I have been crocheting since a little girl, starting in the late 50's; I've looked at 1000s of patterns & videos in the last several years on the internet - and NEVER BEFORE seen the chainless foundation - AMAZING - and so much nicer looking and no awkward holes showing through! I made my own tutorial with screen shots from the video so I can remember it! I have considerable hearing loss but immediately found your voice very pleasant and easy to understand - yes, perhaps a tone of patience, as well as not rushed - a *DELIGHTFUL* teacher!! I remember watching this video when I was a beginner. I could not master this... I gave up so many times ... I loved watching it again and completing my scarf. It is so beautiful. TY for the tutorial.
I don't do a lot of thread crochet but have done some potholders and doilies for gifts. Interesting that you should bring up the edgings because I have a bag full of crocheted trim from my roommates grandmother that was done in the 20's. Many yards of it! Looking at them, the intricate patterns and some of them done with not much more than sewing thread...the time it must've taken her to do them. It was quite the art back then that not many continue to do.
I’ve been crocheting for decades now and just recently became aware of the chainless foundation method. I’ve tried learning it from various videos on TH-cam but gave up as it just looked too confusing. Your video and explanation is so simple and so clear! After watching your video just a couple of times, I was able to complete a chainless foundation row and I’m so proud! LOL Thank you very, very much! 🙂
Thanks Judy! I really dislike the long chain too and I always chain so much looser than I crochet so the chain-less foundation does me good. You can do it with sc's too. Give it a shot...I'm sure you'll like it!

so using this as a guide to make my husbands winter scarf for this year. i'm pretty much a beginner and have made purses and other simple things so far, i knew i wanted to make scarfs for my husband, daughter and myself this winter but didnt know how, until now. i love this technique and cant wait to try it out. thank you!

It's a chainless foundation. I didn't do a traditional chain and then start a row of stitches, I incorporated the stitches into the chain as I went along. Makes for a neater edge and a sturdier base for the fringe added later.

You can buy it on HL's website or even ebay. The former often has 'sales' that include free shipping. I prefer it when using acrylic because it's soft and doesn't pill nearly as bad as Red Heart but any quality acrylic will work just as well.

I looked all through your previous videos and didn't see any other crochet demos. I'm on row 6 now (on this piece I'm playing around with) and I simply love this pattern!! I can hardly wait to go pick up some new yarn tomorrow to begin this beautiful project. I see one for myself and a couple for gifts for the holidays. This pattern is a definite keeper. I just know you have a few more to share, those stitches are too perfect and even for a casual crocheter....NICE!!

I find it easier to count the 'bars' or body of the stitches instead of the chains on top as sometimes I accidentally count the beginning chain twice. Either way, if your count is off, you will notice it in the pattern as the fpdc won't line up correctly with the stitches below. Hope that helps!

They do a little bit over time and after a few washings. A few ways to prevent it: when they get too split for your liking, clip the ends off as there is plenty of fringe there or to prevent it in the first place, singe the ends with a lighter or over a candle flame just enough to seal the end of the yarn. Time consuming but no fraying whatsoever. Doing it that way does make the ends sort of rough feeling though and I personally like the fraying so I leave it.
I just knew you had to have been crocheting for a good while!! I love thread crochet too. Have made many pillowcase edgings, which I really love because of my maternal grandmother's influence. She always had the big chenille bedspreads with the beautiful embroidered and crocheted edges on her pillowcases. I loved them!! Kudos to you! Will post a response when I get it made.
I really like this pattern :) I'm pretty much a beginner, just practiced stitching a bit on a one-inch square before attempting this. You did a great job explaining the steps, and the fringe looks sooo easy to do, but its probably the best looking fringe of a lot of the crochet patterns I've found. Thanks! so i watched your video late last night i couldnt wait to try it!!.. i am now halfway through first scarf and it is amazing i am in no way an experienced crocheter i have alot of trouble reading and following patterns, but your instructions are so good i am flying through this , after the third row the stitches are so onbvious it coukd pretty much crochet itself! thank you so much for your easy to follow patterns!

Make sure that you get in that last dc in the row. The beginning ch2 of every round counts as the first dc so in your case, row A should have 15 fpdcs in the row with 1 dc at each end and row B should have 14 fpdcs with 2 dc's on each end.

I am going to try this pattern and I love the tip on how to start the scarf without creating the chain then crocheting in the stitches. I too hate the look of the first row in my scarfs because of the chain stitch. Plus I have never really added fringe but this time I think I might because I like your method of calculating, cutting and applying the fringe. It didn't take long to master casting on in this way ... do try it, it gives a much neater and more elastic first row. AND I got the other stuff too, I felt lost but soon saw the pattern develop. I like your style of teaching. Brilliant! Thank you!

It is an extremely soft yarn. Almost like silk. Not at all your typical scratchy acrylic. You'll enjoy it!

Love love this tutorial, I have struggled with the chainless foundation and watching you do it I now see where I was making my mistakes. Awesome stitch. and love this pattern. :)
Glad I could help you out on the chainless foundation! Once you get it down, you'll never go back to the conventional chain again. :-)
It didn't take long to master casting on in this way ... do try it, it gives a much neater and more elastic first row. AND I got the other stuff too, I felt lost but soon saw the pattern develop. I like your style of teaching. Brilliant! Thank you!
