1:01:13 If I recall correctly, this is because it's a framebuffer effect--the game is actually taking a picture of the screen before you pause. This is why it takes longer on some emulators, including Nintendo's official ones. This is also why on some emulators if you're playing on high resolution, the screen suddenly gets pixellated as you pause, as in those cases, the framebuffer is still being emulated at 240p, so the picture of the game in the background is also 240p.
Hell yeah! And they say that fans are always a bunch of slobbering oafs! Well, I give you our very own infomation man! Running Shine actually seemed to genuinely appreciate the comment, too. I don't even know what to think or if we can trust it. Maybe he's luring us into a false sense of security or something, I dunno...Something fishy might be going on, I wonder if he owns a big van? Eh, even if he does it's probably just a party van. You already know this guy fucks.
Your ability to slip so seamlessly into weird tangents that it takes me a minute to even realize that you were just talking about sonic adventure 2 out of nowhere is absolutely incredible
I was so confused the first time because my brother was watching this so I was listening in the background. I went to make a sandwich and came back and thought he changed the video
I was watching this while editing a commission and I had fallen asleep (been working for too longer) for literally 1 minute, and suddenly he was talking about Sonice adventure 2 and I was very confused lol
The _"oh that's my dad joke"_ is one of several set ups snd pay offs in this mastahpiece, almost 30 mins; obligatory Anthony Burch set-up/payoff _"oh and this dungeon fucks [child Link's version's] wife."_
I can imagine Running Shine make a Sonic Adventure 2 video where he gets to the aquatic mines level and starts talking about the Great Bay Temple in Majora's Mask and just trails off in Majora's Mask
"I shot semen before I saw the Spirit Temple" is such a surreal way to refer to putting the game down for several years. I can't help but remember that line ever few days and laugh to myself
man this ocarina of time review really opened my eyes to the way knuckles has his music reflect his mindset as he searches for the fragments of the master emerald
Shadows music tracks also do that. In white jungle it keeps talking about shadows feelings at this point, where two conflicting voices arise. One keeps talking about being a too cool to care badass and the other is like, "youre upset, you are hiding something".
@@KOTEBANAROT that's actually really interesting shows some character depth that people don't appreciate shadow for though modern shadow is pretty flat due to his arc being over
@@KOTEBANAROT Man that sounds cool, he's sad and hurt that his friend is gone, so he's using his vengeance to distract from the pain of Maria being dead.
@@mylesobrien7477 it sucks because he can still be an interesting character, but sega gives 0 shits so you won't see it in the modern games. But in Sonic X and the IDW run, they do more stuff with him.
1:41:29 The prototype overdump from this January included an old dump of the entire game's script that explained what each of those spells were. The Spirit spell let you control Navi, the Light spell illuminated dark areas and damaged enemies, and the Shadow spell functioned like Nayru's Love in the final game, only it made you invisible to enemies instead of just invulnerable. The Wind (became Forest medallion) spell became Farore's Wind, the Fire spell became Din's Fire, and the Ice (became Water medallion) spell just froze enemies in the vicinity with a blast of ice similar to the fire medallion/Din's Fire. Among other beta elements, these were fully implemented in the '97 Spaceworld Restoration romhack of Ocarina of Time. Highly recommend checking it out, they also show off the cut maps actually populated with enemies and objects, with at least some degree of accuracy.
"Prelude of White sounds like you're uncircumcised but also eight years old so you don't really know the power you possess" Jesus what a masterwork of writing
I'm actively restoring my foreskin for sensitivity gains and funny enough I was stretching it while watching this video when I heard that joke. Had a spiritual alignment with Melo just then. P.S. fuck infant circumcision
I make it a point everyplaythrough of Ocarina of Time to get the Ice Arrows before the Dark Link mini boss fight, because i think it would be cool to try them on him even tho it doesnt really do much
The effect on the walls are light caustics being faked with moving textures. Most notable example of caustics is the ones you see from exposing glass to light, specially colored ones.
