Summer Jobs or Summer Daze - What Teachers Do For Summer Break

  • Summer Break is well upon us, so in this episode, we're diving headfirst into a pool of freedom, and resurfacing with hilarious tales from our sun-drenched (or not-so-sun-drenched) summer escapades. We kick off with what teachers REALLY do during the summer - yes, there's more to us than lesson plans and report cards. We share all teachers’ unanimous need for a break.
Tell talks about the apparent difficulty of juggling parenting and teaching. Shout out to teachers who are also parents! Meanwhile, Gabe and Lauran put their summer fitness goals under the microscope, or should we say, 'under the ice cream scoop'?
Ever wondered what we did during the summers before we became the cool teachers you know and love? We reminisce about our worst summer jobs. Get ready for tales of spicy chicken wings, cleaning other people's mess, a summer of... kidney stones (whoa, Tell!), and a fling with phlebotomy that didn’t end famously.
We wrap up the episode with a debate on summer PD and training in our segment, 'Good or Garbage'. So kick back, pop open a cold (name your favorite summer-time beverage), and get ready for a dose of fun, sun, and a fair share of 'we-can't-believe-that-happened'.
    Summer Break, you’re the BEST!

I used to teach preschool for Head Start so I always love hearing Tell talk about his Head Start experience. I make a little more now as a special education para and have the option to spread out my pay over the summer. Head Start never offered that here. I also work part-time at our local public library during the summer and some evenings and Saturdays during the school year. I get to see kids and help out with those programs but I also get to socialize with adults or I can just hide out and straighten bookshelves for hours.

My parents solution to me waking them up super early was to put a sleeping bag and mini fridge in their room by their TV. The mini fridge had milk and a small snack and I had a child remote that could turn on the TV at a set volume and would allow me to choose between Disney, nickelodeon, or PBS. I think they were geniuses cuz that would keep me entertained until a reasonable hour!

Love the podcast. I have been teaching for 19 years and have 3 kids (and two grandkids now, 😉) so I always feel the need to be available for them during the summer. However, I totally get it and respect my colleagues that choose to put in some more work. Everyone needs to do what works best for them and their families. Kudos to you all, great job with the podcast. Enjoy your summer everyone.

As an introverted mom of two (4yo & 20mo) having my kids at home all day everyday is too much for me. I am blessed enough that both of my kids are able to attend preschool/summer camp during the summer a few days a week. I try to be intentional on the days when they are home with playing with them as much as I can handle, doing outings to the splash pad, cooking with them, etc. My son (4yo) and I took a "field trip" to a museum not far from us last week in between his summer camp field trips.

As a child of a teacher, I help my mom with summer school programs that she works. I'm actually planning on becoming a teacher myself, only for middle school and high school though. I'm not planning on doing elementary as my mom does. I've grown up around the education system and I absolutely love it so I love helping out with the programs as well. It's a pretty entertaining summer, I even have some funny stories of my own from helping out lol. Have a great summer everyone!!

Instead of summer professional development, we have “summer institute” the week after school ends lasts two days, it’s optional, you get to choose 1-6 classes that interest you, and we get paid for each class we attend 😁 I chose one art and two psychology classes, only did one day and got paid $144. I love my school district ♥️

Found this after seeing a Facebook Reel. I'm in Canada (West Coast, outside Vancouver). Single parent of 2 teenagers now, plus a homestay student. Thank you for this. Curious as to the teacher who said he went back to grad school to study how to support teachers. I'd love to learn about the program of study. I am a teacher and now counting down until the first day of school which is the first Tuesday after Labour day here.

I actually love teaching summer school (k-2) because it’s only 4 weeks long, 4 half days a week. It pays really well too, so I can’t say no. Plus, my kid is going into kinder so I can put her into a pre-kinder class and save money on her not being in daycare anymore.

I did Summer School after my first year of teaching and it wasnt too bad. I teach 1st grade by yeah, I was kind of over teaching for the year, but I'm glad our Summer school is super lenient and we can do whatever. The extra money was nice. Getting that paycheck with the Summer school money, I was shocked at how much I got paid because teachers don't get paid enough, so the extra money felt like money I would be satisfied if that's how much teachers got paid.

@ 6:31 to all the teachers on this podcast please tell me you take the bigger paychecks for 9 months and dont spread it thin for 12...DO THE 9 MONTHS because. The reason they give you that option...its not because they are nice and flexible its because of u take 12 months that money stays in the schools/govt hands longer and they invest it, let interest accure on that mound of cash all year instead of 9 months...when you could be putting that in your bank account or high intersst savings/money market acct and YOU the teachers will be making the money off of it not the school board with your money....keep the intetest for yourself!!! I hope none of you are doing the 12 months...end of my little rant....anyways love ur podcast!!! Big fan ❤

My dear young friends working extra jobs so you can afford to be a teacher: Congress has a very nasty surprise waiting for you at retirement. If you receive any teacher retirement pension funds AND Social Security that you are now being deducted to pay, you will be penalized every payment in retirement. Yes, public school teachers who worked extra will have their Social Security docked. This is not told to you ever, but you’re considered government employees, who are not allowed to also have any other earned pensions. That’s not true for other employees in America who get to collect all that they earned over a lifetime of working. Both my husband and I worked extra to survive those early years. What a shock to discover on the day we signed up to retire how much are Social Security checks would be deducted EVERY month until Congress decides to rescind this horrible law- which doesn’t affect them, by the way. They use this against teachers to help balance out everyone else’s retirement! I’ve been on a campaign against this for two years. My recommendation now is for all public school teachers to go on a National strike until Congress restores equity for what we’ve legitimately earned. We put up with low pay and some pretty challenging conditions teaching generations of American children to be treated so unfairly by the WEP law. That law considers your state retirement a “windfall.” Help repeal it now before another school year or decade goes by and catches you, too!

You act like people don't understand seasonal jobs. Deadliest Catch and some other shows have shown most of the clueless. Sure, you get paid for 9 months, but you don't live 9 months. So if you need to work during the summer to keep your total income up, welcome to the reality the rest of us face.
