    Shortly after this video, I decided to keep the digital tachometer/ Hour Meter reader seen in this video installed on his mower. I secured the wire using zip ties to the spark plug cable and used double sided tape to place the LCD screen near the lever plastic housing. I can now use it to track how many hours this mower runs, and also keep the guess work out of how many RPM's I am running.

      Nice, that ~ $10 tach saved me $700 buying a new mower.
      My 22” Craftsman wasn’t cutting very well.
      Found I needed to increase RPMs to get the blade tip speed to 19,000 fpm
      21” blade needs to be at around 3450 RPMs on the motor although the twin blade might be different than a conventional mower.
      Gator blade also helped.

    I just bought this mower the hrx217hya and it is simply amazing. If you are considering this mower or on the fence, BUY IT! it is a bit expensive but it is worth it, it honestly is. I couldn't be happier. That being said, I am coming from a 2003 Toro super recycler with personal pace and it only has mulch as a cutting option. It bogs down so easily nowadays. However it still runs great and starts 1st pull. It has been very reliable and a great mower but I needed a new trimming mower for my lawn care business and went with the Honda and am so glad I did.

    I use a wide Velcro strip made for tying up an electrical extension cord and attach that to the main handle. Once the blade is engaged I use the Velcro to wrap around the main handle and blade bar. That way the blade remains engaged. All I have to contend with is the Hydrostatic drive bar. The Velcro is easy to unwrap to stop the blade and remains attached to the main handlebar when needed.

    A great video...I have the older model and has been running great last 7+ years without a hitch (of course, with frequent oil changes, winterizing, stabil / seafoam, etc.). Anothe trick I thought was helpful for me was to apply Fluid Film at the bottom to prevent cutting accumulating. Love the deck protection idea with tapes...mine is old now but will try that as well!

    Just bought this mower at Home Depot for 399.00!! Added additional 3yr warranty for $55. Two boxes were in middle aisle with yellow reduced price sticker. I took one of them. I think they made a mistake with their tagging. Can’t wait to unbox and use it this weekend.

      That's about the same price here in the US 1600AD is about 1000USD. That's how much this mower costs now. Back when I bought this it was $750USD, but they increased the prices big time. Too bad Honda stopped making these mowers in the US. Once Honda sells them all, we won't be able to buy Honda mowers anymore in the US. Hopefully our Aussie cousins can still buy them.

    Chris...with your advice, I just did all of your options to my new HRX217HYA. Handle bar tape, side rails, hour meter and governor adjust. I set mine to a max of about 3,350 RPM. My engine ran at 2900 RPM out of the box, so it needed a bit more of an adjustment. Like you I will probably only run at the higher level occasionally but it is nice to have that boost. I figure if I'm running synthetic oil and I change it frequently then having the extra 'turbo-boost' should be manageable. I'm going to do a temp test as well in the next week or so to see if there is a significant heat increase by running at the higher RPM.

      @@shanew7361 , I installed it at the front sitting on top of the red hood. It was fairly easy to do - I drilled a small hole for the spark plug wire to pass through. It makes for easy maintenance to see the stats up there. Unfortunately, I have to step in front of the machine to see the RPM. Generally I run the RPM at 3,000 unless I have an issue and really need the 'turbo boost'.

    Thanks for your tips, I just purchased a new Honda HRX217 but was wondering is it necessary to spray the underside of the deck with every use to remove any grass clippings, like with steel deck mowers? Great Job.

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The great thing about this mower is that the deck is made out of plastic meaning you do not have to clean the underside of a deck after each mow. However grass clippings do tend to accumulate around the discharge chute so I recommend getting rid that after each mow.

      I secured the tip the tachometer wire using black zip ties running from the spark plug all the way up to the handle. I then used 3m exterior double side tape to secure the lcd to the plastic lever housing. It's easy to read and looks factory installed. I fold my mower handle bar in after each use and power wash it occasionally and it's held up very well thus far.

    I just purchased this mower and cut m yard with it yesterday. Has anyone figured out how to keep the grass from flying all over you when it is in bag mode? I was covered in fine grass because it was blowing from the top of the bag catcher. My lawn mower looked like it was 20 years old afterwards. I wasnt expecting it to get so dirty. I have to take a hose to it. I would think for this price point, I wouldn't have grass all over me.

    Bought a new Honda HRX217HZA (electric start, 21") gas hydrostatic w/roto-stop. Followed the manual (probably my 12th mower). Electric start worked twice, then battery appeared to be discharged (just like the maual said it would). Tried the pull start: not going to happen> would not budge. Thought could be a hydrostatic lock or cracked ring or frozen/locked blade clutch or ???Pulled the spark plug. engine spun easily. Put the plug back in, locked still. Since the mower didn't come with a charger, had to order one and still waiting. Would like to get the mower running. Any thoughts on why it is locking up? I did a search and found that model online at a big box store and in the reviews with 1 or 2 stars only, there were MANY others with the same issue. Also, even though it only ran for about 5 minutes, there was more engine vibration than I would have expected and the throttle surged the entire time. Any ideas; or, should I just return it? Thanks in advance.