I wouldn't say his yiik review was negative and angry, it felt more like a dad taking his child into his room and giving him a speech about how disappointed he is
When you're watching a newly introduced TH-camr to you, and one of your favs who also knows of local events of your smallish town, also comments on it.
Speaking of YiiK, I think he should do some re-visit of that game since the game receive some patches that somewhat fix the story by giving you an option to making Alex's monologue less frequent or mute him entirely (which is hilarious for replay), as well as freshly alter the story a little and even add a new ending to combat that underwhelming ending from Legacy version. Gameplay still a total slog, though. I'm not sure that they fixed that too since I don't wanna bought the game to find out.
@@nomoon327 Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe let them finish what they're doing before re-review the game. Honestly, I do wanna give a devs credit for trying fixing the game's problem entirely instead of keep it the way it is. Though, the damage has been done, and I bet they can recover from it.
Apparently youtube tried auto-generating chapters for this video, but it quite amusingly got some of them wrong and also just gave up after the fire temple for some reason (as well as just leaving some periods blank). 1:46:36 The best fan theory I've read for why Navi flies away at the end has to do with the healing fairies you can catch in a bottle. The theory is that once a fairy fulfills its purpose, it ceases to exist. The healing fairies disappear as soon as they heal Link. The Kokiri's fairies always stay with the Kokiri because they're assigned companions and Kokiris never die unless they leave the woods. But Link isn't a Kokiri, and the Deku Tree only sends Navi to Link to help him fulfill his destiny by defeating Ganon. Once Link has done that, Navi's purpose has been fulfilled. Why does she fly away after Zelda sends him back to his childhood? Because she's about to vanish and doesn't want Link to see her go. It's why Link never finds her during his search before (and presumably after) Majora's Mask: she died.
1:27:49 well, funny thing... Navi WAS supposed to be one of Link's harem according to an old Miyamoto interview during OoT's development: Fanimaga 64 Shigeru Miyamoto Interview - November 26th, 1997 Q: Does Link have a girlfriend? Miyamoto: If it was Princess Zelda, it would be great. However, this time Navi [the fairy] is jealous of Zelda. So within the story, Navi feels something for Link.
1:19:29 Sorry, but according to the gigaleaks, he was being completely honest. Recently ZethN64 was able to restore all the found Ura Zelda content, and it's just an even harder version of Master Quest. The romhack you mentioned was an old project of his that was pretty much all fanfiction and was abandoned long ago.
I always loved the ending of OoT. Its kind of sad because Link is never really rewarded for his efforts in a traditional way. In the child timeline, he has to redo all of his relationships (with the closest navi parting ways for good) and has to live with disconnect of being a hardened warrior in a child’s body. The King and Zelda take the credit for stopping Ganon. And then when he’s an adult he has nothing. All the sages are gone, The world is in ruin, its the bad timeline so Malon is into incest, the Gerudos start protesting in Minnesota.
I like how when Shine is talking about the various girls Link meets on his journey, he not-so-subtly implies that Navi would be best girl if she had some kind of a human form
Man I love how you humanize the development of games on each review, and it goes both ways, people kinda of put some developers as dieties and others like they dont exist. People have flaws and qualities just like the games they make.
Thanks the review Running Shine! I gotta say the bit at 1:40:15 about how art may not end up exactly how you want it to but you shouldn't be discouraged by that, as that's part of the process really got to me. I recently picked up drawing as a hobby and I ended up psyching myself out of drawing early on because it didn't end up how I wanted it to. So when you then said "As long as you put your heart into it you will have something special" Really helped out especially since I've been working on just enjoying the process and experimenting and getting better. So all in all thank you for the inspiration!
Honestly Glad he said that. It's an idea that's sat in my head for a while but it's something I've never really listened to but hearing it with the context of a Zelda being put together in 2 years and seeing the beta footage next to the final release really puts that statement into prospective. It's shit like this that really makes me appreciate Running Shine as writers.
