Hi guys. I think the system would be so much better if it was designed to fit a single cab pickup instead of a twin cab. Why would you want seats? I'll bet you just pile stuff on them. Just imagine how much more space you would have in the back. And where the base of the seats are could be huge storage compartments or some draws too? What do you think guys 🤔 😊
I was going to ask how getting upgrades for a loaned vehicle was going to work. Whether you’d be taking them off again or the rental company would be keeping them and offsetting the cost somehow. The wheels and tyres look great, they definitely be something I’d want to keep or replicate on the truck you are buying.

First of all, let me say I'm really happy for you both and I wish you very happy travels. I don't mean to join all those who give endless lists of things you should be aware of or tell you you're in a wrong vehicle because I believe you are in the right vehicle for you cos your chose it. As you are aware snow can be heavy and can drift so please bare this in mind when setting up for the night. Maybe park into the wind? Happy travels ❤❤❤
I grew up in Norway and I smile a bit when some people seem to think Liam and Janine are going to the South or North Pole. Yes, some parts of our Nordic countries can get quite cold, but there is a difference between Coast and Inland. The coast has more rain than snow and much milder climate than the Inland. Some days can be mild in Lappland, then suddenly the temperature drops. The worst "enemy" is the wind. It can be measured as -10C, but the wind can make it feel like -30C. I see that this lovely couple are well prepared, but if they still feel cold, we actually have plenty of shops, also second hand, where they can buy the clothes we are used to wear in the Nordic winters. 😉 More important than anything is the "underwear". I described that in an earlier video they published. However, I am not worried since they have shown that whatever they run into, they find solutions. ❤ One advice especially for people with weak health, try not to breathe in icecold windy air (if it comes). I did that once when our car got stuck in the snow and it damaged my weak lungs for good. All that is needed is a thick scarf or something similar to breathe through. I forgot to protect myself so I try to warn others not to do my mistakes..... 🙄😉 I am looking forward to follow you guys on this trip❣️❣️

