How an Ibis Became the 'Bin Chicken'

- You've all been waiting for this one. We're going to have a look at Australia's most infamous bird in recent years, the Australian white ibis. They've earned a reputation for bin banditry and being a general nuisance but unfortunately we have created this monster. Whether you love them or hate them, they're an icon.
Thank you very much to the following channels for allowing me to use their bin chicken footage:

I remember seeing a bin chicken in the zoo in Japan once. Lost my shit.
LOL like an exhibit?????? Or just... there scavenging like the rat it is?
Weeb chicken?
Damn, they imprisoned my boy in a foreign country and display him to tourists as an example. Probably got caught digging through a bin.
No shit, you look up Ueno Zoo and it still lists the Sacred Ibises as part of the exhibit. And I paid money to see it. Dude.
@@the-Backyard-Naturalist Wonder if it'll miss home, take the next flight back, but not before taking home a nice japanese girl with him?
The stick thing makes sense. Old mate has to build a nest, this proves he's good at going to bird-Bunnings.
he snatched that stick from marketplace and you know it
Hey, Bowerbirds can attest that 'Bitches love sticks!'
Does he go for the snags?
In Sydney the Bin Chickens adaptation to urban environments began approximately 50yrs ago. Taronga Zoo had a small colony of pinioned ibis [pinioning is the surgical removal of the last section of one wing to prevent flight] in an open enclosure. Ibis nest in colonies and as the group grew the free flying offspring learnt the art of scavenging from the Zoo's bins and nesting in Palms. They became a major pest within the Zoo. From there it was a short trip across the harbour to the similar habitat of the Botanical Gardens where they started a second breeding colony.
I found your channel a couple weeks ago from the most common birds video hopping into my recommended, after that I watched all of your other videos and subbed immediately. As a teenager who lives in Sydney, I love the birds that live around here, and it's sad to see them disappear more and more because of those pesky humans, cheeky little buggers. Love the content mate, hope to see more!
What other channels do you like mate?
I fell in love with these guys on my first trip to Australia, and they're still my favourite. My Aussie friends think I'm nuts. I might be, but my reasons for loving bin chickens are solid. They're clever birds.
Hi from South Africa. The African sacred Ibis are not much better, very much bin chicken like. Match them with our Hadeda Ibis and it’s really a slight to behold. Great video!
I live next to mangroves, so I'm always happy to see the white ibises poking around hunting crabs at the bottom of my garden.
I also prefer seeing bin chickens in the city, rather than rock pigeons and sparrows. Happily, I've noticed that there are fewer rock pigeons, sparrows and Indian mynahs around altogether, especially in regional towns.
Rapidly becoming one of my favorite YT channels. Keep up the amazing work!
I love seeing them fly in V-formation its spectacular.
Used to feed the Muscovy ducks and Egyptian geese on the canal bank behind my house in Florida then the American white ibises noticed and just kept coming. Pretty soon it seemed like hundreds.
Why is that painting of the Val wagon chucking a U-ey in front of the giant bin chicken _not_ in the national gallery!
Aah the Tip Turkey in all its glory. Simply elegant, if elegant was akin to an elephant falling down a flight of stairs.
Love bin chickens .
Ive done a little social commentary thing in watercolors of bin chickens telling crack heads to "boot off grubs" and stop messing up our parks and botting ciggies off people that want to enjoy the wild life and not be harassed .. lol.
Bin chicken, you are loved... lol
Bendigo may have bin chickens but the ice problem is worse so bin chickens to the rescue, our unlikely heroes... lol
Yay!
I'm so glad you included Binny
What an awesome video! Great balance of education and humor! Well done!
Wait!
Feral make a bin chicken beer? How have I not seen this?
I need to have a word with my bottlo😁
I hate to hear these beautiful birds referred to as bin chickens. They had a name change from sacred ibis to Australian ibis and now ‘bin chicken’. ❤️🕊️
We love our binnies
This video is along the lines of things that make you crikey that`s a odd one. At the time this video was put on you tube we got our first ever bin chicken in our back yard. Our senior cat that has only recently been enjoying the great out doors after being a only inside cat, near soiled it`s self when it spotted the visitor. Our cat after the initial w.t.f is that moment watched from a safe distance until it got bored and came back inside. Bin chicken could not give a rats bottom about the cat or us humans. It just ambled about the yard.
Love your bird videos! 😂
Best channel on TH-cam
We had one run the state of NSW
Bugger the 'for', I'll root the underdog - or anything else for that matter!
I started seeing these birds in Sydney in the mid-1980s, poking their beaks into bins and dumpsters, making the best use of human food waste.
So no mention of the bin chickens in Brisbane despite showing footage of the deviants in southbank... appalling.