This game has always been really special to me, it was one of the first games my dad and I played together and he renamed Link to Stinky. He basically beat the game for me but it was a lot of fun, me just running around doing goofy things in the game until he eventually showed my how to beat Gannondorf and let me do it. I'll always miss my dad but I'll never forget the memories I shared with him on this game.
I wish my dad was like that. He used to ban me from playing videogames and disconnect the wifi so I couldn't play games on my computer (despite using it to look up animation tutorials). I secretly drilled a hole through my bedroom wall to the living room so I could connect an ethernet cable to the router. He eventually noticed, but I had backups.
aw...your story nakes me wish i had a dad. mine just left to get cigarettes after beating my mom when i was like 4. on the bright side, he left me his gamecube.
I feel like somebody could make a good video essay on how to write video essays with good comedic timing by using this video essay as a subject. It really feels like there's a good amount of thought put into when to put in a funny segue and how long it should be without getting annoying. The sudden conversion from SA2 as a comparison to just flat out reviewing it for a little while was golden. Not exactly a point about the writing, but Mello's Jesse Ventura impression was so good that I didn't realise it was all him until he said "I've been governor". Also, any chance the original art used in this video would be made available somewhere? RK-d did a great job on them.
RK-d is uploaded them right now to her socials. The handles are arcadenonsense for her twitter and instagram, RK-d for newgrounds and deviantart. Happy you liked the video!
I really appreciated how real and sentimental you got towards the end. Talking about childhood and reaching your goals and the wonder that the game invokes. It’s really nice to listen to. I’ve never played the game in my life but something about hearing you talk about it makes me nostalgic and hopeful too.
Anyone else watching this for like the 8th time ever since it came out ? Melo's got such a chill energy in his delivery it's comforting asf. Love your work Running Shine team!
Another certified Running Shine banger. One thing I want to bring up is the fake TV rip at 1:14:00 with the rating bug. I'm a huge sucker for this shit, I've done an assload of autistic research looking at different TV rips to get the look perfect. So many TH-camrs make small mistakes about them or just don't give a shit but this one REALLY nailed it! The rating's at the exact spot, it's the right size, it's there for 15 seconds which on a first watch I thought it went on for too long but no it's the right length! Like I could be really nitpicky and say that there could have been a frame or two of the rating fading in and out but for a dumb joke in an Ocarina of Time video it goes above the call of duty. Damn good attention to detail!
3:49 Fun fact, a game called Death's Door has that, you can cut up the signs then read em and the text will only appear partially, it's a fun lil detail
I think it’s plenty communicated by the fact they have gaping holes where there eyes should be. I mean I’ll take a game making subtle implications and trusting the player to pick up on them over today’s incessant handholding any day.
Just spent about 45 minutes scrubbing around for the song that starts at 1:21:11 and found it, its called Pastel Stars by Melo and can be downloaded off of a link in the description of the video titled "Running Shine Background Music Vol 1 and Update" on this channel. I'm just leaving his comment in case any other poor soul like me starts hopelessly digging for this stand out track. Mad respect to Running shine for not only making but uploading his background music for the public to download.
I really wanna appreciate this one moment at 1:11:48. It's a very tiny thing but making a funny little comment calling back to this detail he pointed out way earlier in the video made me particularly happy.
14:44 I talked with most NPCs when I could and I noticed that the Goron next to the Lost Woods shortcut says something like "we love the music we hear from here, but the passage has been blocked off"
I love that there's an expanded edition of that 5 second gag in the Sonic The Hedgehog review where you make fun of people who can't kill the Wolfos. I always thought that was just you riffing, but I didn't expect people to actually have trouble with that.