Everything is an advertising deal…the alloy wheels, jackery cafes for food, truck hire company etc etc.. I think what irritates a lot of people is that most people haven’t got time or money to do any of this. Everyone is screwed into the ground.
Mountain Warehouse clothing for seriously cold or wet weather conditions might honestly not be a wise decision. The brand is very much at the entry level where outdoor clothing is concerned, made to a budget and of course the pricing reflects that….so guys if you really are anticipating prolonged periods of -20 or -30 temperatures you seriously need to re think your protective gear buying choices.
I hate to put a downer on you trip but that clothing will never cope with extreme cold. If you can find a Fjallraven shop please go there and ask their advice. I recommend their Expedition Down jackets with a wicking base layer and natural wool mid layer. If you get stuck, run out of diesel your clothing choice will probably save your lives. Be safe guys and have a great adventure.
Agree 100% on the wool. There’s a lot of second hand Fjällräven to bought on Blocket or Finn, I hope they consider that (second hand is normally ok for the vegans I know personally)
@@Grannyma_says For one thing, veganism isn’t just about not killing animals, it’s also about not exploiting them. For another, what do you think eventually happens to the sheep that wool is taken from? They go off to a retirement village and live happily ever after?
Our Winter Survival technique this year is to drive to Portugal after spending the last 2 winters in the UK! We're done with the cold, even watching the UK makes us feel the chill 😂
Please take something like 5 seasons sleeping bags in case of total tech failure. Trace wire on fuel lines (like heated gloves) are a great idea. Gelled diesel and frozen oil in sump is no respecter of pre-heaters. Hyperthermia is no joke! Insulated slippers are a good alternative to unheated floors. Neste filling stations sell diesel down to minus 40. Good luck
I agree with the comments below about clothing. Also a couple of other items you may find you need are neoprene face masks for really cold -30C type temperatures. They really are worth it. We went skiing in Canada and it was an essential item to stop frostbite while skiing at altitude. Also, lightweight thermal gloves underneath padded mittens are much better than straight gloves for cold temperatures. Remember also that cold strikes up so you need very good socks and footwear. Ordinary snow boots designed for light snow will not be sufficient to keep your toes warm..... On a different note. We have just returned from a few weeks in Norway and temperatures there at the moment are ridiculously mild for the time of the year. In Alta, Narvik and Tromso the daytime temperatures were around 11C and night-time around 7C. May be that is just a glitch and they will return to normal by the time you get there. Be prepared. PS: You will find some very good second hand clothing stores in Norway that sell clothing designed for their climate.
Primaloft insulation is really good and vegan. And better in damp conditions than down anyway!! Remember to keep your feet warm, you might need to go a size bigger for footwear so you can fit thick socks in. Don’t squash your feet as it’ll compress the insulation of the socks and make them less effective. Protect skin from wind chill and layer up. Bigger size outer clothing allows for air gaps in insulation to be retained in your under layers :). The yellow jacket u have looks like it would work well as part of a layering system, with a wind proof/waterproof outer layer.
I live in a motorhome and get down to -15c in wintertime. I highly recommend you guys consider getting better winter clothing. Second hand wool/leather is considered ok by lots of vegans, and wool is infinitely better than polyester when it’s actually cold. I feel you are putting a lot of money into the car, and not nearly enough in high quality clothing. I’m worried for Janine 😭
@@adamswift1747 -40c not -40F lol , well thats what he said in the video the jacket was rated for , but the price and where it was bought from it will be nowhere near that low .
@@uptowndisco2 There is no way that is -40 coat!!!! You dont just want something to keep you warm you need waterproof/windproof they dont listen they know best
I'm a bit worried after seeing your winter gear. Minus 40 is without wind chill and the wind can drop minus 10 or 20 degrees more....frostbite in minutes...you need down jackets and , mittens, and even snow pants....if you get stuck and have to dig out or if your heater stops working your clothes can save your life. (Even Eva ran into trouble up there and she's got loads of experience.) ...Wishing you the best.
The battery starting the van will be a problem in cold weather. When in Canada at -30 at my uncle’s they used to plug in the battery to their home electric otherwise it won’t start.
It’s all looking fantastic, the tyres and wheels look awesome. I can’t wait for your trip to begin. So many people getting stressed out about your clothing choices 😵💫 There will certainly be plenty of opportunities to buy some warmer clothes on your trip if you need to. So excited for you. 🥰💖
We were in Longyearbyen last January. For your clothing you should think of it as trapping air. The more you can trap air, that your body heats, the warmer you will be. Thats why layering in thin layers works best. It also gives you the opportunity to remove or add layers as necessary. I would take full merino underwear, tops and bottoms. Ski pants are a must but have to be very thermal ones. Your boots are best as the ones with the removable inners, they are more thermal. Best to get them a little large so you can wear thick socks with liner socks. Mix that with some good Bridgedale socks and liner socks. The spikes you have are a little minimalist if you are intending to go out of towns and walking around. You would be better with real spikes for that. All the best.
Its best to purchase cold weather clothing over there as they make it for their conditions. Skiwear is good, too - salopettes. Anything made from marino wool - Icebreaker underwear. Alpaca wool bed socks.
I am led to believe that van life was about simplifying ones existence at a lower cost. Are you really better off than you were at the beginning in a caravan.? You are a decent couple but your decision makng leaves a bit to be desired.
Not everyone looks at life choices through the same lens though? Decisions that align with your values might not align with Liam and Janines and that ok, right? I'm not sure if any of us are fit to judge their decision making, as long as they are doing what is ok for them and taking responsibility for themselves, I salute them! If we didn't have different ways of seeing things or we'd have the Borg Collective rather than a varied society of diverse ideas? Their India trip was EPIC ❤ and maybe travel is all about the things money can't buy? I wonder if some people find this level of freedom quite challenging or confronting because it quietly reminds folks of how trapped many people have become inside their own lives...or something? I don't know 🤷♀️, but I say good on 'um.
@@TheMinimalistTherapist Im not criticizing their lifestyle. However freedom does cost money. Im asking a legitimate question, and we all know everything costs money. Even freedom.
@@simonbaker6962 I hear you my friend, asking questions is all good, the way Liam and Janine do things makes me question all kinds of things ☺️ Fair play to you.
I wish you well on your travels, Has Liam any experience with driving on snow or getting out of a drift? Im not sure that a60pound jacket is enough for the cold in Finland? the winter is much more harsh and dangerous than you can imagine, even lithium batteries dont like the cold. One last thing don't drain the power on your lithium batteries, if the cells go too low and the cells are at different levels you could damage the battery beyond recharging.
I went on a camping expedition in Greenland one August several years ago. At night I was wearing 7 layers and 3 down jackets and I was still cold, and that was at the end of summer! 😮🥶
I've just heard you say im not use to driving in them conditions,i dont know what to say apart from you are going to have your eyes open when you get stuck and have just the two of you to get yourselfs out of trouble,a frase come to mind all the gear etc anyway stay safe and enjoy your trip 👍
You are probably aware that Norway, Sweden, and Finland have just issued updated instructions on how to prepare for war. Something else to worry about as you travel close to the Russian border in Lapland.
Not criticising, but I wouldn’t trust clothing etc from mountain warehouse. My daughter went to Romania in the middle of winter to help with dog rescue. The coats and thermals she bought were totally insufficient, and it wasn’t as cold as where you guys are going. And the whole family have purchased the most expensive coats from there, and five coats at least the zips broke after a few uses, and came apart at the seems. Again I’m not picking or criticising you, just wanted to make you’re aware of their poor quality control so you both hopefully stay nice and toasty. Really exited to watching your upcoming adventure ❤️👍😊
@@ThoseHappyDays Hope is not a word you should be using with regards to clothing for these extreme temps. The word you should be using is KNOW your garments will be ok. Items bought from Trespass and MW are just not up to the job you will be asking your clothing to do in the area where you are going to be. Skiwear is OK for the main European resorts where temps are normally around -6 to maybe -10 in December (just Google average ski resort temps if you want to check for yourselves) I'm not a troll or a downer, just a realist. When you are pitting yourselves against mother nature's extremes you cannot just hope because when you are there, hope is too late.

