or the awful engine sounds. You have to play around those limitations: select the cars with the best sounds, don't use the racing exhaust, accept that you have to play bumper cars from time to time.
It rocks
God I cannot stand that bullshit rose tinted glasses argument.
will be playing this and subbed now good sir. thanks so much
Suggestions: add a trainer with options for a jump button, hydraulics, placeable ramps, placeable grind rails, wheelies, endos, nitrous, kickflips, heelflips, physics sliders, neons, night mode, rain, in-air tilt-ability (like gta), speed boost pads (like wipeout), and mp3 music player.
Why stop there? they could also add, tanks, rocket launchers, motorbikes, bow n arrows, boats, team deathmatch mode, capture the flag, triathlons, power-ups, car football, killstreaks, and natural disasters.
3:35 heyyyy its meee :D
Nice
That rally section at the end looks CRISPY.
i love how casual you were with the fact that you were in a lobby with BK4
It's incredible how after 19 years the game now looks the way I imagined it did behind the fuzzy CRT tv
I grew up playing gt4 as a kid and still do on an emulator on my phone. This is my favorite from the franchise and I think my favourite game of all time and watching this video makes me want to replace my old laptop from 2013 for something that can run this game with the upscale and mods. 😂
Id love to see new cars added into the game of that was possible but would be cool if the le-mans quattro was replaced with the r8
I love these kinds of breakdowns. Wish more ppl did videos like these on emulators.
whats really crazy to me is I remember when gt(1) first came out when i was like 10 or so. As far as we knew the cars were nearly indistinguishable from actual car videos. Each iteration just kept pushing that detail level up. Then you look back and your like "man I can just barely tell what car that is"
me: finishes smoking
gran turismo 4 intro: 🎶
me: sheds a tear and lights another one
TheAdmiester is making a sound pack for GT4 that overhauls all the engine sounds. You can find a demo video on his channel. This game will be perfect with them.
2:44 trigger and face button sensitivity is baked it because of how DualShock 2 controller had pressure sensitive buttons.
Soon it will be 20 years since its release. I still get goosebumps when I see this intro. This is game was all I needed as a 7 year old and to be honest even today
This is definitely nostalgia talking, but the intro to GT4 still hypes me to this day
GT4 is masterpiece...
I spent a lot of time playing that game! It was great on the sim set up! Ferrari F-40 was my favorite vehicle to drive.
Man that snowy stage looks so beautiful
Nice!!! I need to play it again
I put so many hours into this game. I remember I would always have my PS2 to bring it to my mechanics class and we would play on the TV in the class during lunch (with teacher permission of course). We would show him what can be done to modify cars and he would point out how realistic or not that would actually be which in turn would turn into a small lesson for all of us
My favourite series out of all GT ❤
Was waiting for you to make an updated GT4 insane graphics video
5:40 i don't even like cars (as a means of transportation), but that sounds SO GOOD
Highlight of my childhood. The game that got me into cars. I sat in my 90° attick and I'd play this game for like 8 hours straight. I still have the game I need to play soon again. They need too revamp this game
this game is my childhood, this game came bundled with nearly every PS2 you'd buy.
last i played on a physical PS2 was around 2017-2019
now i got the damn game on my phone! technology!
I would love the ability to mod more car positions in races so that you can race more than 5 cars.
So I only can play GT4 with an emulator and I am so happy that it exists.
Awesome. When I can afford a good steeling wheel for PC, I'll check it out.
Impressive actually, wonder if more npcs/racers could be added, imagine racing 12 or 16 cars on gran turismo 4; that would be awesome ngl
on GT7 you can race up to 20 Racers
We’re talking about mods for GT4 though
@@SlavicUnionGaming too bad the game is always online garbage.