A lot of gamers tend to be impatient and forget to do pattern observation It's the same case with soulsborne games, they aren't actually hard you just have to learn how the enemies behave The game in only punishing to those who are impatient
in the OoT manga the writer actually made a good explanation as to why Sarias ocarina is gone, when Link got shot with magic he dropped it and Ganondorf stole it thinking it was the actual Ocarina
@@littlemoth4956in the game he already fucking got into ToT just by baiting zelda and link to do all his work for him which showcases how smart and resourceful he is unlike manga where hes just a complete dumbass thru and thru, are you really telling me he spent 7 years holding onto a wooden ocarina for no reason cuz he already went to ToT and got the triforce and all without realizing its not magical? The manga is retarded and like all zelda manga from these authors the only good thing about it is the artwork
I can't express with words how much I love your sense of humor in these videos, shit like "Ruto's Dry Dry Ovaries" is some of the only stuff that can actually make me laugh out loud.
i fucking love the Sonic Adventure 2 tangent that comes out of nowhere. it was executed so well and was entertaining in its own right that i was completely taken out when the narration paused to get back on track, because theres no divide really, its all quality stuff.
I can only imagine how long this took to put together. This is way above the over saturated video essay craze standard we've seen explode over the past couple of years; the pacing, detail, and humor really showcases the effort that went into it. I also appreciate how many often overlooked aspects about the environment, narrative, and world building you managed to highlight.
I find myself coming back to these reviews whenever I'm feeling down and they always cheer me up. So cozy watching this, drinking coffee, and sitting on the CARPETOOOOOO
lol, that section on wolfos was so cathartic. its so silly seeing how impatient people get. either wait for the opening or throw some fucking nuts no wonder people think dark souls is hard. everyone thinks aggressively and not defensively.
the pause menu IS a 3D square that wraps around the camera, and the sprites on it are also flat 3d objects, coupled with the fact that the game logic doesn't quite pause, as much as the game renders a still of the gameplay in real time so it can blur it out for the pause menu to look cool.
...So what you're saying is that the menu is 3D because it uses pre-rendered 2D sprites, and the game logic doesn't pause because it displays a screenshot of the game whilst the game logic is paused. Got it.
The SA2 section was amazing, it very naturally switches over and the wtf delivery at the end was great. I'm happy you didn't say something like "Wait, I was reviewing OoT not SA2 xD" which is a common "joke" I see in other review videos.
Running Shine is a master of humor. He never beats jokes into the ground and lets things speak for themselves which makes them funnier. For some reason, so many "comedians" either don't understand humor or have such little faith in their audience that they always over-explain and or keep repeating their joke until it's no longer funny.
@@Vincentvalentinezxa It totally was but I think the joke was still funny. Making you "feel" how annoying it can be waiting for the bombs to explode, and having the joke literally blow up on itself worked for me. I also think the std joke in the middle of it was pretty great
Absolute knock-out of a video. Highly entertaining and very thought-provoking, always putting OoT's idiosyncrasies and quirks within the context of game development, and you're not shy about praising its many strengths, while acknowledging the downside of the game's colossally high expectations. 10/10!
A really cool detail of Jabu Jabu's Belly is that it has that wobbly screen effect a lot of games have for water levels, where the picture subtly squashes and stretches a bit. It isn't intrusive in the slightest, but you can see it if you stop and look for a moment. It really just adds to the gross squishiness of it all.
love the behind the scenes/development cutaways the explain some of the design decisions and content that didn't make it in. plans for the medallions to be more than plot macguffins and give link more abilities makes a lot of sense in retrospect. i'm glad they eventually got to do that in BotW with champion abilities, because the OOT medallions not doing anything annoyed me as a kid. "saria awoke as a sage and added her power to yours!" no, she didn't. she gave me was a chuck e cheese token. the real treasure was the dollar store bow and arrow i found in a box along the way. i felt bad that link's childhood friend had to fuck off to the afterlife forever to pray about trees, even if her entire personality was looking like broccoli. after i spent ten confusing minutes trying to equip the medallion and see what power i got, only to realize i'd been gypped, i changed my mind. enjoy your stay in the fountain dimension
There's a bit of a smoking gun of evidence for the medallions originally granting Link real powers that was left in the final game; in the entrance to the Shadow Temple, where there's the platform that you stand on in the middle of the room to cast Din's Fire and ignite all the torches, the platform you stand on has the faint icon of the Fire Temple medallion. It's easy to speculate from there that originally, the Fire Medallion would have given you the Din's Fire ability, but they just later changed this to making Din's Fire its own thing.