Lol all jokes aside, this was a perfect and professional way of describing our garbage vultures
Got to reassess my life choices..I never got a stick...😂
That was genius narrative. I fair dinkum thought they were introduced too! Still hate then though, just not as much now. New subscriber.
Ah, the tip turkey.
Nice vid mate!
Respect
What a hilarious take on our favourite urban menace! I’m honoured to have my footage featured here 😂
I'll take bin chooks over most humans
Had friend from overseas come down for a holiday. At a cafe one flew up next to her. She screamed and yell "what the f@#! is that". Made my day...
My grandchildren arrived from Finland a few days ago and saw their first bin chicken in the flesh. They were pretty excited because I’d sent them the iconic children’s book about bin chicken.
They’re a bit young for this video but their parents will get a laugh.
That's what I'm saying when I give a chick my stick they lose it 😂
I already knew they knew how to eat cane toads because a few animals in Australia are adapting pretty well to cane toads. The Australian Raven is another that knows how to eat cane toads.
i belive magpies have also been spotted learning the behavior
The rakali can eat them too, apparently they are now immune to the poison
@@aubergineeggplant3114 The Rakali aren't immune, the ABC had thing on it. Those cheeky little rats instead flip the toads over and eat the hearts and livers out of the toads whilst they are still alive. Then they just leave the toad to rot on the river bank.
Fun Fact: Crows being mental, eat the parotid gland out of the cane toads. Every other species tries to avoid the toxin and these champions straight up eat the most toxic part of the toad.
Water rats too. White tipped tailed ones.
I heard about one species not too long ago! I can’t remember what species but it may well have been a raven because they are so intelligent. Whatever it is flips the cane toad over onto its back to avoid the venom glands. I’ve watched many, many ravens here in Tassie. Love ‘em!
I actually admire these birds, the way they’ve adapted to the urban environment.
They don’t seem to exhibit bin chicken behaviour in Melbourne, where I live, but I’ve seen bin chicken behaviour first hand while on holiday in Queensland.
I once ate food at an outdoor restaurant on the Gold Coast where the ibis were craftier than seagulls at stealing food from the diners, it was quite funny and I had to be careful while eating so that they didn’t pinch my food.
They learnt from the locals
hahaha😂
At a pub in Brissie, one of the bartenders offered free beers to people who would chase the birds back outside lmfao
Adapt and survive, is the name of the game.
These massive units of a bird do deserve their own video. I seen a black version recently.
Probably just a particularly dirty bin chicken :P
What drugs are you taking lol 😂
Saw* not seen.
No education
This is clearly a regional dialect you can’t “educate” that away. People like you are so annoying you clearly understood what OP was saying and instead are patting yourselves on the back for knowing the prestige dialect when I guarantee OP knows too and just chose to write how they speak most naturally.
OP, if you saw a black one then you may have seen a bird with a melanistic mutation where it produces too much pigment.
Mucus filled kazoo is the best description of the ibis call that i have heard
Your last video got me into birds, I’ve now counted 32 species in Redlands city Brisbane and still counting, and this video reminded me that I saw straw necked ibis so that’s actually 33
I've recently bin chicken out this channel. Quality content.
**Oh my LORD.**
Quality comment.
Nice dude
Now that's Punny.
All hail the glorious bin chicken!
Thanks for this excellent tribute to a much-maligned bird - one of my favourites.
“That reject shop California look” hahahahaha ain’t that the truth. I always thought that after visiting LA
As a farmer and a bird nerd I adore this channel so much 😭 Fr my new favorite to watch
Sorry for dunking on farmers so much, I know a lot of you care about the environment
Informative and at times hilarious, I look forward to the next installation.
I now have respect for bin chickens, thank you for making this video
"mucus filled kazoo" is probably the most accurate description for a bin chickens call I've ever heard.
I lived in Noosa a long time... doesnt matter how fancy they think they were, a Bin chicken shit to ya BMW brings you back to Aussie reality real quick.
Solution: don't own a bmw
@@tehblacksmith9302 Tell Noosa that... wanky place. I did love it though.
Noose is cuntsville. Bunch of stuffy rich white people who think they're cultured because they own a beachfront property. For people from Sydney, Noosa is basically the Manly of the Sunshine Coast.
Uncannily good saruman impression, good god.
I thought the same thing.
I'm glad you mentioned the smell, they really do stink, particularly when there's a whole flock, the smell alone is enough to ruin a picnic.
As someone how is really interested in birds and is from australia I love your content so so much. I have a few king parrots that I feed on occasion. I really love birds.
Don't try to trick a king parrot into landing on your arm if you aren't holding food. They'll bite your thumb, and it'll bleed.
*Source:* This happened to me twice with two completely different parrots. It must be a king parrot thing...