Hi guys, just catching up on your videos. After buying the VW camper, can you please clarify why the VW was handed back? You don't actually give a clear reason. Thanks.
Kevin Wald has the same camper van as you guys. He is from Alberta Canada, so winter camping. He has a video of Vancouver Island, no winter snow, just rain. It's the most beautiful part of Canada. Lots of forests, wild life. It's surrounded by ocean, so whales, dolphins ect. It's gorgeous, lots of summer tourists. You would love it.
I highly recommend you buy your clothing from Nordic sellers. They are the experts. Mountain warehouse will just not do. That’s a summer jacket in the north of Scandinavia.
I am full time with no heating. I use a teddy bear throw as a bed sheet, an electrically heated teddy throw and ontop of that a 15tog duvet encased in teddy bear duvet cover. Also - thermal socks (always with the socks )
I really enjoyed all that info you two, every single item, it’s good to know and I don’t know how otherwise I could have come to know it all. So many thanks for beautifully and patiently taking us all through it. Thank you,❤ Susie x
I knew about the engine pre heater, but didn't want to mention it as so many people are loading advice on to you etc. Reminds me of when I had my daughter everyone knew best and thought it was ok to tell me how to do things. I'm sure most of the advice comes from a place of worrying for you though. Will be some great cold weather clothes available to buy over there, only been skiing myself and nothing super cold as I don't like the cold. Googles and ear protection would be on my list, I hate getting cold ears. If it gets too much you can turn around and do other trips in that general area, always wanted to get Amber from sea myself. see amber hunting in Karklė, Lithuania. Baltic.
I couldn't do without my Jackerys I have a 250 and a 1000 one for my shepherd's hut ... With snow predicted in a day here in Devon I need them even more . They are brilliant . I hope U manage to get everything sorted and have a lovely adventure .
If you don't want to feel the cold at all you need to invest in Fjallraven clothing. What you have bought will not do the job, you will be freezing!!!! Get a Fjallraven coat, hat and gloves for starters.....you will not regret it even though it's pricey it's more than worth it.