Great video! A lot of people who review OoT tend to always try and include weird caveats when it comes to liking it, like they're afraid of just saying that it's a good game. It's really refreshing to just hear someone like the game for what it is, not worried about the reputation of the game at all.
Fun fact: the forest temple was recently found out to actually be the very first dungeon created for the game. Originally when oot was supposed to take place entirely in a castle, it was going to actually be a castle, most likely hyrule castle and feature portals to seamlessly warp from one room to another, a decade before portal created it. That's why the forest temple seems to be such a jump in level design.
27:10 God I remember this. I had a strategy guide from tips and tricks or something and they told me I had to find those gold spiders so I could get the rupee bag upgrade so I could buy this. I thought "this is stupid" and I saw I had an empty bottle and fish right outside so I figured I could catch a fish there. and you can. So one adult tips and tricks writer fell for the 200 rupee fish.
I'm pretty sure the Prima guide said that there is no way to counter Ganondorf's charge up attack without using the light arrows, but 20 years later I saw Link block all of the attacks in Symphony of the Goddess by doing a spin attack.
watching all those people get filtered by wolfos was agony also never seen this channel before and for some reason clicked on it expecting some dogshit lo-fi video essay, but you're actually funny and know your stuff about the game. good video
These guys are quality. It’s not just pretentious spiel talking about some vague reason for why X media is the most atrocious/masterfully crafted in history. Their YIIK and Kirby 64 vids are really good too.
@@littlemoth4956 Honestly I just subscribe to this channel since his video gave me more of those Matthewmatosis vibes that gaming youtube needs more of.
1:13:54 That bit at the beginning of the Shadow Temple still kills me. It’s so spot on for that type of show, like you could totally see that airing if Hyrule was a real place.
Hell yeah, Christmas Day has come early this month. Awesome video like usual. Side note about the Ice Arrows: You can freeze Bongo-Bongo's hands with them and it'll actually cause a unique animation by him to happen where he punches the frozen hand to shatter the ice. His eye will even open when he does this, which you can shoot to knock him down
Oh man, this review has been my most anticipated review of the decade. I played OoT a ton on the GameCube when I was a kid. It absolutely terrified me no matter what. A constant feeling of unease and mystery seemed to fill every inch of the game. It was a fantasy world that seemed entirely *alien* to me as a kid and it scared me. It may have impacted my view of the world. New discoveries and worlds won't be filled with magic and mystery but with demons, and re-deads. Even as an adult the sudden shift in Castle town from "The only place that doesn't scare me" to "Pants-shittingly terrifying" still gives me the shivers. Even creepier, until you go to Kakariko Village, it seems like everyone is dead and is now trying to eat you. This was made even more upsetting when we played Majora's Mask, which has the same lesson to learn. New places are here to ruin your life and are filled with nightmares. This is why I love Zelda to this day though. Hyrule always feels completely alien to me. This isn't just "Fancy 1200s Europe" or "Magical Sengoku Jidai", it's Hyrule. Twilight Princess does this the best to me, as it also introduces a hellish alternate reality that is full of corrupted creatures who want to invade and bring twilight to the world. It's amazing. I love that you talk about the music, because it is something that I never even realized. It is always so atmospheric and helped scare the crap out of me as a kid.
56:44 I'm DYING Anyway, the reason why OoT takes so long to pause is because the game takes a low res screenshot before showing the UI menu. I remember the early days of PJ64 having trouble emulating that feature. Same thing happens with CBFD.
@@sud8492 lol sorry I thought you would get the reference. The song is from Tomba 2. I replied with that because of the infamous Speedrun of tomba 2 at Summer Games Done Quick.

i love these reviews, they're always something that i take time out of my day to watch and require multiple sessions, sitting down with a comfy chair and a cup of coffee just so i can ruin my keyboard when i inevitably spray it out of my mouth
The comedic timing at 1:38:23 made me burst out laughing. Thanks for making another amazing review! I've watched the YIIK one an unhealthy number of times and I enjoyed this one just as much.