@@JohnGardnerAlhadis lol, the ones I have at my house are females and are quite timid (although I can get close) although a few weeks ago there was a male at my house which has only showed up once, it let me hand feed it but if I didn't have sunflower seeds it would bite lol, it was gentle bites unlike my conure lol.
I love the Bin Chickens, they are a true adaptable survivor and they are acutely aware and obviously very intelligent. They don't miss a thing and if they detect your eyes on them for more than a few seconds they will immediately make distance on you. These guys notice everything
Didn't notice my bro doing a hot lap in his STi the other day
Feathers everywhere
I agree. I've always loved ibises. I never understood the hostility. It seems that if you come up with a catchy insult people will follow. Better that ibises want our waste than crops. And it's better if food waste goes into their stomachs than into landfill.
Like the 'Wagga Wagga Wet Wipe'. When you lick the toilet paper for enhanced cleansing. Spread the word
I love them too, but a whole bunch of them ambushed me and my friends when we were kids and stole our lunches right out of our hands, so I can see where some of the haters are coming from 😂

I've loved these little plague doctor birds from the first day I entered Australia. Love your content mate, would love to see a video about or mentioning cockatiels, they're amazing
One time me and my bf were on a walk, and there was this huge grass plant, the one that kinda resembles wheat. It was dried up so we figured it was fine to take. He picked a stem and gave it to me, and I was thiroughly happy with it for the next 15 minutes until I teased him with it one too many times and he took it away from me. But I completely understand how a female would love a big stick lol
"When God created earth, he put australia on hard mode"
I remember being in grade 4 or 5 at Altona East primary school in the mid 80’s when one of my younger class mates ran up to me at approaching recess time and said (and I quote): ‘There’s monsters on the oval.’
I could tell he was genuinely excited so there was something in his urgent tone that needed some unpacking when I realised I’d seen some Ibis strutting around our oval in days prior.
Sure they’re weird looking… but they’re still here, working their grind.
Absolutely perfect in every way. The images at the end are beautiful.
They are indeed noble little Thothages, *hold for laughter from egyptologists*...
That was awesome! Shout out to Coburg Lake bin chickens @04:56
"IBIS" in Victoria. Beautiful native birds fully protected by federal law.
Well, I found your video on Ibises to be humorously entertaining. I share the share the same sentiments about them as you do. They are survivors
and their protocol is adapted out of the crows survival handbook. I'm sure they went to the same singing classes as well. My wife differs greatly
in her opinion. She is convinced they are of exotic origins and spread horrific diseases because they didn't go into isolation on arrival in Oz.
Yesss!! I've always said the bin chicken is underrated.
But why “chicken”
Why not, I dunno, pidgeon, or some other bird as omnipresent* in peoples’ day-to-day lives?
Edit: Wrote omnipotent on accident
This is a really wonderful video. Unfortunate to think the situation for the Ibis may get worse. We pray for these wonderful birdies!
You bloody beauty! So excited to see a new video pop up and it was fantastic as always ^_^
As a Freo (WA) resident, we don't tend to get them as much round here (in the suburbs) but you will as you get closer to the river. Indeed, before I saw an incredibly funny mocumentary of a David Attenbourough video, I had no idea these lawn-dwelling fellows were called 'bin chickens'. Maybe it's more of an Eastern Staters thing? Regardless, love em. Hope you'll do a video on the rainbow lorikeets! They're so loud and chaotic, always handing upside down, doing twirly-whirlies. We used to get only a few in our yard but since everyone else has subdivided and the developers ripped out the trees (one of which was a towering ghost gum, RIP), they head to our backyard for most of the day. Naturally, we oblige with 3 water bowls of varying sizes and heights.
I love the ibis. It’s a misunderstood bird that we as a people faulted its growth. They eat out of bins for necessity. We took over their marsh and grasslands. They’re just trying to survive. I low-key think they’re cute.
I had an Ibis statue from Egypt ...man's body. They make a mess here. Seven Hills.2147
After years of complaints many bakeries and shops in Healesville have moved to bins that have a lid and....this one was hard......closing the lids of dumpsters 😏 took a few years
One of the Birds that people love to Hate in my town / back yard is the humble Plover .. i am a Lover of Plover .. Hooded Lapwing. They have poisonous spurs like a Platypus ? ALSO A close glance reveals a very 60's Beatles Haircu.t. could you Please elababorate ? ( Very SWOOPY ) Clever eggs on ground no nest technique.. wish I thought of that ?
Awesome video. Great job, mate. Still hate them, though. Rats are also "adaptable". It doesn't automatically mean they're deserving of my praise or respect, haha.