I'm surprised that you're going with big, heavy, bulky jackets rather than down-filled jackets which are lighter in weight, pack away much smaller and are much warmer. Same with your bedding. Your Aldi bedspread is nowhere near as practical and warm as a good down-filled sleeping bag. I'm aware cost might be an issue but it seems to me you are spending a king's ransom on gear that is questionable. I think I may have mentioned it in a previous comment but check out Chad's advice on his trip to the north of Alaska. You'll find a short series on his trip in a Sprinter van on Living the Van Life. There's also much good advice on things like tires, heater blocks and the vehicle necessities for ultra cold travel. Please check them out before you hit the cold.
Liam, I have those barefoot shoes and I can tell you from my recent trip to Scotland, they are not waterproof. But they are super comfy and warm. So you might want to rethink those in snow and watch out for puddles
Please consieer natural wool for things to keep you warm too. We've had to keep warm in a cold environment and I took advice from those in Sweeden and Finland and wool came up alot. I tried it and its definitely better than some man made fibres. Also I'm sure you're just starting out with stuff but getting the advice from hiking shops or bloggers would support futher purchases for clothing to keep you warm. last winter you took us to beautiful warm and colourful India, this year to the snow and ice. I am so excited for your next travels and looking forward to sharing the adventure; from the warmth of my cosy home
you may want to get ski pants for Janine, Marks and Spencer leggings wont cut it for someone who feels the cold like you do, quilted pants and fleece lined pants are the way to go. a heated jacket or vest is also a great option.. i have all of these and it only get to minus 5 or 6 here in the part of Canada where I live
I put flannelette sheets on my bed in winter because you don't get the shock of cold cotton sheets when you get into bed and you warm up quicker. I also have a sherpa blanket that I put between me and the duvet if it gets very cold as I can't sleep in a warm room but I like my bed cosy. I have sleep apnoea so use a cpap machine with an airtight mask overnight and the humidifier warms and moistens the air which makes things more comfortable as well. I look like I'm about to get into a fighter jet rather than bed. It's normal for me to get dressed up in all the thermals you have to go out on my mobility scooter in winter. My favourite is my knee length waterproof, thermal coat. Stops my bottom from getting wet when it rains, didn't take me long to realise that short coats are a bad idea. I've never liked those silly rain capes that they sell for mobility scooter or wheelchair users. They are not very good and if you want to get up and use your crutches in a small wheelchair inaccesible shop they're such a pain to get out of and back in to. I did used to wear salopettes but that's overkill where I live now but ski gloves are perfect to keep your hands warm and a nice warm wooly hat is essential. ❤❤

Only use my tumbledryer for thick material such as jeans once a week.
Possibly your exposed diesel fuel lines for the engine and accomo heater ought to be insulated or have heaters inline Depending on the grade of diesel used. Southern diesel can take a small percentage of petrol to help prevent waxing - i think.
Good luck to you both but buying the sort of winter clothing you've bought from Mountain Warehouse, Trespass etc is really not going to be up to the temperatures you're likely to have to endure. Those shops are really just "fashion" outdoor clothing stores. We go to more specialist clothing shops even for winter kit for the Lake District.
Have you now checked the current consumption of the engine heater? Rest of your upgrades look good - on car programs I see them use engine battery jump packs which are about the size of a house-brick, but can start engines whose batteries are too cold or too old to crank them. Worth grabbing one to supplement your kit? Anyways, have a good week - see you next time!