"If I was getting ready to go down the stairs and someone told me I was the best stair traverser to ever live I'd fucking EAT SHIT on the way down." You fucking legend, the balls it took to put such a good joke so late into the video.
I always thought the Stalfos and Lizard man fights were really cool. It's pretty primitive combat by today's standards but back in the day it felt like something out of an action movie.
This is hands down the best retrospective and review of OOT. I played it for the first time on 3DS and it was fantastic. My mates always talked about during the late 90s and I never knew why the game was such a zeitgeist. It does so many things so well on the first attempt and its rather remarkable it still retains the magic more then 2 decades later. Well done sir...well done.
Your videos are as hilarious as they are legitimately insightful, both within the game itself and on more abstract ideas. Youre one of the best out there excited for whats next!
Been a fan since the YiiK review and I still find myself coming back to that video and this one quite a bit. Excellent reviews and analyses of the games. Seamless, flowing transitions as information and jokes are presented. Absolutely pleasant to listen to and watch. I personally didn't enjoy Ocarina of Time (I still think it's a good game!) as much as most people, but I do understand why it was revolutionary at the time. Always remember your roots, gamers. Without titles like Simon's Quest or Zelda 2, we'd probably never have our Symphonies of the Night or Wind Wakers in quite the same way.
I've watched this twice now - once at work and once wrapping presents just on the background. I'll probably watch it again tomorrow. This shit is good, you're like Mr Plinkett's funnier nephew.
I really got to say, comparing OoT to Hendrix is a really great concept. Both were extremely influential for their times, creating something unique to be built upon and expanded further. By today’s standards definitely a little archaic and out performed but when taken at face value still holds up very well over time. Great analogy
2 things I would like to add to the section where you talk about Zelda 64. 1. The DD was a flop, yes, but that wasn't the reason for OOT to move on cartridge. Yoshiaki Koizumi was basically in charge of quality control and was very unhappy with the DD version. The disc system was slow and with so many things going on and all the separated areas moving from place to place was a real drudgery because of all the loading. In Koizumi's own words "My Link won't work on the 64DD." 2. This November Giles Goddard shared a short footage of the earliest development stage (the first person phase) where he was working on a travelling method that's very similar to the Portal mechanic. He stated that the footage takes place in Hyrule Castle/Ganon's Castle that still acts as the main hub here. And you can recognise 2 areas that are from the Forest Temple, with geometry and textures pretty much unchanged. So Hyrule Castle's original design survived all 4 development stages, possibly nearly intact in many places. They turned it into its own dungeon and only made layout adjustments. The main hall of the Forest Temple has a very Mario 64 feel to it, and the Phantom Ganon fight takes place in a room that is a remnant of the painting concept. It's the exact same room design. It feels like every few weeks there are new discoveries, especially the new information we have from Goddard gives a whole new perspective on the Forest Temple and the original vision for Zelda 64. I can imagine it feeling like a mix between Shadowgate and Zelda. Fantastic video! It's refreshing to hear positive opinions about the game's most hated dungeons.
This video actually got me to play OOT and learn to appreciate a lot of older games that can seem a little inaccessible nowadays. Easily my favorite video on this site!
I played OoT for the first time as an adult on the 3DS, and the greatness never hit me. At the time I could see how it established most of the conventions used by 3D adventure games, and especially Zelda games, ever since--but that's no substitute for playing it in its time, and I can't remove my familiarity with everything that has iterated and improved on it since. I have always wanted to really understand what it must be like playing the game for the first time, and this video has given me an incredible sense of that. Hearing you describe the atmosphere and the little details of the world, I realized that one thing people don't talk about often enough is how different it is to play a game on a console vs a handheld. While handhelds have their advantages, the much smaller screen and concentrated sound can't come close to matching the experience of sitting in front of a TV, and that was one thing I missed out on playing the 3DS port. I'm feeling inspired to try playing the DKC games on a monitor as well--I definitely wouldn't have thought to do that previously.