Absolutely brilliant little video thanks so much for sharing and expanding my limited knowledge of this bird. Thought calling a certain ex New South Wales premier the bin chicken was funny now you’ve enlightened me it really is an insult to this great Aussie bird. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😉😉😉
I might make a Bin Chicken Anime Girl
Ah! The mighty & majestic Bin Chicken, with the potential for the grace & reverence of swans, but enough of an Aussie larrikin to instead go "Fuck that!".
I love that it's part of Aussie Culture to the point of being socially mandated that one must bellow out "Bin Chicken!" upon seeing one!
I truly love this bird, with probably the thing I love most about them being their embodiment of DGAF! For instance, I saw one of these magnificent bastards at the Melbourne Zoo. It had landed in shallow water, as a wader tends to do, but chose to half-arse it when it came to folding the wings away with one wing looking like an outdoor furniture umbrella being attempted to fold back up after a misadventure with strong winds. He was standing there relaxed and radiated growing contentment... but this was the opposite for all the other birds around him, each getting more & more uncomfortable with his half-arsed wing efforts. A bird even flew down in front of him and repeatedly extended & retracted it's wing as a demonstration of what to do, distressed as only a Karen without a manager can be. The Bin Chicken just radiated even more contentment - Legend!
Jesus, even bin chickens instinctively knew to flee Sale!! fun fact, a lot of Melbourne's Bogans were re homed to sale in the early 2000s.. unfortunately, bin chickens, it seems, are smarter because they left, and the bogans stayed...
They don’t taste all that great,
It reminds me of old mate out of Anchor Man feeding his customers
“chicken of the cave” instead of actual chicken..
You just know you’re eating it because it doesn’t have anything remotely in common with actual chicken and apparently in QLD, you’re aloud to eat em..
Every time you order honey chicken, it ain’t honey chicken trust me.
You are right, they relocated the bin chickens and the jail to Sale Vic, sadly the bin chickens left ! The others stayed …..
I find it rather sad to see native wildlife reduced to being called "Bin Chickens". We sprawl out into their habitat, taking it away at alarming rates so they're left to exist on our garbage. Yeah... Bin Chickens. 😢
It should be Brisbane's Mascot for the Olympics.
We can call it "Bris-Bin"
The true devotee will, at least once in his or her life, make a solemn pilgrimage to Bin Chicken Island. (The spiritual reward is beyond reckoning).
I love Ibis, and am always happy to see them in my neighbourhood! Happy you gave them their own episode!
Love the content, mate! Looking forward to you covering the humble possum in a future vid.
never, never park or walk beneath an IBIS nest........NEVER
The Bin Chicken better make it as a mascot for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics
Thank You this was great. I have my own gang of 3 loitering around my place and when they eyeball you there’s no doubt they are indeed very intelligent and industrious. I can even sleep through their chick’s constant loud strange cries for food now!!
Behind the scenes of the making "Planet Bin Chicken"....
The bin chicken cultural phenomenon is perhaps the only positive thing of note thst urbanite Australians have contributed to Australian culture which is mostly the the realm of the rural man.
Mucus filled kazoo! 😂 Just subscribed. I love TH-cam suggestions. I've been twitching for a while. I grew up on the Gold Coast. They've always been ibises. Ibi? To my friend in Maryborough they've always been called bin chickens. Can't wait to watch all your vids. Thanks so much!
Rabbits, foxes and Ford Ranger drivers !!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
wait did you just say ibis' can kill and consume cane toads? isn't that extremely rare? I didn't think any native species could eat cane toads
My new tinder pic is me holdinga sick. The birds love it
I was a child at the end of the 1950's. Visiting the Mallee Victoria, the sky was FULL of Ibis who inhabited the local Lakes. I feel so priveliged to have been witness to such a magnificent sight seeing them in full flight in the wild.
Should have a scientific study on their favourite fast foot outlet!
Never liked these guys. However, I do respect the hustle.
They steal my works chickens food, then fly off n sometimes poo on my car lol
can the cane toad poison washed in to the water still be poisonous to other species?
I didnt know that ibis could eat cane toads safely.
I love these guys they have such big personalities
The original "Honk if you're horny."
remember seeing a ton of bin chickens in sydney but strangely not here in melbourne. hope to come across them hereabouts someday
also love your channel, looking forward to more vids soon
Loved the montage at the end. A fitting tribute to the humble bin chicken.
Organ symphony is the new bin chicken theme
Love the Bin Chickens! Visited Sydney once and got told off by the Rangers in Darling harbour for feeding a bunch of leftover chips to the Bin Chickens and Ravens!
Hail the mighty Refuse Raptor 😂!
I hand feed them wherever they are, so gentle for baby Dinosaurs. And talking of Dinosaurs, will you do the cassowary next! Not so gentle bonehead, that it is? Love your channel, T. B.N.❤💯💋