Liam, is the Lithium battery you bought fitted with an internal temperature sensor and low temp disconnect? If a lithium battery is charged when under 0C, the battery will be perminently damaged, and can easily result in fires. Generally lithium batteries also cannot be discharged under -20, so you will have to make sure that the battery compartment is always heated above zero ideally.
In severe weather the Mountain Equipment gear will not be up to the job, in my opinion. You need Goretex or equivalent and down. Good waterproofs are essential. In the end you get what you pay for and you need to take advice.
15 pound shoes are most likely not arctic spec. You'll no doubt have another arctic clothing haul. Jokkmokkguiderna has some arctic clothing videos, might be helpful.

Vegans don't use animal products. It doesn't matter if the animal is harmed to obtain the product or not x
@Thenomadpurr We don't blame you! We've been watching your videos, it looks super warm where you are, not jealous in the slightest 😅 TC x
Yeah warm climates in winter would be our usual go to too 😂
Please take something like 5 seasons sleeping bags in case of total tech failure. Good luck
Don't forget a pipe to go with those heated slippers Liam!
I think we are collectively sounding like worried parents!!😊
Shows you care, it's all good
I agree with the comments below about clothing.
All good to know, thank you ❤
Primaloft insulation is really good and vegan.
Janine feels the cold in the UK so your going to live in some of the coldest countries in the world 😂
I live in a motorhome and get down to -15c in wintertime. I highly recommend you guys consider getting better winter clothing. Second hand wool/leather is considered ok by lots of vegans, and wool is infinitely better than polyester when it’s actually cold. I feel you are putting a lot of money into the car, and not nearly enough in high quality clothing. I’m worried for Janine 😭
agreed xx
Janine is already cold at 10c here and wearing her new -40c new coat 😂

Hoping the pre-heater will help
Don't forget the sunglasses or snow goggles for glare. They are recommended on a trip to Lapland.

@@ThoseHappyDaysBuy her one !
It’s a lovely , essential gift .

Van life isn't about cost for us, it's about freedom
Yeah the heater is inside the battery which helps
I went on a camping expedition in Greenland one August several years ago. At night I was wearing 7 layers and 3 down jackets and I was still cold, and that was at the end of summer! 😮🥶

With mountain warehouse you get what you pay for. There's a reason they are so cheap.
We hope ours will be ok, as its skiwear
I assume based on the mods you’re doing you’ve bought the base vehicle? The Explorer? And the demountable will be swapped out once the new one is ready? I worry your trip to be honest Janine is cold even when it’s warm…

Hi guys, just catching up on your videos. After buying the VW camper, can you please clarify why the VW was handed back? You don't actually give a clear reason. Thanks.
We had to give it up for personal reasons unfortunately. But we have moved on 😊
As you are vegan and can't wear wool or down jackets, have you considered just taking a couple of sheep with you to snuggle up to?
Definitely considered it but logistics got in the way
Kevin Wald has the same camper van as you guys.
Would love to go there! It's on the list
Is teddy gear made of polyester? If that'd the case you are potentially breathing in micro plastics while you sleep?
I think you need a much more expensive coat Janine, Down and Gortex it will be worth it.
Down is not vegan, however.

You'll find a short series on his trip in a Sprinter van on Living the Van Life. last winter you took us to beautiful warm and colourful India, this year to the snow and ice. I am so excited for your next travels and looking forward to sharing the adventure; from the warmth of my cosy home
Looking good. You can adjust your gear as and when if need be when you start the journey. Looking forward to you getting over the water.
you may want to get ski pants for Janine, Marks and Spencer leggings wont cut it for someone who feels the cold like you do, quilted pants and fleece lined pants are the way to go. a heated jacket or vest is also a great option.. i have all of these and it only get to minus 5 or 6 here in the part of Canada where I live
Great tips 👌

Possibly your exposed diesel fuel lines for the engine and accomo heater ought to be insulated or have heaters inline
Depending on the grade of diesel used.

It's indoors so shouldn't be a problem. And it's a high isolation unit which we intend to keep warm all the time
