Rick Wakeman's full of stories and loves telling them.
He's actually a bit of a minor celebrity in the UK, in the sense that - beyond his musical career - he's often been invited onto panel and talk shows, simply because they know he's always going to be entertaining, with a hundred funny stories to tell.
Like, in the UK, he's as much known for being "the funny story-teller guy on the TV" as he is for his musical career and, with the younger generations, that's probably more what he's known for than his music, funnily enough. Yeah, even with the impressive musical history he's had.
Yeah, Rick's the sort of interviewee where you give him one question, and he'll just keep talking - with a million stories - for the next 3 hours, and it's all hilarious and riveting to listen to. The story-teller is strong in Rick, be it at the keyboard or talking to him in person.

I bought this. I’m an experienced jazz musician, I play woodwinds (sax, clar, flute), worked for many years playing shows, in big bands, writing charts, writing tunes. BUT - I don’t understand pop music very well. I mean, I understand individual tunes just fine, but I don’t GET pop and rock. I bought this course in the hopes of getting greater understanding.
My hopes have been realized - this is a GREAT COURSE. I love music, I’ve loved music all of my 3/4 of a century (+!), and I especially love new insights into the art. I mean, I took graduate theory courses, and it never occurred to me that the last sharp is always on the 7th!!!! You have made me think about things I have known for decades in a new way. The module on modal music solved a problem for me in a tune I’m writing now. Bravo!!

Loved this!! I have a degree in music composition but I see myself more as a songwriter. So what is the difference? It is what Gilmour talks about, that you sing the melody. I was fortunate to grow up listening to a lot of musicals as much as pop, rock, etc. Listening to Lerner and Lowe, Rodgers and Hammerstein, etc will expose you to so many of the possibilities of songwriting... Themes, variations, the same song in different modes, etc. Getting that stuff into your head by listening all the way through those soundtracks will put so many possibilities in your ear. Grease is an absolute master class in all the ways you can use a I iv ii/IV V chord progression. Why were so many of the songs from the musical theater jazz standards? They are among the greatest songs ever written. Start there!!

Theory can help, but it's not a pathway to being a songwriter. If you have the passion and something to say, you'll write your songs.

True, but there's still a basic structure that typical humans find enjoyable, that resonate with them. Then, there is the innovative, and very topical, the Cosmic Cerebral Pink Floyd.

I don’t think lennon was thinking in terms of diatonic mixolydian crap when writing his stuff lol, if you’re a good composer you’ll find a way to create good music whithout knowing much about theory

If you can just do more David G stories, I’ll never stop watching. Love that he was nice, you had Polly there, and Phil. I wish they’d been part of some of the interview. I agree with Dylan, David is GREAT, a higher level.

So Mr Gilmour loves and uses an ancient Zoom device...That really fires a broadside salvo at a lot of gearhead websites promoting tech more than technique! Love to see big announcements, and learn the myriad details that make music great. And attiitudes that make a family great. Godspeed.

Exactly..I went online looking for a used one after he said that..I decided not to. It's not the Car...it's the Driver...David Gilmour could play a $50 guitar, through a $50 amp..and still sound amazing. And like himself.

A songwriting course will be great. That will make songwriting so much more informative coming from you. I've looked at various theory and songwriting courses and I'm like, "Ok. Tell me something I don't aready know." With your courses I'm like, "I really don't know much at all about music!"

Intriguing. I'm a self-taught musician with sketchy music theory. Everything I know about songwriting I learned off Neil Young's Harvest album and Jimmy Webb's book Tunesmith. I just went on from there by trial and error. Sounds like your course might have helped me avoid many of the errors.