Spending Christmas alone this year, I spent my morning in bed watching this video and it was a funny, nostalgic and heartwarming video. Thanks for the effort you put into it, I had a lot of fun watching it
1:47:12 - 1:48:11 This sums up my experience with the game pretty well. I didn't grow up with an N64 but I kept hearing about how OoT was the greatest game ever made. It made me want to play the game but it also set my expectations way too high, which ended up giving me a negative experience when I finally did play it on Wii VC.
53:28 I think RebelTaxi discussed this in his review of Kakuto Chojin on the OG Xbox. Essentially, the sound is actually of certain verses from the Quran, which, while fine to be chanted, is considered offensive to have any kind of instrumental track put behind it. The chanting was part of an audio library and was indeed used as part of the soundtrack of several games, including Kakuto Chojin. The reason why they probably changed it later is likely because, as Pan Pizza speculated, such chanting was actually noticed in that game, which landed it in hot water and got it banned in some countries. Why it was only noticed then is unclear, though Pan also speculated that, due to the post-9/11 climate with the US invading Islamic countries, that sort of cultural thing was more noticeable.
In a review full of excellent jokes, the "dad save file" is probably my favorite because my copy of OoT that I got as a hand me down from my uncle still has his save file that I've never deleted over 20 years later. Thanks Uncle Gary, for starting me down the vidya path.
I wanted to make this comment on an earlier video, but I wanted it to be read: I really like this channel, the criticism is good, there's just the right level edginess and the little bits of sincerity.
1:06:48 I think the reason why Link has a Dark Link version is this game is because he is fighting his "Reflection" And the water is creating that reflection.
As a babby, I didn't realize you shoot down that ladder with the slingshot, I saved and reset to load back into the tree's entrance. For the longest time I thought that ledder lead to some crazy secret.
The delay coming from a framebuffer makes so much sense, holy crap. Thanks for posting this.

The best fan theory I've read for why Navi flies away at the end has to do with the healing fairies you can catch in a bottle.
Thats definitely whats implied. Theres always the theme of underlying darkness in OoTs story.

1:27:49 well, funny thing... Navi WAS supposed to be one of Link's harem according to an old Miyamoto interview during OoT's development:
Fanimaga 64 Shigeru Miyamoto Interview - November 26th, 1997
Q: Does Link have a girlfriend?
Miyamoto: If it was Princess Zelda, it would be great. However, this time Navi [the fairy] is jealous of Zelda. So within the story, Navi feels something for Link.
Sort of a Peter Pan Tinkerbell thing going on there for sure.

Damn, your dad sounded super cool :)

RK-d did a great job on them.

the pause menu IS a 3D square that wraps around the camera, and the sprites on it are also flat 3d objects, coupled with the fact that the game logic doesn't quite pause, as much as the game renders a still of the gameplay in real time so it can blur it out for the pause menu to look cool.
...So what you're saying is that the menu is 3D because it uses pre-rendered 2D sprites, and the game logic doesn't pause because it displays a screenshot of the game whilst the game logic is paused. Got it.
The SA2 section was amazing, it very naturally switches over and the wtf delivery at the end was great.

This is a really good comment
I love how all the sections of the review are carefully timestamped up to the Fire Temple and he just went "ah fuck it."
Pretty sure TH-cam added it automatically for whatever reason. They aren’t even that correct.

I'm pretty sure the Prima guide said that there is no way to counter Ganondorf's charge up attack without using the light arrows, but 20 years later I saw Link block all of the attacks in Symphony of the Goddess by doing a spin attack.
one of the best videos ever i've listened to it like a zillion times now
watching all those people get filtered by wolfos was agony
also never seen this channel before and for some reason clicked on it expecting some dogshit lo-fi video essay, but you're actually funny and know your stuff about the game. good video
These guys are quality. It’s not just pretentious spiel talking about some vague reason for why X media is the most atrocious/masterfully crafted in history.
Their YIIK and Kirby 64 vids are really good too.
Yeah, I clicked this expecting to exit out pretty fast lol
Ended up subscribing about 10 minutes or so in.
@@littlemoth4956 Honestly I just subscribe to this channel since his video gave me more of those Matthewmatosis vibes that gaming youtube needs more of.

I *NEVER KNEW* you could do this to block the attacks I always dodged them, 20+ years and I'm still learning new things about OoT
1:13:54 That bit at the beginning of the Shadow Temple still kills me. It’s so spot on for that type of show, like you could totally see that airing if Hyrule was a real place.
I swear, this guy’s videos are simultaneously hilarious, informative, and relaxing.
1:36:20 navi interrupting you and you responding with an awkward "hey" made me die laughing

Hell yeah, Christmas Day has come early this month. Awesome video like usual.
Side note about the Ice Arrows: You can freeze Bongo-Bongo's hands with them and it'll actually cause a unique animation by him to happen where he punches the frozen hand to shatter the ice. His eye will even open when he does this, which you can shoot to knock him down
Underrated joke: Melo completely SOYING at seeing yoshi 8:30
Holy shit. That YIIK review has become one of my favorite videos on TH-cam, and I am beyond hyped that you've come back.
Same here. Every other comment section about YIIK hates that review though.
@@cultreader9751 Perfect. Somehow that just makes it even sweeter.
@@cultreader9751 Wait, what? Why?
I haven’t seen any of those comments at all

Anyway, the reason why OoT takes so long to pause is because the game takes a low res screenshot before showing the UI menu. I remember the early days of PJ64 having trouble emulating that feature. Same thing happens with CBFD.

I love how there was a secret 2 minute SA2 review within this 2 hour OoT review
Nice video as always
you guys did a great job with this one. it's crazy how much work goes into these videos with all the custom music and, for this one, the custom art.
It's called Lon Lon milk because it's produced in the Lon Lon ranch, owned by TaLON and MaLON
I have been playing Ocarina of Time for roughly 20 years and I never once realised this.
Finally, a new running shine video I can rewatch approximately once every 5 days just cause the editing and humor is so tight
The comedic timing at 1:38:23 made me burst out laughing. Thanks for making another amazing review! I've watched the YIIK one an unhealthy number of times and I enjoyed this one just as much.
1:26:02 is also great, it lulls you into a false sense of security because it sounds like he's gonna play it correctly haha
Just discovered your channel i hope this is the sign of a real comeback; you have the exact sense of humor i've needed from youtube for a long time.
"If I was getting ready to go down the stairs and someone told me I was the best stair traverser to ever live I'd fucking EAT SHIT on the way down." You fucking legend, the balls it took to put such a good joke so late into the video.
"What makes it Lon Lon?"
Figured it out
MaLON + TaLON = LON LON.
I always thought the Stalfos and Lizard man fights were really cool. It's pretty primitive combat by today's standards but back in the day it felt like something out of an action movie.
From this point onward, every video is going to contain an SA2 tangent until we have a full review divided into 5 videos
Without titles like Simon's Quest or Zelda 2, we'd probably never have our Symphonies of the Night or Wind Wakers in quite the same way.
crazy how closely released this and Sonic Adventure were. just 1 month apart....
what a time to be alive

In Koizumi's own words "My Link won't work on the 64DD."
I feel like im in a secret club, watching the best game reviews on the planet with only 30,000 other ppl across earth
To be fair, the 3DS version sucks out a lot of the dark fantasy/horror atmosphere that the N64 version holds because of the brighter graphics.
I wanted to make this comment on an earlier video, but I wanted it to be read:
I really like this channel, the criticism is good, there's just the right level edginess and the little bits of sincerity.

I think the reason why Link has a Dark Link version is this game is because he is fighting his "Reflection"
And the water is creating that reflection.
As a babby, I didn't realize you shoot down that ladder with the slingshot, I saved and reset to load back into the tree's entrance.
For the longest time I thought that ledder lead to some crazy secret.
That was great. I was hoping he would mention how the island in the water temple takes your reflection to make dark link though. It’s a sweet detail.
